Kaden runs in memory of Hero dad An 8 year-old local boy has raised almost £1,700 for charity after completing the Junior 1.5K at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival in memory of his Dad. Kaden Dugmore from Poole decided to run for Forest Holme Hospice because they had provided end-of-life care for his Dad, Karl, who passed away aged just 39 in August this year. Kaden sacrificed his playtime to train by competing in Sunday Park Runs or in the evenings with his Uncle Bodge, come rain or shine. He said, “I ran the Junior 1.5K in memory of my Daddy who was my Hero and lots of his friends called him ‘Legend’. Daddy loved to run whenever he could squeeze in the time from taking care of me. I know I will make him very proud. This is my first challenge and I hope there will be more.” Paul Tucker, Fundraising Manager at Forest Holme, said, “Kaden is a very special little boy and we are all so Kaden, with his late Dad, Karl

touched by what he has done and absolutely overwhelmed with the amount he has raised. His Dad was clearly loved by many.” Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and Isle of Purbeck, and Kaden’s mum Kimmie is very grateful for the care he received there. She said, “We would like to thank all of the staff at Forest Holme Hospice for the love, care and respect that you gave to Karl and our family while we were there. The dedication and support that you provide to your patients - there are no words to explain. We were truly touched and so appreciative of everything you did for us.”

Talking about Wildlife...
The Deceptive Cuttlefish The closest most people come to a cuttlefish is when their white ‘bones’ wash up on beaches after rough weather. These are the evolutionary remains of the animal’s shell, as cuttlefish are molluscs, relatives of the snails in your garden. Way back in the evolutionary past, their protective shell was internalised and then evolved into the cuttlefish bone, which is used to provide the animal with buoyancy in the sea. By regulating how much gas the bone contains they can move up or down in the water without having to expend energy on swimming. If you pick one up it feels light. Cuttlefish bones are not the only thing that makes this animal extraordinary. They are recognised as intelligent animals, indeed, research has shown that they can be more intelligent than cats and dogs. Capable of counting at an equivalent level as a 4 year old child, they can also solve puzzles, negotiate mazes and plan ahead. to get what they want – something that only a handful of species, including ourselves, are known to do. Cuttlefish communicate using the colours and patterns on their skin, which they can change instantaneously. This is especially used in courtship, when males compete for a female. Male cuttlefish have been filmed displaying female patterning on one side of their body (where a competing male can see it) whilst at the same time displaying to the female on their other side that he is an interested male. By deceiving the male cuttlefish into believing it is a female and therefore no threat, it avoids a physical battle, whilst at the same time giving the female his ‘come hither’ signals. While divers regularly encounter and interact with cuttlefish in our coastal waters, most people do not have the opportunity to meet these most interesting of animals. However at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset Wildlife Trust had a baby cuttlefish in its aquarium. It is one that washed ashore as an egg and subsequently hatched in the aquarium where it grew rapidly ready for release last month. Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too. ‘Together for Alzheimer’s 2019’ 5k Fun Run in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society On Sunday 29th September “Together for Alzheimer’s” 5k Family Fun Run/ walk took place in Wareham Forest. Local Pilates Instructor and Personal Trainer Alex Eversden said, “This is the 12th year we have organized ‘Together for Alzheimer’s’. It’s always a fun event that attracts both club runners and family walkers. The route started and finished at Birchwood Tourist Park, Wareham and we had a fantastic morning despite the wind and rain. There were 77 entrants of all ages and fitness levels. The first person over the line was Matt Bosanquet in 19:30 and in 4th place, the first lady was Lucy Eversden in 22:12. Congratulations to them and everybody else who joined in with their own personal targets. Thanks
also to all the great volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event such a success. So far we have raised over £1,100 for ‘The Alzheimer’s Society’ which does excellent work in helping those affected by Dementia as well as research to find a cure for this devastating disease. The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our muchloved campervan, has been missed. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere in the summer as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well, he was now determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. Can you believe it, we have never been? How ridiculous is that? I am sure that Daichi thought he could compete with all those immaculately dressed stallions. He rather fancied himself being groomed and brushed down. Or maybe it was all those jodhpurs and long leather boots, but that is going a little far as it is a family magazine after all. Daichi, really. The day was filled with blue

My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means at night when camping, the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the

23 atmosphere at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horse speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… oh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacey gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. Beautiful, graceful, stylish and wonderful to watch. The judges really have to
The end of a fantastic day
Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not til December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking admiringly at himself, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next I wonder! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

Tastes so good... CHICKEN PIE
This is a delicious recipe which is perfect for those chilly nights in. You can serve this with almost anything from chips or a healthier alternative or vegetables. And any excess pastry can be used as decoration on top.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. flour 200ml chicken stock 3 tbsp. double cream Sprig of tarragon Squeeze of lemon juice 1 handful button mushrooms (cut into quarters) 1 medium green pepper (sliced) 400g cooked chicken (shredded) 225g ready-made puff pastry 1 medium free-range egg (beaten)
Equipment: Saucepan (2), large oven proof dish Oven: Gas Mark 6, 200C Method: Melt half the butter in a saucepan before adding the flour. Cook on a low heat for 3 minutes. Pour in the chicken stock and turn up the heat and stir continuously until it is simmering. Then add in the cream and gently simmer until thickened. Next add the lemon juice and tarragon and switch off the heat. In a separate pan, fry the chicken with mushrooms and peppers with the rest of the butter. Once this is cooked add the sauce and mix together. Using the dish, pour in the chicken mixture. Then roll out the pastry onto a floured surface. Make sure it is flattened out until 1cm thick. Place the flattened pastry over the dish and cut off the excess around the sides. Cut a few holes into the top with a knife and brush the pastry with the beaten eggs. Bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes until the filling is hot and the top of browned. Serve and enjoy!
