Hayden, our son had his first over night cubs “Expedition” last week. A two hour hike in the dark, then a night in a tent with 3 friends. He arrived back exhausted after 3 hour hours sleep he told me. Funnily enough, where I thought he maybe cold out in the open he told me he was too hot, which is why he couldn’t sleep! I couldn’t believe it, that really surprised me. It turned out they were “camping” indoors!! Now, do you need something doing in the house, the garden, or do you want a good evening out? Talking about wildlife...
Dorset’s Chalk Streams Most commonly found in the South of England, chalk streams are characterised by their crystal-clear waters. These wildlife-rich rivers have porous beds which act as aquifers, purifiers and reservoirs. Rainwater filters through the soft, white rock and emerges lower down the slope, cool and clean. Because rainwater is naturally acidic, it also absorbs the chalk’s rich minerals. These are then transported to the river. As Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows suggests, these rivers enable wildlife to thrive; birds, fish and mammals (such as the otter and vole) live off the rich nutrients. Salmon and trout frequent the sparkling, ‘gin clear’ waters and tall blades of grass line the banks while water crowfoot flowers in the stream. In the meadows nearby, flag iris and meadowsweet grow in clusters, creating a paradise for animals, fishermen and walkers alike. Unfortunately, these unique ecosystems are under threat. Due to an increase in demand, water companies extract too much water. The drought in early 2012 left many of these beautiful rivers dry. They are also threatened by invasive alien plants and have suffered from alterations by man over the years, reducing the suitability for spawning fish, burrowing water voles and the many important invertebrates that form the basis of the river’s rich wildlife. With funding from Wessex Water and Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty, Dorset Wildlife Trust have organised a restoration project: the Do rse t Wild R iv ers P ro jec t. T he partnership works with members of the local community, fishing groups and The Wild Trout Trust to repair the damage and restore the wildlife. The River Allen, which meanders for thirteen miles through the Dorset countryside, is one of the local chalk streams to benefit. Chalk streams are the richest river habitats for wildlife and the River Allen holds

the strongest population in Dorset of rare wildlife such as the native white-clawed crayfish. We now have a chance to do something to protect this important and vulnerable habitat and its wildlife before it is too late. It is essential that we protect these rare and fragile habitats. We can all make a difference if we think carefully about the water we use; if we use water carefully, we can protect these rivers and conserve the wildlife which depend on them. New play exploring the world of a boy on the autistic spectrum to tour nationally Hampshire based theatre company Forest Forge’s new production, The Boy at the Edge of the Room, is a gothic style fairytale exploring the world of a boy on the autistic spectrum and starts a national tour this Spring. “He was not like other boys… He did not see the world through the same eyes as us.” A boy called Tony struggles to fit in and find his place. He has a different way of looking at the world and longs to retreat to a place where he can be ‘’nothing more than small and far off’. Those surrounding him have little patience for his dreams, with the exception of his mother who will do anything to ensure his happiness. When a mysterious ‘dealer’ offers Tony the chance to make his dream come true, his mother must face a future without him... Director Kirstie Davis comments: “The Boy at the Edge of the Room is a gothic fairy tale for adults which has been inspired by a Victorian story by Lucy Clifford entitled Wooden Tony. Using puppetry, animation and live music we will bring this extraordinary story to life that explores a young boy who cannot deal with the world as he sees it and which leads to a shocking and haunting ending.” Writer Richard Conlon explains his motivation to write the play: "In May 2002 I read an article which opened my eyes to the Wooden Tony story and its wider implications. The gothic tale, thought to be the first known literary exploration of autism, inverts and predates the Pinocchio story and has been under my skin ever since. My desire is for this piece to be easily as visual as it is textual - I want the words to

The play has been informed by and developed with young people on the autistic spectrum and their parents, with advice from Hampshire Autistic Society. An audio and visual exhibition offering the opportunity to experience an artistic expression of what it feels like to be autistic in society today will accompany the production, and the run coincides with World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April. The Nature of Dorset... The Nature of Dorset website [www.natureofdorset.co.uk] has been my consuming passion for four years. It is my personal guide to the places to go to and the wildlife you can see in Dorset. It is “for the people of Dorset interested in wildlife and for people from elsewhere with an interest in the county’s wildlife.” The site features nearly 1,500 species of animals and plants, 180 nature reserves or areas with a high level of wildlife interest and over 20,000 individual records linking species and sites together to give species lists for sites and distribution maps for species. I have put hundreds of unpaid hours in to it and I pay for its hosting on the Internet but charge nothing for its use and keep it free of adverts; “Why?” you might ask.

I lived most of my life in Hampshire but my wife and I have long had a love for Purbeck and whenever we could we would drive down to Arne, Durlston and other favourite places. “One day, when I retire, we will move down there” I would say. Well, in the summer of 2006, circumstances were such that “move down” we did, to Wareham. Natural history had been my main leisure time interest for over 30 years and so my first task was to find out where we could go and what we could see in our newly adopted county. I spent many h our s t ra wli ng t he i nte rne t gathering up information from a whole range of web sites. Armed with a hit list of places and species off we went, camera at the ready and notebook in hand. I have been a compulsive collector of data all my life so I quickly acquired reams of notes! I needed something to organise my records and so invested in a computerised wildlife recording system. A quiet corner of Norden Heath where you can find the Silver Studded Blue in mid-summer
records locked away on my computer. Then I happened upon Drupal, a means of building on-line databases and web sites, and ‘bingo’ – the idea of the Nature of Dorset was born! So far the project has taken me to over 100 places in Dorset, many of which I would probably have never known about; most are stunningly beautiful and incredibly interesting. My personal favourites that I might have otherwise have missed include Alners Gorse, Hilfield Hill and Sovel Down. I still have over 80 identified sites to visit and I am finding more and more to add to that list. Many of the sites I have visited I want to return to, the draw of Powerstock Common, Kingcombe Meadows and Holt Heath is compelling. The project has also opened my

eyes to species I had never bothered with before; wasps, flies, beetles, spiders, grasses, ferns, mosses, lichens, fungi, all have broadened and extended my kn o wl e d ge an d a r ou se d m y interest. The digital camera and macro lens have revealed beauty I had never before seen in so many creatures and plants, all because I needed a photograph for the Nature of Dorset. The site is not a science based project; it fills a gap and provides the visitor to Dorset or the person with a newly emerging interest in nature with a starting point and a guide. The site now gets over 750 visits a month, a figure that is continually rising, from all over the world! I hope you find time to take a look and I hope you find something to interest you – a new place to go or something new to see this summer perhaps. Corfe Castle 1½ miles Easy No
A very pleasant short walk which takes you up onto the Ridgeway, giving excellent views in all directions. There is a family play area and a classic Purbeck country pub at the end! How to get there: Grid Reference 936917; Coming from Wareham, just before Corfe Castle, turn right for Kimmeridge and Chur ch Knowle. Proceed into Church Knowle and park in the New Inn Cart car park on the left (car park is just after the pub). Information:Toilets are available at the pub. Walk details:As you leave the car park, turn right and proceed using the right-hand pavement through the picturesque village for about ¼ mile. Do not turn right at the large finger sign for Swyre Head but continue to just past the ‘S’ bend. Just after the bend, and just after St Peter’s church, take the track to the left, signposted Public Bridleway. After 100 metres, you will meet 4 gates. Take the 2nd gate from the left which takes you directly behind the wooden building on your right. Follow the path for 150 metres up to the base of the Ridgeway. Here, you meet the path which runs along the base of the Ridgeway with Corfe Castle signposted to your right. However, at this gate turn left, signposted ‘Cocknowle ½ mile’, but for 10 metres only then bear right up the small path. Follow this for 70 metres to the next stile (care as you cross this stile as the terrain

slopes away from you on the far side). Turn right and follow the path for about 500 metres up onto the Ridgeway. As you approach the Ridge, bear left toward the Trig point (150 metres) where you will get panoramic 360 degree views across to Poole harbour, along to Tyneham Cap on the coastal path and down the valley towards Swanage. Continue past the Trig Point for 1/3 mile down to the road. Here, turn sharp left and proceed with care down the road for approx 250 metres on the right, taking care with the blind bend just past the house on the right and thatched cottages on your left. Just after that bend and just after the gate to Cocknowle cottage, turn left onto the track, signposted ‘Church Knowle ½ mile’. Go over the stile after 20 metres and head straight ahead to the gate in the corner of the field (300 metres). After this gate, bear slightly right toward the playing field where there is a stile in the corner of the field which faces you (150 metres). Go over this stile and head for the gate 100 metres ahead of you with the play area to your right and football pitch on your left. NCI lookout opens its doors The St Alban's Head station of the National Coastwatch Institution, on the coast path south of Worth Matravers, will be welcoming members of the public to its Open Days over the Easter weekend. The lookout will be open from 10am to 5pm on each of the four days, 29th March to 1st April. Visitors will be able to find out about the work of the volunteers who help to keep the sea and coast path safe for all users, and to inspect the equipment used. Hot drinks and home-made cakes and biscuits will be on offer. Everything is free, although donations will be welcomed.

Blondes are dumb? A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the Loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.
