Hello Swanage! Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We went down to the South Beach at Studland and had a great day out with some friends. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Stephen rowed me nearly out to Old Harry Rocks...well almost! It is very shallow over that way and ideal for the children so if you have not been, I highly recommend it. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The Swanage Oracle we have local information from the Swanage Chamber about the results of their floral display competition, Dorset Wildlife Trust educate us on Fungi and there are the usual listings of Purbeck events and what’s on at the Mowlem. There is also live entertainment at Wool and a special family ticket for those who love Crazy Golf! A great idea for the children or grandchildren—a game everyone can play. This is all inside. If you have a local club you would like us to know about or have an interesting story to tell, then please let me know. I would love to hear from you. Have you lived in Swanage a long time and want to share your memories—then do give me a call. We can share them with the rest of the community. Of course there are our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up — I deliberately don’t listen to the news — so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, the gutters need cleaning or do you need transport to the airport to get away from it all? All the help you will find inside. The lucky winner of the meal last month was Mrs Jill Collins. Well done! Here’s to a good month of October.

Swanage & District Chamber of Trade and Commerce Floral Display Competition Results Once again, the Swanage & District Chamber of Trade and Commerce encouraged its members to deck their premises in floral displays by holding its annual competition. Entries came in from across the region, with the likes of the Pitch & Putt at Kirkwood Park, the MKL Partnership, Knoll House Hotel, Grand Hotel, Tawnys Wine Bar, Swanage Railway and Sante Fe Park to name but a few. After some long deliberations on the part of the judges, the winner was announced to be Nixon’s Home Hardware on Station Road. President of the Chamber, Brian Barker, presented the shield and certificate to Derek Hancock of Nixon’s under their fine array of hanging baskets, which can be seen in all their glory on the right.

It’s Fungi Time! Fungi are not classified as either plants or animals, but form a kingdom of their own comprising a broad range of organisms, such as brackets, stinkhorns and puffballs, in addition to the more familiar mushrooms and toadstools. Apart from being a delicious and nutritious addition to our diets, fungi are of great ecological importance, supporting many plants and wildlife. They come in a hugely diverse group of shapes, forms and colours, and many have illustrative names; take for instance the parasol, horn of plenty, amethyst deceiver or destroying angel; extremely poisonous as the name implies! What we normally call ‘the fungus’, or mushrooms, are actually the fruiting body of the microscopic organisms, the finely threaded mycelia, that live in the soil. Fungi have been around for millions of years and exist ever ywhere on the planet. In the UK, thousands of different species have been recorded, many of them edible. Autumn is a good time to enjoy a fungus foray in the woods to reap the benefits of this wonderful natural resource. Some of the most common ones such as the chanterelles, wax caps and boletes are delicious, as is the wellknown penny bun, found in coniferous and deciduous woods, but as many fungi are notoriously difficult to identify and can cause ill

It is a good goal to learn to identify a few new species every year and there are regular courses and forays each year to help you, or you might pr efer to sim ply enj oy the ir colour ful contribution to autumn, maybe even capturing it on camera or with paint.
