This time of year we start to see the season of summer fayres and fetes. Hopefully the weather will be kind and perhaps not quite so “British”, to give these wonderful events the best possible attendance.

Although we do always try and enjoy them, in true British Style, whatever the weather! On that note our son’s school recently held both their sports day and summer fayre. Stephen has to admit that his neck is a little sunburnt after a glorious afternoon on the school field watching the displays of country dancing, karate and even a field gun that is going on a sponsored ‘pull’ later in the year. Hayden was very proud that his ‘red team’ won at the sports day… And he was chosen to help collect the overall trophy! That is his last year at the school, so one to be remembered. We love those pleasant memories, don’t we. I bet you have some of your own. Maybe you would even like to tell us about one of them and email a photo to go with your story?

Take part in The big ask and help shape your local NHS Health organisations across Dorset have come together to ask you to take part in The big ask - a unique survey which will help shape NHS services in the future.

We are asking for your views on a whole range of NHS services, from your local GP and out of hours’ services to community, mental health and hospital services. The survey will look into how well informed you are about the various services available locally, how you choose your health care and what services you use the most. It will also ask how you think the NHS can provide information in the most effective way. Most importantly, it will seek your opinions on the NHS in Dorset – what you value the most and what can be improved.

Announcing the launch of the project, Dr Forbes Watson, Chair of the NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group says: “It’s called The big ask for a reason. We are not just asking you for tick box responses. This is an in-depth analysis of your views. Everyone has a view on the NHS but The big ask is whether you are prepared to provide us with some really thought provoking responses that will help shape services in the future.

“More than 750,000 people live in the region.

This survey will ensure that patients and the public are at the heart of any decisions we make about the future of the NHS in the county. It will ensure we fully understand how people use our services and what they think our priorities should be.”

across the county have worked together on an exercise of this scale. It includes the major hospitals in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorc hester and Po o l e wo r k i n g together with the Dr Forbes Watson newly-formed Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, which represents the county’s 101 GP practices, and Dorset HealthCare, which provides community health ser vices across a wide range of locations.

To ensure the exercise is independent it is being carried out by Bournemouth University’s Market Research Group. More than 12,000 people will be sent the survey but anyone can take part.

“An ageing population, new treatments and rising expectations all require the NHS to continue to adapt and develop, but limited taxpayer funding makes the challenge greater each year,” continues Dr Watson. “Ensuring that NHS care remains of the highest quality, accessible and up to date means we need to establish our priorities and make some careful decisions over the next couple of years.

“That is why this survey is so important and we want as many people as possible to have their say,” he adds.

CORNER Making a Will

Making a will is something that many people tend to avoid, on the basis that it is ‘morbid’, ‘not needed yet’ and a myriad of other reasons. Well, whilst the thought of what happens after our death is perhaps scary or uncomfortable, the reality is that at some point it IS going to happen!

So why not bite the bullet and get it done, out of the way and make a resolve to review it at regular milestones so that should the worst happen unduly early at least you know your loved ones have provisions made for them, big or small.

Writing a will ensures that it is YOU who makes the decisions over your property and possessions after your death. It’s a good idea to get help when writing your will but you can do it yourself. Make sure you are over 18 years old; writing it voluntarily and you are of sound mind; signed by yourself in the presence of two witnesses and also signed by those witnesses too. Of course you also need to make sure it is held in a safe place accessible after your death. There are many companies available who can assist with this, or a family solicitor can also store your documents.

Make sure that you make statements about who you want to benefit from your will; who should look after any children under 18 years of age; who you wish to act on your behalf to carry out the wishes laid out in your will and what happens if the people who you want to benefit die before you do.

Dorset Buttons Morris and Rapper 35 years ago some young women set up Dorset Buttons hoping to keep fit, have fun and make friends while Morris dancing. Dorset Buttons ladies are still dancing and have been joined by a men’s Rapper sword dance side.

Both groups practice weekly through the winter and dance out at all sorts of venues during the summer. As well as keeping active and social, Dorset Buttons raise money for charity by sending round the potty when they are dancing out.

This year our traditional Easter Monday tour took place in Lymington. Later in the year we will be at the Wine Festival in Rüdesheim, Swanage’s German twin town. We have also danced in local pubs, a residential home, a shopping centre and at a camping festival.

In September you can catch up with us at Swanage Folk Festival.

We would really like some new members to join us in the autumn for our practice sessions in Wareham and Sandford. If you think you might like to play in the band, or dance with either the ladies’ or the men’s side, please contact Helen on 01929 480737.

Tastes so good...

STRAWBERRY SHERBET

Succulent, fragrant and local. The local strawberry industry from the 1860’s gave rise to jam production and the ‘strawberry specials’ - trains delivering our lovely local produce to London and around the UK. To celebrate our Strawberry Coast here’s a wonderful modern twist on an old fashioned sherbet. As well as being delicious, there are health benefits in these little gems including impressive amounts of Vitamin C and high levels of anti oxidants.

Equipment: Food processor or jug blender.

Ingredients for 4 servings 300g fresh local strawberries A few turns of cracked black pepper 2 or 3 squares of dark grated chocolate, chili flavor optional to decorate.

30ml fresh lemon juice 30g caster sugar 250ml cold refrigerated whole milk Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Method: Wash and remove any green leaves or stalks from the strawberries. Pop four aside and freeze the rest for 40 minutes to 1 hour until softly frozen. Dice 3 and slice 1 of the 4 strawberries. These are to be added to the finished sherbet. The slices will be used for the topping. Grate the chocolate. Place frozen strawberries in a food processor with sugar and lemon juice. Pulse to chop them initially then run processor until almost a puree. Pour the milk through the feed tube into the mix whilst still processing until the ingredients are ONLY JUST blended. Stir in diced fresh strawberries and a few turns of cracked black pepper before spooning into dessert dishes. Garnish with sprigs of fresh mint, slices of strawberry and grated chocolate.

An excellent 4 mile walk providing excellent views over Weymouth and Portland and the option to visit the famous ‘King George III on Horseback’ carving on the Osmington hillside.

How to get there: - Grid Reference 705836.

On the way to Weymouth, about 1 mile after Osmington, turn right for Sutton Poyntz. Park on the road near or opposite The Springhead pub alongside the small river runs through the village.

Walk details:- Proceed up the road past the pub and turn right up the lane at Cob Cottage.

You will soon pass through 2 gates about 50 metres apart. Go straight on across the field for about 500 metres to a stile in the corner, on again to a gate (300 metres) and then on to the stile in the hedge (300 metres).

Proceed for another 300 metres to a gatesize gap in the hedge. Continue to follow the

White Horse, Osmington Hardy Way signs and head for the Purbeck Stone house ahead of you.

At the pedestrian gate opposite the house (1/3 mile), turn left toward the White Horse and Bincombe.

Follow the track, go through the gate (1/3 mile) and start to ascend towards the Ridgeway.

At the top turn left, signposted Bincombe 2 ½, White Horse ¼ mile.

You are now on the Inland Ridgeway, go straight on to the metal gate. After ¼ mile, you will see a Trig point on your left. At the left fork option, carry straight and at the next left sign, turn left. You will now have some derelict buildings in the field to your right and tumuli to your left.

Follow the fence to the gate and carry on along the ridge. After 1/3 mile, you will find a telegraph pole in the right hedge. The path swings left, following the line of the telegraph poles which leads onto a track. Follow this to the bottom.

At the bottom, turn right through a gate and continue along the track to a gate with the stream to your left. After 100 metres you will come out onto the road on the opposite side of the small river where you started.

National Trust in Purbeck The National Trust is working with Purbeck communities and cycling groups to encourage cyclists to enjoy the countryside responsibly.

Cycling as a pastime has grown rapidly in recent years. A combination of easy access from Poole and Bournemouth and spectacular routes to ride have meanwhile made Purbeck a prime destination for both on and off-road cyclists.

As a charity promoting enjoyment of special places we welcome this, but we recognise that rising numbers and changes in technology – in particular the use of powerful lights to extend off-road cycling into the hours of darkness – have led to some communities feeling under pressure.

That’s why we are asking Purbeck communities to help us draw up plans to manage cycling on National Trust land in Purbeck.

We’ve already asked Studland residents to identify particular areas of concern and now we want to hear from elsewhere in Purbeck.

Your feedback will allow us to draw up a map of ‘hot spots’ where conflicts arise and help us find the best ways of dealing with them.

Already some key issues have arisen, including cycling on footpaths where it is not allowed, speed and conduct of cyclists and a perceived lack of consultation when outside groups organise large scale cycling events in Purbeck.

We’ll be talking to cycling clubs and the media to encourage cyclists to know the law and ride responsibly. We’ll produce information for cyclists, improved signage at

hot spots and, in conjunction with Dorset County Council’s Rights of Way Officer, consider physical barriers where appropriate.

We’ll work to improve communication with event organisers using National Trust land and affected communities, and we’ll invite communities to help us improve the management of cycling in Purbeck into the future.

Talking about Wildlife...

Beside the seaside Dorset Wildlife Trust is very excited to take part in the Wildlife Trust’s annual celebration of our fantastic coast, with National Marine Week 2013.

Events are taking place all over the country, and this is a chance for anyone, of any age to get involved with what lies above, beneath and in Dorset’s iconic seas.

Our seashore detectives events on Tuesday 6th August (12.30-2pm) and Thursday 8th August (1.30-3pm) gives kids (and big kids!) the chance to search for signs of creatures from the deep along the seashore and use our amazing underwater camera to see sea creatures living in their natural habitat.

National Marine Week begins on the 27th July and there are lots of opportunities for you to experience the UK’s sea animals and plants for yourself. Many of us forget that beneath the waves there is a rich marine world, bursting with colour and life. Fish, lobsters, limpets and anemones all thrive in our local waters – and, in the summer months, dolphins hunt close to our shores.

If you’re crab-mad, and fancy a day with us at Kimmeridge, there will be an opportunity for families to attend the ‘Crafty Crabs’ event at 12.30 on Wednesday 7th August, where children can create crazy crustaceans. If you then want to learn about how to catch and care for crabs without harm to other rockpool animals, we will show you how – the eco-friendly way! Our ‘Ecofriendly Crabbing’ event starts in the afternoon, at 3pm.

Did you know that dolphins only rest half of their brain at a time whilst the other half stays alert and watches out for predators? For the chance to capture a glimpse of these majestic creatures, come and join us at Durlston Castle in Swanage on Sunday 28th July at 10.30am, as DWT takes part in the National Whale and Dolphin watch for just £3pp. We have teamed up with Durlston Country Park to learn, record and report information about dolphins. – Bring binoculars if you have them!

If you’ve ever wanted to see what’s beneath the surface whilst staying dry, our clear-bottomed Kayak Safari at Kimmeridge is for you.

Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of ‘Audi ultra’ lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80 kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level.

British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options – SE, Sport and S line all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the optional adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out.

On the move, the A3 Sport oil-burner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s more twisty roads like a limpet. There is plenty of room for you and your passenger in the front, although your friends in the rear seats might find it hard to stretch their legs out. That said, all the seats are supportive and the 2.0-litre 150 TDI lump allows you to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds.

GUIDE Runner Beans

It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost.

For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well.

Push a bean into a small pot of multipurpose compost and keep it moist.

Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a row of crossed

canes or even netting for them to grow up.

They can be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel - add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much.

Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set.

Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!
