Wildlife News
Wonderful Winter Fun at Testwood Lakes Whilst it has got a bit colder outside, Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will be giving families a warm welcome all through the winter. There is still plenty of fun to be had for children of all ages at Testwood Lakes nature reserve in Totton. For children aged 2-5 years there are weekly Forest School sessions on Monday mornings. Families can book ahead for a 6 week term (£39) and children can cook on a campfire, use tools to make things from wood and play in nature. Every second Tuesday and every last Friday of the month families are invited to drop in for a Wildlife Tots session themed around a story with some exploring outside and some crafting inside. And for dads there is a Dads and Tots drop in session every last Saturday of the month. These sessions are all 10.30am-12noon. For even younger ones (0-2 years) there is a weekly Natural Babies session every Tuesday morning. There are buggy walks, crafts for adults, sensory play and songs for babies. For older ones every last Saturday of the month there are activities for 5-11 years (Wildlife Watch, 2-4pm) and 12-18 years
(Wildlife Rangers 1-4pm). Young people can learn more about wildlife and take part in activities to help wildlife such as making a bird box or taking part in a conservation task with tools. There are opportunities to see wildlife through bird watching and pond dipping activities. Booking essential for Wildlife Rangers, adult accompaniment essential for Wildlife Watch. It’s a suggested donation of £4 per session. Parking is available at the Education Centre on the hill overlooking Testwood Lake. Please follow the green signs. Community News
East Boldre set to music by local writer I have co-written an album of songs about East Boldre, my village. My cowriter is Jim Kean and we have been friends for 25 years or so.
Five of the songs are true stories, which I have permission from the families of the persons involved to highlight on the album.
I met Jim when he was lead singer with country band “FEVER”. He had also been in rock bands before going into London’s West End as a musical actor, playing the roles of Che Guevara in Evita, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and Peter in Jesus Christ Superstar.
The true stories in song are: “The Lady with the Pram”, “Dick, the horse that died from farts”, “The day we drank John Cutler’s Cider”, “Oh crash bash bang wallop” and “Mesopotamia”.
We enjoy working together and this has carried on with this project about the village, some of its characters and some of the events that happened down through the years.
The other five are songs about and of the village. It’s a mixture of Country, Folk Rock, Music hall parody and fun. The album will be available in CD format. Anyone interested can contact me on 01590 612808. Barry Lowe

Brockenhurst FC News Christmas has come and gone but there is still a long way to go in the season for all our teams. Our first team have had to contend with a number of injury problems but remain mid table in the Sydenhams premier league which is a credit to our young team. The younger teams continue to give us lots of reason to be optimistic for the future with both the under 15’s and under 16’s sitting on top of their respective leagues at the time of writing, while our under 7’s and under 9’s were both winners of a tournament they entered in November. I’m sure you will agree with us that an environment that allows boys to develop their football skills while learning the value of teamwork and participating in exercise is worth all the effort that our team of volunteers put in. We hope that the village community can feel proud of our football club which is at the heart of the village and we repeat our invitation to you to come along and watch a match, enjoy the hospitality of our clubhouse and watch live sport on our big screen in a friendly, relaxed environment. It goes without saying that our lads would really appreciate your support. Perhaps we can tempt you with a special New Year membership of just £10 for the remainder of the season. Naturally good...
ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew lettuces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
