With an ever changing weather forecast, we were a bit uncertain about what we might be able to do, but as it turned out we were very fortunate and able to get out and about most days. it is always fun to explore new areas or revisit places you remember from previous trips.

First World War Memorial at All Saints Church, Southbourne

Private Leonard W. J. Maisey

Leonard Maisey was the son of John and Mary Maisey of 23 Roy Street, Palmerston North, Wellington, New Zealand and the husband of Kate (Kitty) Maisey (nee Langridge) of Pokesdown, Bournemouth. Before the outbreak of war Leonard worked as a plumber while thousands of miles away in England his future wife was a domestic servant to the Neale family who lived at 36 Beaufort Road, Southbourne.

When Britain Declared war on August 4th 1914, New Zealanders rushed to enlist in support of ‘Mother England’. Leonard Maisey enlisted as a sapper in the 2nd (Ruahine) Company, 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) Engineers. As part of the 14th Reinforcement NZEF he embarked for war on June 26th 1916.

The 14th NZEF Reinforcements landed at Devonport on August 22nd, 1916 and the new Zealanders in their ‘lemon squeezer’ hats made an immediate impression ...‘tall young men in khaki, with queer bunched-up hats with a line of red in their puggaree’...‘These New Zealanders, whose complexions are as bright as the red in their hats, their average size is more than equal to that of the average Highlander or Australian’1.

The Engineers embarked on a 9 week training course led by the Royal Engineer Station in Christchurch.

The men camped along the banks of the river Stour to practise bridge building and learnt trench skills including mining, wiring, construction and demolition on St. Catherine’s Hill. As the weather cooled, the camp in Christchurch was abandoned for billets in Boscombe where the sappers, when not in France, were to remain until the end of the war. They were well looked after by Bournemouth townspeople.

‘All municipal resources in the way of sports grounds, baths and parks, existing in Christchurch, Bournemouth, or Boscombe, were thrown open to them unreservedly, while the extreme kindness of the private citizens to the New Zealand boys could not possibly have been surpassed’.2

By November 1916 the men of the 14th reinforcements were ready to join the New Zealand Division on the

New Zealand troops embark for Europe WW1 Western Front. Leonard and the 14th reinforcements joined the Division in Belgium fighting in major battles at Messines, Brookseinde Ridge and Passchendaele throughout the rest of 1916 and 1917.

Sometime during this period, perhaps when home on leave, Leonard and Kitty met, fell in love and, with the urgency of war and a call back to the front, they married at Christchurch in September 1917.

In France, 1918, Leonard faced the German Spring Offensive. The enemy fought with a burst of renewed vigour but were blunted by the men of the New Zealand Division. The allies ‘March to Victory’ had begun and the 2nd Battle of Bapaume – an area on the Somme, occupied by German troops since the 1916 – started on August 21st. Private Leonard W J Maisey was killed in that battle on August 31st, 1918, aged 23.

It was seventy-two days before the armistice; Leonard and Kitty had been married for just eleven months.

Meet the Cleaning Champion Appointed to Keep Bournemouth’s Streets Clean Aiming to enhance the look of the town centre, Ricky Smith has been appointed to the Bournemouth Town Centre Business Improvement District’s (BID) new cleaning service.

Taking to the streets of Bournemouth’s town centre with the tools of his trade, over the last four months Ricky Smith has been working diligently to keep the area clean and tidy. With cleaning cart, gloves and broom in hand, Ricky is the face of a new rapid response cleaning service being delivered by the Bournemouth Town Centre BID. Representing the interests of the Bournemouth business community, Ricky is helping to ensure that the town centre is clean, litter free and most of all a welcoming place for visitors and locals. Funded by the Town Centre BID, Ricky will be providing a service in addition to that provided by the local council. Ricky works five days a week including weekends. He will be placing a special focus on doorways and alleyways, where rubbish has often been allowed to build up.

Ricky Smith said: “I’m really passionate about Bournemouth’s beautiful town centre and I’m pleased to be playing a role in keeping the area pristine and attractive for visitors. With a host of summer events on the way, you are sure to see me out and about dealing with the influx of tourists and the inevitable increase in litter.’’

Summer wildlife At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start…

At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars!

Nuffield Health launches new diagnostic cardiac service Self-referral cardiac assessment service now available to Dorset residents.

Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has launched a new ‘much-needed’ cardiac assessment service, which has the facilities to identify undiagnosed heart conditions.

Nuffield Health’s new cardiac assessment service launched this month at the Bournemouth hospital and is available to all.

The facility will provide a thorough look at an individual’s heart using state-of-the-art machinery to help detect undiagnosed heart conditions. The assessment service is aimed at those who might be worried about genetic conditions or are interested in receiving a health assessment of their heart.

Suneel Talwar, Cardiologist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth, said: “This is a muchneeded facility as some heart conditions do not present with symptoms. Regardless of

your age or physical capabilities, it may be beneficial to get your heart health checked as many conditions can go undiagnosed until it’s too late.

“If there are cases of heart issues in your family, it may be beneficial to seek a health assessment sooner rather than later so that if there are early signs of a heart condition we can give you the medical guidance needed in order to lead a healthy life.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van The isle of Anglesey off the north coast of Wales. Many a good holiday was spent there as a child, so you can only imagine Nellie’s excitement when Stephen’s sister and Dad booked a week there for all of us last month. Driving towards our destination, Nellie was full of nostalgia and fond memories of times gone by.

Betws-y-Coed where we met friends years and years ago, Swallow Falls, the low hanging clouds over the mountains, Llyn (Lake) Ogwen and finally we arrived at the shallow tidal waters of the famous Menai Straits which separates Anglesey from the mainland. Nellie danced across the Bridge and there we were on the island. Alan, Stephen’s father is a member of the prestigious “Holiday Property Bond” and we were booked into wonderful cottages overlooking the rolling green golf course at Henllys near Beaumaris, with magnificent views of Snowdonia in the background. Idyllic.

Henllys used to be a Franciscan Friary and there is a quiet spot with statues, trees and greenery in commemoration of this. The rest of the magnificent house and grounds now provide stylish Enjoying a “rib-roaring” boat trip to Puffin Island

Nellie enjoys the secluded coves cottages and apartments for those who are investors within the scheme. Nellie was thrilled.

Being on a golf course was a great excuse for Stephen to bring out those dusty clubs! It is a while since he has played (must be all that responsibility and hard work he is having to do), so Nellie persuaded him to have a go. Off he went, in a buggy of course, with his uncle David. The were both in complete contentment as they swung those clubs and drove off to find those balls. Uncle David, who does play much more often, shot a birdie (We did explain to Nellie that no birds were hurt in this action…) on hole number 15 and Stephen, well he did not lose ALL of his balls (now now Nellie) and was in fact very happy with his game. Both came back with big smiles and Uncle David unfortunately, also with sore knees. Nellie totally understands!

Penmon Point was a favourite of ours in the past. Dad fishing off the rocks, while Mum worried about Sue and I falling on the rocks with waves crashing around us as we ran across to see if Dad had caught anything. The coastline seemed very different this time but maybe it was

29 my imagination? After all, dare I say it is nearly 40 years since we were regularly there! Oh my word how time flies. Puffin Island just off the shore “in those days” was literally that, full of puffins! Now there are around 200 pairs apparently, which is better as they had dwindled down to much less. The good news is that they are on there way up again.

Knowing this, we decided to take a boat out to see for ourselves. There are many boats that go out from Beaumaris. We chose a Rib Ride with Seacoast Safaris!

Nellie likes excitement and she chose well as Hayden loved it! The young man piloting was very proficient and literally took us for a spin. As a member of RNLI he was well trained and we felt totally safe as he spun the boat in circles before speeding up and chasing the ebbing tide out to Puffin Island. What a thrill! We saw grey seals bobbing up and down, guillemots, kittiwakes, cormorants, razorbills, eider ducks and ONE puffin!

The skipper steered us carefully into the cave, smiling while telling us it was a good idea to put our hoods up! Those birds have no manners… It was a great trip and thoroughly recommended if you are ever on Anglesey.

Beaches are another must on the island.

As a child ‘Me and Dad’ picked winkles

off the rocks at Trearddur Bay and cooked them to eat many a good night.

Trearddur Bay had been hit by a bad storm ten years ago and now has a smart new walkway right across the sands.

Again, a sign of changing times.

Alan and Rachel, Stephen’s dad and sister, love walking and were out each morning by 8am to take in the sites with plenty to see over the 276 square miles that the island occupies. Nellie let us rest, though I think she would have liked to skip along the cliff tops. We did take a walk along the coastal path from Lligwy Beach to Moelfre on a wonderfully sunny day. The ice-cream and coffee were a welcome find at Moelfre before setting off back again to Lligwy beach for a picnic lunch and an afternoon snooze. Nellie likes those!

Nellie really enjoyed her stay at Henllys with its full-sized snooker table, huge outdoor chess set, bar billiards, air hockey, table tennis, sauna, steam bath and swimming pool. We certainly were not short of entertainment!

The drive home was interesting as you will hear about soon… Anglesey is a wonderful island and if you have never visited there are scores of things to do.

SPOTTED… FIFA MASCOT IN POOLE & BOURNEMOUTH Children and adults from across Bournemouth and Poole were treated to a surprise visit from the official FIFA World Cup mascot, Zabivaka.

The Russian grey wolf jetted into Dorset last month ahead of the tournament kicking off. He spent the week with Poole’s famous boat builder, Sunseeker, a Tier One sponsor of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

While in Poole, he didn’t miss the opportunity of going out on the water. He was spotted in Poole Harbour on board a Sunseeker yacht taking in the sights of Old Harry Rocks and Brownsea Island.

As part of his visit, Zabivaka met with Sunseeker staff, he opened the Poole Harbour Boat Show alongside the Ocean Brothers and visited several schools meeting with children and teachers to educate them all about the FIFA World Cup and the countries taking part.

Sunseeker’s Marketing Manager, Bryan Jones said: “It has been a brilliant opportunity for Sunseeker to secure Zabivaka so close to the FIFA World Cup kicking off. He had a very busy week while he was here, and we have received fantastic feedback from all who met him.”

Gardening Tips

a beginner’s

GUIDE Runner Beans

It’s not too late to plant runner beans.

My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost.

For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well.

Push a bean into a small pot of multi purpose compost and keep it moist.

Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a

row of crossed canes or even netting for them to grow up. They could even be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel—add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much.

Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set.

Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!

Plant of the month Gerberas

It’s hard not to be filled with a sense of joy upon seeing a Gerbera. These bright and cheerful flowers come in a variety of vibrant colours: orange, yellow, pink, red and white and it’s no surprise that they are the fifth most cut flower in the world.

Gerberas are in the Asteraceae family (also known as the Daisy Family) and are native to Africa, South America and Asia.

When displaying Gerberas in your house, keep in mind they turn their heads towards the light so be careful about putting them near bright light. They have very long vase lives so make sure to keep their water topped up so you can see their beautiful colours for longer.

The Crumbs Project Gets The Royal Treatment Earlier this month, HRH The Prince of Wales kindly hosted a Reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Garfield Weston Foundation. Local Bournemouth based charity; The Crumbs Project was amongst 150 charities, which attended the event.

The foundation supports a wide range of charities across the country, from national institutions to small local community organisations like The Crumbs Project. Based at its training facility in Bournemouth, Crumbs provides practical training for adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues and stabilized addictions, supporting trainees into employment.

Crumbs for many years, providing valuable funding for staff and equipment. It has been a privilege to attend this celebration at this truly magnificent setting.�
