Beryl Bikes for Bournemouth & Poole as Bike Share operator announced for Spring 2019 Bournemouth Borough Council and Borough of Poole Council have partnered with preferred operator Beryl to deliver an innovative Bike Share scheme across the conurbation.

The Councils and Beryl have partnered for a five-year contract to provide Bike Share across Bournemouth and Poole. The distinctive emerald green bikes will soon be a familiar sight on the streets and will be available for instant hire via the Beryl App. The App tracks the GPS location of the bike allowing users to easily access and unlock any Beryl bike simply using a smartphone.

The scheme will be launched in spring/summer 2019, with an initial 50 brand new bikes conveniently distributed for use at key destinations including rail and bus stations, town centre shopping areas and tourist attractions.

The gradual roll out of bikes will eventually increase to around 1,000 bikes by the summer months, available for instant hire. The Beryl bikes have three speed gears and a step through design, with fully adjustable handlebars and seats for a wide range of riders, from 4’11” to 6’5”.

The App can be downloaded on the Apple app store for iPhone, and the Google Play Store for Android users.

Riders can choose to pay each time they cycle, or take up an annual membership.

Users will be informed of the location of ‘Beryl Bays’, the preferred parking locations to leave the bikes.

However, the scheme is designed with flexibility in mind and will allow users to park the bikes elsewhere, provided they are safely within the scheme area.

Operators will keep track of all the bikes and will “rebalance” them as required to maximise availability.

Beryl has experience in bike share innovation, having been a lighting and technology partner to Transport for London bike share, and providing lights to the bike hire schemes in New York, Montreal and Glasgow.

The British company already operates two corporate dockless bike share schemes in London and is accredited with Bikeplus, which is the agreed standard of Best Practice for the industry.

We will be calling on our experience working with world-class bike share schemes, such as those in London and New York, to provide the best service possible in Bournemouth and Poole.”

Councillor Mike Greene, Cabinet Member for Transport, Cleansing and Waste for Bournemouth Borough Council said: “I am delighted that we are partnering with Beryl to deliver an innovative Bike Share solution for our conurbation. The scheme will be a convenient, flexible and affordable option for both residents and visitors to our area.”

Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation for Borough of Poole stated: “I am looking forward to trying the Beryl bikes and am certain that the ability to hop on and off will prove attractive in encouraging more people to take up cycling.”

There is no initial or ongoing cost to the Councils and Beryl will be responsible for supplying the bikes plus associated equipment as well as management and maintenance of the service. Beryl will also be investing in local cycling infrastructure in the area to ensure maximum efficiency for those riding.

Future developments include the introduction of a fleet of electric bikes for hire and potential expansion of the scheme into Christchurch. Businesses will also be offered the use of shared electric cargo bikes to assist with local deliveries and help cut both carbon emissions and congestion.

B. E. A. F. – Bournemouth’s Fringe Festival Returns in May From Saturday 4th to Sunday 12th May Bournemouth’s largest independent arts and cultural festival, B. E. A. F. (Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe), returns to celebrate and showcase the work of Bournemouth’s vibrant, home-grown creative community. Running for the third time since 2015, B. E. A. F. presents exhibitions, theatre productions, concerts, comedy, cabaret, dance and film screenings outdoors, in galleries, cafés, bars and other unexpected locations across town, with a focus on the area in and around Boscombe.

The opening weekend on Sat 4th and Sun 5th May will see exhibitions open in various locations.

Performances and workshops will take place at the Bournemouth Natural Science Society, and the B. E. A. F. Film Festival will be hosted at the Shelley Theatre, featuring a selection of short films and the famous 1929 silent film, Man with a Movie Camera, celebrating 90 years since it was first screened, accompanied with a new live score from The Cabinet of Living Cinema.

The B. E. A. F. Street Festival will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, bringing arts onto the precinct in Boscombe, including the opening of the iconic police box as the Boscombe Centre for Contemporary Arts, curated by artist Stuart

Semple. Music and performances, exhibitions, workshops and a massive floor mural will be just some of the activities taking place in Boscombe that day. Further attractions will be life-sized 2D characters by local artist Jake Trickett populating Boscombe High Street (image above) and Ashley Peevor’s Grass Man roaming the streets.

The festival will draw to a close at the second weekend with events at Churchill Gardens.

“Bournemouth offers a broad cultural programme in the town centre, but we want to turn the spotlight onto our local communities and show how many talented and internationally recognised artists live and work right here, and how beneficial arts and culture are for businesses, community spirit and wellbeing in the area. The festival is an opportunity to showcase new work created by our amazing creative community, whilst getting more local people and businesses involved in the arts,” says B. E. A. F. Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

Species of the month Can you remember the last time you saw a hedgehog? Or a robin? Did you used to see them, but perhaps not recently? These are the kinds of questions that we, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), need the answers to.

And we’d like the public to help us.

In 2015 DWT started a citizen science project, ‘Species of the Month’ – asking the public to let us know when they’ve seen a certain species for each month of the year. Since, not only have thousands of records flown in, but so have your anecdotes about wildlife experiences, with many of you sharing your delight from a regular or occasional wildlife visitor in your local patch or garden.

Recording and looking for both rare and common wildlife allows conservationists to monitor peaks and declines in wildlife populations. Something that’s in abundance now, might not be in 5 years’ time and these records could help identify trends to understand why this has happened.

Wildlife also doesn’t recognise boundaries – it goes anywhere there is habitat and food, so recording what’s in your garden or local green spaces is just as important as conservation teams recording which species are on nature reserves.

So, this new year, can you ‘look out’ for wildlife? Past species we’ve been interested in finding out more about include the easily identifiable robin, brimstone, house sparrow and hedgehog. If it’s something a little rarer, we’ll give you all the information you need to be able to identify it. In March we’re looking for the bee-fly pollinator, to kick start our Get Dorset Buzzing campaign!

Report urges retirees to register LPAs to avoid ‘later-life financial crisis’ A new report suggests that four-fifths of retirees who are taking advantage of pension freedoms may face a ‘later-life financial crisis’.

According to a report from Zurich, the risk – estimated to affect 345,000 retirees – stems from their lack of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), potentially hindering them from obtaining financial help should they become ill or lose mental capacity. Without providing a family member or trusted friend with the legal authority to make this kind of decision, the Courts would have to become involved should the individual no longer be able to make decisions themselves.

Commenting on the findings of the report Mr Skilton of Dorset & Wight Wills highlighted the important purpose which LPA’s serve in later life decision making, particularly since the pension freedoms were introduced.

He said: “Registering an LPA has become even more important since the pension reforms.

Thousands of people are now making complex decisions on their pension into old age, when the risk of developing a sudden illness or condition such as dementia increases.

“Despite this, many are unprepared for a sudden health shock or a decline in their mental abilities. The time to set up an LPA is well before you need it, and pension providers should be highlighting this to their customers.

“With more and more people moving into drawdown, this is creating a ticking time bomb that could leave thousands of people facing a potential later-life financial crisis. It is vital that people plan for a time when managing their pension might become hard, or even impossible, and speaking to Dorset and Wight Wills is one of the best ways to do this.”

The Flying Scotsman @ Swanage Railway The most famous steam locomotive in the world, Flying Scotsman, is due to visit the Swanage Railway and be reunited with a rare Devon Belle Pullman observation carriage for the first time in almost 50 years. Between 1969 and 1972 Flying Scotsman ran with the Devon Belle Car 14 during a tour of the US. The company running the tour went bankrupt and Flying Scotsman was returned home but the Pullman observation carriage remained in the US. Flying Scotsman will

Nissan LEAF 3.Zero models power in to Westover Nissan Following the sales success of Nissan LEAF electric vehicle in 2018, with motor dealership Westover Nissan witnessing almost 55 new car sales, the Westover Group is pleased to announce that its order books for the Nissan LEAF 3.Zero models are now open at both its Bournemouth and Salisbury locations, with first deliveries to the showrooms on the 19 plate taking place in May.

Both feature an eight inch touchscreen infotainment system, the e-pedal function with regenerative braking and the ProPILOT driver assistance technology.

New body colours and two-tone colour combinations are also available.

The Leaf 3.Zero e+ Limited Edition, of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe, features a high output capable of delivering 160kW (217 PS) of power and is equipped with a 62kWh capacity battery which will deliver a driving range of up to 239 miles, a 40 per cent range increase over the standard model. The new high-powered battery contains 288 cells compared to 192 cells found in the 40kWh Leaf 3.Zero model. This more powerful battery means acceleration from 50mph to 75mph is almost 13 per cent quicker on this limited edition. Top speed has also increased by up to 10 per cent allowing 97mph.

There’s.nothing.quite.like.sowing.seeds.and. the.thrill.of.watching.those.fi.rst.ti.ny.seedlings. appearing.just.a.week.or.two.later...Weather. permitti ..ng.the.soil.should.be.warm.enough. to.be.sowing.outdoors.in.March...Your.new. seedlings.will.need.all.the.help.that.you.can. give.them.if.they.are.to.fl.ourish.so.don’t. forget.the.weeding.and.pest.control.too!

Jobs for March :-

• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough.

• Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!)

• Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in.

• Plant first early potatoes later in the month.

• Keep on top of the weeding and pest control.

• Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge.

Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will

help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest.

Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks.

As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred.

Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil.

Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears

Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c.

2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump.

3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture.

4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions).

5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath).

6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish).

7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight.

8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized.

9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
