Dear Brockenhurst, Beaulieu, Setley, East Boldre, Hill Top and surrounding villages, We will look back on these confusing times wondering how we ever got through! It is vital right now to keep ourselves, our families and friends, safe and well, whilst trying to keep the economy afloat. What a job! More than ever the local trades and services here inside your community magazine need you. If we are sensible, protect ourselves, use face masks and wash our hands regularly, isolate if we are unwell, then we will be able to keep going. The companies here are all following the protocols required to continue to provide their services and keep their businesses alive. Stephen, myself and the team here all hope you are fit and well, and are continuing to find some things to smile about. Future planning is good for you. It permits us a goal, takes us beyond the immediate stops and worries, and gives us something to look forward to. What are your plans? What would you like to do in just a year’s time? On a more immediate basis, can the advertisers here inside help you with that dream kitchen, bathroom, landscape garden or even help you plan to move house? We do hope we are able to help you with this future, and immediate planning. The index at the back of the magazine shows you all our loyal advertisers. If there is someone or something you are looking for and they are not here, please give one of us a call. I am sure we can help you! We wish you a good month of November. I think this month we can really appreciate all that was done so many years ago to keep our freedom. We salute those who lost their lives to save us!

Now You See Me: Marine Masters of Disguise In the world of wildlife, the word ‘camouflage’ can mean a lot of things. It sometimes refers to mimicry, which means being seen but incorrectly identified - think grasshoppers pretending to be dead leaves. The attributes we associate most with camouflage, however, are things which make animals hard to see at all; this is known as crypsis.

A clear advantage Invisibility may sound like the stuff of fantasy, but it’s surprisingly common in our seas. True transparency is tricky to achieve - any food eaten will be visible, and eyes must be opaque in order to function. But partial transparency can still be useful, especially in shallower waters where light is plentiful. Even the stealthiest animals are visible from above by the shadow they cast on the seabed, and from below by their silhouette. Since more light can pass through their bodies, transparent species have a diffuse outline from both angles, which makes it harder for predators and prey to identify them. Local examples of this superpower include the common shrimp, the moon jellyfish, and the aptly named transparent goby. Eels also have a glass-like developmental stage which is thought to help them survive the long trip from their birthplaces at sea to the rivers where they mature into adults.
Colourful characters If transparency isn’t an option then clever use of colour could be the answer. Sardines, herrings, and sea bass are all darker along their spines, which is called countershading. In natural lighting the tops of objects are illuminated while their undersides fall into shadow. These fish are darker on top and lighter underneath, creating an optical illusion that helps them blend into their environment. Seahorses, and flatfish like plaice, go one step
further: they use pigment-filled skin cells called chromatophores to match the colour and pattern of their surroundings. Cuttlefish are masters of this trick thanks to additional control over cells called papillae, which they can raise to alter the texture of their skin too.
Dress to impress Some of our marine species get crafty and enhance their natural camouflage with items from their environment. Dahlia anemones have sticky warts on their bodies which pick up pieces of shell, sand, and gravel. When their tentacles are retracted the anemones can be almost entirely obscured by these pieces of debris. Several species of spider crab are called ‘decorators’ due to their love of accessorising. The great spider crab, for instance, has a shell with a rough and knobbly surface; this acts like velcro, allowing the crab to disguise itself with pieces of seaweed and sponge. Over time, these decorations can become a home for tiny animals like hydroids, making each crab a walking habitat. Abi Webber

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing
company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Brockenhurst area and
manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

It seems like almost no time at all has passed since Hampshire’s countryside was last scattered with the carpet of colours from the autumnal leaves. Although this might well prove to be one of the strangest autumns in history, Hampshire has had plenty of interesting chapters of its own in its tapestry of heritage. From an interesting piece of farming equipment to a vital role in the war effort, here are some more fascinating facts from around the county.
www.richardchubb.com
It is not a secret that Hampshire played an important role in World War II, interestingly however, Lepe Beach near Southampton, was especially vital to the war effort as it was used to build essential concrete caissons to form part of the portable Mulberry harbours which was a clever feat of engineering developed for use after in
connection with the D-Day landings. The construction of these concrete ‘chocolate blocks’, as they have been called, was to be of the utmost secrecy and so it was chosen that Lepe was the perfect location. After their completion, they were transported by the sea to form the Mulberry harbours. Did you know that Jane Austen and John Constable were among the many visitors to Netley Abbey? Although it could be said that the now ruined abbey has had an existence that is as quiet as the landscape around it, it has been lauded as one of the best preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in the southern counties and has this attracted much interest from visitors throughout the generations
Photo: Daryus Chandraa
Were you aware the pretty Hampshire town of Emsworth, on the nearby border with Sussex, has been home to so many national and international celebrities? From actors such as Nicholas Lyndhurst and Albert Finney to P.G Wodehouse and Sir Peter James Blake who broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the world in 1994, Emsworth has always been a small town with an important role in the county. In fact, so important was the town in Queen Victoria’s reign that she herself visited in 1842 and loaned her name to some of Emsworth’s road names! Photo: Richard Woollett
Did you know that it was in Hampshire that a well known piece of farming equipment was first developed? Today farming is often PHOTO: ROMAN GRAC associated with large tractors however in times gone by, it was the figures of ploughs and heavy horses that dotted the landscape. Amazingly it was in the village of Abbot's Anne that the iron plough was first developed in the early 19th century by two brothers whose invention caused widespread demand and changed the course of farming.
Did you know? It has been said that Four Marks is reported to
be the only settlement to be called such? Four Marks is located in the east of the county and its original settlers were soldiers who had survived the Crimean War and had been given homes and more specifically land although the village had origins dating back to at least the 16th century.

“Dealing with death is one of the hardest parts of life” This year in particular we at Dorset and Wight have been inundated with enquiries concerning the worry of potential liability for long term care fees, along with an increase in requests for guidance on Lasting Power of Attorney’s.
Surprisingly, over 70% of the adult population still do not have a Will and of the 30% that do, the majority are either out of date due to familial or legislation changes or are basic Wills that do not protect your assets in a way that you actually intended. For instance, protecting your property against care fees and other third party predators by the use of a Property Protection Trust Will provides many benefits for your family’s estate. As long as it is done in advance, and well before you are aware of a need for long term care, it forms part of any sensible estate plan. When considering a Lasting Power of Attorney many people think “I’m not ill, why do I need one?” But they are missing the point. These again are documents that have to be made well in advance of any problems and are equally as important as a Will to have in place. Your Will looks after your wishes when you are no longer with us. Your Lasting Power of Attorney looks after your
wishes while you are still with us, but struggling to deal with your own affairs. This can happen due to age, the onset of a degenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia, or suddenly due to an accident. Now more than ever people need professional help to put their affairs in order and to ensure that they themselves and their loved ones are protected if the worst was to happen.
This month’s tip No matter what age you are there are many things in our lives nowadays that require you to be able to show photo identification. So even if you have stopped driving and travelling it is worth considering renewing your passport when it expires so that you always have some form of photo ID available. This can save you time and expense in the long run. Dorset and Wight are your local trusted provider of affordable Lasting Power of Attorneys and professionally drafted Wills. You have undoubtedly heard of us Now is the time: to call us. Telephone 01202 065953 or 01983 623900 or visit:

22 WRITTEN BY KATE EARL
STAR GAZING Welcome to the November Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of events are viewable just by stepping outside on a cloudless night and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point e.g. a clear view to the west. Occasionally, viewings will benefit from the use of binoculars or a small telescope if available, but all can be enjoyed without either. International Space Station All sightings for early November occur between the chilly hours of 4a.m. and 6a.m. After November 20th the ISS is visible every evening after 5p.m., often twice in one night. Some of the brightest passes are around 5.40p.m. on the 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th November, all rising from the west or southwest. Please note timings are subject to change, therefore I recommend checking www.heavens-above.com for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to Southampton. Those of you hoping to use the predicted times for ISS overhead passes in September may have noticed they weren’t accurate. This was because the astronauts on board had to perform a last-minute ‘avoidance manoeuvre’ to ensure that they were not hit by a large piece of space debris left over from a 2018 Japanese rocket. The procedure was carried out effectively and no damage was sustained to the space station or the crew. See all eight planets of the Solar System in one day! November provides a rare opportunity to see all eight planets within 24 hours, with suggested viewing timings of 6a.m., 6p.m. and 9p.m. Binoculars or a small telescope will be required to spot Uranus and Neptune. To prevent moonlight from washing out the fainter planets, viewing on a cloudless night between 8 – 20th November is recommended. Mercury and Venus Mercury and Venus are currently visible in the early morning and the best time to spot them is around 6a.m. early in the month, and 6.15a.m. later in the month. Mercury will be quite close to the Sun and hard to spot as dawn breaks, and it will also be quite low on the horizon, therefore a clear view east, or an elevated position (such as a first-floor balcony or open window) is essential. A skychart or app may be helpful to prevent confusing it with the nearby star, Spica. Venus won’t be confused with anything as it’s the brightest thing in the sky after the Sun, Moon and ISS! Be mindful to finish observing before sunrise (around 7a.m.) and always avoid looking directly at the Sun. Earth Just look down! Mars Mars is rapidly moving away from us now, but is still a distinguishable redorange object in the constellation of Pisces, a part of the sky with few bright stars, so it’s hard to miss. Look high in the sky towards the south at 9p.m. Jupiter & Saturn Still hanging on in our darkening autumnal skies, the gas giants are best viewed in the southwest around 6.p.m. before they sink below the horizon. Saturn is the dimmer object on the upper left of the bright, yellowish Jupiter. As an added bonus, Pluto, the ex-ninth planet is currently located very close to Jupiter as seen from our line-of-sight on Earth. It is difficult to spot, looking like a faint background star even with a good telescope. However, if you are looking in the direction of Jupiter, you are also looking in the direction of Pluto, so you can sort of tick it off the list! Uranus and Neptune Both the ice giants look like blue-green-grey discs in a pair of binoculars. They are best viewed when looking for Mars around 9p.m. Uranus is situated within Aries and is positioned left of Mars, whilst Neptune is in Aquarius to the right of Mars. As they are very hard to locate it is recommended that keen observers look up positioning charts that are freely available on the internet. Moon November’s Full Moon falls on the 30th, and has a number of names. In North America it is known as the Beaver or Frost Moon; to the ancient Celts it was the Dark Moon; and to Medieval peoples it was called the Snow Moon. VENUS

The Adventures of Daichi
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Daichi, the Dashing Dude, is our playful campervan who loves to take us out and dash us away to new and familiar places to have some family fun. Last month he did not disappoint. Many of us had holidays abroad cancelled, so what a great excuse to make the most of our wonderful English South Coast. Daichi was delighted to dash us to Devon for a week, away from it all. I love driving along the coast to Devon, taking in some amazing views along the top around Bridport and then having a stop and something to eat on the beach at Charmouth. Fossil finding at its best. I really know I am on holiday when we stop and look out to sea here. I can relax, unwind and start to leave the stresses behind. Bovisand Beach was where we were heading. We had never been before but as the holiday in Tenerife was cancelled by the flight company just a month prior, I had looked on Airbnb to find this gorgeous view of the sea from the small cottage at the top of the cliff. That was the one. It is all about the view for me. On arriving at Bovisand Beach, which is a stone’s throw away from Plymouth, I was not at all disappointed. It was incredible. You could see for miles. A Navy ship was anchored off the shore, there were swimmers, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders, sailing boats, motorboats and small ferries taking passengers to the idyllic looking villages of Cawsand and Kingsand opposite, across the bay. Truly delightful. In fact, when you sat down in the cottage
Daichi looks out to sea...
Watching the boats go by... and the tide was in it felt like we were on a boat in the middle of the sea - that is all we could see! We were lucky with the weather too. The previous week had been wet and windy, but this week looked much better, and it was! As a youngster, brought up in the North, rock pooling was a major delight. Dad and I used to pick winkles by the bucket load, literally, boil them and have them for tea. “Yum”, I say… “Ugh”, I can hear you say! It is a personal taste. This area had great rock pools and some caves too - when the tide was out. The first day on the beach was great. Hayden was able to get his race board out and practise his run into the sea at great speed (teenage boys…) while I lounged on the beach drinking coffee… one of my favourite occupations! Stephen put on his wetsuit and was off splashing about too. The sea rolled slowly, or not so slowly, back into the small bay and started to fill those rock pools with swishing (I love that sound) seawater and seaweed. There was rather a lot of seaweed due to the previous week’s storms, but that did not put us off. What we did not anticipate was the speed with which the sea crept in… we nearly had to swim our way back to the steps! All good fun. Us Brits do like to be dramatic at times! Back at the cottage we soaked in the sun on the decking overlooking the incredible bay below us. Where we had been sitting was now full of water. Thought

27 provoking… but I am a bit like that. An hour later, back to the other beach, where there was still some sand to sit on. Hayden could go charging back into the sea again. Watching the sunset, the rippling waves and the glittering sea with another coffee in hand was a great way to end our first day. Another day on the ‘other beach’ was decided and this time I did spend time in the rock pools which had small shoals of speedy fish and dancing seaweed. I could not find a crab! Not one. I was quite perturbed about that, so it gave me something to worry about! I think we must like problems, as we always seem to create them for ourselves. How funny. Three wonderful days on the beach. We were fully ‘unwound’. Now Hayden is a teenager, going into the sixth form, so uniform is no longer a requirement. Primark. He wanted to go to Primark. Wednesday was due to have some rain, so we planned our trip to Drake Circus, the shopping Centre in Plymouth, which of course has a Primark. Daichi, who had been keeping guard all week, was happy to take us shopping. However, I would not recommend a van in Plymouth. It is very difficult to park! The headroom in the multi storeys is not quite enough… and there is little parking for more than an hour anywhere else. Another problem – really!? Have to laugh. Finally, we managed to find a space for a maximum three hours. Primark was fun! I could not believe it. Literally
Rockpooling, whatever the weather!
Boys with their toys! within half an hour all three of us had found what we were looking for… and more… and all at a great price. Since you cannot try anything on at this odd time we are living in, you either like it or you don’t, you buy it, or you don’t. Simple. The times I have spent trying clothes on, for hours, to come away with one item if I am lucky. This time, no choice, take it or leave it. There may be some advantages to some of the restrictions which have at the moment! Not only that, I am now trendy Mum! Leggings, ‘Converse’ looking shoes (I used to call them sandshoes, but that is not cool these days…) and a gorgeous cardigan that looks hand knitted and reminds me of one my Grandma made me a long time ago! Hayden got his red shoes to match his shirt and more skinny jeans too. Stephen even bought shoes and a pair of trousers. Success – we were all smiles! The National Marine Aquarium was another really enjoyable day. What fish, wow! We also went on the Merry-Go-Round, Mary Poppins style, by the sea wall. It just had to be done. A meal out, just passed the Plymouth Lido, which had reopened for the summer, in a restaurant with almost 360 degree views of the sea. What more could we want? The whole week was a hit. Simple fun on our British Isle. Daichi loves to take us away, recharge those batteries and then back to reality, still smiling. It took us over ten hours to travel home as we kept stopping enroute to take in all the different places. Lyme Regis is another family favourite, so we ended our holiday there on the beach, with another meal watching the sun setting before finally driving home. Where will Daichi take us next, I wonder? Gardening Tips

On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

A fresh walk from
C hilbolton
This month’s walk returns to some of the most beautiful parts of the River Test and it’s surrounds, as we once again head up to the North of the Region.
Start here
With the suggested start from The Abbots Mitre, Village Street, Chilbolton, SO20 6BA
the regular walker would expect to complete this ‘long 5 miles’ in under 2 hours. The route is well marked and generally easy walking, but there are two climbs along the way that will push the heart rate up. Leaving the car park, we turn right along the main road for about 300 metres as far as the church on the left (St Mary The Less)
This was built in the 12th century as a predominantly wooden structure, being replaced over time by the current masonry building. We walk on past the church and cemetery before taking a left hand turn over a stile, across a field, through another stile and turn right tracing the line of the River Test as far as a large wooden bridge. Here we turn right over the bridge and across the open meadows for 400 metres, then up to, and once again, across another wooden footbridge that spans another section of the Test. At this bridge it is not unusual to view trout swimming in the shallows so it is worth a lingering view. Once across this fresh bridge we arrive on Fullerton Road, where we must turn left and walk for a good 300 metres, passing the right turn and arrow for the Test Way. The next turn right is our destination...
that takes us uphill underneath a disused railway line bridge and on upwards following the outline of the field and the footpath arrows. (The fields either side are private so do follow the main path). Clearing the brow of the hill the path emerges above a large valley with views Northwards, then aims downhill, over a stile and at a steep angle towards a new stile that borders a fast moving road where we must halt. Taking the very greatest of care we need to cross the road and select the footpath opposite. This borders the left side of a wide field for almost 600 metres, with hedges and trees on the left. We enter a small wooded copse and turn left, taking the arrowed choice.

33 and once again traversing a disused railway line. We have an 800 metre walk along the line, with an opportunity to find the platforms that formed Fullerton Junction (hidden in the undergrowth) when Queen Victoria was purported to travel along the line to the Isle of Wight. The line approaches a new railway arch with a sign announcing the Test Way...
then across a narrow wooden bridge that spans the River Anton, a tributary of the Test. From here we turn right and follow the footpath signs that take us over a concrete bridge and up to a metal farm gate. Going through the gate we now turn left and begin a stroll along the once busy Sprat and Winkle railway line and before long we commence the second of the significant climbs. The views from the top of this climb shows Chilbolton Observatory some 3 miles away and the fields around it. These views disappear as we drop down hill once again to a local road, where we turn left again and continue the downhill trek for a further 600 metres, crossing the River Test and then taking the left hand path that borders the river. This path goes under a brick bridge and approaches a tarmac road where we turn the sharpest of right turns, around the location map...
and an important sharp left turn to take us up to the Coley Road almost opposite West Down Car Park. From here we should walk along the road for about 500 metres until we meet a sign and path on the left, signposted to the Test Way, where we swing down and follow the tree line and water meadows for around 800 metres. This includes crossing a playing field and rounding a big house along the gravel road as far as Cow Common, a small local car park.
Finish here Since we are back now in Central Chilbolton the return home is best taken over to the right to follow Joys Lane up to Village Street at the top and turn left for the final 300 metres to reclaim the car at The Abbots Mitre. Naturally enough the reward at the end of this walk can be refreshment at the establishment that hosted the car parking.
