Dare I say it but we are fast approaching that festive time of year… Indeed we are looking forward to taking our Hayden to see Father Christmas at Paultons Park for his Birthday this year. As he will be 9 I reckon this is my last chance!

Imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I got a phone call from Father Christmas - it turned out to be a lovely local man who has played the part every season for over 60 years! I am sure I had that same ‘trip of the heart’ when he said who he was. Do we ever really grow up?

As you might be thinking of opening your doors to the family… or escaping to other climes… perhaps a few things need doing around the house or garden?

If you are anything like us, ‘spare’ time seems to be getting less and less. Why not let someone else do the work for you?

PURBECK CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL WEEKEND THURS 29th NOVEMBER - SUN 2nd DECEMBER

KINGSTON CHURCH This year, in the heart of the Purbeck Villages, at the end of November and during the first weekend of December we have a really special Christmas Tree Festival at St. James’ Church, Kingston.

Local businesses, community groups and families have been invited to sponsor a tree for 4 days, decorating it with unique decorations, together with an opportunity to provide some publicity about their group. We shall celebrate advent with approximately 30 real trees, leading to an illuminated wooden nativity tableau, which will create a wonderful sight for us all to enjoy.

There will be presentations of live music and local singers at certain times throughout the festival, and also an even in g con cert on Saturday 2nd December. We also hope to hear the 10 church bells ringing and on Sunday 2nd Dec familiar Christmas carols will be played on the splendid organ. There will be plenty of seasonal refreshments and invitations to a wide range of Christmas events across the two Benefices of the Purbeck Hills and the Corfe Valley.

Please come and be inspired, as we aim to bring the focus back onto Jesus this Christmas, so that everyone who visits the Festival will be reminded of the true meaning of CHRIST mas.

Entry is free, with donations being shared between the Children’s Hospice, Julia’s House, and St James’ Church. Please see

Lucy’s recipe corner Choccy coconut balls Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl.

Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together.

Pour in the condensed milk.

Ingredients for 5 servings 250g digestive biscuits 45g desiccated coconut (plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in) 5 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 tin condensed milk (397g)

Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut.

Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set.

READER COMPETITON SLEEPING BEAUTY THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 8 DECEMBER 2012 – SUN 6 JANUARY 2013 Pantomime season returns to the Bournemouth Pavilion from Saturday 8 December as we welcome Sleeping Beauty.

This year’s offering is once again brought to you by UK Productions following a record-breaking production of Jack and the Beanstalk last year.

Returning to once again write, direct and star is venue favourite and Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis as Happy Harry, whose local gags, rapport with the audience and range of impressions always go down a storm with adults and children alike.

We’re also delighted to welcome back one of the best Panto villains Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse.

Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy.

However, our all-star cast doesn’t end there, as they’re joined by Asa Elliott from ITV’s Benidorm as the Prince and of

Charity Concert stars Military Band Bring along your flags and bunting for Last Night of the Proms with Wessex Military Band who will once again be in concert on Saturday, 17 November at 7.00pm at the Wareham Middle School in aid of The Brian Clark Breath of Life Fund. The concert will feature both traditional marches and old favourites together with a few new pieces ending in a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.

This is the third annual concert by the band organised to raise money for the British Lung Foundation in Brian’s Memory. To date the Fund stands at nearly £3,400 with £2,340 being raised from the previous concerts and Grand Raffles held during the evening.

Brian was born in Wareham and was very well known and much respected around the town and the Purbecks and was regularly seen playing in Wareham Town Band where he played for over 50 years in total until ill health forced him to give up his beloved music some 6 years ago. For most people though, Brian was best known as ‘Nobby’ or ‘Yogi’, the South Dorset coach driver that took hundreds of children to school and back during the 1960’s & 70’s from the surrounding areas to Wareham School.

Brian sadly passed away in March 2009 after suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) after which the family set up the Fund in Brian’s name and memory while raising money for this very worthwhile charity.

100% of the fund goes to the British Lung Foundation and the aim is to raise a further £1,000 from the evening.

Wessex Military Band (formerly the Army Air Corp Band) is based in Bridport and includes musicians from all over the south of England. It recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and since last year’s concert have performed at the Olympics in Weymouth, played at the Menton Lemon Festival in the South of France and a festival in Dulman, Germany.

Tickets for the concert are £5 to include refreshments and the evening will include a grand raffle.
