I wonder if the cold weather which we have been promised will be here by the time you read this? To date we have been really lucky with the mild climate.

Certainly, on New Year’s Day, which seems oh so far away now, we had a wonderful stroll at Durdle Door and then a walk back in time at Tyneham Village, all in bright sunshine and very mild temperatures for the time of year. You can read all about it in this month’s issue of your magazine. I do think it is important to get out in the fresh air when we can.

Hayden is going skiing with school in Italy, something none of us have done before, so I am sure he will really enjoy that. He is also busy with his Duke of Edinburgh Award, doing some volunteering work and has joined a running club with his friend. I wish I was that energetic! All in all, we have had a pretty good start to 2019. How about you?

Christchurch U3A Monday 11th February 2019 FANS AND SOCIAL HISTORY As mentioned previously, this talk looks at what these simple objects tell us about the history of time, and also about the history and manufacture of fans themselves.

Monday 11th March 2019 A SAGA OF SUNKEN SECRETS This is talk brings to life the remarkable and interesting life of the Second Lord Montague of Beaulieu. A ‘must’ for all those members and non-members interested In the local intrigues of the man himself.

All Monthly Meetings are held at Christchuch Baptist Church on Barrack Road. The meetings always start at 2pm, and all members and non-members are invited to attend. Refreshments are always served at the conclusion of each meeting. So why not come along for a worthwhile and interesting afternoon.

This month we feature the CHRISTCHURCH U3A SINGERS. A very large group of singers who meet every Monday morning at New Church Hall.

This year they held Christmas Celebration Concert at All Saints in Southbourne to a full house and appreciative audience. The concert embraced both bible and and poetry readings, as well as a full musical programme, in which the 60 strong choir gave a joyful rendering of the African American Spiritual ‘Go Tell it on the Mountain’. A wonderful way to end a memorable evening.

Talking about Wildlife...

Birds of a feather...

At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings.

It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing.

Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia.

So, why do birds flock? Well, why not!

Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy.

Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival.

Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to find food, so they need all the help they can get!

‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer.

About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000.

New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities.

Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson

reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. It was also a personal challenge for me – something to train for and a way of getting fitter and healthier.”

Laura Beavis, Wessex Cancer Trust’s events manager, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and we would love 2019 to be the biggest and best yet.”

Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with well-earned refreshments.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Tyneham Village on the Isle of Purbeck. Frequently described as a “ghost town” and you certainly feel that when you visit. Poor Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan who ‘retired’ earlier this year would have loved the walk back in time in this beautiful, serene, yet sad ambience.

In 1943 the Army took over the village, to use the land as their training ground, promising its long-established inhabitants that they could return after the war. That never happened and now still used as an army training ground with tanks and artillery flying by intermittently, the general public is allowed to visit at designated times and days of the year.

By chance we took a drive out to the Purbecks on New Years Day, and what a gorgeous day it was. Glorious sunshine, a wonderful crisp English winter’s day. Stephen, Hayden and I set off for Durdle Door to breathe in the “new air” of 2019 and gaze into the vast space beyond the cliff tops. Glistening turquoise blue water shimmering below us with swirling white clouds above us. What

There is a lot of information in the area a wonderful way to start the New Year. The gates at Durdle Door were closing earlier than usual, and I had seen the sign to Tyneham Village on the way. Having never been to the village it seemed a good idea to go and by sheer luck it was open to the public. I would suggest if you want to go, that you check the opening times as you really would not want to be disappointed. You can visit www. dorsetforyou.gov.uk/lulworth-rangewalks to check before you set off.

Many of the houses in this former vibrant village are dilapidated, with long lost roofs and broken walls which all adds to this ‘walk back in time’ and mystical feeling which enshrouds the whole area. Nothing bad happened there, except of course that all its inhabitants were taken from their homes and rehoused, to be told they could return. Maybe that is the sadness which hangs over these houses. They never saw their owners again. I believe there are still some inhabitants alive today, but most have regrettably passed away. The scene makes you stop and wonder at who

23 lived there, what were they like, what was life like in those days? Many questions pop up in your mind as you look in wonder. The atmosphere is very quiet and calm. Quite in contrast with the army vehicles, tanks and guns which practice their aim at the targets literally a stone’s throw away when the public are allowed no where near the village.

The School House and Church are still fully intact and now little museums to commemorate those who lived there. There are old black and white photos, memorabilia and reminders of our bygone days. Very special. The school is particularly a reminder of the changes which have taken place in the last 60 years. This was a place you did not backflash your elders or question them in any way. Cheekiness was frowned upon. Silence in the classroom was demanded. Yet it also seemed a happy place, one of learning and comradeship, a chance to read about the rest of the world, understand sums and get to know other boys and girls. Personally, I love old churches, and this was does not

The Old School House, Tyneham disappoint either. Idyllic. Set in its own gardens, it is a wonderful example of our many historic buildings. We are so lucky.

The village has been featured in the movies too, In 1985 it was used for the filming of Comrades, which depicts the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I have not seen that, have you? Then in 2006 the village was used as the setting for the climax of the comicthriller Angel’s Share by Mike Ripley which I have also not seen. Maybe I will have a look and see if I can find them.

I highly recommend a visit to this incredible walk back in time. For us it was a great way to start 2019!
