He’s behind you!!! Oh yes he is!!

Yes, it was panto time again and Bournemouth Pavilion did itself proud once more. Twenty two of us joined the thirty two prize winners from Dorset and Purbeck Publications on the press night (making ourselves heard when announced towards the end!).

Aladdin, this year’s story, was superbly directed by Chris Jarvis, who also played Wishee Washee. The production had everything we love about panto... Jokes for the parents, fun for the kids and a great use of current chart hits adapted to fit the story.

Scott Maslen was the suitably evil, but quite sexy, Abanazar, trying his best to thwart Aladdin. Richard Vincent gave a stellar performance as Aladdin with outstanding vocals and high energy. Jamie-Lee Mason was the beautiful Princess Jasmine and she too gave stunning vocal performances.

There were great special effects with Aladdin flying all over the world on his magic carpet

Swanage Town Twinning Association

We are twinned with Rudesheim am Rhein in Germany and are always happy to welcome new members. On alternate years we visit Rudesheim or entertain members from Germany here in Swanage. This year it is our turn to visit Rudesheim.

We also have good social events through the year including a Barbecue with raffle and Tombola, a special fund raising event in October with music and song, also a “ Beetle Drive”.

Our monthly meetings are mostly held on the second Monday of the month at All Saints Hall at 7:30pm.

Bobby Crush gave a hilarious performance as Widow Twankey and even entertained us with his fantastic piano playing. Those of a certain age Scott Maslen as may remember him Abanazar winning Opportunity Knocks with this particular talent.

The whole cast gave outstanding performances to make the evening magical.

Pantomime really is the best way to get into the Christmas spirit. There was fun and laughter for all the family and I am looking forward to next year’s panto already!

Partnership success for Health Promoting Hospitals initiative This year the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was involved in the launch of a new initiative to improve the quality of care for patients with long-term conditions.

‘Health Promoting Hospitals’ is a partnership between the Trust and other key providers of health and social care, including Dorset Healthcare, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Dorset Police, BH Live and Carers UK, and reflects how health care in communities is changing. Hospitals no longer just treat and discharge patients, but are involved in providing education and advice so patients can understand and manage any long-term medical conditions throughout their lives.

A high number of hospital readmissions and health complications can be prevented if patients are empowered to self-manage their long-term conditions and if providers of health and social care are fully involved in the process.

The Trust is now part of the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals established by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Health promotion aims to improve the health of individuals and communities through education, behavioural change and environmental improvement.

Under the Health Promoting Hospitals scheme, the Trust provides a range of health advice which has not only had an impact on patients, but their families, staff, partner health providers and the wider community.

Activities included in the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative are: Community education programmes • Understanding Health events - these popular events are completely free to the public and give valuable insights into topics that may otherwise be difficult to understand.

• Health awareness seminars hosted in conjunction with other health care providers such as Carers UK, Stop Smoke and the British Heart Foundation.

• Health information available via the Trust website www.rbch.nhs.uk.

Patient health promotion programmes • Partnership with LV= Streetwise - the Trust has introduced a hospital ward scenario to the interactive safety centre, Streetwise, aimed at schoolchildren.

• Introduction of a new senior citizens tour at Streetwise - attendees take part in a two hour interactive session aimed at preventing slips, trips and falls.

• Move to Improve programme - patients from the Trust’s rheumatology and fibromyalgia clinics are directly referred into rehabilitation clinics for six week taster sessions offering techniques such as Tai Chi and relaxation classes.

The hospital ward scenario which forms part of the Streetwise interactive safety centre • Back Fitness Programme and Back Club - supporting patients with persistent back pain.

• Trust-led rehabilitation programmes offered at BH Live leisure facilities. The construction of musculoskeletal rehab centres based at the Littledown Centre and Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre are due for completion in spring 2014.

• Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre hosts pulmonary rehabilitation classes two times a week to provide support to people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and chronic lung disease.

It is not only patients and the public benefiting from the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative. Staff now have access to a variety of programmes including fitness classes, walking groups, healthy eating seminars and immunisation schemes.

Trust Chairman Jane Stichbury said: “Working with other providers of health and social care as part of this initiative is extremely positive. As a Trust it is vital that we provide high-quality care and support to our patients - working in collaboration with others also enables us to enhance the health of our local community.”

Talking about Wildlife...

New Year Resolutions for Wildlife It is traditional to begin the New Year with a set of resolutions to improve ourselves in one way or another. This year, if you feel like doing something a bit different, there are plenty of ways you can help improve wildlife, and wildlife can help improve you.

If you’re looking to get rid of the Christmas calories and get some fresh air, we have plenty of volunteering tasks on our reserves all around Dorset where you can get knee-deep in mud and up-close with nature! And below, we have listed some ways you can experience wildlife and help nature conservation in Dorset, which will bring you pleasure, comfort and satisfaction in 2014.

1. Treat yourself to a quiet walk at the weekend. The woods transform in the winter: pathways are covered in a thin layer of frost, which sparkles as the sun rises and sets; the trees stand firm like soldiers, bracing themselves against the biting winds; and their bare branches intertwine, forming wild, lopsided archways. This is truly a sight to behold.

2. If you have a family, spend three days a month in the local forest. Take a ‘Wildlife’ book, keep a record of what you find, and discover how the world changes.

3. Transform your garden into a haven for wildlife by setting up bird feeders, nest boxes, and log-piles.

The shelters you create will protect animals from the cold.

4. Clean out any existing bird boxes so that they are ready for the spring.

Top up bird feeders daily.

Don’t clear your garden too much this winter. Wild shrubs can be used by animals to shelter. Additionally, their seeds provide beneficial food for both animals and birds.

7. Sit back and enjoy the sculptural effect that wild seeds create.

8. Support local businesses and reduce your carbon footprint by regularly visiting farmers’ markets. These markets are abundant in fresh food, including meat, dairy produce, and locally grown fruit and vegetables.

9. Precycle rather than recycle; if you don’t need it, don’t buy it.

10. Ensure that litter is disposed of properly.

A Busy End to Year for Swanage Rotary Reflecting on the last three months of 2013, Rotary President Neil Hardy recalled, “we are normally busy before Christmas but last year was exceptional.”

Things started to get busy after the summer holidays when the Rotary Shoebox appeal was kicked-off by Sue Whitton. “It’s a really simple concept but so effective,” said Sue. “We ask people to fill a shoebox with things for a boy or a girl in the age range of 1 to 16. These are then wrapped, combined with other boxes from Rotary Clubs across the south and sent to children in Eastern Europe.” Over 200 boxes were sent from Swanage this year, the majority being filled by pupils in schools in the area. “When you consider this is the only present many of the children will get it’s a great reminder about the true spirit of Christmas,” said Sue. Things really stepped up as plans for Children in Need started to take place.

“We had previously worked with the Football Club on CiN,” said Bob Foster. “However, after the success of the Diamond Jubilee there was a real desire to do something that brought the community together.”

When the BBC contacted Bob to discuss using Swanage as part of their CiN coverage the Swanage Challenge was born. “It was amazing

to see it grow,” said Bob. “Once the theme of ‘Be a Hero’ was chosen by the BBC the Challenges began to emerge and it really took off.” As far Swanage was concerned the event culminated on the 2nd and 3rd November with 2 days of challenges which were covered on BBC’s South Today. The amazing sum of £10,000 was raised and presented live during the Children in Need program.

“Raising the money was great,” said Bob, “but what was really good was to see the way the community came together again for a great series of events that really showcased our town and the people in it.”

Whilst work was still going on with Children in Need, news was coming in about a typhoon that had hit the Philippines. International Chairman David Chalcraft remembered: “it was obvious from the initial coverage the devastation was widespread and they were going to need help.”

As international aid efforts started, the Rotary organisation in the Philippines appealed for help with shelter. “Having people on the ground enabled us to prioritise and quickly decide to raise money for Shelterboxes,” said David.

“They are such a practical solution and as a Rotary Partner Charity we know they will get to where they are needed.”

A street collection was organised where many people and organisations helped. Swanage Carnival donated £1000 and the appeal was closed after a collection was made at the Christmas Market. “We were able to send £6,490 – the equivalent of 11 Shelterboxes to the Philippines,” said David. “We appreciate times are tough at the moment but the generosity of the people in our community is amazing.”

Santa on his Rotary sleigh is a familiar sight around Swanage in December and this year was no exception. Good weather enabled us to visit all parts of the town and collect money for Rotary Charities which this year includes the Swanage Lifeboat Boathouse Appeal. Santa also found time to visit the Christmas market to ensure everyone had a chance to make any last minute requests. Doug Quayle, who organises Santa’s schedule, says it’s one of his highlights of the year.

“To see the children’s faces when Santa speaks to them is magical,” said Doug. “Rotary has been doing this for over 40 years now and a lot of parents remember when they stayed up to see Santa as children.”

The Swanage Christmas Market was held in early December when Station Road and Institute Road were transformed into a street market for the day. David Pike has been part of the Switch On Swanage team for many years and was pleased it happened at all. “After last year’s event there was no one willing to take on the

organisation of the Christmas Market and there was a real chance it would not happen,” said David. “Rotary decided to take on the role for this year and with some help from many different people and organisations the market went ahead.”

Blessed with good weather a great time was had by all and as well as showcasing local goods and produce, a great deal of money was raised for good causes. Nearly £1,000 was raised for Switch on Swanage which will be used to maintain/improve the lights in future year. “It’s such a great event I hope we will be able to keep it going next year.”

The final event of the year is the Rotary Christmas Breakfast, held on Christmas Morning for people who might otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. “We invite anyone to the URC Hall where a team of helpers provide a ‘full English’ for everyone,” said Mo Andrews who coordinated the event.

“Corbens are kind enough to send the invitations and local businesses donate the food. Rotarians cook and serve breakfast and arrange transport for anyone who needs it. It’s a really happy day, we sing carols and Santa finds time to give everyone a gift,” said Mo. “So it’s been a busy time,” says President Neil Hardy, ”but Rotary is all about communities and fellowship so better to be busy and make a contribution.”

Beginners guide to bird watching at Arne BUDDING BIRDWATCHERS should keep their eyes out for a new course starting this month The RSPB nature reserve at Arne is running a beginners guide to bird watching course which will take place over 3 consecutive Thursdays Starting on January 16 and is free and open to everyone.

Information Officer Michael Wilson said; ‘The start of the new year is a great opportunity to try something a bit different. If you don’t know your blackbird from your dunnock or your chaffinch from your great tit then this is the course for you!’

‘The course is aimed at the true novice and will contain essential tips to get you started, from using binoculars and ID books to learning more about watching birds in the many different habitats of Arne.’

‘The sessions aren’t about turning people in to overnight twitchers; they’re about helping people to find out something about the wildlife all around them.

Above all we want people to come out and enjoy themselves at this fantastic reserve’

Information Assistant Laura Popely said; ‘We have had great success with similar courses taking place in Weymouth and Upton in previous years, and Arne is a great place to do the same. I’m really looking forward to taking people round and teaching them something new. It’s also a brilliant chance for people to up their ID skills before the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of January.’

The first session will take place at Arne on January 16, continuing on January 23 and finishing on January 30. Sessions start at 10am and finish at 12pm.
