I do love November and Bonfire Night. It is as special today as it was when I was young. The family fun atmosphere, the burgers, hotdogs and burning wood smells in the air. The cold, wrapped-up feeling with bright lights suddenly appearing all over the night sky. Oh yes! I do hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Please keep your pets safe.

Nellie, the Dorset Directories Campervan, was not able to take us to the Eden Project, but we were able to tell her what a great day we had.

It is an amazing place and I do hope you enjoy the read.

First World War Memorial at All Saints Church, Southbourne

Alfred Frank Reginald Clarke

Alfred Frank Reginald Clarke, known as Reg, was the eldest son of Alfred, a joiner, and Mary Clarke of 78 Castlemain Avenue, West Southbourne.

Alfred had two older sisters Mary Louisa and Ada Gwendolyn, a younger sister Lilian May and a younger brother William John known as Jack. In 1911 Reg, aged 15, was employed as a solicitor’s clerk in the office of Mr P F Tanner of West Southbourne. He was also a Senior Patrol Leader in the 23rd Bournemouth (All Saints Church) Boy Scouts, as was his younger brother Jack. Reg’s father was the troop Scoutmaster in 19191.

Reg, with three other local Scouts, joined up for war service in 1914. They had all just turned 18.

As keen scouts, amongst other qualifications, they had all gained the St John Ambulance Certificate.

Reg rose quickly to become a Staff Sergeant. Senior to Sergeant, he would have been addressed as Staff Clarke or just Staff. Staff Sergeant Clarke and the other scouts were posted to Field Ambulance Stations and sailed for France in 1915.

The Field Ambulance was a mobile front line medical unit (not a vehicle), manned by troops of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Most Field Ambulances came under command of a Division, and each had special responsibility for the care of casualties of one of the Brigades of the Division. The theoretical capacity of the Field Ambulance was 150 casualties, but in battle many would need to deal with very much greater numbers.2 Although we don’t know what division Reginald was attached to it was described as a ‘division that has taken part in most of the big offensives in France and Belgium’.3 In 1918 Alfred Frank Reginald Clarke was awarded The (Belgian) Croix de Guerre and was the third member of the 23rd Scout Troop to win Military Honours. The Belgian Croix De Guerre was established by Royal Decree October 25th, 1915 and was awarded to Belgian and military personnel

of allied forces for bravery in face of the enemy; for three or more years spent on the front line; to men who enlisted over the age of 40 or under the age of 16; to escaped prisoners of war who rejoined their battalions and to military personnel placed on inactive duties due to injuries.

“It may be noted here as a tribute to the value of scout training and a matter for congratulation to the 23rd Troop Bournemouth Scouts that Staff Sergeant Clarke is the third member of that troop to gain coveted military distinction, the others being Captain Keeling, MC and Sergeant Read, MM both of whom were Assistant Scoutmasters.”4 Reg’s younger brother Jack, a wireless operator on a minesweeper, was the third member of the Scout troop to be awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre. Both Reg and Jack survived the war but Reg died possibly from the effect of wounds or gas in 1919, he was 23.

This is my last piece for the Link, as the centenary of the armistice approaches the stories are all told. Thank you to those who have followed and commented upon them. All 42 of the stories will be on display in All Saints Church, Castlemain Avenue during November for those who wish to visit.

BLUE PLANET II - LIVE IN CONCERT Community News

BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019.

A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show.

Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.

Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!”

Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman.

Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”.

Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural

wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers.

The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. All of the arena venues have long term goals to reduce the use of plastic, lower carbon footprints, reduce energy consumption and improve awareness.

During the filming of the Blue Planet II television program, film crews embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries and spent over 6,000 hours of deep sea diving armed with the latest state of the art equipment. Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

There’s something wild about Brownsea Dorset Wildlife Trust is launching a new and exciting project called Wild Brownsea designed to bring people in Dorset closer to nature and needs your help to secure the future of a unique island.

Over the next three years we will look to upgrade the visitor facilities on the island’s nature reserve, while reducing the impact of visitor numbers on the fragile island habitat.

By recognising the islands full potential as the perfect place to offer a richer wildlife experience, we will inspire future generations to protect our precious wildlife and wildplaces. But we need to reach our fundraising target by January 2019, for every £1 you donate the wildlife of Brownsea gets £10.

For such a small island Brownsea has had an eventful past and now looks to play an equally important role in the future of wildlife conservation in Dorset. It has been gifted by Kings and Queens, set alight and bombed by the Luftwaffe in WWII and even hosted the first Boy Scout camp in 1907. It’s a wonder it’s survived to tell the tale.

Introducing... Artemis Theatre I set up Artemis Theatre and Performance Arts to open up a safe space for people to enjoy their own creative expression, not necessarily on the stage but within an exciting Hub of creating a production together from script to performance.

We are community theatre company based in Bournemouth, Dorset, not an amateur society nor a professional theatre, although we do focus professionalism.

Artemis is inspired by Ancient and modern Myths and Storytelling from the diverse cultures of our Society; especially Greek myths. We will be choosing a Myth or fable to develop together.

Dance, drama and music can be used to tap into dimensions of reality beyond our every day consciousness; revealing hidden aspects of our nature not usually given voice or expression. What makes Artemis different is the focus on transformation through specific techniques to open up and use that inner world, such as conscious breathing exercises, storytelling, visualization, improvisation and creative use of traditional drama techniques Our Imagination is one of the most powerful gifts a human being has! This ability is often not taken as seriously as a scientific, reasoning process. The use of this gift connects us to the inner world.

The ability to visualise and focus a different reality. Here is where we can create new outcomes, the resolving of problems.

All human beings have a vast array of personalities within. The ability to visualize through images, and symbols can be developed so that we can create pictures of what we want in our lives. Story telling is a great way to increase this ability.

Group energy work I am inspired by magic, (not spells by the way) but by the creative power we actually have, I am inspired how extraordinary we Human Beings are! I believe that Humans are essentially magical beings. I want to inspire you to ignite your passion, your aliveness and the ‘magic’ of who you are.

A recent survey has revealed that over half of people have not updated their will or organised their Lasting Power of Attorneys.

An online poll indicated that while people had started to recognise the importance of consolidating their final wishes, they were unaware of the need to review them.

Whilst writing a will is important, the need to review and update them regularly should not be overlooked, particularly after a significant change in circumstance.

The results of the poll suggest that many people are unaware of the need to check their will, not to mention the impact which legislative and familial changes can have on the distribution of their estate.

Nigel Skilton of Dorset Wills commented. “Any change in circumstances can have a huge impact on your will. Marriage is the big one. There are a lot of

couples out there that made a will together before they married, perhaps when they bought a house together, or had children, and they don’t realise that getting married automatically invalidates any existing will.

“As estates fluctuate in value, people need to make sure their will is consistent with their finances. As wealth increases, so does the impact of inheritance tax, which means careful planning is needed to take advantage of available exemptions and allowances.

Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee…

The whole day was truly enjoyable.

Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her.

Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight.

Talbot Village Trust honours founder Georgina Talbot Talbot Village Trust, the local grant giving charity, has had to invest £10,000 into the restoration of the Georgina Talbot memorial at St. Mark’s Church in Talbot Village, Bournemouth, following graffiti and other environmental damage recently inflicted on the stone.

The Trust was founded in the 1850 by Georgina and Mary Talbot, and as a result of this legacy now gives away £1million per year to local causes.

Georgina Talbot’s memorial was erected following her death in 1860 to commemorate her philanthropic approach to life which benefitted the wider community. More than 150 years later, the Trust has invested £10,000 to restore and re-engrave the inscription on the memorial which still stands today in Talbot Village.

Sir Christopher Lees, chairman of Talbot Village Trust, explained: “We are deeply saddened by the vandalism of the monument, it is important for us to honour Georgina Talbot’s legacy in this way so that people in the community who have benefitted from the sisters’ incredible gift to the area, understand the history of the Trust.

“As a result of careful investment of the Talbot sisters’ legacy, the Trust has been able to maintain the value of the fund to ensure important causes across Dorset continue to receive financial support. No cause is too small and we look at every application individually to provide grants for

local charities, schools and places of worship.”

Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in the autumn of this year. Previous applications have included Livability Holton Lee which received £100,000 to fund the construction of its new Spinal Injury Centre in Dorset.

The centre is now able to provide respite and rehabilitation services to people suffering with a spinal cord injury.

The Sheiling Ringwood, a college for young people with disabilities in Dorset, was also awarded £120,000 to construct two new classrooms. This expansion has meant that the college is now able to increase its potential intake to 42 students.

Exclusive 100th Birthday Celebration raises thousands for Dorset Blind Association Dorset Blind Association, a charity helping blind and partially sighted people across Dorset to live happy lives, held their exclusive Centenary Ball took place on Saturday 13th October at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth. The prestigious 100th Anniversary celebration raised a phenomenal £22,705 on the night: an incredible amount and also the most that the charity has ever raised in one event.

The event, which was kindly sponsored by long-running supporter Blue Sky Financial Planning, saw over 160 guests put in an appearance to celebrate an impressive 100 years of Dorset Blind Association, with guests arriving in their finest dinner suits and posh frocks to a red carpet welcome complimentary glass of champagne, followed by a three-course dinner with wine and coffee.

The Centenary celebrations were thoroughly embraced by the guests, who tried their hands at the Viva Las Vegas Casino, danced the night away to the fantastic sounds of Swing Unlimited Big Band and participated in the accompanying raffle and auction. To get the guests up and moving after dinner, a fun and thoroughly entertaining game of Heads or Tails was played to music.

Guests had the opportunity to meet the charity’s patrons, Lord and Lady Julian and Emma Fellowes, and DBA President, James Weld. On display was an exhibition of Dorset Blind Association’s extensive history, featuring a timeline of the most important milestones in the past 100 years of this local charity.

Jonathan Holyhead, Chief Executive Officer of Dorset Blind Association, said:

“The evening was a wonderful, happy way to help celebrate our centenary. I am absolutely thrilled by the amount raised and I cannot thank people enough for their generosity.

This money will go towards the provision of future services and support for blind and partially sighted people across Dorset, so a great many people will benefit from it and on their behalf I want to say “thank you”, again, to everyone who helped make the Ball such a huge success.”

The charity have now held their annual Ball for 4 years, and will be returning with their Masquerade theme next year on Saturday 26th October. Get the date in your diary now so you won’t miss out on this spectacular evening.

Spring Flowering Bulbs

Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest.

If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs.

Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.

Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus).

Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out.

Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread.

Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Dorset Team Christmas Fair: Wimborne The Etsy Made Local: Dorset Team Christmas Fair will be heading to Wimborne on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December. This two-day event will feature some of the best makers, designers, vintage sellers and craft suppliers in Dorset. There will be 60 stallholders on each of the days so plenty to see and a great place to pick up some really unique gifts that you won’t find on the high street! New Forest Ponies

When you visit The New Forest there are a group of about 5,000 locals that you can’t but help noticing. They have been hanging around for about 2,000 years and what they don’t know about the forest is not worth knowing. We are talking about the wonderful New Forest Ponies of course!

All of the ponies found in the forest are wild in the sense they can roam freely but in fact they are owned by New Forest Commoners.

The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest). Think of the New Forest as one large farm!

If you have ever wondered why the grass is so neat and tidy here in the New Forest it is thanks to our ponies and cows! In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford

warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest.

Each year, the ponies are rounded up in what are called drifts. Over thirty of these drifts take place during the summer and autumn each year giving the commoners a chance to check the health of their animals and wean and handle the foals..

You will find New Forest ponies dotted all around our National Park. With around 5,000 of them, it won’t be too long until you spot one. There is plenty of nutritious food available for the ponies and you will often find them grazing across the open moorland in small groups.

You may see some of our ponies have silver collars on them. When the ponies are rounded up as part of the drift, some of them have these reflective collars put on them to help make them more visible at night time. However, not all of them are caught and some are good at losing them! If you are driving at night and see a reflective collar on a dark road then take it as an indication that there are animals about, some of which you may not be able to see so easily, so please drive with caution.

Naturally good...

This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese.

The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.

MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c

 First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized







florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce.

To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste.

Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered.

Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
