Tell me all about it! Local celebrity of the month... Just a few weeks ago Steph Wyatt won the title of Miss Dorset! Steph was born and bred in Poole and at the young age of 17, this is quite an achievement. I met up with Steph last week to talk to her about being a ‘celebrity’. I asked if she had always wanted to be a beauty Queen and she told me, “It is every girl’s dream to be in a pageant and I feel very lucky to be able to enter the competition.” Steph has always been very close to her Dad and she told me on her first Cat Walk, her Dad had very proud tears pouring down his face. “Seeing him made my lips quiver” she told me, “making it difficult to smile!” “He has always been there for me and I have always been with him.” Steph continued, smiling. Being a beauty star is not as easy as it looks as there are many rounds that each girl goes through to eventually end with just one winner. In her next pageant for Miss England, which Steph is really looking forward to, she will need to pass a “Popularity Round”, a “Sports Woman” round where each girl takes part in a boot camp, a “Beach Beauty” round and even an “Eco” round where Steph will have to make her own dress from recycled materials! Steph’s ultimate goal is to travel the world helping others with projects. She feels she can be “a voice for others” and by doing that she can change things for the better. Right now Steph
Miss Dorset 2016, Steph Wyatt has also started a Law Degree, so she is going to be more than busy! There were 22 girls who entered The Miss Dorset competition, but in her next pageant for Miss England, being held in Southport, there will have been 22,000 girls all gunning for the prestigious title. Down to 50 girls in the final, Steph would like to be in the top 15. I believe she has every chance of that. As Miss Dorset, Steph is looking for sponsorship to help with her ambitions. Back to the Future... Hello Southbourne, To continue my very own journey of “Back to the Future” recalling a few of my memories over the past six decades, at my home here at Southbourne on Sea. It’s been sixty one years since I first came to a very cloudy Southbourne July 1953 and went to the cinema at Fishermans Walk, hoping fingers crossed for a change in the weather, thankfully there was! So this month I thought that I would walk the very same route that I took with my future wife Mary after we left the “Embassy” cinema in Fishermans walk (now a Co-op supermarket)! When we came out of the cinema the sun was out and not a cloud in the sky, so we decided to have a walk through Fishermans Walk then have a stroll along the beach to Boscombe Pier. As we came to the bandstand we found that there was a very large crowd of locals and holiday makers listening to the Salvation Army band, we sat on the grass for a while before making our way to the gardens, which over the years really hasn’t changed a great deal, apart from the pond which then was well stocked with fish also a few ducks and a few children with their little fishing nets hoping to catch a few tiddlers. As we came out of the gardens we were just about ready for a cup of tea, only a few yards away were tea rooms, so we sat outside and had afternoon tea enjoying lovely view, I believe the name of the tea rooms was “Crawfords” in its place now stands “The Commodore Hotel”! Today as I stood outside the hotel looking across a very busy and noisy Overcliff Drive remembering the time when there were no buildings at all on the clifftop and the
only noise was the laughter and screams of children splashing each other in the huge paddling pool that was once on the clifftop, it was replaced by the swing park and playing area that we have today. After Mary and I had finished our tea and cakes we went down to the beach and walked towards the pier at Boscombe, of course we had to have a little paddle on the way. When we eventually arrived at the pier we found that it was being restored after it had been put out of commission during the second world war, as were all the piers throughout the UK in case of invasion by the Germans (another story). We then got ourselves a Walls ice cream, and sat to watch the children screaming and laughing at the Punch and Judy show and enjoying a donkey ride along the beach, sadly once again long gone. Time was getting on so we decided to walk up Sea Road passing the onetime “Neptune Bar” to get a trolly bus back to Southbourne, little aware that in a few years time Mary and I would marry, have a family, and spend the rest of our lives in Bournemouth. Next month I shall continue my journey “Back to the Future” by taking a walk from Pokesdown railway station where in 1960 I first stepped off a train to start a new life in Bournemouth. I shall walk along Seabourne Road to Southbourne Grove and recount some of the changes that I can recall from the 1960s / 1970s. To be continued... “Uncle” Ron Hands

Talking about Wildlife... Marine Giants in Dorset There is nothing more delightful than catching a glimpse of a dolphin family as they splash through the waves off our beautiful coastline. If you’re in luck, you may see either common or bottlenose dolphins, but how many people know that our local seas are also home to other large marine species such as white-beaked dolphins, basking and porbeagle sharks, sunfish and minke whales? Last summer, huge numbers of barrel jellyfish caused a stir, and this coincided with a very rare sighting of a leatherback turtle, eating one of the jellyfish, in Lyme Bay. Loggerhead turtles have also been spotted, as well as the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtle. Turtles normally inhabit tropical seas but sometimes get caught in strong ocean currents, bringing them into colder waters that can kill them. Stranded turtles should never be returned to the sea. Any turtle sightings, dead or alive, should be reported immediately to Dorset Wildlife Trust by phone or social media. There is also disappointing news is that these amazing creatures are threatened

by damaging activities, and it is vital that measures are put in place to protect their environment and allow them to thrive. The Wildlife Trusts and other conservation organisations are calling on the government to act to create protected areas. Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying basic 20% tax? If you’ve just answered yes, then you’re one of 4.1million couples due a free £212 a year, but the likelihood is you’re in the 80% who haven’t claimed it, so I’m going to tell you how. This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it, and am starting to make a breakthrough. To inspire you, here’s just a few of the scores of recent tweets I’ve got on it. TingTing: @MartinSLewis THANK YOU! Just signed up for marriage allowance, £212 in our pocket. DO IT PEEPS ... it’s quick and simple to do! Matty: @MartinSLewis Thank you for letting us know about the Marriage Tax Allowance. Only took 2 minutes to complete and £212 saved per year. Q. Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If you’ve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than £10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under £42,385. You both must be under 80 (then there’s another tax break). Don’t overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as “I’m a volunteer”, “I only work part time”, “I don’t work”. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesn’t pay income tax? If you are, you count – simple as that. Q. How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance – that’s the amount you can earn tax-free – to their partner. Imagine Tyrone earns £10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for £1,060 of his taxfree allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So that’s £1,060 of earnings she would’ve paid tax on at 20% that’s now tax free. As 20% of £1,060 is £212, that’s your gain.
Q. How do you claim it? It’s a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/ marriage-allowance or call 0300 200 3300. You’ll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, it’s the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up – people do it the other way round and then wonder why they’re rejected. Q. Do I get it every year? Yes, it’s done via a change in your tax code that remains, so it’s £212 a year gain every year and once you’ve applied it’s done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them. Q. Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you can’t go back further than that. Q. What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn’t matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assessment bill. Q. What if I’m a non-taxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. @MoneySavingExpert

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Now you all know that Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan, is getting on a bit. She has aches and pains from time to time and last month her “ticker” just wouldn’t get started. A new pace maker (alias battery), was called in, the surgeons got to work (otherwise known as Longham Motor Engineers) and Nellie is now able to take us out again. Thank goodness! Such a relief. Well, my Dad is 82 years old and still goes match fishing, lugging his gear up and down the banks, giving the younger men a good run for their money. Nellie is taking a leaf out of his book. In January this year Dad had his second knee operation - We now call him the Bionic Man. When I rang him all excited about us all going back to Santorini in Greece, you can imagine that he hesitated somewhat. My Mum was more than concerned. Taking after my Dad and not wanting to give

up on the idea, I kept ringing to see how he was doing. I knew Dad was determined to make it. Just like Nellie, who is afterall over 200,000 km’s old, I believe that the power of the mind as well as good medical care and good nutrition (diesel in Nellie’s case...) can overcome a lot. Santorini was a great holiday and one of the highlights was a trip to the live volcano. I never thought Dad would make it, but he did! This is what Dad wrote to his surgeon recently, who requested photos for his website... “On the 11th January 2016 I had a total knee replacement to my left leg which was carried out by Mr H Sharma. I was in hospital for 5 days. (My right knee was replaced some 7 or 8 years ago.) In late February I decided I was fit enough to go on the Family holiday due to commence on 2nd April 2016 to the Greek Island of Santorini. On the 2nd day of this holiday we booked a full day boat trip which would take us out to the various islands. Our first stop

was a Volcanic one which entailed a 1,500 meter ascent over black volcanic rock and cinders, about 2 hours there and back. The family did not expect me to attempt this, but I said if I have to turn back, I will. However, I made it to the summit and back, just some 81 days after the operation! And no after effects! To say how very grateful I am to Mr Sharma is an understatement!” Stan Outlaw.... Dad! So just like my Dad (who I am very proud of), Nellie will continue to take us out, overcoming whatever ailments. We hope she inspires you to do the same. Getting out and about in the fresh air is a great therapy. On that note, last month Nellie took us all the way to “The Reptile Centre” near Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Oh boy those snakes sent shivers down Nellie’s chassis and the burping toads certainly made her chuckle. At the centre you can discover more about British reptiles and amphibians and how they are being conserved in the New Forest. They have in fact the only collection of all the native lizards, snakes, frogs and toads, including

Britain’s only venomous snake - the adder - and rarest lizard - the sand lizard. It is a great place for adults and children to wander around, observe and learn and even take a picnic on the forest trail. Nellie, with her ‘new ticker’ thoroughly enjoyed driving there, through our wonderful terrain of fields and trees surrounded by gorgeous horses and ponies. Hayden loved taking photographs en route as we slowly motored along. Oh those lazy sunny days, don’t we just love ‘em! The coffee on arrival from Nellie’s whistling kettle was just what I needed. So yes, Nellie has had a busy month. There are lots of activities in July and August so we will not be bored and Nellie will have no time to rest, that is for sure! Where will she take us next…? Top Five must see attractions at the 2016 Show The 2016 New Forest and Hampshire County Show is taking place on 26th, 27th and 28th July at New Park Brockenhurst. In order to help you plan your day and make the most of your time at the Show we have put together a list of the top five must see attractions. Metropolitan Mounted Police We are delighted to be welcoming the Metropolitan Mounted Police to the Show for the first time this year as the main ring attraction. They will be wowing the crowds with their fun, fast moving Activity Ride each day in the Hoburne East Ring. Visitors will witness riders removing their saddles and jackets whilst their horses clear a selection of bush jumps. Their breath-taking performance also involves horses jumping through rings of fire and through large paper walls. Don’t miss their incredible performance at the Show. 2. Guinness World Record Attempt We are inviting visitors to join in with our daily attempt to break the world record for the ‘Most Wellington Boots Thrown Simultaneously’. The current record stands at 348 which we will be hoping to break. Why not join us at 4.30pm each day in the Hoburne East Ring and be part of our exciting world record attempt. Joules are sponsoring the attempt and have kindly provided the wellington boots for us to use. We are pleased to confirm that all wellington boots will be donated to a chosen charity straight after the Show. 3. Family Fun Area This popular area of the showground dedicated to children provides all day entertainment for the whole family to
enjoy. Watch a fun-packed programme of entertainment including Circus workshops, Nasira Belly Dancers, the Sing Now Choir and much more. New for 2016 is the opportunity for children to take part in craft activities. 4. Sheep Show The Sheep Show is returning to New Park once again and always proves hugely popular with the crowds. The educational yet entertaining display provides visitors with lots of interesting information about the different breeds of sheep. Watch sheep shearing live in action and learn how wool is processed to create cosy woollen jumpers. Accompanied by humorous commentary, the Sheep Show has visitors returning to watch again and again. 5. Main Ring Attractions In addition to the fantastic Metropolitan Mounted Police, we have a timetable brimming with popular main ring attractions including the sixteen pairs of heavy horses who will be taking part in the World Famous Heavy Horse Musical Drive. International Show jumping will be taking place in the Hoburne East Ring which will see top riders from across the country compete in the International Trail and International Stairway. The Tractor Tug of War and The Grand Parade of Livestock will also be entertaining the crowds each day.

There can be few more delightful places to hold a festival than on Mudeford Quay Green and overlooking Christchurch Harbour. Well known for its family atmosphere the Mudeford Arts Festival is now in its ninth year and is a major local community event. There are over 65 craft and art stalls displaying a wide range of locally made goods and a variety of food outlets offering delights from roasts, vegetarian, pizzas, sandwiches, crepes, ice creams, coffee and cakes. The Ar t Exhibition and Craft Demonstration Marquee will be a hive
of activity with a diverse selection of art and crafts including printmaking, photography, ceramics, paintings and specially created children’s art. Craftspeople will be demonstrating their skills, watch a potter, wood turner, beader and flower arranger at work. Artists will be there to paint your portrait or even your pet if you bring a photograph. For the children there will be lots of art and fun activities organized by Mudeford Primary School - and look out for the puppeteer on Sunday. All Saints church will be offering tea and cakes nearby. And to top it off there will be a full programme of entertainment. Mostly made up of local artists and groups it includes Crescendi, a talented singing group, Polly Morris and her band, Ukele Jam Band, the Royal British Legion Christchurch band, Jans Gems belly dancers and lots, lots more.

On Your Plot Start them young
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into
the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.

‘Down by the Riverside’ The Lower Brass Quartet – part of Christchurch Vintage Brass – love playing ‘Down by the Riverside’, a swingy jazz number which perfectly suits tuba, trombone and euphonium. As it’s such a favourite, they chose a brilliantly sunny Spring day to take their instruments down to the river at Tuckton, to pose for a few photo shots. They did some playing too, as children playing nearby were curious to hear this mini brass band. In previous years Don has played in the Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall, London; but he was delighted to play on the river bank on Monday, enjoying the sunshine and lovely view of water,
boats and trees in blossom... just being very careful not to take that fatal step backwards! The Lower Brass Quartet now makes frequent appearances on the Vintage Brass platform when they perform in Southbourne, bringing jazz and swing to the programme and surprising the audience with those very low musical notes. Vintage Brass’s next concert will be on Saturday 22 October at Trinity Methodist Church, Southbourne. Watch out for the posters, flyers, and website:
