Dear Swanage, Wow! What fantastic weather we have had this year, except of course the flash flooding in some areas. It certainly was GREAT for the Swanage Carnival Week. We took the photo on the front with the planes circling overhead. Don’t we just love living in this part of the country! We have a full summer issue of The Swanage Oracle for you. Swanage Jazz Festival
25 years
It was the 25th year of the Swanage Jazz Festival. The town was packed and there was music playing at various venues throughout the town as well as marquees on Sandpit Field. We had a great Gospel Service in support of Julia’s House at The Methodist Church on Sunday morning which the mayor attended and Pauline Pearce from Hackney sang while accompanied by the Dave Brennan Jubilee Band. Pauline originally from Barbados became famous after confronting rioters in east London and trying to bring help and peace to the area. The Mayor and Mr Trite also attended the colourful fun parade down the seafront and along to the Stone Quay. There was lots of different types of Jazz to listen to and special Limited Edition 25th anniversary mugs in 18 different designs featuring photographs from last years event. Improving the way we care for older people Services for older people are being transformed at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital through a combination of staff engagement, strengthened leadership and redesigning how we care for older people. More importantly, it’s the result of patient and carer feedback. We have also been working with Professor David Oliver who is PresidentElect of the British Geriatrics Society. Here are some of the ways we are improving the hospital experience for our older patients: Improving care for patients with dementia Ward 26 has been renovated to improve the environment and quality of care for patients who have dementia. The bays, reception area and facilities have received design changes that make wards less confusing for those with dementia. A communal area has been created with comfortable chairs and a screen showing appropriate images, giving patients the opportunity to socialise. Each bay has a flower theme with distinctive images on the entrance doors, helping to orientate patients back to their own bay and bed.
r developing a compassionate care training programme to improve the staff culture and patient experience. r an older persons’ nurse practitioner is working on ward 3 to support the needs of older people. The ethos of the ward is to provide ongoing transitional care and rehabilitation for medically stable patients, while waiting for intensive support from social and community health services, to support a timely discharge. r JNplemented a specialist training programme to strengthen the skills of our doctors, nurses and therapy workers to manage older people’s needs. We have also: r recruited rehabilitation healthcare assistants to provide interim care in patients’ own homes while they are awaiting long term packages of care. r developed ambulatory (day care or outpatient) care clinics for older people providing rapid access to consultant geriatricians, therapists and nurses. The clinics provide an alternative to being admitted to hospital. r introduced the Quality Mark for Elder Friendly Hospital Wards on all older people wards and the stroke unit, to ensure a continuous focus on the care provided to older people. This is our commitment to achieve high quality of care for all older people. Andrew Williams, Consultant Geriatrician, said “I am extremely proud of the improvements made over recent months. We are beginning to develop services that can be compared against national best practice. I am excited about the future as we aspire to become a centre of excellence for older people’s health care.”

We now have a short stay admissions ward. Patients are supported by designated social workers, discharge planning key workers and experienced therapists. This has been developed through a range of patient feedback forums and strong leadership - critical to providing safe, compassionate care. Celebrate marine wildlife! The world’s oceans cover approximately 70% of the planet’s surface, supporting an amazing array of life, with thousands of different species and habitats. The British coastline is also rich and colourful with habitats from rocky shores to sea grass meadows, teeming with valuable fish stock and species such as basking sharks, dolphins, grey seals and puffins. Here in Dorset we have a spectacular range of marine species; Poole Bay is the home to the rare Couch’s goby, Chesil Beach is inhabited by one of our most glamorous soft-corals, the pink sea fan, and South Dorset hosts an area of mixed seabed habitat, to mention but a few.
Diversity of life is one of the most valuable and fascinating things about the marine environment. Unfortunately, marine wildlife all over the world has come under constant pressure – mainly due to human activities. Overfishing and marine litter are amongst the biggest threats, and it is estimated that 100,000 marine mammals

and turtles and one million seabirds are killed every year by litter. It is therefore vital that everyone do their part to help safeguard our coastal environment and the marine ecosystems. Small steps such as making sure that household waste and plastic are properly disposed of or recycled, never using the toilet as a bin, and by reducing unnecessary packaging all go a long way. Seashore is a wonderful place to explore at any time, and to celebrate UK’s marine wildlife the Wildlife Trusts are organising the annual National Marine Week, which this year runs from Saturday July 26 to Sunday August 10. Dorset Wildlife Trust is providing a range activities, including dolphin watching, The Big Wild Chesil Event for the whole family, rock pooling and an exhibition on marine giants. Turn left and proceed along the road until you turn left into Ship Knapp and back to your car.
How to get there: Grid Reference 399939. At the west end of Morcombelake, there is a turning to the south called Ship Knapp. Turn into this lane and park on the left after about 100 metres, near the Ä UNLY ZPNU [V .VSKLU *HW Information: No toilets available. Walk details: -VSSV^ [OL Ä UNLY ZPNU [V^HYKZ .VSKLU *HW This will lead you on a level path and track along the base of the small ridgeway to your right and will bring you out at a crossroads with a farm lane (3/4 mile). In the Raw.. Ingredients 250g cacao butter, shaved with a knife 150g cacao powder 125g dry sweetener, such as xylitol, coconut sugar or raw cane sugar powdered in your Vitamix or a spice mill/coffee grinder
DARK CHOCOLATE Method
Healthy and fun with a bit of patience chucked in the bowl...
Place margarine, syrup and sugar in a bowl and mix together. In a medium mixing bowl, in this order, add butter and then cacao butter and powdered sweetener. Bring 250ml water to a boil in a saucepan, reduce heat to low-medium and put the bowl of ingredients on top to melt down. Don’t stir the mix until you start to see some cracks in the surface of the powers or a little pool of butter in the bottom of the bowl. If you have a vita mix, then you will just melt the ingredients about 40%, take the bowl off the pot and wipe the bottom of the bowl so no water drips into your chocolate when pouring into the blender jug. Put the lid on the jug and turn on low speed and then onto high for about 5 seconds. Take the temperature (get yourself a probe thermometer off Amazon) to be sure you are not exceeding 42°c. The object here is to heat and smooth the mixture out, so you don’t want any lumps left by the time you reach 42°c. If you have a normal blender or no blender at all, then you will want to sift your powders before starting and heat the ingredients to 42°c over the double boiler. Once you have reached 42°c it’s time to temper the chocolate. If you’re using the Vitamix, transfer the chocolate to a clean, dry bowl. If using the double boiler method, wipe the bottom of the bowl and pour the mix into a new, clean, dry bowl; the residual heat from the bowl will continue to heat the chocolate otherwise. Using a flexible spatula, gently keep the chocolate moving and scrape the sides of the bowl every 30 seconds - 1 minute. That’s it, you are now in the process of tempering chocolate. Once the chocolate has reached 31.5°c or lower, you can now cast it in a mould or just pour it into a clean, dry plastic container. Tempered chocolate contracts when it sets, so it will easily come out of any mould you cast it in. Pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to set. I would suggest that you not add anything to this batch of chocolate, just leave it plain so you can get the full tempered chocolate experience. Also, if for some reason it doesn’t temper, you can try again or troubleshoot. That’s all. It may seem a little much right now, but you will get the hang of it in no time. If you make a mistake, don’t stress, it’s just chocolate. Don’t look at is as “expensive ingredients going to waste” look at it as a learning experience, a fun hobby, something that makes you happy and therefore nothing else matters! Please note, I suggest that, if you are using moulds to set your chocolate, you start with silicone, as they are easiest to use when you are learning.

If I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5. You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens. Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black. The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive. The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-highstrength steels; they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds. Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs
effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too. The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses. I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road. It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees. And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm. This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Nellie has friends! Well I am nearly 50 years old…sshh, that is not for public knowledge so please keep it to yourself… and I have a 10 year old, active son. He loves cycling and has most definitely outgrown his last bike that we bought him a few years ago (Why do they grow so fast!). We had one of those family meetings where it was decided that a new bike each would be great to take with Nellie on our trips out. That way we could drive to the countryside or the seaside and cycle where Nellie was just too big to go. I used to cycle quite a bit in my younger days, so I was ok with the idea, though a little apprehensive. The things you do for your children… All three of us went into Motabitz in Ferndown and I instantly saw the bike I wanted… you know one of those lovely new, retro looking, relaxing style bikes with a beautiful basket on the front. That was the one for me, no doubt, totally certain and I knew I would love riding it. I didn’t say this at the time, but I knew

Steve was a little more uncertain, so the chap who was serving that day suggested we went to their bigger store in Boscombe and see more of the bikes on display there. Off we went. Fortunately Karl, who was working at the store that day, gave me some great advice. Not having ridden for, well a few years now (since I was last at High School, so at least 5 years…), I was totally unfamiliar with all the different types of bikes. Karl asked where we would be riding. I confidently told him, off road, bridle paths, walkways etc, standing there smiling. He smiled back. He looked at me, looked at my ideal, perfect bike and said, “You will feel every bump on that bike.” That wiped the confident smile off my face! I actually really appreciated all of Karl’s knowledge. I needed it. When you don’t know something and are about to spend money that could be totally
23 wasted and the whole family plans in ruins, due to lack of data, you really do want the advice of an expert. I also wanted to be able to walk after riding, and be able to sit in a chair… Karl was an expert and really willing to spend the time with us to ensure that we did get what we not only wanted, but what was best for our needs and what we would get the best use out of, as well as fun. In fact all the staff at Motabitz are really friendly and helpful. They do pride themselves on good service and are not just a shop to go and buy things for the bike and car from. They provide an excellent bike service and give this for free in the first 6 months of the new bike’s life. Excellent! So… after a little more debate and me tearing myself away from the ‘old fashioned/fashionable’ bike I so desired, I saw another I really liked. A good mountain bike, which was shining pink and white. “That’s it!” I declared. Again Karl caringly said, “Ok, let’s try it and see if you like it.” I went outside and rode around the car park at the back, just to see if I really could manage her. Hayden followed on his bright, yellow Megabyte, grinning from ear to ear the whole time. He loves cycling! We were

Rosie and Mega’s first adventure! both very happy. Stephen found a bike too, a similar ‘male version’ of the one I picked, in red and black. The bikes were all thoroughly checked and a few days later we went, very excitedly, to pick them all up. Saddles were adjusted for all of us and we were kitted out with helmets and gloves. I even got a basket for the front, which I did insist on, much to the fun of Mike who was serving us this time. He asked if it was for a dog, and I told him it was just for my handbag… Women, hey. So we are now the proud owners of Rosie, Rockie and Mega who join Nellie on our outings! We have lots planned and are now busy looking at maps with not only campsites but with cycles paths as well. Where we live is ideal as we can cycle all the way to Moors Valley through the plantation, though Nellie may feel left out, so we will have to watch that. Thank you Motabitz, you all did a great job! You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the seeds and grow your own

Try it with plants with quite large seeds to start with, like Marigolds or try Aquilega (Grandmother’s Bonnets) or Foxgloves.
They may not grow exactly the same in character and quality as the original plants but it’s great fun to watch the results of your efforts spring into life.

National Trust in Purbeck Studland residents and beach hut owners have been receiving their own tailor-made guide to coastal change, thanks to the LiCCo (Living with a Changing Coast) project and the Dorset Coast Forum. The free colour booklet, The Residents’ Guide to Coastal Change in Studland, was produced in response to questions asked by those who responded to a survey. Among the issues raised were: • Evidence for sea level rise, • How the sand moves around Studland, • How coastal change will affect the cliffs around Old Harry, • Plans for maintaining facilities if the existing ones are lost, • Why there are no plans to recharge Studland Beach as happens on resort beaches like Bournemouth and Swanage. These and other questions have been answered by experts from Dorset Coast Forum members including the Environment Agency, National Trust, councils and universities. “The idea was we would take the questions which were most popular and go away and find the people who were most appropriate to answer them,” said Elli MacDonald of the LiCCo project. The booklet is this month being distributed to every household and beach hut owner in Studland. The LiCCo project, backed by partners including the Environment Agency and the National Trust, is designed to help seaside communities understand coastal change and play a part in making plans for the future. Time Team fans can watch a real life dig unfold at Corfe Castle as part of the Festival of Archaeology this month.

National Trust archaeologists and volunteers will be investigating parts of the castle which have recently been exposed by erosion. Visitors are welcome to chat to the experts as they work, and to ask questions. Part of the project will focus on the Inner Ward, at the top of the castle, where a length of medieval wall beside a well has been uncovered. At the same time, a geophysical survey backed up by two small trenches in the West Bailey will investigate the foundations of another wall before work is carried out to protect it from further erosion. The archaeology is important because there are only limited surviving records of how Corfe Castle looked before it was partially demolished by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. The results of the investigations will help experts decide the best ways of protecting the two areas in the future. The dig is due to take place between Monday July 21 and Friday July 25. The Festival of Archaeology itself runs from Saturday July 12 to Sunday July 27, featuring a family trail, living history displays and handson activities. An overflow area has been created at Spyway car park in Lanton Matravers in response to concerns over crowding. An area of the neighbouring field has now been set aside for parking, initially for a 28day period. The National Trust has meanwhile applied for planning permission to make the arrangement permanent between May and September annually. Jon Bish, Communications Officer
