National Trust in Purbeck The National Trust is for a short time reintroducing grazing to an area of the Studland peninsula where cattle once roamed freely. As part of our heathland conservation work, a small number of hardy Red Devon cattle are being introduced to a triangular area south of the Northern Boundary permissive footpath to graze on rough grass and heather. Records dating back to the 1930s show that the whole of the Studland peninsula was once grazed by cattle which roamed at will in much the same way as they still do in areas like the New Forest. Gradually grazing fell out of fashion around Studland until it was restarted by the National Trust on Godlingston Heath. More recently, specific areas of Studland Heath either side of Ferry Road have been set aside as short term grazing areas for small numbers of cattle. The latest area is surrounded on two sides by mire, which will prevent the cattle straying, while a temporary fence has been put up along the side nearest the footpath. The plan is to allow cattle to graze this area for a time in the weeks leading up to the start of the school summer holidays. They will then be removed during the peak visitor season and may be re-introduced for a time in September. The effects of grazing will be studied as part of the Cyril Diver Project, a three-year study to compare the natural scene in Studland today with detailed ecological records made in the 1930s, when the whole peninsula was grazed. Grazing, along with other traditional methods, is widely used by the National Trust and other landowners to maintain historic heathland landscapes and preserve the habitat of the many rare plants and animals which live there.

National Trust rangers are working with members of Disabled Ramblers to make the delights of the Purbeck countryside accessible to everyone. Ranger Dave Williams and Disabled Ramblers Secretary Valerie Rawlings are identifying routes suitable for electric class three mobility scooters, which can be used off road. “The aim is to allow those with mobility problems to enjoy the countryside in as natural a way as possible,” said Dave. “It’s a question of identifying routes which are accessible wherever possible rather than adapting routes to fit,” he added. “The disabled ramblers I have spoken to want to visit wild countryside and they are not really keen on tracks. They want to go to the places the ramblers do, but they realise they can’t get to everywhere.” Some small adaptations have been made to existing routes however, including two wooden bridges on Studland Heath, and more may follow as the network of routes grows. As well as Studland, the project has looked at the Priest’s Way near Langton Matravers and Middlebere Heath. Some gates still need to be adapted for scooter users and not all routes are fully accessible in winter when heathland can become boggy. Valerie said projects like the Purbeck initiative made a big difference to the lives of ramblers who are not able to access many traditional paths. “If I didn’t have my scooter and the paths weren’t improved and accessible we wouldn’t be able to see half of what we do see,” she said. “As a disabled rambler, this sort of facility is so important because it means we can get out into the countryside and access the wonderful views, the fresh air and wildlife.” Jon Bish, Communications Officer

Talking about Wildlife...
Darting Dragonflies With summer at long last here it is rewarding to watch some of the richly coloured wildlife that is now about, such as the dragonflies and damselflies darting about over our ponds and water courses. Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is carrying out surveys of these short-lived species in the Purbeck region, during the coming months. Having been living as larvae in a water bed, sometimes for a number of years, once hatched these ephemeral fliers may survive for only a few weeks; even the largest dragonflies, for example, will live for a maximum period of two months only. The survey last month revealed some of the first of the species to be on the wing, such as the Large Red and Azure damselflies, Banded Damoiselles, as well as the Four Spotted Chaser dragonfly. Ali Quinney, carrying out the surveys for DWT, says, “On our first day of recording we were fortunate to have a really calm, bright sunny day, the perfect conditions in which to spot these beautiful creatures. Later we shall expect to see Darters, various Hawkers and hopefully some rarities; on Tadnoll Brook, the chalk stream that runs through our Tadnoll & Winfrith heathland nature reserve, we may well see Golden Ringed dragonflies.”

Four Spotted Chaser by Ken Dolbear MBE It is often asked how one can spot the difference between a dragonfly and a damselfly. The former has a more robust body shape and flies faster, whereas the latter is more slender and dainty in its movements, tending to ‘float’ rather than to fly. Another distinguishing factor is to watch when they settle, when the dragonfly stays poised with wings outspread and the damselfly retracts its wings over its body length. Work is to continue at DWT’s Tadnoll & Winfrith reserve, subject to planning approval, to create two more scrapes there, to encourage more of these species and other water orientated wildlife. The survey work that is now taking place is proving greatly beneficial to our existing knowledge of the wildlife in the area and all records are passed to Dorset Environmental Records Centre (DERC). Exercise proves its worth The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) watchkeepers at St Albans Head recently held a ‘table-top’ training exercise at Worth Matravers village hall. Teams were presented with an invented scenario where a yacht had lost power and was drifting dangerously close to the shore, but the organisers of the exercise threw in other complications to test the watchkeepers to the full. These included someone having had a heart attack on the coast path, so a member of the team had to go and use a defibrillator like the one which has recently been installed at the station and on which all watchkeepers have received special training. One of those taking part said, ‘Although the exercise was done a couple of miles
from our lookout the sea, it is surprising how realistic it feels – including the pressure when the situation gets more complicated. Certainly my team made some mistakes, but it was tremendously valuable to learn from them, and better to make them in that situation than in a real emergency.’

Jurassic Jaunt: Kimmeridge Quarry, West Circular Route Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions:
Kimmeridge 4 miles Easy/Medium Yes - Check range opening times A 4-mile walk with great panoramic views of Kimmeridge Bay. An initial flat ridge walk then dropping down to Kimmeridge Bay. It has one 100m steep ascent at the end of the walk. How to get there: Grid Reference; 918801. Turn right for Kimmeridge/Creech off the Wareham Bypass. Follow the road for about 4 miles, up onto the ridge and descend the other side. Turn right for Kimmeridge and after about a mile, just after a right hand bend, park in the quarry car park on the left. Information: There is a village shop with toilets in Kimmeridge about ½ mile further down the road, and about ¼ from the end of the walk. Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right for 30 yards before crossing the road to the stile on the inside of the bend. Go over the 2nd stile which takes you out along the ridge.
Follow the ridge for about 1 mile, pass through the metal gate which is the boundary to the MOD ranges and bear left down the track, then around the field, down to the metal gate at the cliff top. Turn left through the gate, past the famous ‘Nodding Donkey’ oil-extraction site and follow it towards the Kimmeridge bay and car park. After about 100 yards on the tarmac road, just opposite the cottages, there will be the path on the left which you will return to the start but if you wish, carry on to the bay and grassy car park which has several items of interest including the famous Kimmeridge Ledges and Clavells Tower on the cliff ahead. To return, take the path off the tarmac road, follow the path along the edge of 2 fields. At the 3rd gate/field entrance, bear right to a 2 stiles in the right-hand hedge (1/4 mile). Go over the right-hand stile then bear left along the hedge to the gate at the edge of the village. Go through the gate, turn left onto the main road in the village. Just after Clavell’s café and shop (on the right), there is a sharp right-hand bend in the road. Go straight ahead, up the side of the Church and up to the stile on the bend, 50 yards from the quarry car park. Turn right and return to the car park. Jurassic Jaunts www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk

14. BE WORTHY OF TRUST Unless one can have confidence in the reliability of those about one, he himself is at risk. When those he counts upon let him down, his own life can become disordered and even his own survival can be put at risk. Mutual trust is the firmest building block in human relationships. Without it, the whole structure comes down. Trustworthiness is a highly esteemed commodity. When one has it, one is considered valuable. When one has lost it, one may be considered worthless. One should get others around one to demonstrate it and earn it. They will become much more valuable to themselves and others thereby.
14-1. KEEP YOUR WORD ONCE GIVEN When one gives an assurance or promise or makes a sworn intention, one must make it come true. If one says he is going to do something, he should do it. If he says he is not going to do something, he should not do it. One’s regard for another is based, in no small degree, on whether or not the person keeps his or her word. Even parents, for instance, would be surprised at the extent they drop in the opinion of their children when a promise is not kept. People who keep their word are trusted and admired. People who do not are regarded like garbage. Those who break their word often never get another chance. A person who does not keep his word can soon find himself entangled and trapped in all manner of “guarantees” and “restrictions” and can even find himself shut off from normal relations with others. There is no more thorough self-exile from one’s fellows than to fail to keep one’s promises once made.

One should never permit another to give his or her word lightly. And one should insist that when a promise is made, it must be kept. One’s own life can become very disordered in trying to associate with people who do not keep their promises. It is not a casual matter.

As an alternative use a lambs wool or microfibre wash mit. These are less likely to pick up abrasive grit. “Avoid washing in direct sunlight as you will find that your soap will dry quickly. Wash in the shade. The paintwork is cooler and you will have more time to clean without having to worry about your

Hayden found two friends and they spent their time running around, playing games, on and off the bouncy castles, body zorbing and even watching a film in the friend’s converted VW. Stephen and I had time to lay around and sunbathe which I have to say is a rarity. We weren’t as prepared as usual though having worked on the magazines almost right up to leaving. This was definitely a lesson to learn! What I had done, I had very carefully packed the food…salad, tinned tuna, hot dogs, beans, all in preparation for our Nellie picnics.

Meeting Fiffi at Vdub at the Pub What I hadn’t done was pack the tin opener or any pans! It is amazing how needed they were with what I had packed, and salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner just gets boring. Fortunately there was a food tent and the breakfast there was a welcome sight. The neighbours in the caravan behind us were really accommodating too and lent us a pan for the evening, so the hot dogs didn’t go to waste. Anyway, what we have decided to do now, in light of this experience, is have two of everything, one set in Nellie and a separate set in the house. That way I don’t have to worry about it! It is all a learning curve as the saying goes… Hayden slept the best he has done that night in Nellie. The last time we went camping in the New Forest, Hayden had developed tooth ache literally just before leaving and that was an interesting night with him up every hour and then a trip to the dentists. This time all was well and we all slept until after 8am. Hoorah! There were some really interesting vans at this Festival and one of the cutest was Fiffi the Ice Cream Van! What a great idea. On the sunny day we had she was a very popular van to visit! So camping at a festival was a new experience for us and one we really enjoyed. Live music, family fun and a great atmosphere. Following their theatre tour with TV’s “Military Wives” the “The Big Band” show will be returning for a one night only performance at the Mowlem Theatre, Swanage on Sunday 29th June. The show, performed by Five Star Swing, promises a host of classic Big Band / Swing songs from artists such as Frank Sinatra & Glenn Miller through to Jools Holland style. Following this one night appearance the band will be whisked directly to London’s West End to appear on stage with the critically acclaimed musical “Bugle Boy” (Glenn Miller Story). Simone, from Hayling Island, sings and plays lead Alto Saxophone in the band and has also performed with prestigious artists such as Paul Weller, John Williams, Ivy Benson Show Band and a Saxophone solo on the Paul Merton T.V show. Husband bandleader, Chris Smith also sings, plays Trumpet & Piano and is well known in the Jazz world for his arrangements and compositions frequently played on Jazz FM and BBC Radio Big Band and even the Three Degrees. His varied career includes

performances on - Top of the Pops, Breakfast TV with Herb Miller (Glenn Miller’s brother) and a solo performance on the Michael Caine film “Silver Bears”. Tony Bennett’s trombonist, Mike Innes will also be appearing. Chris says, “It’s great that there’s a strong resurgence in Jazz and Swing music enjoyed by all generations, mainly thanks to artists such as Robbie Williams Jamie Cullam and Michael Buble. One of my favourites songs is Mr Bojangles by Sammy Davies Jnr’. I’ve been brought up with this style of music as my father (Chris Smith Snr) played trombone with Frank Sinatra on his European tours. We’re looking forward to bringing the show back to town.”

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation.

Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed.
Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.
Concentrate on salad crops to keep lettuce and radish etc. crisp and don’t worry so much about crops and plants with deeper roots. If you can catch rainwater in a water butt or
