Dear St Leonards, St Ives, Ashley Heath & Avon Castle, We certainly have had a rather wet summer which is a shame. We always hope for sun and are well known across the globe for our conversations about the weather. It is so changeable after all! Nellie, The Dorset Publications travelling van, made the most of it for us and with our good old British attitude we did have plenty of fun. We hope you did too. For those of us with children and grandchildren it is ‘back to school’ for yet another year. Hayden has moved up to Upper School which is very exciting. We managed in all our activities over the summer to redecorate his bedroom and put in a new bed with a nice homework desk underneath, so no excuses now! Let’s see if that works. I am sure it will. Dare I say the nights will be pulling in soon and we will be wrapping up warmer and maybe even putting the fire and heating on. Now is the time to make sure all is in good working order, so do make those all-important calls to the experts who can check it out for you. There are many trades people who could help inside so please do use them. They love to hear from you and it makes all our hard work worthwhile. Dorset Trading Standards give the following advice to consumers:
Don’t deal with traders who knock on your door touting/offering their services. Even if it is for work you want doing. It’s better to find a trader you trust rather than someone who has just knocked on your door.
Display a “We do not deal with uninvited traders” sign on your door. (One is included for you to cut out and display)
If you need some work doing we recommend using a personal recommendation from a friend, family or neighbour. If this is not possible you can phone 03454 04 05 06 and obtain a trader from the Trading Standards Audited Buy With Confidence Scheme.
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that any work must be completed with due care and skill, completed within a reasonable time for a reasonable price and any products should be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.
If the contract is agreed while the trader is in your home they should give you clear information about themselves (i.e. their name, address and telephone number), the price or how it will be calculated and information on your cancellation rights (you should be allowed a 14 day cooling off period). Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife in Autumn Whilst most of us might be dreading the thought of the seasons changing, autumn can offer up some exciting wildlife spectacles and activity for us to observe and learn about. As the days start to get shorter, wildlife in our woods and gardens gets busy. Autumn is a time of bustling activity; preparation of food reserves and nestling for winter, and, for some, for hibernation. Many a nature lover’s favourite, the dormouse, generally hibernates from October to April, in a hidden nest on the ground. Whilst this tiny creature gains weight from 25 to 40 grams in preparation for its long period of inactivity, this is an extremely vulnerable time for the species and not all survive it. For bird watchers, autumn is a wondrous time: due to its temperate climate, Britain is an internationally important destination for many migrant birds. As summer favourites such as swallows, nightingales and house martins depart, fieldfares, geese and waders, along with many others, arrive in their huge flocks on our shores, creating fantastic aerial spectacles. Brownsea Island at Poole Harbour is ideal for bird watching, and has an added

bonus of a population of red squirrels which can be spotted busily scurrying around the island, storing away their winter nuts and seeds. Don’t forget to check the woodland floor, too, for colourful autumn fungi. Looking after your garden with wildlife in mind at this time of year is crucial, and the good news is, too much tidying up is not a good thing! Hedgehogs, toads and minibeasts all need safe winter quarters; a pile of wood, leaves and sticks in a secluded corner of your garden equals a five star hotel for many wintering species. Be mindful to check November bonfires before lighting, though, for hibernating hedgehogs. Finally, it is not only fauna that can be enjoyed in the autumn; flora will be in bloom as well - join our wild friends and enjoy the many fruits of hedgerow harvest from blackberries to crab apples. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s busiest time of year for practical conservation work starts in the Autumn and Winter. Heritage: 40 Acres For Sale In 1803, a 40 acre area bounded by the 1760s Ringwood to Poole turnpike and the “Roman Road” was one of three lots on offer. It was part of a pine plantation, already thinned out after ten years, now ready to be cropped at 20 years. Mid-19th century, resident at St. Ives House, Charles Castleman purchased this area, probably as an investment, but seems to have disposed of it relatively quickly. In 1882 a Ringwood Cottage Building Company had developed Bickerley Terrace to provide homes for workers. Turning their attention to St. Ives about 1886, their deedbox, accessed in 2007, provided plans showing the western half divided into one acre strips, about 50ft wide. They contracted to have some cottages built, detached and semi-detached, for leasing out. First to be completed, in 1886, were St. Ives Cottages, still there today next to St. Ives End Lane. Among several Agreements available
was one dated 1st July 1887 with a Robert Ferrett as the first tenant in the left hand cottage. Wesleyans took up a plot pre-1909, their chapel appearing on that OS map, but did not survive. Seen on the left in the first picture, it became the local authority school from 19191926. It was then used as a community hall, eventually a rented residence. Today some still refer to it as “The Old School House”. An adjacent footpath leads to School Lane, but that more likely refers to the private Brackenbrae School once on the corner with Sandy Lane. That school had begun in an old house of that name still there on the service road. In 1919 the Ringwood Company began auctioning its properties and plots. Bickerley Terrace was Lot 1, reserve price £1,750, sold in 1920 to Albert Baker for £1,500. His grandson, historian Ted Baker, inherited the deedbox. Lots 2 to 4 were cottages in

St. Ives, Lot 3 being an “experimental wood and tin” pair, on the left in the second picture, not replaced until the 1980s. Lots 5 to 7 were vacant plots. The company was voluntarily wound up in 1921. The eastern half of the area was taken up as “The Ringwood Estate” in the 1890s, divided into 43 half acre plots. Development began about 1897, the first property, “Jubilee Cottage”, a survivor recently extended. Many others with the distinctive white brick banding followed, four of them in the vicinity of Post Office Lane. The Post Office building has “1902” scribed into its chimney in the loft. About then, “red brick” cottages were also appearing on Sandy Lane as the original western plots were divided up. Remarkably almost all these late 19th and early 20th century properties survive. More can be found on Woolsbridge Road, known then as Gipsy Bottom. These were within what had been the Earl of Malmesbury’s “St. Leonards Estate”, plots auctioned off during 1894 and 1897. Sandy Lane had yet to link up, and William Webb did not start his Ashley Heath development until 1921. The original sparse nature of the area is notable for its lack of thatched cottages. Today’s “Beech Cottage”, here seen as “Blue
Cottage” within the St. Ives House Estate about 1910, is an almost unique example. Since WW2 the nature of these two halves of that original 40 acres has changed out of all recognition. Ashley Heath and other developments encroached from the north in the 1950s and 1960s, and “Racecourse Heath” to the west was taken over. Since then infill within St. Ives and elsewhere brought cul de sacs large and small that filled in the “backlands”. The 1972 First School and Strode Gardens took over from Pinewood Cottage. Now we see much “two for one” as even some of these postwar properties are replaced. The nearby SSSI across the A31 must surely be thanked for some of the historic survivors, at least along the service road. Making sites more accessible across Dorset and the South West The South West is full of wonderful heritage places to explore, from caves to historic houses and sweeping landscapes. According to the Papworth Trust, disabled adults in the North and South West report the highest number of life areas (education and leisure) where participation is restricted. Despite the efforts of museums, galleries and other leisure attractions, feedback from disabled and Deaf people suggests there is more that can be done to make these places more accessible. The Heritage Ability project, delivered by charity Living Options Devon and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund has a clear vision - to break down barriers at these heritage places, unlocking the South West for everybody to enjoy. Over the next three years, the Heritage Ability team will support a variety of unique places across the South West to help them improve the experience for disabled and Deaf visitors. From the West tip of Cornwall all the way to Gloucestershire, the team will work with over 19 sites to deliver accessible interpretation, from BSL (British Sign Language) clips, to visual stories and easy read documents. Many sites will also benefit from an all-terrain scooter or ‘Tramper’, which will enable people with limited mobility to access the countryside like never before.
Four heritage places are taking part in Dorset. These are Moors Valley Country Park, Lulworth Cove, Durlston Country Park and RSPB Arne. As part of the project, Heritage Ability are looking for disabled and Deaf volunteers with a passion for heritage to help spread the word, become advocates for the project and help their sites on their ongoing journey. They also need your help to conduct some mystery visits at the sites and provide feedback which the team can use to help the sites improve. For the Joy of Giving Through Music At the moment Wessex Chorus community choir are riding high from their sell out concert which was held at the Barrington Theatre, Ferndown, on Friday 4th August, and raised £1300 for the Bournemouth Blind Society. Brief history The choir started 9 years ago. It was founded by the wonderful choir director Martin Arthur. Martin formed a choir (way before Gareth Malone) in order to raise valuable funds for the local Alzheimer’s society, ‘a sort of giving back’ after witnessing the care the Alzheimer’s group gave to his mother. He supported this charity for a 2 year period. TV appearance with John Barrowman Mike, Martin’s partner, applied for a place on Barrowman’s BBC show, ‘Tonight’s the Night’ which was televised in Glasgow for national TV. Martin became part of the show, with the choir – then around 15-strong – making a surprise entry to join him on stage to huge applause and success. This raised the choir’s popularity and its membership has steadily grown to around fifty, now.

In August 2018, Wessex Chorus will be hosting a 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner. The objective for this event will be to acknowledge the sterling fundraising work Martin Arthur has done through the choir and project this work towards the future. Local Assistance Dog Charity Needs Help To Expand Verwood based Assistance Dog charity “Woofability” is appealing for more volunteers to help train their puppies and dogs as demand increases for their services. Chief Executive Andy Clarke says “We help children and adults with a wide range of disabilities including children with Autism or Down’s Syndrome. The effect a dog can have is truly remarkable and we are always inspired by seeing the results of our work.” Emma, Maxwell and Buddy Emma is 9 and has Autism, severe anxiety and has 40 epileptic absences each day. She has great difficulty in leaving the security of her own home and does not attend school because of her anxiety. We visited her with our Golden Retriever “Maxwell” who is particularly calm and ideally suited to support Emma. During our first visit, we took Emma to her local Asda Superstore which she had been unable to visit for several years and her father was amazed at how she coped for 25 minutes with no adverse reaction. The following day Maxwell visited school with Emma for just half an hour when all of the teachers came to see her and then went to Costa Coffee and McDonalds where she had never been able to go previously. Emma’s parents still cannot believe the difference in Emma’s ability to cope with the outside world and she hasn’t had any epileptic absences, her school arranged for Emma to restart her mainstream education and to take Maxwell with her to the delight of her teachers and fellow students. After three months the family went on holiday for the first time in years as Emma, her parents and younger sister are able to embark on a more “normal” lifestyle.

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well Nellie has been really busy this summer. We did think we might have to fit sails to her as there was so much rain but us Brits have a resilience with the attitude of “the show must go on no matter what”. We did just that. Do you remember those holidays long ago hearing the raindrops on the caravan roof, playing cards with Mum and Dad as it was too wet to go out? We had intended for quite some time to take Dad to Norden Farm near Corfe Castle to fish the carp lake I was so excited about some time ago. Thursday Mum and Dad arrived from Hull all raring to go. Friday morning, the set-off day… and the heavens opened! Stephen and I decided, no way, we will never camp in this. Dad however had a different idea. (I think Nellie had had a word with him…) “Let’s get the stuff in the van Deb and see what it’s like when we get there.” He said determinedly. Stephen and I looked at each other. Were we mad? Poor Mum looked confused.

Grandma catches the rare rays by Kombi So, Nellie who is an all-weather girl, grinned like a Cheshire cat as her engine sparked into life and she sprung into step. We were off. When we arrived, the rain had stopped. In fact, it didn’t rain the whole time we put up Kombi Ex, the awning. Result. Dad was smiling. He was also itching to see the pond (fishermen are like that you know, you can’t hold them back), so off we went to see what the water was like. Now, having had rain like that, the pond was very murky, chocolate brown and that doesn’t help the catching of big carp. Oh dear. Dad was still not to be disheartened and out came to rod...and everything else! Not a bite. We did see a few carp floating very slowly on top of the water but I think they were gasping for air actually, through the muddy liquid, and they were not at all interested in eating. As soon as the bait got anywhere near them, they casually swam away. They knew what game we were playing, and they were totally nonchalant about it. Time for us to eat instead then. Nellie took us into Corfe Castle where we had a great pub meal and then, as I did say

29 we are mad, a walk around the outside of the castle in the pouring rain which had started again. There was something really satisfying about that, as if we were defiantly disagreeing with the weather, with sheer determination to enjoy ourselves despite it. That is so British… and I love it! Nellie is Japanese, but has lived here a long time now and has totally adopted this crazy firmness of purpose. Hayden even got creative with his camera on his phone, focusing in on near objects with the castle in the background. With the mist around the castle, it was all very mysterious and peaceful. It is amazing what fun you can have if you ‘go with the flow’ and look at what can be done as opposed to concentrating on the problems, or stops. Nellie is a big believer in that. The next morning was glorious… until 11am. Nellie’s whistling kettle came out, the bacon sandwiches were delicious (if I say so myself) and we sat in wonderful sunshine hearing the birds singing and a few children playing nearby. Nellie was in her element and was fully satisfied with herself, as without her we would never have been there. Dad tried again with the fish, but got the same response. Complete rebuff. Very disappointing for him, but he is a long-term fisherman, now in his 83rd year having started fishing at a very early

It’s never too wet for ice cream! age, and has seen it all with regards to fresh water fishing. He is quite a pro, still fishing in matches up North where they live and regularly catches 30-70lb of fish. Just not on this occasion unfortunately. Later we met my sister and her hubby and we went into Swanage to have good old fish and chips. It rained again but umbrellas and coats have their purpose too. Games back at the campsite were hilarious. We played snakes and ladders! With today’s technology it is easy to forget the simple things and boy did we laugh. Nellie tooted her horn and it all got quite competitive. The last day we went for a drive. In fact we did a rather large circle, going into Wareham to have lunch by the river, then to Poole, across the ferry over to Studland (Dad was hoping we would go to the nudist beach, but Mum did hold him back this time) and had dinner at the very popular Scott Arms in Kingston. Another wonderful day. So, I suppose the moral of the story from Nellie is look at what can be done and keep that British determined attitude to have fun, no matter the weather! Talbot Village Trust invests in new equipment for Howe Croft Community Centre Talbot Village Trust has donated £5,000 to Howe Croft Community Centre for new equipment to be purchased to upgrade its current facilities.
Howe Croft Community Centre is currently used by members of the public for a variety of activities during the week such as baby yoga and circuit training. The donation given by the grant giving charity, has been used to invest in new equipment needed to create a dark, sound insulated space for regular community film viewings.

Tastes so good... Chewy Breakfast Bar
A delicious, chewy bar that’s packed full of dried fruits and nuts that’s perfect to be served as breakfast, or a lunchbox treat
Ingredients for 8 servings 1 cup almond butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup almond milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2.5 cups rolled oats 1 cup rice cereal 1/2 cup chopped almonds 1/2 cup sultanas 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate plus 1/4 cup melted to finish

Preheat the oven to 325f/160c
2.
Line a square baking tin (8x8in) with baking parchment. Spray a little coconut oil in first to help secure the paper.
3.
Mix the wet ingredients into a large bowl making sure the almond butter is fully combined.
4.
Add the dry ingredients and stir well.
5.
Spoon the mixture into your tin and press down well with your spatula.
6.
Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
7.
Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes then drizzle with dark chocolate.
8.
Pop in the fridge to ensure the chocolate is solid.
9.
You can store each slice in the freezer once wrapped in foil for up to three months or 1 week in the fridge.

• If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. • Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. • Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. • Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. • Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes. Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an
attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. Most types of herb can be raised from seed, but for a quicker start browse the farmers market, garden centre, or even car boot sales for plants that are ready to go. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

A breath of fresh air. That sums up the Isle of Wight in more ways than one. You see not only is it renowned for its clean air, many of the facilities and attractions are also of a high standard. “The Victorians visited the island for its superior air quality, which promoted good health,” explains Cherry Sanders, co-owner of Appuldurcombe Gardens Caravan and Camping Site at Ventnor, where we stay in a static caravan. “I originally come from the Midlands but moved here 12 years ago to live my mum’s dream of running a holiday business here.” The 14.5-acre site has 40 static caravans and 130 pitches for camping. It was a finalist in the Practical Caravan Top 100 Sites 2013 awards, testament to its excellent facilities, which include an award-winning toilet block with walk in showers “more like what you would find in a good quality hotel than a campsite,” my wife says. There’s also a delightful heated outdoor swimming pool, which opens from 8am to 9pm and no matter when you swim it is just the right temperature. The children’s play area includes swings, a slide and an assault course, which Harriett (3) completes. I don’t know of any other campsite that boasts a duck pond and holds a David Bellamy Gold Award for Conservation. Our static caravan is a good base from which to explore the island. We quickly realise that our limited time here will not allow us to cover everything that we want to and so pick a few attractions to visit.
As we are staying at Appuldurcombe Gardens, it is important that we visit Appuldurcombe House and Farm Park because at one time this was all one site and so all the gardens here and the orchard in the campsite have been designed by Capability Brown. Appuldurcombe House and Farm Park is literally just up the road from the campsite and is now run by English Heritage. There are two separate entrance fees for each attraction. Both are well worth a visit and between them make a fabulous day out. The house, when inhabited, was the largest private house on the island with 365 windows and seven staircases. We enjoy a picnic in the grounds where the children roam free. It is possible to rent one of seven holiday cottages here. The farm park is home to a variety of birds including owls, falcons and an eagle. There is so much to learn including how when falconry was introduced in 860AD in the UK it was only kings who could fly eagles. Apparently, falcons live twice as long in captivity because they don’t have to work as hard so will live for 20 years. There are activities scheduled throughout the day to keep us all amused. We enjoy a bird display, a ride in a tractor trailer taking in the spectacular views and a stroll around the farm where we see goats, pigs and sheep. The play area is much appreciated by our two daughters. When we visit The Isle of Wight Bus Museum at Ryde we are not sure how our little daughters will react. But to our surprise they thoroughly enjoy it, each wanting to steer and take turns at being passengers. Home to 23 buses, the museum has done a marvellous job in preserving this little bit of island heritage. The visit reinforces how design has, in my opinion, gone backwards; old buses with real wood interiors look so much more attractive than new ones. These buses are also driven on the road. The GTE badge was first ushered in with the VW Golf and it eventually made its way to the more conservative Passat. Bolting a plug-in petrol-electric propulsion unit to a model that is best known for its diesel pulling power was perhaps a brave move for Volkswagen. But it seems to have paid off with the Passat. Like the Golf, the VW Passat GTE’s looks are characterised by C-shaped LED lights accommodated in its bumper, and the blue bar that stretches across the headlights and grille. It’s a restrained fine-tuning of the Passat’s tailoring, although, given the intense hue of blue, the use of which even expands to the car’s brake callipers, the GTE model is simple enough to distinguish from diesel Passats. The battery capacity and output have been given a bit of a boost, but the petrol-electric set-up is fundamentally the same as in the VW Golf GTE’s. The 156PS 1.4 TSI petrol unit and 115PS electric motor combine to make 218PS, giving a 0-62mph sprint of 7.4 seconds. Top speed is 140mph, but unless you’re on a German autobahn, you’re unlikely to risk finding out what that feels like. Step into the cabin and the Passat GTE houses a few understated touches, such as blue piping, blue stitching, aluminium trim and GTE emblems. Other than that, the switchgear and seats are the same as in any other Passat. And, as with all Passat saloons, space is generous. Even with the car’s lithium ion drive battery beneath the rear seats, the VW has good room and a boot that is big enough for a family’s needs. The Volkswagen’s electric charging time is easy to cope with. Plugging the car’s seven-pin charge cable into a 16A wall socket, I got the 9.9kWh battery from a quarter charged
to 100 per cent in under two hours. The GTE runs well on electric-only juice, with a possible range of 31 miles on zero emissions. In Hybrid form the VW saloon responds admirably, even when the petrol engine has closed, which it’ll do at moderate motorway speeds. The power unit restarts effortlessly when it needs to, while the car’s cruise control allows it to store its own impetus and cruise economically. The Passat GTE’s handling is as good as its performance. You can thrust the saloon through bends and its tyres will dig into the tarmac strongly. There’s very little body roll, and the steering, while not delivering that much feedback, is precise. Here’s the important bit, though. VW claims the Passat GTE will do 156.9mpg on the combined cycle. But, as with all cars, this model’s economy will depend on what your driving is like. On a 60-mile run, beginning with a fully charged battery and driving on a mix of roads, I achieved 80.1mpg. Volkswagen’s Passat GTE is, without doubt, a talented car and an attractive vehicle in a wider sense than a conventional high-performing, fully loaded volume-marque. By blending large car pragmatism with a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system, VW has produced one of the greatest reasons yet to think about swapping from a standard oilburning business saloon to an electrically powered one.
