I had a great Mothering Sunday, very relaxing and just what I needed. With busy lives as we lead, it is important to have some time for ourselves. We are in fact going to the Isle of Wight for Easter with my parents to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This time we are staying in a large house on the cliff top. We are really looking forward to it and I know Mum and Dad can’t wait! Here’s to some family time. Well here in the April issue of The Swanage Oracle we have many local trades people and some shops who would love to help you. Why not have artificial grass laid to cover up that unkempt lawn? National Trust in Purbeck The National Trust is continuing to work with others to reduce the visual impact of the Navitus Bay wind farm proposed off the Dorset coast. Ian Wilson, the trust’s Assistant Director in the South West, last month gave a qualified welcome to an announcement the planned development would be scaled back. Navitus Bay Development Ltd said it would remove the ‘top triangle’ of the wind farm, effectively moving it up to 2.4 miles further out to sea when viewed from some locations. The distance from Swanage to the nearest turbines would remain unchanged at just over nine miles, but Navitus says the spread of turbines visible on the horizon would be “considerably reduced” and there would now be a “clear gap” between the development and the southern coast of the Isle of Wight. “We welcome the reduction in scale of the proposed wind park but would like to see more done to reduce the impact of the wind farm,” said Ian. “We believe that offshore wind should make an important contribution to the country’s renewable energy targets, but it has to be in the right place at the right scale. “We cannot support proposals that would seriously damage the beauty of the coastline we look after on behalf of the nation.” “The trust remains committed to working with all interested parties to make this development the best that it can be, and to find the best balance between the overall impact on the environment and landscape, and the need to generate clean and affordable energy.”

The clean-up operation in the immediate aftermath of the storms which battered Studland Beach in February was virtually complete at the time of writing. Attention is now turning to longer term plans to ensure a future for beachfront facilities and businesses after exceptional winter weather caused years of erosion in just weeks. Meanwhile, there are encouraging signs that some of the sand washed out into the bay is beginning to be deposited back on the beach. The removal of sand revealed objects which had long lain hidden, including an old beach restoration sign, thought to be between 15 to 20 years old, and metal fencing coils and pipes left over from World War Two. Dealing with trees uprooted when parts of the dunes were washed away was the main focus in the days following the storms. Rangers set to work to remove fallen trees and ensure the beach was safe for visitors, said Senior Beach Ranger Stewart Rainbird. At the time of writing there were early signs of areas of beach beginning to grow again due to natural processes, he added. But higher than normal tides were expected in March, and some work had been put on hold to see how they would affect the gradual re-alignment of the beach. Meanwhile, a civil engineer’s report is being prepared and its recommendations will be studied closely. The two main areas of focus will be the landslip which has undermined the steps and access at Middle Beach, and erosion close to the café and shop at Knoll Beach. Jon Bish, Communications Officer

Assessing and meeting patients’ needs Assessing the needs of our patients ensures that they receive the right individual care, support and treatment that they need. This includes everything from an initial assessment when they first come in to hospital to continual assessments throughout their whole hospital stay. We have made a number of improvements in assessing and meeting the needs of our patients. Extended visiting We have extended the visiting times on our wards to benefit patients, families, friends and carers. We wanted to make visiting times less restrictive for those who may have previously been unable to see a friend or loved one. The extended times (varying on wards from 1.307.30pm or 2-8pm) mean patients, visitors and carers have more opportunities to liaise with doctors, nurses and therapists about their care. Families and carers are also able to assist patients at meal times if they wish to, with support from hospital staff. Protected mealtimes, aimed at ensuring patients can eat without being interrupted, still apply on hospital wards. Visitors are politely requested to respect this time unless they are supporting feeding. Alison Pressage, Senior Nurse for the Elderly Care Directorate, said: “Patients may not always understand what their treatment entails, but having someone they know on hand to offer help and encouragement will no doubt aid their recovery and improve their morale, and ensure relevant family members are involved appropriately in the recovery plans.” New plated meal service for patients Patients on our wards are now able to choose what they would like to eat just 90 minutes before it is served without the risk of their food of choice running out. Instead of food being served from catering trolleys on the wards, meals are now pre-plated in the hospital kitchens and stored in heated units before being delivered. Ellen Bull, Deputy Director of Nursing at the hospital Trust, said mealtimes are a vital part of a patient’s recovery: “Trials with the new plated meal service were well received, and we are hoping that patients will review this improvement positively, ensuring meals provided are hotter and more timely.” We have also expanded the number of volunteer meal time assistants who support our patients. Bay nursing improves patient communication Bay-based nursing stations have been introduced on all of our medical and care of the elderly wards at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital providing a greater nurse presence and reducing patient anxiety.

Bay nursing improves patient communication A nurse is allocated to each bay on the ward at the start of each shift. That nurse is responsible for the delivery of care to those patients (up to seven patients and supported by a health care assistant) for the duration of their shift. The nursing stations are stocked with materials based on the acuity and needs of the patients on that bay. This leads to more effective nursing by ensuring they have the right equipment to hand. The nurse becomes the expert on those patients in that bay and is able to support doctors’ ward rounds. They can provide more proactive, consistent and timely individual care and improved communication between staff, carers and families. Staff nurse, Bridget Bush from Ward 17, said: “It has improved communication between staff and patients and is more efficient. I love it. It is simple but effective and has made such a difference.” Did you know? • Emergency patients being admitted to our Acute Medical Unit are now seeing a consultant physician within an average of five hours of their arrival, compared to 12 hours a year ago. The improvement in times is down to extending the week day working hours of consultants by a further three hours so they can continue to visit patients up to 10pm. This means more patients are seen and assessed earlier allowing staff to prioritise treatment. • Preventing hospital acquired pressure ulcers is essential for the safety of our patients. we have launched a new prevention and management programme for all of our wards. Pressure Area Care Together (PACT) includes guidance for staff, monthly updates on the number of incidents as well as success stories, new initiatives and any training opportunities. We are providing additional wound care and pressure ulcer prevention training for ward staff and ward sisters are carrying out twice.

Talking about Wildlife...
Summer bird visitors Britain’s long coastline and mild summers make it an internationally important destination for the thousands of migrant birds making their journey from Africa to raise their young here in the summertime. Many of the migrants are insectivores, and the northern latitudes provide a better chance of finding food, with less competition and longer days.
You don’t need to be an expert bird watcher to enjoy the spectacle of spring migration, and Dorset offers many opportunities to observe the new arrivals. Brownsea Island, situated in Poole Harbour, with its diverse geography of woodland, saltmarsh, heathland and reed beds is a haven for wildlife all year round. In the summer, hundreds of nesting common and sandwich terns populate the sheltered lagoon. They are a family of small to medium sized birds that feed on fish and insects, making dramatic dives into the water to catch their prey. The migrant terns make their way to Brownsea Island in April and May, in order to nest and raise their young families within a short season, and return to their wintering grounds in August and September. They nest in colonies and produce one annual brood only, often extremely vulnerable to predators such as crows and gulls. Being able to breed in the safety of the nature reserve is often vital to the survival of the young terns.

Brownsea Island, which is owned by the National Trust, will open to the public daily from end of March, Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. In the meantime, or if you prefer to enjoy the nesting birds from the comfort of your own home, Dorset Wildlife Trust, along with Birds of Poole Harbour and National Trust manages a webcam on the Brownsea Island Lagoon. Sat 26th April at 7:30pm Simon Lole will be conducting over 250 singers from all over Dorset with the Dorset County Orchestra On Saturday 26th April singers from Swanage and Wareham will come together under the umbrella of the Dorset Guild of Singers with choir members from all over Dorset to sing Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Wessex Hall, Lighthouse, Poole. The massed choir of over 250 will be accompanied by the Dorset County Orchestra and conducted by Simon Lole. Elijah was ďŹ rst performed, conducted by the composer himself, in 1846 at City Hall Birmingham and was greeted with deafening, enthusiastic applause. A year later Mendelssohn was dead, exhausted by too many performances but leaving behind a work that became a major catalyst in the growth of choral societies.

The Promise
“As soon as I saw the devastation that has hit the Philippines, my business became of secondary importance. I spent my childhood in Eastern Samar which was one of the worst affected areas and the first point at which Typhoon Haiyan hit landfall.” This gave Summer and Michael the desire to physically get involved. Words cannot describe the generosity and support of the local Swanage people. With a generous amount of help from very kind donations totalling £2500, this aspiration was suddenly to become a reality. So a great adventure began…… “From my mother’s home province of Laguna, south of the capital Manila we hired a van and set off on the 3 day drive Eastern Samar and Leyte. Our first destination was a school supplies company in the province of Naga a 12 hour drive away. We spent 7 hours negotiating and selecting the supplies that each school year would need. It consisted of pens, pencils, writing books, quiz note books, rulers, art materials and much more. It took us over and hour to load what must have been over 500kg of paper and supplies. The poor van felt very different to drive.” After 3 days of very challenging island to island travel and driving dirt roads Summer & Michael eventually reached her old primary school. Children and their teachers were in the middle of a lesson being taken in a roofless building near the devastated epicentre of the disaster area when a former pupil of the school walked in unannounced. “The school teacher entertained me and learned about their urgent needs. I then went outside and returned with Michael who is ladened with large plastic folders full of school stationary and learning materials, one for every child.”

Summer remembers the look on their faces and added, “There were tears of disbelief and joy that people from so far away should care so much.” It isn’t long before the nearby school hear about this mission and by the 6th day of buying and distributing school materials, four elementary schools and over 2000 children have received the plastic folders containing basic school supplies as well as an array of sports equipment. The staff also received teaching materials to replace some of things that the typhoon washed away. Summer and Michael’s commitment has been astounding and inspirational; not only providing each child with their own learning pack, but helping the local economy by sourcing everything within the Philippines. They also donated £100 to help pay for a school to clear inches of mud. “The £100 could only pay for 7 days of work; sadly it will take over 2 months to complete the work. Teachers have been paying for repairs and mud clearance out of their own pockets. No schools supplies or help had reached the schools before we arrived. We were the first

to bring the much needed schools supplies. Charities had done an amazing job supplying shelter and food but the poor schools had been completely forgotten. There was no electricity and not likely to be for another 3 months. Can you imagine coping with no electricity for 5 months?!” “Children are taught in wet, wind swept classes. Mud still covers many of the floors and walls. But amazingly the teachers and children carry on and even manage to laugh and smile. Their ability to carry on under such circumstances is just beyond belief.” Michael has expressed, “After seeing the utter devastation we were surprised that of vast contributions to aid relief there appears to be no help as far as education was concerned. We saw thousands of trucks delivering aid in the form of food, water and building materials and many charities and organizations are doing great work but the schools seem to be forgotten.” Michael also added, “It was very sad to be told by teachers that the department of education had issued a cheque for £400 per school but they were not allowed to cash the cheque until given permission. No permission arrived when we left, leaving teachers to donate most of their salary towards rebuilding and clearing schools. Areas of electricity supply are rare and only in

the most accessible areas. Schools have nothing and are unlikely to get any for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine once you have had a personal face to face encounter with the reality of the situation, it can not leave you anything but deeply moved and determined to continue to help. It could take up to at least five years to put things back to normal and for some it will never be the same again. During that time millions of families will continue to struggle just to survive. The dignity of the people we met, school staff, children and families was truly humbling. Somehow despite the unbelievable chaos children were clean and tidy. We can leave them to cope as best as they can, while we lead unbelievably cosseted lives. We want to stand by these poor people, not just for a quick fix, but for the long haul ahead.” Summer and Michael in the coming months are committed to changing their business into a foundation to support the schools and children in need. “Being brought up in the Philippines and experiencing at least twenty typhoons a year, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore, but my last visit to the Philippines will remain as the toughest visual journey I have ever had to endure.” “My promise to these people, I shall return!” Summer & Michael Smith

Amazing opportunities to volunteer at four Dorset Arts Festivals Four of Dorset’s most popular summer festivals are looking for Volunteer Champions to lead a field survey force. Dorchester Festival (May 22-26), B-Town Throwdown (June 6-8), b-side (September 5-14) and Inside Out Dorset (September 12-26) are each looking to recruit dedicated and enthusiastic Volunteer Champions, who’ll assist with a concerted effort to find out who comes to their festivals and why. “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to help with some of Dorset’s most popular festival events and gain some valuable skills in the process. By finding out more about our audiences we can make future events even better” says Mark Tattersall, Artistic Director of Dorchester Festival. The 11th biennial Dorchester Festival is run by Dorchester Arts will once again bring a world of music, dance, theatre, comedy and community arts to the county town. B-Town Throwdown run by Pavilion Dance South West, is a three-day hip hop event in Bournemouth, packed full of performances, masterclasses and free outdoor events. Multi media arts festival b-side is back again with its distinctive brand of specially commissioned artworks for unusual and often overlooked sites and spaces. This year’s focus is the enchanting and sometimes mysterious Isle of Portland as artists invite the public to take another look at the familiar landscape.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Well I do laugh about Nellie, the Purbeck Publication’s Campervan and her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, but these machines really are something else! Nellie looked small and rather overshadowed by the imposing façade of these rather sinister, and very powerful looking vehicles. The Tank Museum at Bovington, is quite incredible! www.tankmuseum.org It was our first visit. Harry came with us, a good friend of Hayden’s and much to Hayden’s excitement. Off we went. Boys in the back playing on DS’s and then opening the game’s cupboard (strategically placed next to the back seat), and taking out the “not allowed to say yes or no” game. It was fun listening to them trying to catch each other out, laughing away, whilst we were driving along. As there is a table in front of the back seat it so much easier to play a game, even whilst driving. So we arrived at the Tank Museum around 11.30am on Saturday morning. It was pretty busy which was great. In fact we had picked a weekend when the army

barracks were having a “Family Weekend” and the fairly new recruits were showing all their relatives where they lived, what they did on training etc. We were even treated to a demonstration in full combat uniform and a fast moving tank later in the day. This was separate to the Tank Museum, but right there in the arena just in front of the museum building.
In front of the Mark IV WW1 tank The museum itself is enormous! There are so many tanks and displays we didn’t get to see all of them, so it is a good excuse to go back. One of the first things we did was walk through a mock up of the First World War trenches. It was realistic, dark and with sound effects that really gave you a feel for how hard life was for the soldiers. We then sat in a first World War Tank, the Mark IV. This is the only place on Earth that you can go into a First World War tank, so it is pretty special! The volunteer guide was brilliant and told us about the heat, 65 degrees plus, with red hot pistons sizzling. Where was health and safety in those days? The maximum
23 speed was a mere 4 miles an hour. It was difficult to imagine being stuck in one of those, whilst being fired at constantly.
In the driving seat of the Mark IV WW1 tank! We were then educated about life during the Second World War. We even sat in an air raid shelter with full sound effects of bombs dropping nearby. What an experience! Harry did look a little apprehensive at this point, and I can well understand. Again the guide was excellent, showing us gas masks of the time and painting the picture of a life then. If any students are doing projects on war and how life was, this would be ideal. The museum gives a very realistic experience that you cannot get from books alone. On that note, there is a display of a camp in Afghanistan and this I personally found extremely moving. Again it is realistic and you really do get the feeling of how life might be for the soldiers. There is also a board full of people’s signatures who have been to Afghanistan as well as some names of soldiers who have lost their lives and are no longer with us. This was hard hitting. Hayden and Harry made their own game, which I was impressed with. They ran around trying to find the heaviest and fastest tank on display. Boys being boys made it a competition to see who could

beat the other one and find it the first. The tank museum is such a sturdy, huge place, it was totally fine for them to go off and play this game. Don’t tell Harry’s parents but I did ‘lose’ them for a few minutes and did wonder how long it may take to find them amongst the masses of tanks on display. Fortunately they wanted some sweets, so finding me was of benefit to them… Actually both were extremely well behaved and I had no worries whatsoever. So the day was enlightening, educational, impressive and emotional all at the same time. All of the Tank Museum volunteers have a wealth of data to give you and there is much to see and experience. I recommend you go, if you haven’t already. It reminds us that life is for living… We did of course have our customary picnic in Nellie with a cuppa as you can see here.

Photographer of the Month! Our Photographer of the Month for April is June Elkins.
“During the early days of my life, I went into Nursing, covering all aspects. I then married and have two children, a Son and a Daughter, showering me with five beautiful Grandchildren. After the birth of my children I was diagnosed with Multiple Scelerosis, which kind of shook my life style for a while. After having done quite a lot of research into this disease, it prompted me to throw myself into ‘Charity Work’ raising monies for M.S. research. I used to organise sponsered walks around the lake in Poole Park each summer, with Celebrity starters to the walk, such as Michael Yarwood, Harry Secome, Ipi Tombi, etc. My late Uncle Harry was a photographer, and I aspired to him. When my children, had grown up, and flown the nest, I decided to purchase a very nice camera, and also joined Poole Camera Club.On entering a photography competition for Country Living Magazine, I was amazed to learn that I had won 2nd prize out of 3,000 entrants. My best friend is my Lumix FZ38, which I have recently downsized from my earlier, much heavier Canon camera. I particularly enjoy ‘Natural History’ which takes me out into the beautiful Purbeck Hills, and the New Forest, and also photgraphy in my favourite countries, Italy and the Greek Islands” June Elkins
