Kaden runs in memory of Hero dad An 8 year-old local boy has raised almost £1,700 for charity after completing the Junior 1.5K at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival in memory of his Dad. Kaden Dugmore from Poole decided to run for Forest Holme Hospice because they had provided end-of-life care for his Dad, Karl, who passed away aged just 39 in August this year. Kaden sacrificed his playtime to train by competing in Sunday Park Runs or in the evenings with his Uncle Bodge, come rain or shine. He said, “I ran the Junior 1.5K in memory of my Daddy who was my Hero and lots of his friends called him ‘Legend’. Daddy loved to run whenever he could squeeze in the time from taking care of me. I know I will make him very proud. This is my first challenge and I hope there will be more.” Paul Tucker, Fundraising Manager at Forest Holme, said, “Kaden is a very special little boy and we are all so Kaden, with his late Dad, Karl

touched by what he has done and absolutely overwhelmed with the amount he has raised. His Dad was clearly loved by many.” Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and Isle of Purbeck, and Kaden’s mum Kimmie is very grateful for the care he received there. She said, “We would like to thank all of the staff at Forest Holme Hospice for the love, care and respect that you gave to Karl and our family while we were there. The dedication and support that you provide to your patients - there are no words to explain. We were truly touched and so appreciative of everything you did for us.”

Local Heritage: Lest We Forget To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the declaration of War on 3rd September 1939, my recent exhibition “A World at War … Again!” at the Meeting House dealt with the political consequences of the 1919 Versailles Treaty and others that followed. It continued with the western passivism and national and international disruptions that followed, the threats of fascism and communism, the rise of Naziism, and eventually the return, in some cases too late, of an arms race as Hitler and his later puppet Mussolini, ignored all attempts at appeasement. My article in the November 2017 issue dealt with the eight local men of WW2 who are remembered on the panel in “All Saints” Church, while there are two locals from WW1 among the 111 on the WW1 panel of the Ringwood memorial. This year’s “Lest We Forget” display will once more remind us of the sacrifices of all those up and down the Avon Valley in both wars, including just one woman on the Ringwood one.
That nurse, Dorothy Anyta Field, whose family had links with Crow, drew special attention from the BBC in June this year, as she and a colleague will be the only two women to appear among almost 25,000 British and Commonwealth personnel who were killed during the Normandy campaign that will appear on the new memorial near Gold Beach. When their hospital ship struck a mined obstacle off Juno beach, she insisted on being placed on board to assist in helping wounded men trapped below, of whom she was instrumental in saving 75, before the forward half of the ship sank. The “Lest We Forget” display has become an annual event at the Meeting House. In 2000/1, three Ringwood men researched all the War Memorials up and down the Avon Valley, accessed the Commonwealth War Grave records, and took photographs of as many memorials as possible. Some relatives donated memorabilia and photographs. In June 2014 I provided

15 an exhibition to commemorate the outbreak of WW1, the only event in town at the time. During August, at the Council’s request, I Iisted almost all 164 names on the memorial, most with considerable personal and family data. Since September 3rd 2014, a Lantern of Remembrance at the Gateway, now a customised design since 2018, has been illuminated on every known annual date of their deaths. Three from WW1 cannot be so remembered, two lacking a day within the month, and just one not as yet traced. In 2017 a full set of the original 2001 files was donated by the widow of one of the trio, Bernard Luckham. Following on from the September interwar years display, this year’s “Lest We Forget” lead in section will provide in more detail the events of 1919, while the various conflicts beyond the Western fronts continued to occupy our servicemen. At the Meeting House the “Ringwood at War” series of files continues to expand, although actual items and pictures that relate directly to the town are relatively scarce. Even for the intended topic for this issue, “Wartime Uses of the Heaths”, they have proved inadequate. A number of Army camps are labelled being at “St. Leonards” in 1907, although
precisely where they were is unclear, given the relatively uninhabited and open nature of most of our parish at the time. The “RFA” here is presumably the “Royal Field Artillery”. Several others provided by the late Ted Baker include various regiments, but none are of any of the Hampshires. Some dated 1901 are of the local Caribiniere volunteers. The stories of the WW2 underground movement and radio chain centred on St. Leonards Hotel and the American wartime hospital have already been covered in this series. Several Meeting House “War” files, some new, will as usual be made more readily accessible on the tables of this year’s display. John Hawkins

Talking about Wildlife...
The Deceptive Cuttlefish The closest most people come to a cuttlefish is when their white ‘bones’ wash up on beaches after rough weather. These are the evolutionary remains of the animal’s shell, as cuttlefish are molluscs, relatives of the snails in your garden. Way back in the evolutionary past, their protective shell was internalised and then evolved into the cuttlefish bone, which is used to provide the animal with buoyancy in the sea. By regulating how much gas the bone contains they can move up or down in the water without having to expend energy on swimming. If you pick one up it feels light. Cuttlefish bones are not the only thing that makes this animal extraordinary. They are recognised as intelligent animals, indeed, research has shown that they can be more intelligent than cats and dogs. Capable of counting at an equivalent level as a 4 year old child, they can also solve puzzles, negotiate mazes and plan ahead. to get what they want – something that only a handful of species, including ourselves, are known to do. Cuttlefish communicate using the colours and patterns on their skin, which they can change instantaneously. This is especially used in courtship, when males compete for a female. Male cuttlefish have been filmed displaying female patterning on one side of their body (where a competing male can see it) whilst at the same time displaying to the female on their other side that he is an interested male. By deceiving the male cuttlefish into believing it is a female and therefore no threat, it avoids a physical battle, whilst at the same time giving the female his ‘come hither’ signals. While divers regularly encounter and interact with cuttlefish in our coastal waters, most people do not have the opportunity to meet these most interesting of animals. However at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset Wildlife Trust had a baby cuttlefish in its aquarium. It is one that washed ashore as an egg and subsequently hatched in the aquarium where it grew rapidly ready for release last month. Understanding Investments:
Pensions - The Saver’s Misunderstood Friend Over the years, changing government legislation has resulted in unnecessary pension complexity and when something becomes complicated, people often lose interest or stop attempting to understand. However, this can lead to a missed opportunity as the flexibility and tax advantages of pensions should be the cornerstone of a saver’s planning. Let’s reposition the argument: 1 - Would you be interested in an investment which offers an immediate return of between 25% and 82% (via tax relief and pre-charges)? 2 - Would you be interested in an investment which can grow tax free? 3 - Would you be interested in an investment which could offer some of the lowest investment management charges in the marketplace? 4 - Would you like to accumulate capital which is exempt from inheritance tax? 5 - Would you like to pass on your wealth tax free on your death (if you die pre-age 75. If post age 75 subject to the beneficiaries’ tax rates). I believe most people would answer yes to each of the 5 questions and pensions provide a positive response to each of the questions. In addition, in a company scheme the employer often contributes additional money on your behalf. So, what’s the catch? Complexity and lack of understanding are the biggest barriers, followed by the fact you cannot access capital or income until age 55 (expected to rise to 57 in 2028 in line with the state pension age increases and then remain 5 years below state pension age). In addition, income above a tax-free sum of 25% of the fund, is taxable at the saver’s income tax rate. But I don’t believe these should be seen as reasons not to utilise pensions as a cornerstone in saving for retirement. It could be argued that the fact one cannot access the funds until at least age 55 adds discipline
to saving, if done alongside other accessible savings. In my experience, with Howard Goodship the flexibilities granted in the 2015 Pensions Freedoms, it’s often possible to structure income withdrawals to at least minimise any tax on the income and at best negate it completely. For many clients, pension funds accumulated over the years can be their largest asset other than their home, and yet they don’t understand where the money is invested nor the amount they are being charged each year by the pension provider. This is a wasted opportunity. If you are working and saving for retirement or are already retired and have money invested in money purchase pension funds, I’d encourage you to contact your financial adviser and enquire about a review of your pensions and general saving or withdrawal strategy. If you aren’t in contact with your financial adviser or don’t have one, Stewart and I would be delighted to chat with you and identify how we might help. Ultimately, the less you pay in fees, the more tax you save and the better your investments perform should result in you either needing to save less or saving the same but being left with a bigger pot of money at the end. On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.
