Monkey World moves infant orang-utan to Europe’s only orang-utan crèche with VIP status throughout the journey Monkey Word has welcomed a new orang-utan this week, 21-month-old Bornean orangutan Loren, and given her a new adopted family. Born in Moscow Zoo, Loren was sadly rejected at birth by her mother and was hand-reared during the first months of her life by the Moscow keepers, while her move to Monkey World was arranged. Monkey World, home of the European Crèche for Orphaned Orang-utans, has a dedicated orang-utan nursery specially designed to develop strength, social skills and climbing confidence. Here infants can grow-up with their own kind, supervised by expert care staff. Straight away the team at Monkey World began introducing baby Loren to her new family and she was instantly accepted by her new adopted mum Roro! Already resident are Sumatran two year olds, Bulu-Mata and Rieke from Budapest and Berlin Zoos. The playful pair have joined Roro and baby Loren and the primate care staff have been pleased to see lively games between the youngsters already. Also part of Monkey World’s orang-utan nursery family are adolescent boys Silvestre and Jin and adult female Oshine. The adult ladies have a job keeping a watchful eye over this growing adopted family. Dr Alison Cronin, Monkey World Director, and Head of Monkey World’s orangutans, Jarno Swandi, travelled to Moscow, courtesy of IAG Cargo and British Airways, to meet baby Loren and travel back with her to the UK. Special arrangements were made and approvals given to allow baby
Baby Loren & new Adoptive Mum Roro Loren to travel in the passenger cabin so that this endangered baby travelled to her new home in comfort and safety throughout the flight. Dr Cronin said, “It took many months to arrange but government agencies from Moscow to London have worked tirelessly and given special permission for baby Loren to travel on board a passenger plane with British Airways and IAG Cargo. As a vulnerable infant, everything was done to ensure Loren’s journey was stress free on her way to get an adopted family that she needs and deserves. Everyone at Monkey World is pleased to welcome Loren, especially her new adopted family of six other orangutans.” Since arriving at the park, Loren was introduced to her new family, starting with adult female RoRo. RoRo’s gentle nature has allowed Loren to settle very quickly, and the pair have progressed to nesting down together in a hammock at night. With a fantastic adoptive mum, and fab new play mates in Bulu-Mata and Rieke, Loren’s future looks bright at Monkey World.

The Sunflowers Are Sprouting! Thirty-Seven shops, businesses and organisations have now signed up to be ‘Sunflower Venues’ in Swanage … amazing how the simple sunflower has caught everybody’s attention! The seeds sown back in April which were lovingly nurtured in little pots, have sprouted and are being planted out everywhere in town. Pupils from St. Mark’s joined forces with Durlston Country Park to sow 1000 sunflower seeds in April in readiness for the Sunflower Trail from Herston, over beautiful wildflower meadows all the way to Durlston. This project is part of a grant which Dorset County Council has given to Durlston, to encourage more people from Swanage to walk through the meadows to enjoy sea views, wildlife walks and picnics in the sunshine. When Durlston heard about ‘Sunflowers Over Swanage’ run by Emmanuel Baptist Church, they jumped at the chance to be involved. “We are now looking for volunteers – maybe dog walkers - to ‘adopt a pot,’ which they can water on their ‘walkies’ and keep the trail in bloom.” If you can help, please contact Cleo Evans by email: cleo@ theartsdevelopment company.org.uk.

Emmanuel Church’s Nutty Knitters decided to take the sunflowers a step further and they knitted some! A picture on Facebook caused a flurry of interest and not only are orders coming in for knitted sunflowers from Swanage – there’s a consignment of 50 already on its way to Australia too! The proceeds from these will go towards a third world farming project, Operation Agri. June will be a busy month with planting out celebrations at Emmanuel Baptist Church on the morning of June 3rd, at the Fun Day at All Saints in Ulwell on Saturday June 10th and also at St Mary’s in town on Saturday June 17th. There will be ‘spare seedlings’ at each event so if you haven’t already got one named in your honour, get along to one of these events and claim one, then see if yours grows to be the Tallest of the Tall in Town!
Meanwhile, Commercial Road have taken the sunflowers to heart and there was definitely a party atmosphere in the heart of the town last month when seedlings were planted out into bigger pots and placed outside shops and offices. With a golden ribbon

Concerned your tenant will miss payments? What is the biggest concern residential and commercial property owners face when letting out their property to new tenants? Usually, the answer is: having tenants that can’t, or won’t pay the rent. As a property owner, it’s very hard to gauge what type of tenant you’re getting and you never know when problems may arise; sometimes even the best tenants experience unexpected, out of their control, incidents that result in them unable to pay the rent. Where does that leave the landlord? Not all property owners are aware that there is, in fact, insurance cover available that can be put in place to cover for such event. So what actually is available to property owners on landlord schemes? Rent Guarantee Firstly, the guarantee of monthly rent – this is the bread and butter of the cover and claims are usually available on up to a maximum of 12 months’ worth of payments. Unruly tenants If you’re unfortunate enough to have unruly tenants, as part of your insurance policy, you can obtain cover for the costs and expenses in relation to the pursuit of legal proceedings

Go Wild in June... Nature is calling this June for all to join the Wildlife Trusts’ 30 Days Wild initiative. The challenge, brimming with motivation, wild ideas and examples of activities, has been set up to encourage everyone to get involved with all things wild. The initiative promotes the improved mental and physical well-being gained from interacting with nature, and aims to increase awareness on how to protect our invaluable environment. A Random Act of Wildness, the theme at the centre of the challenge, is about making time daily to connect with the natural world, or simply carrying out a small act to help the environment. You can use ideas you get in the pack as inspiration or create your own Random Acts. It’s also about experiencing, learning about, and helping wildlife in Dorset: the smallest act, such as putting up a bee hotel in your garden, can make a big difference to the little creatures all around us. It’s cold, wet, and miserable, so no wonder this is the peak summer holiday booking period. However, with the pound recently at a 32 year low against the dollar, and matching the awful rates of 2013 against the euro, this year it’s likely to be a challenge to get a decent price. The weak pound not only hits holiday spending, but hotels, car hire and more, so here are my 10 top tips for keeping costs down. 1. Pocket the perfect plastic to make the pound perform. Spend abroad and most credit cards add a 3% ‘non-sterling transaction fee’ which means £100 of euros costs £103 and some then load other charges on top. However, there are a range of specialist cards that don’t add that fee. So, you get that day’s same near-perfect rate that the banks do, in every country. My top two long term picks, as well as good exchange rates, have low cash fees - the www.creation. co.uk Everyday card and www.halifax. co.uk Clarity. Spending on these is super cheap, usually easily smashing the best bureau de change rates. Yet only do this if you’ll repay the card IN FULL each month, to avoid the 18.9% ish representative APR. It’s worth noting if instead of spending on the card you withdraw foreign cash and spend that, you will pay interest even if you clear in full, but even with that added they’re still not that costly. Once you know what hotel you want, always check to see if it’s being sold cheaper elsewhere, use comparison sites www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com for a wide-ranging search (and always call the hotel to see if it’ll beat the price). The difference can be £100s. 3. With car hire book it early and buy insurance elsewhere. If hiring abroad, generally early booking is cheaper, what costs £10 a day now can be £40 a day when you get there. Here’s the three key steps: a) Do a comparison to find your cheapest. I’d try www.kayak.co.uk, www.carrentals.co.uk and if needed www.skyscanner.net too. b) Check stealth fuel charges. Some try and make you pay for a full tank and return it empty - adding £80ish if you don’t drive far. The above, apart from Kayak, let you filter by fuel policy. c) Don’t fall for their insurance up-sell. When you pick up a car they’ll often try and fear sell you up to £25/day insurance on top – to cover the large excess if you have any claims. If you’ll pay for this, instead use excess insurance comparison site www.moneymaxim. co.uk before you go and you can often @MoneySavingExpert find a policy from £2 a day. Yet if you do

4. Find best holiday cash in seconds. The obvious start point again are comparison sites. My top picks are www.skyscanner. net, www.kayak.co.uk and www. momondo.co.uk which include most airlines and booking sites like Expedia and ebookers. Yet if you really want to slash flight costs, you need to get clever, such as using ethnic specialist travel agents and checking out airline code sharing deals. For full help see www. mse.me/cheapflights. 6. Don’t forget the good old fashion package holiday. Package holidays are where you usually get flights, hotels and transfers in one. They can still be the cheapest especially if you’re going away for 7, 10 or 14 days in a traditional holiday destination like Benidorm. Both www.travelsupermarket.com and www.icelolly.com have comparison sites. Then once you’ve got up a price, if you want to shave a little off, you can call up other agents to see if they’ll sell you the same holiday at a cheaper price. 7. Book travel insurance AS SOON as you book the holiday. Every year people email me saying something sadly akin to, “I’m due on holiday in a few months, but I’ve just been given a cancer diagnosis and can’t go, the airline won’t let me cancel, what can I do?” The answer is ‘that’s what travel insurance is
for’. Yet many people only book it just before they go. Waiting defeats half the point of having the cover – which is to protect you in the event cancellation is needed due to illness, a death in the family or something else. Full help on the cheapest policies, including for over 65s in www.mse.me/travelinsurance. 8. Booked EasyJet – keep checking the price. If your EasyJet price drops after you’ve booked it – excluding in a sale – you can just call it up to ask for the difference back in vouchers. Jo emailed: “We got an £803 voucher... all thanks to you.” 9. Check if your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid. The free EHIC means if you’re in an EU (and a few others) country you can use a state GP or hospital for the same price as a local, so if it’s free for them, it’s free for you. It’s valuable extra protection (alongside travel insurance). Yet it’s not valid for millions, this is nothing to do with Brexit, but simply that it has a valid until date and 5.3 million expired in the last year. Check yours, if it is, go to www. nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/ EHIC to get a new one for FREE (don’t Google this, you’ll find shyster sites trying to charge you to do it who add nothing to the process). 10. Be careful boozing on holiday. A final thought. If you’re going to drink on holiday (and let’s be honest, for many people that’s half what it’s about), remember this may invalidate your travel insurance claim. So, take it easy, and if you won’t take it easy, at least think about what belongings you’re taking with you! @MoneySavingExpert

1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.

Swanage Disabled Club We do have an urgent need for some new/extra drivers plus escorts to help out with our two Care Buses. Recently, due to illness etc. etc. our list has diminished considerably. This is a voluntary position where initial training will be given and the more drivers we have on our crew then it spreads the load. We meet on a Monday afternoon in Swanage either at the Catholic Hall, or Queens Mead Hall from 2pm - 4pm so it would be helpful if that day could be available from time to time. We also offer our specially adapted buses for local Rest Homes, other organisations and needs in the town, plus our own outings, so other times and dates may be required. It is always done on a Roster basis, so it is ‘if you are available’. Generally it is more beneficial to have male drivers, and female or male escorts would also be welcome. Do hope someone will be able to join our very friendly group and also be able to contribute to the community in this way. The Adventures of Nellie
The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Nellie took us fishing! This was another new experience for Nellie and she was rather excited. Grandma however was not so thrilled. Having been a fisherman’s wife for over 50 years the thought of one more day by the water was not so inspiring. I am sure any ladies out there with husbands who love to cast a line, will understand her reaction. When Dad proposed to Mum in 1962 he did add… “But I do go fishing…” Mum has never lived it down. As a child, nearly every Sunday of the fresh water fishing season, I loved to go to the ponds with Mum and Dad. Picnic in hand of course. Later when my sister was born, she was less enthralled and used to wonder off looking at the flowers and the birds. She still does that now! My best catch ever was a tench in Ireland when I ‘borrowed’ Dad’s huge rod (I was 13 at the

Nellie and family after a long day’s fishing time) and refused to let him help me bring the fish in. I was very proud of that one. Guess who takes after her Dad? So, Nellie was ‘chomping at the wheel’ to get going. Hordle Lakes near Lymington she decided to drive us to. It is a great place for the family as well as the more keen, carp fisherman. With separate lakes you can choose your level of skill. Bob’s Lake has recently had 30 pound carp added to it! Can you imagine getting one of those on your line? Well there were certainly men there who were doing just that. One man was having a cigarette after his line broke… he was looking into the sky dreaming longingly about the ‘one that got away’. Maybe us women should try and understand this more… We set up in “Tench Lake”. There was a family right next to us and with all the commotion we created I think they wish we hadn’t. Ever had that feeling? Hayden has fished with Grandad many times. In fact when he was only two years old he picked up a rod as if he was 50 and had done it all

23 his life. Funny how children do that. Now every time we go fishing with Dad we catch fish, and I mean a LOT of fish! Today was no exception. After two hours of catching common carp, F1 carp (those that have no barbels, are a hybrid and cannot regenerate - I found out), mirror carp, roach, and even a tench that Hayden caught, the fish were literally eating out of our hands. It was so good in fact Grandad taught Hayden the technique of “mugging” or “dobbing” where you quite honestly drop the maggot into the fishes mouth! That is illegal in match fishing of course, but Dad said the likelihood of being able to do that up north near Hull where they live, was nigh on impossible. Hayden (and Grandad) had fun with that. Hayden also learned the technique of using a feeding pot off the end of the rod, tipping the maggots into the water right where the float and hook are. Very clever. Now Stephen, unlike his son, was not born with a fishing rod in his hand…. He got the prize for the tiddlers and if he broke off once and lost the hook, he must have broken off twenty times. Nellie tried to tell him that it wasn’t a tug of war or a wrestling match. Maybe a light touch would work? It was all to no avail. The funniest part was when Stephen did get a fish on the hook and promptly started walking along the bank with it, taking the rod over Grandad’s

Debbie getting in on the action too! head (who ducked quickly, looking very quizzical), and continued marching along! Did I laugh. Nellie too! Of course it was another fish that got away and I don’t blame it, it was enough to scare the toughest ones off. We did explain that fish don’t have legs. Poor Stephen. Stick to the day job. Mum and I had gone for a rest. I thought we would be able to sit there for few hours relaxing, but that was not the case. We were up and down taking photos, videos, making cups of tea, getting burgers from the burger bar and generally keeping the men happy while they cast their lines and had a lot of fun. It was a great day all round. I am still not sure why the two men opposite decided to pack up and leave about an hour after we arrived. Oh oh… The skimmer bream were fun to watch on the water, the friendly robin sitting on Hayden’s rod, the gentleman who fishes every day having worked in aviation all his life and could talk for England… It is such a friendly place. The weather was beautiful. It is days out like this with the family that make life worth while. Pleasurable memories we can definitely look back on. Nellie was so pleased she was able to help and create such a moment. That is her purpose and what a great purpose to have. Where will she take us next? By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot
Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.
Jobs for June :-
• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.
Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

Miriam Margolyes By Tim Saunders Retirement is increasingly becoming a luxury of the past. While for some the cost of living is the reason, for others working is addictive and good for the soul. This desire to keep working can be found in all sectors, from scientists (Professor Stephen Hawking is 74) through to business people (Sir Alan Sugar is 69 and Sir Richard Branson is 66). And even in the world of fame. Seasoned entertainer Bruce Forsyth is 88 while David Attenborough the naturalist is 90. BAFTA award winning actress Miriam Margolyes is a comparative youngster at a mere 75. She is widely known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. Miriam is as busy as ever, not just with her acting but also her work as a voice artist. “Sorry we’re going to have to reschedule our interview,” she says to me, “I’ve got another job on.” But we’re able to catch up at a quieter moment. It is a craving for success that drives Miriam to work even harder. “I don’t think I’m as successful as I would like and I don’t think I’m as successful as people think I am. I’m just in the front rank of the second raters as Somerset Maugham put himself. I think I’m hugely talented and I think I have the potential to be great.” As a voice artist, she has quickly become wellknown to countless children the world over as Weathersnike in Bottersnikes and Gumbles. Set in Australia it tells the tale of the evil bottersnikes: ugly, lazy creatures whose ears become hot when they get angry. The Gumbles are small, giggly things who the bottersnikes
try to enslave to make them do all their chores. This programme is aired in both Britain and Australia, a relationship that works well for Miriam because she has divided her time between the two countries for years. In 2013 she was presented with her Australian citizenship certificate by then prime minister Julia Gillard. And she isn’t as wealthy as some might envisage. “I don’t have more than half a million in the bank… Some people would say that’s pretty wealthy but I think you have to have a million in the bank before you’re wealthy.” Miriam does own or part-own a few properties, a home in south-west London, a Tuscan farmhouse and a penthouse close to Bondi Beach in Australia. There are two facets to Miriam that have stood her in good stead. Her eloquent tones ensuring that her voice is familiar. And her appearance making her instantly recognisable on stage or screen. Miriam has a great ability to make any role memorable. Her career spans five decades. She has appeared in TV programmes including Crossroads, three Blackadders and even an Agatha Christie (2004). More recently she has appeared in Doc Martin and Kingdom. Her film appearances include The Age of Innocence (1993) where she won the BAFTA. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Miriam played the part of the Countess’ grandmother. The Countess was played by Michelle Pfeiffer. “But the thing that I am most proud of in my life is Dickens’ Women.” The one- person show includes 23 different characters based on or inspired by characters in Charles Dickens’ novels. Jewish, a Labour supporter and a lesbian, Miriam is her own harshest critic, known for her plain speaking. When she has time, she is passionate about genealogy and politics. “I have got back as far as 1790 with my family tree but it is difficult because records of Jews were destroyed in the Second World War.
