“It’s key people leave us feeling better” Every year around 23,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the Wessex area. A diagnosis can be a shock and have a huge impact on the entire family. That’s why Wessex Cancer Trust is committed to providing free emotional and practical support for anyone affected by cancer at its five support centres, one of which is in Bournemouth. During the first six months of 2019, the Centre saw 578 clients. Befriending, counselling, support groups and complementary therapies – such as aromatherapy, yoga, reflexology and Reiki are available for patients and their families. Children are welcome, as well as adults of any age, with any type of cancer and at any stage. Visitors can also find out more information about cancer and speak to others going through a similar journey. Elizabeth Lazell began visiting the Bournemouth cancer Support Centre after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She says: “I think I probably did the typical thing of putting a brave face on it and protecting those around me, but inside I felt emotionally, as well as physically, damaged. Wessex Cancer Trust was there for me. As soon as I walked into the Support Centre it made me cry with relief. It was comforting, kind and gentle. The light is wonderful and the layout makes you feel so calm. I talked with the Centre manager, Emma, as well as befrienders and others who were living with cancer. I had acupuncture and counselling. Some of the most valuable times for me were just sitting and having a cup of tea with others in the centre. The centre is empathetic about the emotional impacts of cancer and really helps people to feel they’re not alone.” Other client says: “In October 2017 I was told I had months to live. I’d been diagnosed with a very rare type of blood cancer which affects just 2,500 people in the UK every year. I was told there was no cure and felt shocked, confused and overwhelmed with fear. Because of the
rarity of the disease, I also felt incredibly alone. As soon as I stepped into the Bournemouth Support Centre I knew I could offload and share my darkest feelings – things I couldn’t say to family members or friends for fear of worrying them, and that I would be listened to without judgement. Miraculously, at one of my regular check-ups, I was told I was getting better. Coming face-to-face with death has, of course, changed me. I couldn’t have gotten through it without Wessex Cancer Trust. The support they provide is incredible and I’d go as far to say it’s an essential service. I’ve been told my cancer may come back, but I’ve made a decision to stay positive and keep relying on Wessex Cancer Trust. There’s nothing quite like them and I’m incredibly relieved and grateful they’re still besides me on my journey.” The centre manager, Emma Ormrod, says it’s key that people leave the centre feeling better: “We feel passionately that the Centre should be a haven for anyone living with cancer, where our clients can be themselves without the filtering we sometimes do around our family and friends. Our trained befrienders offer a sympathetic, nonjudgemental ear to anyone going through what can be a particularly difficult time of their lives. ” The Centre costs £121,000 per year to run. A counselling session costs £40 and a therapy is £37. The Centre relies on help from a number of volunteers, who between them provide around 2,400 hours of befriending time every year. Christchurch U3A News Let’s start off with some good news - the three committee positions of Venue Secretary, Treasurer, and Secretary have all been successfully filled for the coming year. These are three key positions that were vacated because the people holding them had faithfully served their time and felt the need to ‘move on’. A very big THANK YOU to all of you who volunteered to help out to fill these three very important positions within U3A. Welcome to your committee as we all look forward to a successful new season.
Thank you to all who have responded to the GET ON YOUR BIKE APPEAL - for donating over 30 ladies and gents bikes for others to use as well as yourself. The bikes have all been serviced and ready for use to members and their family. All we ask is that you make a small donation to a charity. This summer, the response has been very positive and encouraging. So if you are still considering ‘giving it a try’ then please contact Bud Thornley on 01202 421 025 for more help and advise, and even a taster Trial Run to see if going back to the bike is for you. Don’t forget we have a very flat promenade (August is limited for cyclists to use between 10am and after 6pm) and the New Forest in our ‘back garden’ with very many cycle tracks is safe and free from much traffic. Both are excellent for beginners and experienced cyclist alike. So why not give it a try?

Direct Cremation There is much talk in the press about the Direct Cremation option. But what does this mean exactly? It means that the cremation will take place without a funeral service, at a time decided by the Crematorium – this could be in the early morning, or late at night for example. Bournemouth Crematorium offers a Direct Cremation and is considered to be a more affordable option. Should you choose this option, it is worth considering the lack of funeral service, and how this could negatively effect loved ones, who wish to mourn. We recommend talking to loved ones about your wishes, so they understand your reasons for choosing a direct cremation when the time comes. Bournemouth Crematorium is introducing regular nonreligious memorial services, where everyone is welcome, but in particular, welcoming the family of loved ones who opted for a Direct Cremation and need time and space to mourn their passing.

Going Green... I have great respect for Sir David Attenborough. His recent campaign to make us all much more aware of our current planet problems and just how much we need to care for it, inspired me to do something about it. We are all individuals, and as a team of individuals working together, we can keep our environment safe and prevent unnecessary decay and destruction. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I really use. How many items do I possess, and use on a daily basis, that have plastic bottles? When you really look it is a minefield. We have become so used to plastic, we don’t even see it. It is quite shocking. Becoming overwhelmed usually means nothing gets done as it all seems too much, so it is best to look at the problem one step at a time. My plan in the next few months is to look at some everyday products that can be replaced by not only plastic free containers, but products which are actually BETTER for YOU too! I looked in the bathroom… and saw no end of shiny, colourful plastic bottles. Oh dear. Soap. Since when did we start purchasing soap in bottles? This is so easy to replace with good quality, wonderful smelling natural soaps. These soaps not only have enhancing properties for your skin, they do not at all harm the environment! I am particularly
fond of the lemongrass soap, but if you look on the website you will see many more. All “Friendly” soaps are Free from Palm Oil, Parabens, Sulphates, Triclosan, Phthalates and Cruelty, as well as being boxed in plastic free recycled (and recyclable) packaging. Another product (I had at least 3 different plastic bottles of) was shampoo! Again, there are some much more natural products, that leave you hair soft and shiny, are good for your scalp AND are not stored in plastic containers! There is one on the opposite page for you to see. I tried it and have been amazed by the results! Finally, deodorant. I have tried natural products in the past and been highly disappointed. This one on the following page is incredible. “Earth Conscious” deodorant is aluminium free, paraben free and contains no carcinogens or toxins allowing your body to perspire as nature intended. The packaging is PLASTIC FREE, recyclable and lightweight, making them perfect for travelling. Talking about Wildlife...
Reptiles: soaking up the sun in Dorset Like humans, reptiles love basking in the sun at this time of year. In Dorset we are lucky to have lowland heathland habitat to support all six British native reptile species. Reptiles are truly magnificent creatures, but they need a very specific habitat to thrive in and can be very sensitive to changes in their environment, which is why all reptile species are legally protected. You also need a license to handle and monitor them. As reptiles are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they bask in the sun to warm up, and hide away in the shade to cool down again. During the colder months they hibernate, but in the summer months, reptiles will be enjoying the sunshine and feasting on the delights the heath has to offer, with lizards preying on spiders and insects and snakes favouring small mammals. As with lots of wildlife species in Dorset, their survival and success is largely due to having well-managed habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Great Heath team work hard on our heaths to ensure there is sandy soil, low vegetation and not too many trees, to create a dry and warm habitat for reptiles. Sand Lizard

Explaining... Lasting Power of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document which legally enables one or more individuals you know and trust, your Attorneys, to have the Power to make decisions on your behalf if you lose Mental Capacity (capacity). Unlike a Will which deals with your estate when you are no longer here, an LPA deals with your Financial and Care decisions while you are alive but lack capacity. There are two types of LPA; a Property and Financial LPA, and a Health and Welfare LPA. Plan for the Future Contrary to beliefs like, “I would never need an LPA”, or “My next of kin will get the final say”, the reality is that everyone needs an LPA, regardless of age or current mental health status. A former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice said in 2007 when LPA’s were first introduced, “We all know how important it is to plan for the future. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place should be as common and natural as making a Will”. Less than 1% of the adult UK population has an LPA. However, 1 in 3 persons on average over the age of 65 in the UK develop dementia (Alzheimer’s Society), and every 90 seconds someone in the UK, is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (Headway). Four reasons why you should make and register both types of LPA. 1. Choice. You retain the choice of who to appoint as your Attorney’s and how they should act. If you lose capacity without an LPA in place the Court of Protection will have to appoint a Court Deputy to make decisions on your behalf. There is no guarantee this would be someone you would want and could even be a stranger such as a professional listed on the court panel.
2. Costs. For the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputyship the initial application fee is £385 plus all legal fees and ongoing annual fees payable to the court. All of which can run into thousands of pounds. However, to register each LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is only £82. 3. Time. To register an LPA with the OPG currently takes 8/10 weeks. A Deputyship application is more time consuming and can take as long as 9 months or more at a time when you desperately need some immediate help. 4. Instructions. LPA’s allow you to specify any instructions you may have for your Attorney’s. These are legally binding and your Attorney’s must follow them. The earlier an LPA is created and registered the better With an LPA document in place, you have peace of mind and full estate planning control. You would have specifically selected your Attorney’s and given them authority to make Financial and Care decisions on your behalf. LPA’s allow you to choose any Replacement Attorney’s and even a professional Attorney (such as a Trust Corporation), in case your primary Attorney’s are unable or unwilling to act. Finally, if you lack capacity but your Property and Financial LPA is not registered, your Attorney’s would not be able to access your bank accounts to pay for expenses such as care home fees until after they validate your LPA when it is officially stamped and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. If you hold an account jointly with someone else they will find themselves unable to operate the account until an LPA or Deputyship order is produced to the bank.

The Dorset Directories Camper Van We love Lulworth Cove, so when an aunt, uncle and my Mum and Dad came to stay Daichi, the Dorset Directories Campervan, decided it was a great place to go and whileaway the hours in good company. Despite this being a really popular place for tourists, there is a large extended car park and Daichi had no trouble finding a place to park his muscular body (really…?) ready for a spot of sunbathing (it is a good job he doesn’t know about speedos…), while we all walked down to the wonderful shoreline. The Jurassic coast here is quite magnificent. The beautiful almost enclosed cove is quite picturesque. I could not believe how crystal clear the sea was. Pure diamonds were glistening above a greeny-blue hue. Just gorgeous. I could have gazed at it for hours. The rock formations are also fascinating. The Luworth estate website tells us that these rocks are ‘folded’ which means “the sedimentary rocks no longer lay one

Stephen... dreaming of having a boat? on top of the other with the oldest at the bottom and the youngest on the top, but have been twisted so that the oldest rock is nearest to the sea and the youngest inland. Some of the beds have crumbled, twisted and sheared”. The result is a layer of different colours which is quite unique. The whole passage of time and evolving history can be seen at a glance. Back to today - there is a small pleasure boat here now, that takes people out to sea to bob along the shore and have some family fun on the water. Of course, for those who are more energetic you can take your own kayak, snorkelling equipment, dinghy, boat or paddle board. There is no end of amusement and when the weather is good, it is good for the spirit too. For those who like walking (as you know I like to sit with Daichi having coffee), there are stunning views from the cliff tops. We have, believe it or not, done this in the past but

29 today was a leisurely day. A crab sandwich and a coffee by the water was as energetic as we got. What I also love about this area, are the quaint houses and particularly the little sweet shop (ummm…) that used to home a whole family. It is called “The Dolls House” and dates back to the 19th Century. Here you can also have one of our tasty Dorset Cream Teas or of course any one of the delicious Purbeck icecreams. Maybe a walk would have been a good idea… Daichi keeps telling me I need to lose weight. Oh well, it’s just gotta be done. The Museum is also interesting and really informative, so for those who like to learn, this is the place to go. For those who like to shop, this is also the place to go. Lots of local crafts, paintings, fossils and other memorabilia to help remind you of your wonderful day by the sea. A great day was indeed had by all. Fortunately, Daichi didn’t get too sunburnt and with a toot of his horn and a skip in his step he danced us home.

On Your Plot Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter.
Jobs for August :-
• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!

Dorset Police Male Voice Choir Dorset Police Male Voice Choir, a registered charity, was established on 4th July 1995 celebrating its 21st Anniversary in 2016 when it was privileged to sing at the American Embassy in London as part of their Independence Day celebrations. Having started with just 6 members, the choir now numbers 50. From these small beginnings, the choir has grown, not only in numbers, but also in reputation, with the quality of its singing and breadth of repertoire. The choir aims to promote male voice singing whilst providing enjoyment for its members, supporters, audiences and the wider community. Whilst the choir has a number of retired police officers within its ranks, there are unfortunately no longer any serving police officers. Notwithstanding this situation, the choir is proud to represent Dorset Police both within and outside of the county. The choir based in Bournemouth, is led by their Musical Director Dr Jane Oakland along with the choir’s accompanists Lisa Timbs and Sue Stein. Jane Oakland has been the choir’s Musical
Director since 2009 following her return to the UK from the Netherlands, where she sang primarily with De Nederlandse Opera, but also with Nationale Reis Opera, Groot Omroep Koor and Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp. Since then, Jane has completed a PhD researching career stress for professional musicians. The Choir has performed throughout Dorset in many concert venues in recent years, having also performed widely in many parts of the UK and internationally in France, Guernsey, Jersey, Ireland and the United States of America. During the past 23 years the choir has helped to raise in excess of £300,000 for local, national and international charities and through its concerts, given numerous young local musicians the opportunity to perform, sometimes for the first time, in public. Short Story: THE RESCUE...
Golden sand whipped the walls of my watch tower as I stood like a sentry watching over the dark, blue, menacing sea. Binoculars to my eyes, I searched for anything that shouldn’t be there - at least not in this storm. Waves at least ten feet tall stood proud before toppling over and emitting an enormous sound as the water slammed into either more water or sand. White foam covered the first 10 metres out from the water’s edge where all the waves deposited their immense amount of energy. All of a sudden, a peachy white hand shot out from under the water then sank again (I almost missed it, it happened so fast). Tiny pricks stabbed at my exposed face as I ran to the water’s edge; the wind howled at me not go out, waves presenting their terrible force as they crashed in front of me. Dark clouds rumbled in the distance waiting to unleash their own fury. I was watching like a hawk, my eyes scanning the sea for any signs of that person. Suddenly, the same hand, however this time two, appeared for another split second and disappeared as a wave, the size of my watch tower, engulfed them. I had to rescue them. They needed me. But what if I couldn’t do it? What if I made the situation worse? Could I take that risk? Yes. I grabbed the almost 11-foot, luminous yellow board and sprinted into the ferocious beast… The icy water stole my breath as my chest seized up and my legs started to freeze. The board slammed the surface of my enemy and I leaped out of the heat sapping liquid onto it; my hands went numb as I paddled, ploughing them into the water trying to power through and get to my target as quick as I could. My body ached, my arms burned, I couldn’t take it much longer. But they needed me. CRASH! A wave smacked my board, it almost entirely threw me off, as white foam surrounded me: I saw another coming, but it hadn’t broken yet. The rounded tip pierced and glided through the up rise of water like nothing. Immediately, I saw what was behind that puny wave… the king wave of the set I had just driven through swelled up and began racing towards me like a miniature tsunami. Moments later and I could see the dangerous white foam starting to spread across the crest. Either it had to break before it reached me, or I had to reach it before it started to plunge down on top of me. The race was on. My arms screamed in pain, my chest struggled to keep the supply of oxygen I needed, and I could no longer feel my hands. Numbness was slowly creeping over my body, its tendrils reaching out to every part dispersing any feeling I had there. I hope I can make it, I thought, as the king wave and I flew towards each other. It had not broken. Yet. However, I could see the crest creating a lip (it was starting to pitch over itself). It was about to break. Every part of my body wanted to give up and let the monstrous wall of water take me down with it, but I couldn’t let that happen. As I approached the wave my board started to rise, and I could see the water rushing towards me. I grasped my board and elevated my body as my board and I almost started to go vertical. I closed my eyes; I could do no more but hope… A thunderous discharge of energy pounded my ears. Did I survive? I opened my eyes to see my fluorescent board and I still together: my body still in the rigid position I had assumed. I peered behind me and saw huge amounts of white foam where the gigantic wave had plummeted into the water. Better luck next time, Poseidon , I thought, as I chuckled to myself and started to paddle again. My board gently rose and fell as swells of anticipated waves flowed past me. My perceptions snapped into action as I searched for the person I had come all this way for. A quick glance and I saw them: floating and unmoving. They needed me. I rapidly paddled over and in a flash was in the water flipping over my board; I grabbed their arms and placed them over my now upside-down
rescue craft. Balancing my adrenaline filled muscles and trying to be as careful as I could, I heaved the board back over as I held the person’s arms so that they followed its motion. Eventually, they lay perpendicular on my own lifeline. I twisted their body so that they were parallel and I could get on – it’s imperative for me to be on the board too. I swam round and faced my own saviour (the board) towards the golden sands where waves, still deathly aggressive, slammed into the beach. With a mighty pull on the handles, I slid onto the rear of the craft before engaging in the foreboding journey back. As I madly paddled towards safety with an unconscious body in front of me, I could feel the swells getting larger. This was it. I had done the first segment, but could I do the same again? Numbness had already conquered any feeling I had left, except the ones I didn’t want. All I could feel was the torture I was putting myself through: burning arms, burning chest, burning blood vessels as they fought to supply any energy they could scrape for me. My wetsuit tugged at my weakening arms and my hands began to splash the saltwater onto my face. I couldn’t do it. I could see that ten metre stretch of deadly white spray as the board cut through my enemy. While paddling, I felt the back of my board start to rise – a wave. I shifted my body backwards so that we didn’t nosedive into the glacial like water. It was enough, at least for now. The person I had rescued and I rode the wave towards the shore like a soaring seagull, as we raced with the wave. The wave grew bigger, stronger and more powerful the further we rode it towards safety. It was getting too large though, I couldn’t put enough of my weight rearwards. The nose of my board began to sink, water and salt flew into my eyes. It stung. It was as if wasps were sending their stingers straight into my eyes. It happened too quickly. The board dug its nose into the water and the corpse-like body and I tumbled off. My arms were too weak, they felt like lead, I couldn’t grasp anything - the board nor the person. The salt blinded me and my body sank beneath the waves. Was this it? Was this the end? I couldn’t do it. But I had come all this way… no. They needed me. Whoever I had tried to save hadn’t been saved just yet. I can’t give up, not after all of this. Strength surged into my muscles, adrenaline fuelled my heart and my own lifeless body began to twitch as I fought the reapers wrath and began to swim to the surface. My head burst out the water, instantly looking around wildly for my board or the person. Something was floating (it was too dark to be my board). I swam as if I had suddenly become an Olympic swimmer. Although my muscles were on fire and my eyes felt like they were melting, I carried on. I wrapped my arm around that other body and frantically kicked my legs and swung my arm under the water. I was so close; another eight metres and I was there – the final length. All alarms were ringing in my body, reverberating around my skull, telling me to stop what I was doing and give up. That wasn’t an option. Waves piled on top of us making my back sear in pain. I couldn’t let go. Not now. As if by a miracle, my foot kicked something underneath me, it was sand! I charged out of the water like a bull, still carrying the person I had rescued. I had done it. Dripping wet and icy cold I dragged the person toward my watch tower. I could now truly look at them without the danger of a wave engulfing us. I placed her on a chair and, with a shaking hand, dialled 999. Without hesitation, the lady at the other end had sent us an ambulance and told me we were going to be alright. The emergency services were on their way. I had done my duty. I sat down next to the lady I had rescued, my entire body shivering as I did, and I gently took hold of her hand and closed my eyes.
