Hello Brockenhurst! We have a full magazine for you this month with several interesting articles for you to read. One for the mother of the bride from Fab Frocks. There is an article about wild life in the garden on page 22. Dorothy wants to find her way home on April 5th and 6th at the Bournemouth Pavilion. There are even prize tickets to be won — see page 25. We also of course have our local trades people who are ready to help you. The full index at the back gives you a whole range of services contained in magazine. Do mention The Brockenhurst Guide when making any calls or bookings. This makes all the difference. We have plumbers, electricians, dentists, opticians, fitted furniture and even a chimney sweep! If there is a category you would like that is not in the book, please let me know and I will find someone for you. If you have a local club community activity that you would like to get new members for, or just let the local people know what you do and when, then please send me an email or give me a call. I can promote these services for free for you! If you have a local business and would like to be included then please let me know also. Our rates are excellent and we give free help with artwork when needed and a free editorial with three months bookings. We are here to help the local people find the right business to help them. Everyone wins! Wishing you a great month of March. Warmest regards,

Well Known Reporter Honoured The New Forest Agricultural Show Society has honoured a well known local reporter by inviting him to become a Vice President of the Society. Keith Bloodworth, from The New Milton Advertiser and Lymington Times (A&T), has been associated with the Show since he was a cub reporter in 1960, where his job was to be the ‘gofer’, result running for George Eynon of the Western Gazette and Leslie Lowe of the Southern Evening Echo. He is known for his reporting integrity and hence probably gets to know far more about what is going on in the Forest than anyone else! He has been reporting on Forest Affairs since joining the A&T in 1960 and went on to be the official New Forest Reporter for Southern Newspapers, working from home to begin with until they built an office in New Milton. Keith spent 20 years here before returning to A&T where his roots always lay. Incidentally he found his old Underwood typewriter still gathering dust under his old bench desk where he had left it 20 years before! In his early show days, when it was a one-day event, Keith would attend meetings of the executive to keep abreast of what was going on, there being no Press Officer in those days, and remembers giving Robin Ford a hand making the Show's distinctive “Must Go Forest Show” placards at his home at Burley for display around the Forest. Keith has never missed a show, and believe it or not, having gone into semi-retirement, last year's event

TBG March 2012 page 6

was the first he actually saw. For once he was able to forget about the Press tent and spent three most enjoyable days on the show ground with his wife Judy. Keith commented “It was with immense pleasure and honour that I formally accepted the Board's invitation to become a Vice-President. In my 52-year association with the Show I have always considered myself a friend and have endeavoured to report the Society's affairs with integrity. I have made many friends at New Park over the years and hold the Society's interests dear to my heart.”

The New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be held on Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th July at New Park, Brockenhurst. Discounted tickets are available now on the Show’s ticket hotline on 01590 622409 or online at www.newforestshow.co.uk until July 11th.

Put the Fab Factor into your Wedding Outfit What can be more special than your daughter or son’s wedding day? Such an important occasion demands a special outfit and Dorset has a really special boutique that can help. Fab Frocks of Westbourne has over 10 years experience in helping women find the right outfit for the big day. This award-winning boutique offers a choice of hundreds of stunning mother of the bride and groom outfits, all under one roof. The shop is like a treasure trove with special occasion collections from all over the world along with hats and fascinators to match. Owner Tracie Beardsley says: “We know how important it is for women to find a wedding outfit that looks amazing. We also know that modern women don’t want to look mumsie so we’ve sourced a stunning range of dresses and jackets that are stylish and contemporary.” She adds: “The other big factor is of course cost and we aim to cater for all wedding budgets. We have beautiful dresses and jackets which start at £165 for the outfit. Our fascinators start from £35. This is comparable to high street prices but you won’t see our collections on the high street and the last thing a mother of the bride or groom wants is to see another wedding guest in the same outfit as her!” Fab Frocks also believes in dressing real women. The shop stocks sizes 8 to 24 and offers a special order service on some collections up to a size 30. “We have really listened to what women want and have dresses which include features such as integral bra support or the option of bra-friendly straps,” explains Tracie Beardsley. “Some designs have cap sleeves, others have tummy-flattering ruching and most dresses are on or over the knee.” The spring/summer collection is now in at Fab Frocks and has something for everyone, wherever the wedding may be. Tracie Beardsley says: “Because weddings no longer take place just in a church, we have introduced some less formal outfits for mums. We have beautiful, floaty dresses in silks and cottons so they are cool

TBG March 2012 page 12

This gorgeous candy pink stripe outfit from Spanish designer Presen is available at Fab Frocks

to wear. These can be teamed up with a bolero and make a perfect outfit for a summer wedding on a beach or in a marquee. Even better, dresses like these can certainly be worn again!” Fab Frocks offers a personal, friendly service. The shop is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturdays 10 to 5.30pm. Throughout March, April and May, the shop is also open every Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Tracie Beardsley adds: “It’s not essential to make an appointment to visit our boutique but we do recommend it. This allows us to ensure one of our friendly team can be on hand to help you. It also means we can find out in advance what you’re looking for and gather some ideas. By having an informal chat on the telephone, we can create a customer profile of your wishes and needs which really helps when it comes to finding the right outfit for you.” Fab Frocks of Westbourne, 17 Seamoor Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth BH4 9AA. Five Generations Of Using Their Loaf The Jose family have been master bakers since the 1890s and here in the New Forest area since 1905. At The Bakehouse, we hand make our white bread with sour doughs which have been matured for 30 hours, providing a wonderful flavour and long lasting freshness with no additives. To complete the process, the breads are then baked in authentic stone ovens for their traditional taste. And if the thought of these hand made breads and pastries are making your mouth water, then why not drop in to The Bakehouse today for a made to order mid-morning or lunchtime treat? Fresh breads and baguettes baked on the premises can be filled with all manner of wonderful fillings ranging from simple salads to fresh hog roast and apple sauce or prawn and avocado to create the sandwich of your dreams!

Wild Gardening — Some Hints and Tips Dorset has some of the country's best nature reserves and is the base for national conservation organisations such as the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust and the Butterfly Conservation Trust. Dorset's botanical records boast more species than any other county. However, nature reserves are under ever increasing pressure from people and habitat loss is threatening many of our native species. Our gardens represent a huge potential habitat and if a few small changes are made then wildlife could benefit greatly. Dig a Pond – This will bring instant wildlife to your garden. Pond skaters and birds will find it within hours of you filling it with water. Frogs, newts and dragonflies will probably follow within a year. Grow Wildflowers – Many common garden plants are heavily cultivated and non native. This means that, while they can look pretty, they are poor for wildlife. Try growing some native wildflowers and reduce the amount of non native species

Silver Studded Blue Butterfly

TBG March 2012 page 22

Rose Chafer Beetle such as rhododendron. You could also set aside an area of your lawn and let it grow wild. Compost – As well as reducing landfill, a compost site can be a habitat in its own right. Invertebrates will thrive as the green waste is broken down and this will bring in larger predators like birds and toads. The heat generated by the decomposition will attract slug eating slow worms and harmless grass snakes. Bird boxes – Loss of trees and hedgerows has meant that suitable sites for nesting birds are in short supply. The size of the entrance hole will dictate what species of bird will live there. You can also put up bat boxes or bug hotels. Log Pile – Our obsession for tidiness has means that dead wood has become a rare habitat. Next time you get the chance, make a small, neat pile of logs in a hidden corner of your garden. You will soon get all sorts of wildlife and some interesting fungus. Contact Simon's Garden Services on 01202 425035 for more information or visit www.simonjarvis.co.uk.
