Sleeping Beauty in Bournemouth!

The story begins at Princess Rose’s christening, which is rudely and hilariously interrupted by the evil, yet lovable, witch Carabosse, splendidly played by Su Pollard.

Skip forward 17 years and we meet the princess on the eve of her 18th Birthday, and of course her Prince Charming, Prince Asa of Benidorm. I’m sure I wasn’t alone when I thought that the Princess was one lucky girl, aside from the whole curse thing of course.

The traditional ‘panto’ sense of humour was ever present, and cleverly worded to have children and adults alike roaring with laughter. The audience were also singing along and thoroughly enjoying the starstudded interactive entertainment laid out before them.

The show was scattered with performances featuring modern tunes, adapted to illustrate this age old tale perfectly, and of course to get the audience boogying; the musical numbers were brilliantly orchestrated. The local dancers were absolutely superb, with a range of ages but consistently fabulous talent. And on a school night!

We were relieved to see that Colin Baker made it back from the jungle in one piece as he was perfectly cast as the wonderful Nanny Nelly. In her wig and brightly coloured mismatched clothes, she never failed to animate the audience as she tried her best to keep the other characters in check. In particular Happy Harry, played by Chris

Jarvis, who had a tendency to take anything Nanny Nelly said quite literally, with hilarious consequences.

I would suggest that you do not sit in the front if you are adverse to a water pistol or two, but that is arguably the best seat in the house for catching sweets. Tough choice.

A massive acknowledgement is owed to Happy Harry (played by CBeebie’s Chris Jarvis) for not only performing magnificently, but also writing and directing the whole show. It was incredible to not only watch, but to get involved in. Highly recommended!

Happy New Year to all in Swanage!

Well we had a fantastic Christmas with my family up in Hull. There is nothing like 22 northern family members getting together. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t quite get the time off as I wanted and spent quite a lot of it in the kitchen! No rest for the wicked I realised, smiling… Hayden was thrilled with all his presents. On Christmas Eve I said in a rather hopeful way, “8am tomorrow Hayden”, to w hi c h he r e pl i e d “ Ok Mummy . ” T o my astonishment he woke up at 7.49am and whispered “It’s Christmas Day Mummy!” I replied “Oh Yes!” and then Hayden got back into his airbed on the floor… I was speechless. A few minutes later at 7.54 he whispered “Just 6 minutes to go Mummy!” I smiled. Then at 7.58 he suggested, “If we go downstairs now Mummy it will be 8am by the time we get there.” This really touched me. We are very lucky.

It is back to some normality now after our New Year’s celebrations. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? I have made some and I think the key is to plan them out and set small goals, one at a time. That way I think I can achieve them. Good luck with yours! Homes for nesting birds As we enter the midst of winter, it’s time to clear out the nest boxes in our gardens. Nest boxes provide sites in which birds can roost and are particularly important during the breeding season. Some birds will begin t o fight o ver space as early as February.

The nest boxes in your garden must be clean to protect birds from pests and disease. Unfortunately, old nests are infested with fleas, feather mites and parasites, which remain in nest boxes throughout the winter months.

In order to clear your nest boxes of these parasites, remove the old nests and debris. Next, cover the nest box in boiling water. Allow the house to dry completely before closing the lid.

Do not use chemicals or insecticides as these can be harmful to birds.

As you clean your nest box, you may come across unhatched eggs. It is legal to remove these from the nest between August and January and they should be disposed of to leave the nest clean for the next breeding season.

Before you return the nest box to its location, check for hazards such as

loose hinges, nails and splinters. You can fill the bottom of your clean nest box with wood shavings and birds may choose to roost there over winter, but there is no need to put anything inside. Do not inspect nest boxes when they are in use. Ensure your garden is equipped with the appropriate food, water and nesting material, which can include dog hair a n d t he co nt ent s o f y o u r o wn hairbrush! Happy bird watching!

Kingston to Houns Tout Walk Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?

Corfe Castle 3½ miles Easy No

A flat walk which takes you to the top of Chapman’s Pool with views across to St Aldh elm ’s/ St A lban’ s H ead. It has extensive views to both East and West.

How to get there: Grid Reference; 954795. Turn right for Kingston just after Corfe Castle. Follow the winding road up towards the top until you reach the Scott Arms on your right.

Turn right carefully at the 90 degree left hand bend and follow the road for about ¼ mile and park in the Houns Tout car park on the left.

Walk details:There is a small exit at the opposite end of the car park. Go through there and turn right along the track and follow the signs for Houns Tout. After about 1/3 mile you will go over a stile and into a field which will lead you to Houns Tout.

On the right will be the ‘Encombe Bowl’, in which is Encombe House and lake.

Beyond the bowl you will see Swyre Head, the highest point on the Isle of Purbeck..

At Houns Tout, you will have great views to both sides with Chapman’s Pool to your left. At this point you can return to Kingston on the same path, or you can descend the steep steps into Chapman’s Pool, turn left and follow the tarmac road back to Kingston if you wish.
