Our Meadows Before the Second World War, meadows dripping with wildflowers and humming with insects would have been a familiar sight across the UK. However in Hampshire our flower-rich grasslands have declined by a staggering 98% in the last century, much to our concern at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. Unfortunately agricultural use – including ploughing, drainage and fertilisers – have hit meadows hard. Growing towns and cities have also been instrumental in the loss of these habitats. As a result most have disappeared from our countryside, and the wildlife they support is in trouble too. Meadows are home to a huge range of grasses and flowers, which provide nectar and other food for beautiful bees, butterflies and hundreds of other insects. In turn, these attract rare greater horseshoe bats and many endangered farmland birds - including skylark, whose numbers have more than halved over the last 25 years. Meadows are also a key part of our natural heritage. They have inspired people for centuries and are essential to our rural economy and wellbeing. They also help protect our rivers from pollution, hold together healthy soils that store carbon, and enable landscapes to retain water and reduce flooding. We have been working with landowners across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to advise them on how to manage the grassland meadows on their patch – whether to protect the wider habitat, or to support a particular species. By protecting and restoring the meadows we have left across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, we can create a network of wildlife havens covering the counties. Meadows are at their finest in June and July. Wildflowers are blooming, butterflies are on the wing, grasshoppers are singing and birds are
raising their young. So why not celebrate by enjoying meadows in their full glory? Hampshire’s speciality is ‘water meadows’ which were traditionally irrigated with river water to maintain good grass for sheep and cattle. They are now among Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s richest places for wildlife. Good examples are Winnall Moors and along the Itchen Navigation between Winchester and Eastleigh. They can contain dozens of plant species in a square metre. Meanwhile our Hoe Road Memorial Meadow in Bishops Waltham is the Coronation Meadow for Hampshire, meaning it’s a flagship nature haven for the county. Seeds from donor plants there are used to restore other grasslands across Hampshire. Hoe Road was donated to the Wildlife Trust by supporter Nancy Mason 20 years ago. Today the meadow can be sponsored in someone’s memory, making it a tribute that will bloom year after year. Though the decline of our meadows is shocking, we have an opportunity to recognise the pockets of meadow that we still have left, and take vital action to protect and restore them for future generations. East Boldre WWI event deemed a success!
T h e re w a s t r a ff i c g r i d l o c k throughout the village, it was almost impossible to move around the photographic exhibition and an estimated two thousand people witnessed the remarkable aerial dogfight staged by The Great War Display Team. Such was the success of the final day of the World War I commemorative events in the tiny village of East Boldre. “Attendances throughout the weekend far exceeded our expectations,” said Mike Husband, Chairman of the Village Hall organising committee. “Over seven days people flooded to the various events linked to the arrival of the Royal Flying Corps in East Boldre in 1915. We are deeply indebted to the Heritage Lottery Fund and our other sponsors, to all those who assisted with the planning, the army of volunteers who helped during the week and those who attended in such great numbers.”

The cast of “From Forest Field to Western Front” The centenary celebrations had the perfect start, a dramatisation “From Forest Field to Western Front” playing to full houses over three nights and receiving considerable acclaim. The East Boldre Village Hall was also full to capacity when the Hon. Ralph Montagu officially opened the four-day Spring Bank Holiday programme of events and New Forest East MP, Dr Julian Lewis, received a very generous reception for his talk on ‘The Politics of the First World War’. On Saturday the opening of the exhibition of unique and previously unseen photographs of life at the Royal Flying Corps Training Station in East Boldre during World War I drew surprisingly large crowds and Steve Antczak’s tours of the historic airfield site received ever growing support, around 150 people joining his final two mile guided walk on Bank Holiday Monday.

Fawley Standard Bearer dips in tribute Sunday’s Service of Remembrance, conducted by retired RAF Chaplain, Canon Ray Hubble, was held in a packed St Paul’s Church in the village and, following the laying of Poppy crosses on the graves of 19 RFC pilots who died in training in East Boldre, a Royal British Legion Standard Bearer led a solemn parade to the Village Hall where a wreath was laid at the memorial to the dead of two World Wars. Following a performance by an RAF brass quintet, Flight Lt. Peter Towill of 84 Squadron RAF, the only remaining squadron formed in East
Great War Display Team Boldre during World War I, played a leading part in the dedication and unveiling of the Badge of 84 Squadron RAF which now hangs in the village hall. The aerial appearance of the Great War Display Team drew the largest crowds of the weekend and as replica Sopwith Triplanes, British SE5a’s and Junkers and Fokker aircraft wheeled and dived above East Boldre’s Bagshot Moor it became clear that the entire celebration of the Royal Flying Corps Training Station that stood in the village during the First World War had been a total success! CONSUMER CHAMPION Credit Cards By James Walker, www.resolver.co.uk One piece of consumer credit that you are overwhelmingly likely to have in your life is a credit card. But are you managing it properly, and are you getting the best from any credit cards you have?
Tempting introductory teaser interest rates Interest rates on some cards can seem low at first – but check the small print and you could find that the interest rate goes up dramatically after a certain period.
I’ve put together a few thoughts on how best to approach using a credit card – as well as a little bit about what to do when things go wrong.
Credit card protection If you use your credit card to buy goods or services worth more than £100 and up to £30,000, you’re covered by ‘section 75’ of the Consumer Credit Act. This could be anything from a weekend break in a hotel to a new car.
Do you need a credit card? The short answer to this is ‘probably’. There are plenty of occasions when you’ll find a credit card extremely useful. If you’re staying at a hotel or renting a car, for instance, they often ‘block out’ part of your credit card as a virtual deposit in case of damage or non-payment. Other useful aspects of a credit card include extra protection from fraud or refund policies, and sometimes freebie extras such as cashback rewards. What are the downsides? You need to be disciplined. If you don’t meet repayments interest can start to quickly add up, especially on higher-rate cards. Ideally, you need to make sure you pay off the entire balance every month. Credit checks You’ll undergo a credit assessment when you apply for a card. What’s more, any late-payment charges will affect your credit rating, which will make it harder for you to get credit in other ways – including a mortgage. Never use a credit card to take out cash. You’ll almost always be charged a fee to withdraw cash via an ATM using your credit card – as much as £5 a time – as well as interest on the money you withdraw.
What it means is that if there’s an issue with the items you’ve purchased, the credit card company has equal responsibility with the seller. This is particularly useful if the company you’ve bought something from goes bust, as you might be able to claim a refund form your credit card provider. If you’ve a problem with goods or services, it’s best to try and resolve this with the retailer in the first instance – and you can do this by raising a case free via resolver.co.uk Reclaiming unfair credit card charges You might be able to claim charges that you consider to be unfair, even if they’re because of missed or late payments – especially if you’re dealing with lots of debt. According to the Governments’ Money Advice Service: “The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has now taken over from the OFT as regulator for the consumer credit industry. However, if you are in financial hardship and have incurred charges – or were previously in debt and incurred regular charges at the higher rates – you may still be able to reclaim some or even all of them.”

Carefully slice the aubergine and courgettes and layer them into a baking dish. Pour the tomatoes into a jug and add the basil and garlic clove (you can pop this in whole). Use a hand blender and whizz up until smooth. INGREDIENTS
1 medium/large aubergine 2 courgettes Cupful cheddar cheese Handful of fresh basil 1 clove of garlic Tin of chopped tomatoes Enough pasta for those around the table!
Pour the sauce over the veggies and add the grated cheese to the top. Bake until golden in the oven (fan 190°c/ 215°c) and serve on a little bed of pasta.

The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premium-badge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal. At launch, I tested the Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Duratorq TDCI. With 148bhp and 258 lb.ft of max torque, the Ford is able to dig deep at low revs, resulting in proper pulling power. Certainly, it’s easy to be blinded by the kudos of a premium badge but the Mondeo is brilliant whether in estate, five door hatch or four door hybrid semblances. It’s handsome, interior space is excellent,
the ride is smooth and the handling is spot on. The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors. The car is crammed with entertainment tech and safety gadgetry too. In fact it’s the most advanced Ford ever introduced in Europe, and has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. The Mondeo is the first car from the Blue Oval brand worldwide to offer Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race. This problem is not unique to the Pacific. There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.

The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside. The weather has been so much better recently and we have had some beautiful evenings, so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We did exactly that last week. Hayden had gone to scouts, leaving Stephen and I some time on our own for a couple of hours. We all live such busy lives and I just needed a walk to clear away the hustle and bustle of the day. Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magnificent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight.

A contented Nellie at Holt Heath
It was a gorgeous evening as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along the ‘path’. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and flourish. While we were there we saw cattle, ‘wild’ horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists. There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden up…or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. It is also possible, as Stephen and I can attest, to take an even shorter route if you are not feeling quite so energetic. I really must be getting old! To be honest on a good day, picnic and a

bottle of water in hand, this would be a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the peace and quiet while observing nature at its best. Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car! I couldn’t believe it. I waited a while thinking whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there. I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!), and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it. The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this,

breathed a sigh of relief. My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking. It must be all the fishing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the float landing in the water. Those were the days! Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory. If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be … or maybe it is, if a car parks in front of you! Where will Nellie go next…?

PLOT Gardening Tips
Start them young! Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious! Jobs for July:Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). Remember tomatoes.

As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.
While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds natural pest control! packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

Rhinefield Probus Club NEW FOREST
All Parkinson’s sufferers and their carers are welcome to join us for gentle, chair-based exercises specifically tailored to their needs and abilities.
