Dear Brockenhurst, Easter is coming up and hopefully some good weather! Do you have anything planned for the children? Maybe an Easter Egg Hunt or a family weekend away? Hayden, our son had his first over night cubs “Expedition” last week. A two hour hike in the dark, then a night in a tent with 3 friends. He arrived back exhausted after 3 hour hours sleep he told me. Funnily enough, where I thought he maybe cold out in the open he told me he was too hot, which is why he couldn’t sleep! I couldn’t believe it, that really surprised me. It turned out they were “camping” indoors!! Now, do you need something doing in the house, the garden, or do you want a good evening out? B r ockenh u r st The Friends of Brockenhurst (FoB) is primarily a membership Society concerned with major planning issues affecting the village of Brockenhurst and its surroundings. However usually twice a year it brings keynote speakers to the Village to provide the members, and any other villagers interested, information about a topic that is hopefully of interest to villagers. This has certainly proved to be the case in the past At its 2013 Spring Meeting, to be held on 17th May, at the Village Hall in Highwood Road, Brockenhurst starting at 7:30pm it will bring Sergeant Wilson of Lymington Police to speak about “ Crime on your doorstep”. This will be particularly relevant after the gunpoint robbery of a commuter at Brockenhurst Railway Station, and a number spate of burglaries; though at least in one case with early apprehension of the criminal concerned! Crimes on ‘our’ doorstep! No charge is levied to attend the meetings, though we hope non-members will choose to become members, or make a small donation to costs. Membership a recommended minimum of just £7.50 per household per year, with the proceeds being used in the production of two newsletters delivered free of charge to all households, the hire of the hall for the two meetings, necessary expenses
such as adequate insurance cover for the events, and more importantly to provide small cash donations to help local causes: e.g. the prizes at the February 12th Village Pancake Race organised by the Village Events Committee, on which the FoB are represented. The FoB is run by a volunteer committee, and would welcome new Committee members. No experience or training or long term membership is needed, just contact us! We also welcome suggestions for topics to be addressed by appropriate speakers at its two 2014 meetings. Riverside Hotel Supports RNLI by Fish & Chips Suppers
The Master Builders Hotel, situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River, has raised over £2000 for the RNLI by simply donating £1 from every Fish & Chip meal eaten in the Riverside Restaurant or Yachtsman Bar. The Hotel gardens run down to the river and marina so , as well as all the attractions of the surrounding New Forest, a whole range of watersport activities and sailing facilities are available to guests. The Hotel felt that it was therefore particularly important that it helped raise money for the RNLI who as a charity, depend on donations to help meet the cost of saving lives at sea. The RNLI is funded solely by these charitable donations. Their volunteer lifeboat crew members give their time for free, but they need training, well-maintained equipment, lifeboats and shore facilities. Support from the public means the crews can save lives quickly, safely and effectively, something the Master Builders Hotel and its guests are proud to be of assistance. The Hotel is aware that there are over 230 lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland, and the lifeguards patrol over 180 beaches each summer. Each year it costs over £140M to run this lifesaving service. For every £1 donated, 85p goes to the rescue service, and 15p is reinvested to generate more funds – not a penny is wasted.
Last year lifeboats were launched 8,321 times around the coast of the UK and Ireland, rescuing 7,912 people - an average of 22 people a day. Lifeguards responded to 14,519 incidents and helped 16,414 people on beaches in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We’ll never know how many more tragedies they prevented through warnings and advice. The Master Builders Hotel intends to continue this fundraising activity and looks forward to handing over many more thousands of pounds for this worthy cause in future. Paul Boissier, Chief Executive of the RNLI, said: ‘I was absolutely bowled over by the generosity of the Master Builders Hotel and its customers in supporting the RNLI’s vital work of saving lives at sea. Thank you all so much. This donation is extremely valuable to us; it will allow us to buy essential clothing and safety equipment for two members of an inshore lifeboat crew.’
