Dear Swanage, I love this time of year! There are lots of shows, family holidays, the sun is shining, the air is warm and we all seem to have more time to get together and generally enjoy ourselves. There is of course the very popular Swanage Regatta and Carnival, not to be missed! There is also a Jurassic Walk around Corfe Castle and guided walks around Lulworth. The Mowlem Theatre has a great, classic movie for you and The Swanage Railway is always a winner. Swanage Lifeboat week is coming, and there is a really interesting article about Ernest Herbert Pitcher, VC who will be commemorated on 10th August. Such a lot of excitement and good reasons to get outside and enjoy our wonderful English environment and heritage. In this month’s issue of The Swanage Oracle there are lots of local trades, businesses and shops who want to make your summer a good one! From fixing those leaking pipes, to care work, resin drives, to tool and plant hire, restaurants, car repairs, accountancy services, to replacing those old kitchen tops and doors or even having a great hair cut! The stations at Norden, Corfe Castle, Harmons Cross, Herston and Swanage provide access to historic villages, country walks and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Rebuilt from nothing Swanage Railway, an award winning standard gauge preserved steam railway, offers one of the country’s most intensively operated heritage steam and diesel timetable train service than virtually any other preserved railway. Trains run daily from April to October as well as most weekends throughout the year. Steam and Diesel Galas , family fun events plus regular evening and lunchtime “Wessex Belle” and “Dorsetman” dining services and the very popular “Afternoon Dorset Cream teas” complement themed events such as the highly popular “Santa Special” trains in the run up to Christmas. Swanage Railway is part of a great day out in Purbeck. Whilst you travel down to Swanage, with its blue flag beach, Victorian pier, shops and restaurants you can appreciate the rich history of the area, abundant wildlife, fascinating geology and the influence the region had on authors such as Enid Blyton and Thomas Hardy. How you can help us improve our hospitals This is the year of change for our hospitals. We are focused on making improvements and delivering excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere - and you can help us. One of our key values is communication; this means taking time to listen and learn from our patients, visitors and our staff and making improvements. Here are just two examples of changes we have made:
Elderly short stay ward Ward 22 is now a short-stay ward for elderly patients. Designated social workers, discharge planning workers and experienced therapists have joined the nursing and medical staff on the ward and are enabling patients to get home sooner. Staff nurse and discharge planner, Victoria Coe, says: “It is great to see patients going home more quickly which makes them happy, and means we can spend more time with them when they are here.”
Same day emergency treatment Not all patients attending hospital as an emergency need to be admitted. We have expanded our Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) services so that patients referred by their GP, or seen in the Emergency Department, can receive same day care with follow up if necessary. We can also support early discharge by reviewing patients in AEC. Lead nurse Sonia Mahmoud, says: “Our patients are leaving happy in the knowledge that all their assessment needs have been met within a safe and friendly environment.”
Your feedback Your feedback is very important to us. It helps us know where we need to improve and we have a number of different ways of asking our patients for their views. The Patients Association is supporting us with a Care Campaign Audit. Patients are asked about their care while they are here and any areas for improvement are immediately fed back to the ward so any concerns can be acted on quickly. Here are just some of the changes we have made recently following patient comments: You said: “It would be nice to have the same nurse treating me.” We did: Implemented bay-based nursing where a nurse is assigned to a bay and is accountable for that bay.

You said: “Visiting time is too short to visit patients and talk to staff about patient care.” We did: We have lengthened visiting times to improve access to staff. Patients who require assistance with eating meals during their hospital stay are also able to turn to their families and carers for assistance, with support from hospital staff. You said: “Pharmacy was very slow and took three hours to dispense medication on day of discharge.” We did: A new pharmacy tracker screen to track prescriptions has been installed. Two new healthcare assistants now assist with medication sign-off and ward staff are working more closely with Pharmacy to anticipate when a patient may be discharged.
Learning from complaints We know things don’t go right all of the time, but we can learn a lot from your feedback when care doesn’t live up to the high standards we aspire to. Delivering high quality care includes dealing with complaints in a positive, open and understanding way. We have reviewed our complaints policy and are now even more focused on understanding the issues to be addressed. We are responding more quickly and meeting with those who have raised concerns so they are fully involved in the process. These are your hospitals and you can help us shape the way we deliver care. We want to provide a quality service that meets your needs so we will continue to listen and deliver excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere.

Bee wildlife friendly This summer, make your garden bee friendly. Bees are fundamental to the ecosystem, the food chain and our health; they enable the plants around us to grow by pollinating their flowers. The foods we eat – fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds – depend upon this process, as do many animals and birds. There are over 250 species of bees in Britain, including the bumblebee, the solitary bee and the honeybee. Solitary bees live alone, but bumblebees and honeybees live in large colonies which can contain up to 50,000 bees. Most of the bees in these colonies work by gathering pollen, which they bring back to the hive on their back legs. This pollen is transformed into honey. An individual worker bee can visit 14,000 flowers a day. Pollen is transferred between from the anther (the male part) of one flower to the stigma (the female part) of another. When a bee finds a good source of food, it dances in a figure of eight pattern. The angle of this dance in

relation to the sun tells other bees where the food source is. Other bees in the colony will then fly to the plant to collect pollen and nectar. Unfortunately, factors such as modern farming practices have made life harder for bees to find natural habitats, and this has led to a steep decline in their numbers. Beekeepers work to protect the bee population by maintaining their own colonies, some of which are used to provide pollination services to farmers, but more help is needed. If you want to help conserve the bee population, fill your garden with beefriendly flowers. These flowers are rich in pollen and nectar. Recommended plants include foxgloves, Californian poppies and geraniums, but you should fill your garden with a wide variety so that at least two flowers are in bloom each season. Suburbia Barbershop The new barbershop is proving popular in its’ central town location. We are already receiving many compliments. One client has told one of our barbers that she is the best barber in town. Another has told us that he has been everywhere in town for his haircut and we are the only barbershop to do it properly. We are very grateful for these compliments as we have been through some tough times lately. It proves that there is a need for high quality barber services – services we are anxious to provide.
Colour Maintenance We are being asked about ways to maintain natural hair colour. This service is available utilising some of our L’Oreal colour products. It can be applied in a fairly short time and if used regularly, will maintain or improve your natural hair colour. It can be a gradual and unnoticeable process. The colour
becomes part of the hair so it will not rub off on clothing and looks totally natural. Our barbershop has two separate service areas so a confidential chat about this concept is easy.
Wi Fi We now have Wi Fi connected and you are welcome to use this facility if you have to wait.
Senior Ladies Club We have decided to set aside Thursdays for our special ladies day. We believe that a trip to the hairdressers should be the highlight of the week and we invite you to join our Club and enjoy lower prices, tea and biscuits and stay and have a chat. This is a good way to meet people and socialise a little. We will not be accepting appointments from non club members on Thursdays, once this has become established. This will enable us to give everyone full attention. If you need a Taxi to take you home, please ask and we will call one for you. Please support this initiative to make it a success for all.
Shampoo We have expanded our range of shampoos that we use within the Salon. We have always used top of the range shampoos and they have all been colour protection products. We still have INOA Colour Protect but have added Volumetry, to give extra volume and the luxurious Mythic Oil shampoos. We will be using the corresponding Conditioner for each shampoo. 13 warning about allergy tests. The widely used term “skin test” does not help. It leads people to believe that the potential problem is skin damage. This is a possibility but the allergic reaction can be far worse and includes breathing problems caused by swelling. Colour is an exciting opportunity but please be aware that all professional salons will need to protect you.

Allergy Testing We recently had a potential client asking for a colour appointment. On being informed that she would need to be allergy tested, 48 hours before the service, she decided to go to another salon. This is unfortunate but we will not compromise our Duty of Care or ethics for the sake of a quick buck. It has recently been agreed that retailers will no longer supply home hair colour kits to people under 16 years of age. Salons should not colour the hair of this age group either and parental consent is needed for age 16 – 17. This Code of Conduct gives some indication of how necessary it is to follow the manufacturers

Reflections from the ‘COMMUNICARE’ Special Thanksgiving for 30 Years of Service 1984-2014 We had a spendid Service of Thanksgiving, held on Thursday 5th June at the new Emmual Baptist Church & Community Centre. We had ‘Looking Back’ over all the 30 years by various people who had gone through the various stages of Communicare which opened up a lot of peoples eyes and showed the full extent of our work. So many people said what a very happy and joyous time it was, thanking God, together for all that wonderful work done all voluntary by so many people. Within the congregation there were people of 90 - 100 years of age who had helped from the very beginning, and all churches within Swanage and District were represented, together with various people from Purbeck who gave their personal thanks of how
Communicare helped them. We produced a brochure which included the Order of Service - a list of 233 names of people who had served with us from the very beginning - together with 30 years of statistics which showed our growth over those years....from 200 jobs being done per year in 1984 to 1,656 jobs being done in 2014 per year - with a grand total of 21,464 over 30 years. Should anyone reading this feel that they can help us in any way, either with driving to hospital (they do get a petrol allowance), shopping, helping the carer, etc. etc. please do ring either 01929 288092 or 01929 421136.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the
23 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. Visitors invited to TG FKUEQXGT /WNYQTVJ Visitors to the Jurassic Coast are being invited to take a closer look at area’s unique qualities in a series of events and activities organised by the Lulworth Rangers. The Rangers, who help look after the 20 square mile Lulworth Estate including five miles of the Jurassic Coast are sharing their knowledge through a programme of guided walks, creative workshops, farm visits and hands-on discovery sessions throughout the summer months.
“Most of the events are free or carry just a small covering charge and take place in some of the most glorious locations of anywhere along the Jurassic Coast.” ‘There are many stories to tell about this part of the coast and countryside and knowing them can only enhance everyone’s experience’, explained Education Ranger Derek Billings. ‘The spectacular rock formations of Lulworth are unique, but it’s only when you discover that they illustrate 85 million years of the earth’s history that they get really interesting. Similarly, we are inviting

visitors to discover the habits of bats and moths, butterflies and sea creatures and to take part in beach art, fossil making and wildlife photography’. The programme of events takes place in and around Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and East Lulworth on the privately owned Lulworth Estate. Memorial for Ernest Pitcher

Ernest Herbert Pitcher, VC On Sunday, 10th August 2014 the Royal Marines Association (Poole & District Branch) are holding a commemorative service in Swanage, Dorset to honour Chief Petty Officer Ernest Pitcher, the holder of the Victoria cross; the Distinguished Service Medal; French Medaille Militaire and the French Croix de Guerre and three other Royal Navy personnel, including one for ‘Boy 1st Class’. The Northbrook Cemetery where these graves are located and which is now disused, holds a total of 28 graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Pitcher was born Dec 31 1888(9) at Mullion, Cornwall and he joined the Royal Navy at age 15. He was one of the earliest recruits for the Q-ship program spearheaded by Commander Gordon Campbell, VC. The Q-ships were specially-outfitted and armed merchant ships designed to present easy targets to U-boats. When a U-boat surfaced, the Q-ship dropped the camouflage hiding its armament and opened fire. As one of a handful of regular Royal Navy men in ships largely manned by former merchant seamen and reservists Pitcher was one of Campbell’s most effective hands, being Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Victoria Cross, all within a six-month period. Pitcher earned his V.C. for action aboard the Q-Ship HMS Dunraven in the Bay of Biscay, August, 8, 1917. Petty Officer Pitcher was serving as the crew chief for the Dunraven’s single four-inch gun when it was attacked by the U-boat UC71. A shell from the U-boat’s deck gun

Chief Petty Office Ernest Pitcher, VC struck the Dunraven’s poop deck where the four-inch gun was disguised by a fake hatch and phony laundry hanging out to dry. The shell set off one of the Dunraven’s concealed depth charges, and while thick smoke obscured the hidden gun crew’s view ports and fire threatened to set off powder and shells in the magazine below the poop, Pitcher and his crew maintained their stations, not wanting to give the game away. But before The Dunraven had a chance to spring its trap, another shell from the UC-71 made a direct hit on the poop deck and blew it skyhigh. Despite the devastation, the gun crew survived. Pitcher cartwheeled through the air and landed near the engine-room, sustaining wounds in several places. The shell had set off
29 The Dunraven’s alarm buzzers, and one of the remaining 12-pounder guns had gotten off a couple of shots before the U-boat submerged. Campbell could have cut his losses and headed for home, but he chose to stand and make a fight of it. Unfortunately, in the ensuing battle the Dunraven came off secondbest. The UC-71 made its escape after having made a direct hit with one of its torpedoes, and the Dunraven sank 36 hours later. The award of the V.C. was made to Pitcher as a representative of the four-inch gun crew, the rest of whom received Conspicuous Gallantry Medals.
The Commemorative Service will be held at St Mary’s Parish Church, Kings Road, Swanage, where a plaque exists in memory of Ernest Pitcher, followed by a short parade to Northbrook Cemetery for a graveside service on Sunday, 10th August, 2014 the timings as follows:
After the war Pitcher remained in the Navy, retiring in 1927 after twentyfive years service. Between the wars he worked in a boys school as a PT instructor, wood shop teacher and groundskeeper and also operated an “off-license” (package store). He rejoined the Navy for World War II, serving at a number of home islands stations. He passed away at the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital, Sherborne, Dorset on Feb 10th 1946.

His medals, including the French Croix de Guerre and Medaille Militaire, are now owned by Lord Ashcroft and are on display in the Imperial War Museum, London. In November 1920 Ernest Pitcher, together with a group of other VC and GC holders formed a Guard of Honour when the Unknown Warrior was interned in Westminster Abbey and also at the dedication of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.
