Happy Halloween! Do Stephen and I look pretty scary?

This was us at a party last year. It certainly was a good excuse to let our hair down.

Well our gorgeous weather has continued, with a little rain and cooler temperature beginning to show.

Did you manage to make the most of our English countryside and seaside over the summer? Nellie took us to the sea front in Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago. You can read about our monthly ‘Adventures of Nellie’ on pages 22 and 23. We also have other community news… Ann Montini meets the Stars and this month she meets Englebert Humperdinck! The Dorset Wildlife Trust is batty about bats. There is a Landscape Photography Exhibition at Moors Valley. The National Trust gives us some Purbeck news, Suttles wins a rowing competition and Philip Mills is moving!

Unfortunately Chairman Mike Stollery has had a sad decision to make regarding the Purbeck Society. You can read all about that on page 12.

Isle of Purbeck-based Company, Suttles, Wins Rowing Competition Isle of Purbeck and Poole-based stone, aggregates and sheet piling group Suttles, has retained its title for the second year running in this year’s rowing competition, as part of the Swanage Regatta and carnival week.

The team was invited to take part in the competition by Swanage Sea Rowing Club, alongside 5 other male teams, and rowed around 1000m from Ocean Bay to The Mowlem.

The team was made up of six male Suttles employees from its quarry and sheet piling divisions, as well as one of Suttles’ crane lorry drivers. The team’s female cox came from Swanage Sea Rowing Club.

Suttles’ rowing team captain and Swanage Sea Rowing Club member, Matt Suttle, added ‘We were all delighted and very proud to win the trophy again this year, it was a goal we had set ourselves when finishing last year’s racing. Great support from both family and other Suttles colleagues could be heard in the boat from the shore when we crossed the finishing line. With quite limited training time and an increased effort by other competitors namely the ‘Carpenters’ team it was brilliant to come out on top. Belinda, our cox, was extremely influential in our training and race performance, with both great encouragement and navigational prowess during the final race. We all look forward to competing again next year!’

Ann – Brilliant new album how did it all come about?

Ann – Eurovision... We all had such high hopes with you?

Engelbert – “Simply Sir Elton John... once he was on board that was it, many others wanted to join in, which was great and you know I owe him a lot... What a guy and super star “

Engelbert – “I loved doing the show, but you know I lost out to Russian singing grannies, that actually baked bread while on stage... I mean what chance have you against that, and more so, what is it to do with the song or winning...

Madness really.“

Ann – It’s a brilliant list of people though...

Engelbert – “It is, and so many I enjoyed Smokey Robinson, Neil Sedaka and Gene Simmons... all were so helpful, and together I am very blessed with this album.

It’s the album that I think will define me in years to come...

Well hopefully.”

Ann – It’s been well received and already a huge chart hit – thoughts?

Engelbert – “You know Ann every album is always a worry, but to get this kind of reaction at this stage of my career is simply super, I had no idea, and we have been so stunned in that respect, but it’s also so nice... I am so grateful to my fans, it’s for them and they have taken this to their hearts... what more can you ask really.“

Ann – What is next for you?

Engelbert – “I am touring again and doing dates all over the world, I love to travel, and never tire of it, but then after that starting work on the next album, which is going to be called ”Engelbert Redialled“ as we have more duets that we could not fit on the first album, I am touring so look out for dates, and then we start recording again.”

Ann – Finally a message for your fans here in the UK...

Engelbert – “Quite simply without you I am nothing, and I am so grateful for the love and respect that we have had together over the last 48 years... I wish them all much love.”

Ann – You tell me that you owe your career break though, to another singer who?

Engelbert – “It’s true. Remember the late great Dickie Valentine... well he had to pull out of the TV show “Sunday Night at the London Palladium “ and they gave me the slot.

He thanked me for helping him out, and that really was the start of it all. You could say in fact it’s because of him I am here today... He was such a kind guy too and super talented.“ Ann – You also admired and were a great friend to another singing legend...

Swanage Oracle

PALS Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), based in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, offers advice, handles complaints and helps solve a range of issues.

Their office has been redesigned recently so patients and visitors can drop in and sit with a member of the team, rather than talking to them at a counter.

PALS Co-ordinator, Jennie Moffat, says: “We wanted to make it more open and welcoming but also to be able to provide an environment where people who want to talk more privately, can.”

The team have also recently worked with The Patients Association to learn more about complaints and are working closely with the wards to encourage staff to deal with any issues on the spot.

Jennie says: “We’re a friendly and approachable team and I feel we do make a difference to the patients.

“We also get patients who come in and say ‘are you here so we can say thank you as well?’, and that’s really encouraging.”

Mike Horey, Porter “One of the best parts of the job is getting to know patients and their backgrounds.

Often you build good relationships with those who are in the hospital for a significant length of time, and you become their first port of call for advice, reassurance and stress release. Some just want a friendly pair of ears.u Steve Grant-Foale loves his job as a volunteer, greeting and helping patients and visitors.

“Several years ago I had serious brain surgery which saved my life, so I wanted to give something back to say thank you. Many of our patients and visitors are coming into an unfamiliar environment and feel nervous about this. They may also be feeling very unwell so it’s important to me to help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. I can also share my own experience of being a patient to reassure them.”

Talking about Wildlife...

Batty about Bats During their existence on earth through several millennia, bats with their silent flight and mythical reputation have left few cultures indifferent. They feature in folklore across the globe, both revered and feared, but rarely understood as the remarkable mammals that they are.

Bats are the only true flying mammals on the planet and locate their prey using a sophisticated system known as echolocation.

They are elusive nocturnal creatures, and, despite their close proximity to human habitats, difficult to spot, partly because the sounds that they make are too high pitched for the human ear. Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind but have relatively good eyesight. There are over 1000 species of bats world wide, and 17 species of breeding bats in Britain. Of these, the pipistrelles, the brown long-eared bat and the noctule are the most common. All British bats are strict insect eaters, capable of devouring up to 3000 insects a night, from midges and moths to mosquitoes.

Bats roost in various habitats, from hollow trees and caves to houses and churches.

They often use different locations at different times of year, depending on their roosting needs. Bats are important to the food chain but have decreased in numbers due to loss of habitat and excessive use of insecticides, which has diminished their food sources. Bats are protected in the UK, and it is illegal to disturb or injure them or their roosting sites in any way. Bats rarely cause any damage to houses, but as winter approaches, they get ready to hibernate, and you may find a bat that has chosen

your loft for its winter retreat. If you find an injured bat or need help with bats, ring the Bat Conservation helpline on 0845 1300 228.

The Purbeck Society TO BE DISSOLVED

The Committee of the Purbeck Society has taken the decision to dissolve the Society after appeals over the last year for people to come forward to help run the Society have come to nought.

The Society, which was formed as a ‘Learned Society’ in the 1850s, has more recently been actively supporting the retention of the Swanage and Wareham Hospitals, the Swanage Day Centre, the establishment of the Swanage School as well as campaigning against the proposed Navitus Bay Windfarm. It has also played an active part in the planning process, including the 3VJHS 7SHU LUKLH]V\YPUN [V PUÅ\LUJL development in Purbeck for the better.

At its peak, the Society had a membership of around 400 members, who enjoyed a popular programme of Winter talks on all manner of subjects and a well supported programme of Summer visits to places of heritage and historic interest.

Unfortunately, and like a number of other local organisations, the Society

There will be no programme of talks this winter and no outings or visits next year and with four of the remaining Committee retiring at the end of the year and no-one to replace them, it would be impossible to continue. Therefore, the Committee has no alternative other than to make the necessary arrangements to close the Society.

Chairman Mike Stollery said, “It is a sad decision not lightly taken but, in the circumstances, inevitable.

Jurassic Jaunt: Askerswell Walk Description: A 7.25 Km/5 mile walk, great countryside tracks and coastal views, including along to Lyme Regis and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of the UK and views way into the Dorset countryside.

Ascent: 195m. Estimated time: 2 ½ hours.

Start point: Askerswell village by the Church. Grid Reference: SY 530 925. Post Code: DT2 9EJ. Directions: Leaving Bridport in an easterly direction, do not take the first left sign to Askerwell but go up the hill on the dual carriageway and take the next left after 1 Km/.75 Mile. Follow the road for 500m to meet the Junction with the triangular piece of grass and the Church is straight on after 100m.

Toilets: No toilets in village. Toilets in Bridport or at transport stop at the Eype turning off the Bridport Bypass.

Walk down from the Church to the 3-way junction and turn left through the gate. Bear slightly left, straight up the hill for 100m to the stile in the fence. Continue along the fence for 150m to the next stile in the corner.

Straight ahead for 60m to the gate, then straight ahead again for another 60m and up the steep bank to meet the main road. Over the stile and carefully cross the fast main road to the gate directly opposite.

Go through the gate and onto the double gate (30m).

Bear slightly left to pas to the right of the barn but left of the bushes ad proceed straight ahead for 300m. Here, look right to see the magnificent view along the coast to Lyme Regis and the flat top of Golden Cap. At the end of the bushes, drop down to the gate in the bottom right corner. Straight ahead through the gate for 250m to the next gate, straight ahead through that one and across the open field for 250m to meet the road. If you look sharp left here, you will see the path leading up to the Roman Fort you have just passed.

Go straight across the first lane and 20m across the grass corner to the next lane. Turn left and walk 400m down the lane to Chilcombe Farm.

Just after the farm, turn right along the track for 50m then fork left 50m down to the gate. Turn right and head to the gate in the middle of the right hedge (130m). Go through the gate and straight ahead to the right corner (450m). Go through the gate and bear slightly left for 180m to the stile 30m left of the gate in the corner.

Go over the stile and the next stile after 30m then turn right and follow the hedge around and down for 250 m to the gate in the bottom right corner, ignoring the stile after 80m.

Go through t the gate onto the track for 100m to meet the entrance to the house then straight on for another 80m to find a stile in the fence on your left just before the next track on your right.

Go over this stile and straight ahead for 100m down to the gate in the dip and straight ahead again to the gate in the left corner (120m). Straight ahead again for 130m to a stile in the far hedge, just left of the taller tree.

Over the double stile and bear slightly right to the lefthand gate of the 2. Through the gate, keeping the hedge to your right for 100m then straight on for another 80m to gate in the left corner.

Straight ahead through the gate, over the small stream and follow the path around the edge of the woods to the left to meet the gate/road after 200m.

Turn right up the road for 500m past Higher Sturthill Farm to meet the sharp right-hand bend. Go straight ahead here over the stile for 40m to the gate. Then bear slightly right for 80m down to the gate in the hedge.

Bear left here to the gap in the left hedge, keeping the telegraph poles to your right (130m). Bear right for 170m to the gate and wooden bridge. Over the bridge, bear right but staying left of the house down to meet the road.

This is a fast, busy road so cross carefully straight across to the stile. Straight ahead for 300m to the stile in the middle of the fence then straight on again for 140m down to the stile in the left hand corner. Straight ahead for 100m to the gate and road.

Turn left here for 40m and take the stile in the right hedge to the left of the barn. Straight ahead for 250m towards the cottages ahead and to the gate to meet the road.

Turn right for 150m and at the junction, go straight ahead, through the gate. After 200m bear right of the barn. 40m after the barn, go left for 50m then turn right through the gate and head for 200m to the stile in the right corner.

Walk for 150m towards the right corner of the cottage to the stile in the corner. Over the stile and turn right for 20m to meet the road.

Directly opposite the cottage, go over the stile and bear left for 170m up to the top left corner to meet the gate/ road. Turn right along the road for 500m into Askerswell then right for 250m up the triangular piece of grass at the junction, turning left back to the Church.

Adventures of Nellie

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Well Nellie, the Purbeck Publications Campervan was very excited about this one. She was going to take Grandma on a ‘mystery’ 70th Birthday treat. Grandma had no idea where she was going, let alone what she would be doing. Grandma and Grandad live all the way up North in Hull and often come to visit, but living so close to Bournemouth with our beautiful beaches we don’t always make the most of it. So, my sister and I did some plotting a scheming and decided a trip to the seaside would be just what Mum and Dad would love. It was kept as a very guarded secret and even Hayden, our ten year old son, would not give the game away, when asked many questions by a playful Grandma and Grandad.

The day came and we set off in Nellie. Lady J, my sister’s and brother-in-law’s rather nice Jaguar followed closely behind. The weather was good, the sun was shining and Grandma and Grandad were sitting, a little perplexed, clutching a rather large suitcase which was ready for anything I think! Nellie was in her element. We drove along the sea front and arrived at our destination - The Cumberland Hotel,

Dad’s mouth was open, but for once and believe me this is rare, he was not able to speak. Mum stood in amazement. We were a little early and so were treated to a complimentary drink at the pool side while our sea view rooms were prepared. Nellie was kept on guard in the car park.

The views from our rooms were spectacular.

We each had a balcony and on the glorious day that it was, it was fantastic to relax and sit looking at the clear blue shimmering sea.

What a wonderful place we live in! Now… having a ten year old boy doesn’t mean you can do this for long! No Mummy, action is needed. It’s time to play, get moving, no time to chill out. So, we all went back to the poolside and had a swim in the heated outdoor pool. It was really rather good.

Grandma and Grandad relaxed some more, sunbathing on the loungers watching us.

Dinner was booked for 8pm. The menu was excellent, the service was perfect and a great evening was had by all. A dinner well deserving of a 70th Birthday.

23 Being so near to where we live meant that Hayden could be taken to school, so the following day he went to an early breakfast which he thoroughly enjoyed and then Nellie took him off to get his education.

We had booked a massage for Mum in the adjacent hotel which is part of the three Oceana Hotels on the sea front. The advantage of these hotels is that if you stay in one you can use the facilities of the other two as well. Each hotel has something different to offer. Again it was a beautiful day – not bad for the 22nd September! Dad likes his sunbathing, so again the loungers next to this pool were a welcome site as you can see here. Getting up was not so easy though!

After Grandma’s very special Birthday massage we all took a walk along the sea front down to the beach. There is an impressive Tribute to Jon Egging from the Red Arrows, who tragically lost his life after a Bournemouth Airshow display. This is based on an idea by two pupils from Kinson Primary School and was designed by the artist Tim Ward. I had not seen it before. Then we followed the path to Harry Ramsden’s! What an international fame this

“Out for the count” and “Give us a hand!” has become. Mum remembered 55 years ago going into a ‘shack’ up North to get fish and chips from Harry’s place. That brought fond memories back for her. We just had to go in to taste the delights. Grandma loved the setting and she very nearly ran off with one of their plates! The waiter didn’t quite have to do a rugby tackle at the door, but it was a close shave…

Apparently they get asked often if the plates can be taken or purchased. A very clever idea! It all adds to the authenticity of the surroundings. The meal was delicious and ended a really happy 24 hours ‘away’. We are so very lucky to live in such a glorious location. Mum’s Birthday was a resounding success. Dad sent us a thank you card on their return to Yorkshire which said, “We were completely taken aback. Mum was overwhelmed by it and will remember her 70th for quite some time!”

We didn’t quite manage to get her on the new zip wire…maybe we will save that for next time? Where will Nellie go next…?

Swanage Painting Club

Swanage Painting Club is a small friendly group of leisure painters who meet on Thursday mornings from 9am to 1pm at the Catholic Hall, Rempstone Road unless otherwise noted. The group coincide with the usual holiday periods i.e Christmas, Easter and Summer Holidays. We hold an Exhibition of our work towards the end of July, beginning of August where paintings are displayed for pleasure and sale also with the hope of attracting new members. We have all levels of expertise and some of the more advanced members are always willing to give advice if needed.

Membership is ÂŁ25 per year so why not come along to one of our sessions to chat and see for yourself if you would like to join us.

National Trust in Purbeck More than 50 carp have been removed from Little Sea, Studland in an attempt to reverse a decline in water quality brought about by their unauthorised release into the lake.

Carp grazing the lake bed have stirred up sediment and released chemicals into the water, said Studland Area Ranger Paul Bradley.

Water quality has been reduced so much it is preventing aquatic plants from getting enough light to survive and there is a real concern the lake may reach a point of no return.

It is thought carp were deliberately released into Little Sea some years ago. Since then they have bred rapidly and the largest are believed to have reached 30-40lbs in weight.

Gill netting by teams of National Trust staff, volunteers and contractors over three days in September caught a total of 57 carp, the largest of which weighed 21lbs.

The fish were placed alive into aerated tanks and will be used to restock commercial fisheries.

The latest success follows an experiment with static carp traps that proved ineffective – though the semi-submerged cages were popular with otters, cormorants and gulls, which all used them as places to rest.

Further netting was due to be carried out later this month (Sept) and the redundant cages will be removed at the same time.

The project is funded by Natural England and a further £12,000 has now been secured to continue netting next year.

Little Sea is part of the Studland Heath national nature reserve and is recognised as a good example of an acidic lowland lake, providing a haven for birds and other wildlife.

The Swanage School visited Langton West Wood near Langton Matravers as part of their Art and Wilderness Challenge Week.

Having walked up from Swanage, they were met in the woods by ranger Jon Leyland, who gave an introductory talk about the importance of the woodland and how the National Trust is aiming to manage the woods with local community involvement.

The children then split into two groups, one to experience the ‘wilderness’ of the woods through exploration and orienteering, and the other group to concentrate on art.

This group made charcoal by roasting willow twigs in sealed tins on a small fire.

After collecting interesting items from around the woods, such as different coloured leaves, feathers, snail shells and moss, the group then assembled a hanging wall of art.

The group then drew pictures of the surrounding trees using the home-made charcoal.

“The children seemed to really enjoy being in the woods, and it was a great opportunity to share our passion for the outdoors with the next generation,” said Jon. Corfe Castle tea rooms is well on its way to breaking its own record after more than 20,000 scones were wolfed down between March and August. Total sales of 20,617 for March 3 to August 27 compare to 23,000 for the whole of the previous year.

“We have had very positive feedback from customers for our innovative cream teas such as the savoury and the ice cream tea and we will continue to develop this ,” said Catering Manager Jean Gardner.
