Nuffield Health Bournemouth Welcomes Dorset’s Only Female Orthopaedic Surgeon Nuffield Health is ‘thrilled’ to welcome Dorset’s first female orthopaedic surgeon to its evergrowing team of leading consultants. Nikki Kelsall is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle problems, including diabetic foot conditions. Nikki offers a regular clinic at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital tending to patients with any problems affecting their feet or ankles. Nikki often sees patients that suffer with bunions, curly toes, flat feet, foot or ankle pain, ulcers, ankle arthritis and Achilles disorders. As well as this, Nikki also commonly sees patients with soft tissue and bony foot or ankle injuries. As a once committed dancer and performer, Nikki knows first-hand how important it is to look after your feet. Nikki Kelsall, orthopaedic surgeon, said: “I was a dancer for 13 years before studying medicine, this helps me understand why amateur and professional performers and athletes, have a drive to get back on their feet quickly, no matter their age. “Recently I treated a man in his 70s who is a professional table tennis champion and required treatment for foot pain, but was desperate to be in tip-top shape before an upcoming match. I was delighted to be able to help him with this.” Nikki undertook her medical training in Bristol and Liverpool before moving to Bournemouth in 2003. Community News

Return of longest running Docu-soap, Monkey Life, to our screens on Pick Monkey Life series 11 returned to our screens on channel Pick last month, with the much anticipated catch up of all the rescues and daily dramas at the world’s biggest primate rescue centre. Based at Monkey World, Dorset, the documentary follows Dr Alison Cronin and the team, as she rescues primates in need from around the world, and rehabilitates them into groups of their own kind. At the centre, they have a safe, stable home for life.

Capturing the day-to-day life of residents

The programme is one of the longest running docu-soaps on TV, as its former incarnation, Monkey Business first appeared on screens in 1998. Nicknamed by staff “Beast-enders”, the series won a place in the public’s hearts with its fascinating, and often tragic insight into monkey and ape rescues. Series 11 follows Alison to Lebanon and Turkey to rescue two guenons, a baby loris and a chimpanzee, while back in Dorset it captures the day-today lives of the 260 primate residents of Monkey World.

Filmed over a year, the series takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, from the woolly monkey group celebrating new arrivals, to tense rescue operations, and the teams’ sad goodbyes to old friends too. Monkey Life series 11 will be shown on Freeview channel Pick at 6pm, every Sunday from 11th November 2018.

Heritage News

Local Heritage: Please... Help! Christmas was once the traditional period when we were genuinely expected to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. Today we are continually bombarded to help those affected by national and international disasters; to contribute weekly sums to all manner of charities and fill their doorstep bags; and the sight of the present generation’s version of beggars, to use an old term. Last month’s thoughts of “damaged” returning servicemen on the streets as the nation “forgot” is fresh in some of our memories. Meanwhile local authority funds are stretched beyond the government-imposed limits to provide health and other care services to those in need of such help. In the 19th century Dickens drew attention to such people in his books, dramatically portrayed in film and on stage by Oliver Twist

with his plea for more. Here on the very edge of our parish we have a constant reminder with a building at the end of the Verwood Road, with its large plaque over the central door, that first took on such tasks in 1725. Seen here in its original form in about 1900, the building was once just the central section, but had no doubt been extended at each end fairly early on. The 1847 Tithe Award map certainly shows an extensive building on Plot 1632, owned by “the Churchwardens & Overseers of Ringwood” who, when combined with the adjacent “garden” owned by the Earl of Normanton on Plot 1631, occupy an overall site of about 2.25 acres. The named managers and occupants throughout the 19th century are listed in the ten-yearly census transcriptions available at the Meeting House. Some of historian the late Ted Baker’s documents also on file cover the town and church’s responsibilities under the earlier Poor Laws. This poster, issued in August 1850 by solicitor Henry Tremenheere Johns in his role as Clerk of the Board of Guardians, makes it clear that the travelling homeless could not just turn

up to gain sustinence and a bed. This was simply a later means of ensuring that people from outside the area could not freely obtain care that had already been paid for by local people in some form of local taxation. It was about this time that Charles Castleman, owner by now of his 50 acre St. Ives House estate, having transferred his Ringwood practice to Johns, applied to become a Guardian of the Workhouse. Unfortunately, the “Roman Road” line passed just six feet north of his home, so most of his property (as well as all of St.Leonards and St. Ives) at the time was still within the limits of Christchurch Parish. He attempted to persuade the Guardians to change their minds by suggesting creating living accommodation in his outhouses north of the line, without success. In 1996 local author Frank Agass recorded the facts that there was a treadmill to raise water from a well; and the inmates grew their own vegetables and raised chickens for their eggs. Thinking Christmas, the local 1930s Medical Officer, Ringwood historian Dr. Little, was expected to visit that day to attend their dinner, when they enjoyed free beer provided by William Frampton. Visitors to the Meeting House are often rather surprised to find occupants with their own family’s surnames. Most of its records are available at Hampshire Records Office. In 1936 the old rules and regulations

ceased to apply, and alternative support arrangements were brought into play, and the Trustees had to dispose of the buildings. The Somerley Estate was not interested in the site, other than the open land around it. The property was placed on the market for £500, but the Trustees ended up accepting a £100 offer from local businessman Charles Britton. He knocked down one end of the building and replaced it with a new house for himself. The central section was eventually developed as a separate home, which, from this picture from some recent sales agency literature, retains several original features, including this massive inglenook fireplace. The western wing was also turned into a run of individual properties, which became known as Ashley Cottages. The whole building was eventually listed Grade II. At the Meeting House we will be welcoming all our visitors, old and new, to another exhibition of local art by Michael Blake, plus a selection of seasonal cards by his wife. Understanding Investments: Managing Risk & Tax to Earn a Higher Return My last article ended with a quote from Benjamin Graham: “Successful Investing is about managing risk, not avoiding it.” I concluded that for the everyday saver owning a combination of the main asset classes - Cash, Fixed Interest Investments, Property and Shares was often the most effective way to invest. Savers should remember that the theory of diversification can be applied to their existing savings and investments – by considering the products they own. Alongside tax efficiency this is a powerful combination. There are three common tax-efficient investment products - ISAs, Pensions and Investment Bonds. All too often I hear people say, “My ISA hasn’t done very well,” or “Pensions aren’t very good, are they?” to which I reply, “The ISA and the pension are not usually the problem, it is the underlying investment that is normally the issue.” I prefer to call these products ‘tax wrappers’ as they simply wrap around investments. What is key is selecting the most suitable investments and the most appropriate wrapper for your personal circumstances. The key wrappers include: ISAs ISAs have tax advantages. You do not pay tax on the interest earned on cash or fixed interest investments, or on rental income from property and dividends on shares. There is no tax to pay on capital gains either, so for most taxpayers it makes sense to hold cash and investments within an ISA wrapper up to their annual contribution limit. Help to Buy ISAs and Lifetime ISAs also have additional tax advantages. Investments Bonds Investment bonds are common and offered by the larger insurance companies. There are two types of funds; With Profits or Unit-Linked and both have the same tax rules. Onshore bond Income and growth is taxed within the bond by the insurer, which allows the holder to draw out up to 5% of the amount invested without any immediate tax liability. Offshore bonds are available which defer tax on income and growth. Many people own investment bonds because they appear simple and they treat the 5% withdrawals as income, but in many instances the growth of the investment is being reduced by the ongoing “tax-drag” within the bond. Pensions Controversial and often tinkered with by the government, but still a highly tax efficient way to save for retirement. Many different schemes exist from simple workplace pensions to

Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPS). The most appropriate scheme will depend on your personal circumstances. Howard Goodship This includes your earnings, age to retirement and income plans at retirement. Pensions benefit from the same tax treatment as ISAs, but with the additional benefit of tax-relief on contributions. The disadvantage is that you cannot access them until age 55 and may pay tax at that point on capital and/or income (although the ways you can access pensions is far more flexible now than ever before). You could theoretically own exactly the same underlying investments (hopefully properly diversified) within an ISA, a Pension or an Insurance Bond. However, the return you receive would be different. A simplistic example is detailed below assuming a basic rate taxpayer, a £40000 investment and a 5% return: ISA: £40000 x 5% = £2000 return Investment Bond: £40000 x 5% = £2000 less corporation tax @ 19% = £1620 return Pension: £40000 x 5% = £2000 return. Basic rate tax relief into the pension reduces the cost to £33334 so the return is £8666 (Please note - there are additional rules around maximum contributions into pensions and taxes when drawing the benefits). The right choice of wrapper will depend on your personal circumstances and I recommend seeking professional advice. Making the right choices now will results in you earning, and keeping, more of your returns and will help make your financial goals more achievable. Thinking Green! Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, littered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?

Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way. For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive a�er years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take little or no effort and could actually save you money in the process. 1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bottles. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bottle, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again. 2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its

wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!

3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Replace your coﬀee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? Parley First School gets new play equipment thanks to Tesco Ferndown and John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation The pupils at Parley First School are enjoying their fabulous new Woodland Play Equipment thanks to the Bags of Help scheme at Tesco Ferndown and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF). The JTYAF applied for funding from the scheme where the money raised by the sale of carrier bags is being used to fund thousands of local projects. Customers ‘vote’ for their chosen charity and the charity with the most votes wins £4000, second place £2000 and third place £1000. The JTYAF is delighted to announce that thanks to their supporters they were lucky enough to receive the top prize of £4000, which has made a huge impact on the lives

of hundreds of children at Parley First School. This fantastic new equipment has provided an inspiring and challenging area where the children can develop a range of physical skills. Part of the drive at the school, to keep the children fit and active and it is certainly having the desired effect. The new play trail is hugely popular with all the pupils. The JTYAF and all the children at Parley First School would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who popped a blue token in the box for this exciting project. Lighthouse receives commendations at architectural awards Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts is celebrating recognition for its extensive £5.3m refurbishment in 2015-16 with commendations in two major architectural awards. The iconic arts building was Highly Commended in the Community category at the 2018 SPACES Awards, held by the Society for Public Architecture, Construction, Engineering and Surveying. The only awards solely dedicated to rewarding excellence and innovation in construction projects delivered within the public sector, the SPACES Awards are not purely about design; they recognise the importance of team play in delivering a project that aims to achieve the ‘golden triangle’ in terms of meeting the brief, delivering on time and to the set budget. In addition, Lighthouse was a finalist in the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) Awards in London on 2 November, after being named the South West’s regional winner of the Community Benefit category. The awards are regarded as the premier property and construction awards in the country, celebrating the most innovative projects in the region and their impact on local communities. RICS recognised that the integrated design team for Lighthouse led by Design Engine Architects made a series of strategic interventions which breathe new life into many of the key facilities of the arts complex, ensuring it has a bright future at the centre of the community. Chief Executive for Lighthouse, Elspeth McBain commented: “We are thrilled that

our refurbishment project has been recognised in this way. The work has transformed our building and the benefit to our artists, audiences and staff has been immense. To have an award for our work on top of this is really wonderful.” “This was a fascinating project for us. Not only because we had the opportunity to work on the largest arts centre in the country, outside of London, but we had full reign to implement a series of architecturally strategic and technically challenging interventions which have already proved to have captured the support of a much wider audience within the community. The project has realised greater financial sustainability for the Lighthouse, which in turn has enabled a much more diverse artistic programme to be offered.” said Rod Graham of Design Engine. The refurbishment of Lighthouse was planned in two phases and part-funded by grants from the Arts Council and Borough of Poole, with the remainder raised by the venue’s own fundraising campaigns.

No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)

and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche

Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.

Bournemouth & Poole College showcases local talent at the fifth Dorset Arts Prize One of the largest arts prizes outside London has once again attracted outstanding submissions. This year Bournemouth & Poole College teamed up with Poole Museum to present the ﬁfth Dorset Arts Prize. Created to actively engage the community and help promote a broader, more inclusive vision for the arts locally, the competition was open to all Dorset artists, designers and makers. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘open’, to allow the artists the freedom to produce work in whichever format they felt most conﬁdent in. This year the Arts Prize welcomed Sibyl Fine King, director of the Fine Family Foundation, as the newest member of the judging panel. The foundation supports Dorset-based charitable bodies working with the environment, the arts, education, health and also in community projects. Sibyl worked alongside international artist and former student Stuart Semple, international photographer Tony Worobiec and the Borough of Poole’s Museum and Arts Manager Michael Spender, to judge the competition. Funded by the College and the Dorset Community Foundation Trust, the winners of the award categories ranged from Year 10 and Year 11’s, to the over 19’s and received rewards of up to £1,000. The winner of the Student Achievement Award also won a £2,500 bursary to put towards higher education progression or a business start-up. This year’s winner of the Achievement Award was photography graduate Charlotte Acton. Charlotte one day hopes to open her own photography studio and expressed her joy at receiving the award, which she “really didn’t expect to win”. Charlotte was rewarded for her portraiture work. She explained how she enjoyed creating photographic portraits of her brother, who is “one in a million.” She went on to say that “his features are really unique and offer some fascinating angles.” Parkstone Grammar School’s winner of the 16-18 year old category, Mia Pangilinan, was equally pleased with her award. Mia took the time to create a 3D piece of work depicting “the little things in life.”

Mia explained that she wanted “to take everyday things in life that we don’t appreciate and make them permanent.” Parkstone Grammar representatives Elizabeth Sturdy and Anne Batley were hugely impressed with Mia’s imaginative artwork, along with the submissions of their other students which contributed to Parkstone Grammar winning the overall School Art Prize. The pair explained how they encourage as many of their students as possible to enter their competition, as “they have a really good chance to gain some rewards and recognition for producing such wonderful work.” Anne and Elizabeth also mentioned that their students were “hugely excited” at the prospect of their work being on display for the public at the Poole Museum. Diane Grannell, Bournemouth & Poole College Principal, said: “It was a pleasure to work with the Poole Museum to host the ﬁfth Dorset Arts Prize. “The Prize has always been a fantastic way to encourage collaboration between local schools, and as a way for both students and adults in the local community to showcase their tremendous creativity and talent. “With the artwork being placed on display in the museum, we are proud that this year the wider public can also enjoy the fantastic work that has been submitted.”

Tapper Funeral Service brings home gold for its state-of-the-art crematorium Tapper Funeral Service’s Harbour View Woodland Burial Ground and Crematorium has received the gold award and the overall winner’s prize for the cemeteries and crematoria category, at the South & South East in Bloom Awards 2018. The annual competition received fewer than 300 entries from community gardening groups, villages, towns and cities from across the south, hoping to receive a special recognition for their commitment to horticulture and environmental conservation. Judges praised Harbour View and deemed it ‘a most impressive site’ and went on to say: “Out of all the cemeteries and crematoria visited by the judges over the years, Harbour View is an outstanding example of design, layout, maintenance, and customer service. There are no areas of improvements to be made, therefore Harbour View should continue to deliver the current service on offer, at these very high standards.” Steven Tapper, joint managing director at Tapper Funeral Service, said: “We are so proud to have won the overall crematoria category and to achieve gold for Harbour View. The team is committed to working tremendously hard to maintain the high standard of the facilities available for people during their time of need and this accolade affirms this. “It was important for us to design a crematorium which has a spiritual identity and meaning by linking the building to the natural surroundings and wildlife which lives at Harbour View. It is fantastic to see that the judges picked up on this and it is

reflected in their outstanding comments after their site visit.” Harbour View Crematorium is the first crematorium to open in Dorset for more than 30 years, and has seen a £4million investment in the county. It is only the fourth crematorium to open (with Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth being the other three). The crematorium is located within Dorset’s ancient woodland in Lytchett Minster, creating a peaceful environment with panoramic views of Poole Harbour and the Purbeck hills. The 70-acre site presents a unique offering by bringing all the facilities required to conduct a funeral under one roof. The Purbeck Tea Room is the crematorium’s private on-site refreshment space which can be used after a funeral has taken place. Families have the opportunity to plan the funeral they want and will be given the time needed to say goodbye to their loved ones. Harbour View is also more flexible in terms of service options, including enabling funerals to be held at the weekend.
