What to do on a Winter Walk? Christmas indulgence in turkey, roast potatoes, and pudding can put off a good start to your New Year’s resolution. Grab your coat, gloves and woolly hat, pull on your wellies or walking boots and immerse yourselves in the Wildlife Trusts’ brrr-illiant guide to spending time outdoors with nature this festive season.
• Walk off that Christmas dinner by grabbing some fresh air on Boxing Day and going on festive wildlife hunt. Who will be the first to hear woodpeckers drumming on trees, starlings gathering, or the unmistakeable red berries of a holly tree? • Visit one of our magnificent winter wonderlands like the Lower Test Nature Reserve/Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve where there is so much to see. Watch the overwintering wildfowl make themselves at home on the Solent in their thousands, after having made the long trip from as far as Siberia. • Play Poohsticks – play with friends or family on a bridge over a river – collect a stick for each person of similar size, weight, but look different so you can recognise it. Drop sticks on the upstream side of the bridge, turn around to the other side and see whose stick arrives first. Endless fun for everyone! • Look out for wintry animal tracks and signs – pine cones that have been stripped by hungry squirrels, animal fur caught on fences and footprints in mud, sand or snow. • You don’t have to go far to see some wintry wildlife – take some time out to watch the robins and other garden birds to melt a bit of the stress away from getting the house ready for your guests or cooking Christmas dinner. Plant of the month Primrose
The first sight of a primrose can never fail to warm the cockles of one’s heart, especially if the winter months have been somewhat dreary. Growing these pretty plants is relatively easy and can be grown from seed, sown outdoors in a cold frame during winter. Once they’ve got their second or third leaves they can be put out into the garden, either at the front of a bed or in a container. They don’t grow overly tall and need planting in lightly shaded areas about 6-12 inches apart. Keep an eye on slugs and snails as these can often affect the plants otherwise enjoy the white, yellow, red and pink colours that will bloom.

Introducing children to the wonders of walking at Minstead Study Centre When the children come to stay at Minstead Study Centre they experience the joys of walking in the wild, sensing their surroundings ďŹ rst hand, rather than seeing a diluted view of the world through the ďŹ lter of a car window. The beneďŹ ts of walking are many and clear to see. Grasping a chance to immerse in the natural world; seeing, smelling, hearing, touching and even tasting your environment. Starting to learn about the planet through the ďŹ ve senses using active learning as a doorway to lifelong memory. On foot you have access to really wild, off road places, numinous places which stir the spirit. Tiptoeing onto an ancient bogland where feet rarely tread, to learn a special respect for a unique, fragile habitat. Jumping onto frozen puddles to experience the elements in all types of weather. In these times of electronic entertainment, children need to be encouraged to unplug themselves from their devices and step outside for a moment. They can breathe the fresh clean air and surround themselves in silence. A brisk walk has many associated health beneďŹ ts. It deepens the breath, tones the muscles and builds core strength. It elevates the heart rate and burns up calories. As part of our forest ramble the children count how many steps they take in a minute, and then calculate how many steps have been taken over several hours of walking. Usually this equates to an epic 15,000 step, calorie burning adventure! On our journey we rise 40m higher than our starting point,

%DQN $FFRXQWV Fancy some free cash? Well, those generous bowler hatted ladies and gents at your bank are giving it away. Quite literally, they will to pay you up to £150 to switch bank account - and, as it can also improve the service and features, grab it. The bank account switching market is red hot, with many banks willing to pay for your custom. Here are some need-to-knows: Q. You’re talking about switching, but I’ve heard all types of horror stories? Martin’s A: Much of that is a legacy opinion from a few years ago. We’ve just celebrated the second birthday of what’s called ‘sevenday switching’, and that’s made the process easier. I did a poll of 100s of people on my Facebook page who’d tried it and 82% said they found it ‘easy and hassle-free’, while only 4% experienced problems. In practice, when you apply for a new bank account, assuming you’re accepted, three things happen within seven working days: 1. All standing orders and direct debits are moved for you. 2. Your old account is closed. 3. All payments to your old account are auto-forwarded for three years. Yet still far too few people try it – last year only 2% changed bank accounts – strange as my mailbag is full of people complaining about their banks. So my message is stop bitching and start switching. Q. OK, so it’s easy, but what’s this about free money? Martin’s A: Many of the challenger banks (those who want to break the dominance of the old ones) want you to switch to them so much they’re willing to pay you to do it. There’s a full rundown and eligibility criteria at mse.me/bankaccounts. But, in brief, here are the current top picks: • FirstDirect.co.uk gives switchers a free £100 (or more via some websites) – cash comes within 28 days of switching and paying in £1,000. Other benefits: It’s won every customer service poll I’ve ever run, 92% rate it great, it has a linked 6% regular saver, 0% overdraft up to £250. • Halifax.co.uk/Reward gives a free £100 within three working days of switching. Other benefits: Pays £5 each month as long as you’re in credit. • The marksandspencer.com current account gives a free £100 M&S gift card (or more via some websites), within a month of switching. Other benefits: Unlike other accounts, you don’t have to pay in a set monthly amount (see next question) linked 6% regular saver, 0% overdraft up to £100.
Q. Can anyone get these? Martin’s A: You’ll be credit scored to get these. Though most people who have an existing bank account should be fine (unless it’s a basic account). Yet to get the bonuses, you normally need to use their switching service and have a couple of direct debits or standing orders set up. Plus with First Direct, you must meet a minimum pay-in requirement, equivalent of £13,200 a year – effectively a way of requiring you to earn a set amount. If you have irregular income, M&S is the only one not to demand this. Q. Aren’t there also accounts that pay high interest on your savings? Martin’s A: Yes that’s another form of competition, and if you have higher savings, that is likely to be more lucrative in the long run than grabbing the switchers bonuses. The big one is the Santander.co.uk 123 account – it pays up to 3% cashback on certain household bills and up to 3% AER interest if you have between £3,000 - £20,000 in it. Its £24 a year fee is rising to £60 in January, yet if you’ve got over £5,000 savings and earn some cashback, it’s still likely you’re winner (full analysis of if it’s worth it in my www.mse.me/santanderfee blog) If you’ve less, the lloydsbank.com Club Lloyds pays 4% AER interest if you’ve £4,000 to £5,000 in it and both TSB.co.uk and Nationwide. co.uk pay 5%, but only on up to £2,000 with TSB and £2,500 with Nationwide for the first year. Q. Once I’ve switched and got the free bonus, can I switch again to another bank account? Martin’s A: Yes, there’s nothing stopping you continually switching. But remember, you’ll be credit scored every time you open a bank account, so try to minimise opening too many accounts in a short space of time, especially if you’re going to be applying for credit in the near future, like a mortgage. Q. I hate banks - are there any other options? Nationwide, as mentioned above, is a building society, so it’s owned by its members, and it’s got decent offers. Or see if your local credit union (a local savings and loans co-op) is one of 500 that offer bank accounts via ABCUL at findyourcreditunion.co.uk Q. I’m often in the red – can I switch to a 0% overdraft? An overdraft’s a debt like any other, so if you often go into it, cutting its cost makes it easier to clear. FirstDirect.com has a £250 0% overdraft, and you can put the £125 it pays switchers towards clearing the overdraft too – a big boon. Nationwide.co.uk/flexdirect may give a bigger 0% overdraft, credit score depending, but only for a year. It’s 50p/day after, so aim to clear it before then.

Ingredients Cake: 100g Nut flour 150g Hazelnuts, soaked overnight, rinsed and dehydrated 75g Coconut sugar 1 tsp Ground cinnamon 30g Water Pinch Salt

Dark, Decadent and Delicious!
Fros�ng: 150g Cashews – soaked and rinsed 225g Water or nut milk 100g powdered coconut sugar 1 tsp Vanilla extract or powder 75g Chocolate powder 70g Cacao butter – melted
For the cake:
Pulse the hazelnuts until they reach a crumb consistency. Add the remaining dry ingredients and pulse to combine. Add water through the feed hole while the machine is running. Once incorporated, about 5 seconds, turn the machine off and test the dough by squeezing a small handful into a ball. If it holds but is still slightly dry, this is perfect as this will result in a lighter dough. Line a cupcake tin of your choice with cupcake papers or cling film and fill with dough. Be gentle and don’t compress the dough too much, this will help result in a lighter cake.
For the frosting:
Blend first 5 ingredients in vita mix on high speed. Once smooth, add the melted cacao butter in the top feed hole while the blender is running on medium speed. Turn to high speed for 5 seconds. Transfer the frosting to a storage container or bowl and place in fridge to set, about 3 hours. Once set, use a piping bag or a cranked spatula to apply the frosting. Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped hazelnuts on top, if you wish.

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
