We are certainly not out of the woods yet, but if we stop listening to all the bad news and concentrate on what we can do and move forward together, taking ourselves off if we feel under the weather at all, then I believe we will get through quicker. There is a lot to celebrate at Dovey and Broom! Emma Dovey and Stacey Broom opened their dream salon in the heart of Romsey town four years ago. The name’s Bond...but not for much longer As he bids farewell to every actor’s dream role, we look at the legacy Daniel Craig’s James Bond has left behind. To equate his Bond experiment to the process of the average gymgoer, Daniel Craig is showered, moisturised, halfway towards being dressed and grateful for the occasional glimpse in the changing room mirror… one which flashes back reflections that his 007 persona might casually approve of with a muttered, “good job”. Speculation that the actor was saying his farewell to James Bond has been circling for some years, but now, unequivocally, he is done, as the rather clumsily named No Time To Die hits cinemas. As it does, the 53-year-old emerges with a few things – a life-defining imprint on the CV, a multimillion-pound war

chest, and the knowledge that he has influenced a generation of cinemagoers in refining the definition of the modern-day hero. “I’ve always thought the image of a good actor is someone who leaves the big gestures and sweeping statements for when the cameras are rolling,” he begins. “That should really be the beginning and the end of what we expect of our actors. “I don’t want to be the type who puts himself on a pedestal away from that. What right do I have to comment at length on politics or society or the environment? And why should anyone take any notice of me anyway? I’m an actor!” Back on screen, it has been interesting to see how far removed the modern version of Bond is compared to his immediate predecessors Brosnan and Dalton. And while Connery and Moore never strayed into dadbod mode, they represented an era where Bond smoked, drank and

copulated his way through problems. At the heart of what deﬁnes Bond is, according to Daniel Craig, a good yarn, purely and simply. “Just stick to the old adage that a good story goes a long way…. and blow stuff up every few minutes,” he laughs heartily. “That’s how it’s done.” Yet what makes the man himself is something rather more complex. “If you want it too little – a great body, a great ﬁlm role, a beautiful girl – you won’t get it. The same thing will happen if you want something too much - you’ll go too far the other way, burn out, overdo it, get injured. The secret is ensuring you do enough without going overboard, and that takes a little while to work out.” The husband of actress Rachel Weisz has certainly perfected the art of keeping it all in check. “Bond has always managed to combine brute warfare with effervescent charm. I only wish I could be more like him in real life!”

Councillor’s Column Last month, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a sobering report, warning of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding unless the world acts. This landmark study will undoubtedly become the focal point of the COP26 negotiations hosted by the UK in Glasgow this autumn. And whilst it’s imperative that conference commits the world’s leading carbon emitters like China and the US to take greater action, it’s also essential that the United Kingdom fulfils its net zero pledge. But if that target is going to be met, we need to act locally as well as nationally. That’s why back in September 2019, I proposed a cross-party motion to develop a Climate Emergency Action Plan to eliminate our carbon footprint in Test Valley. As well as increasing our electric vehicle fleet and harnessing new technology, we also pledged to plant thousands of trees to help remove CO2 from the atmosphere. I’m, therefore, pleased to announce that over this autumn and winter Test Valley will plant 10,000 trees right across the borough – including on land at Valley Park, Hunts Farm, Harewood, Anton Lakes, Swattons Field, Ox Drove and Picket Twenty urban park. They will consist of young trees or ‘whips’ and standard trees in a range of species, from hazel to hawthorn, blackthorn and field maple to beech, alder, oak and 14

lime. With our dedicated countryside team ensuring we create the right habitat in the right place. It’s our ambition, if we can identify appropriate land, to plant a similar number of trees in each of the next three years. Boosting biodiversity and countering climate change. This planting pledge comes hot on the heels of the work we have done throughout the summer to create more urban meadows in Test Valley, allowing grasses and plants to develop, providing valuable habitat for insects and birds. The grass in these pilot areas is due to be cut and collected this month – and we will shortly be making a decision on which areas we continue to manage as meadow and reseed with wildﬂowers. It’s our plan to continue to increase the amount of land that’s given over to nature – which is not only great for the environment but makes our parks, verges and the edges of our recreation spaces look even more attractive.

The Great British Snake Off When you think of snakes, you might picture a fat boa constrictor basking beside a Brazilian river, or a king cobra rearing up from the dust of an Indian plain. Snakes seem too exotic for the often cold, wet and windy weather of the UK. But snakes are adaptable creatures, found on every continent but Antarctica. Here are the UK’s three species of snake. The biggest: grass snakes The grass snake is our longest snake, growing to well over a metre. They’re usually a greygreen colour and most easily recognised by the black and yellow collar behind the head. They have dark eyes with round pupils, whereas adders have elliptical pupils in their bright red eyes. Grass snakes can be found in areas with long grass often near water, including garden ponds. They’re excellent swimmers and regularly feed on fish, frogs, toads and newts. Grass snakes are our only egg-laying native snake. Grass snakes are not venomous. They’re very shy creatures and will quickly slither away if they are disturbed. If they don’t have an escape route, they may play dead and roll onto their back with their tongue hanging out. As a last resort, if they’re handled, they can also release a foul-smelling liquid from their vent. The most misunderstood: adder Our only venomous native snake, the adder has picked up a bad reputation and often inspires fear. Bites can occasionally be serious (and should always be immediately checked at a hospital), but they aren’t aggressive and rarely bite people. Most bites happen when a snake is handled or stood on. Adders prefer wilder habitats than grass snakes, like heaths, woodland rides, and coastal dunes. They are rarely found in gardens. They’re shorter but stockier than a grass snake, and are usually grey-brown with a distinctive

zig-zag pattern along the back. Male adders ‘dance’ to fight over females, entwining with each other and trying to wrestle the other male to the ground. Instead of laying eggs, females incubate them internally and ‘give birth’ to up to 20 live young. The rarest: smooth snake Snakes are secretive and hard to see at the best of times, but smooth snakes are so rare that very few people in the UK are likely to have seen one. They’re found across mainland Europe, but in Great Britain are only found on a few sandy heaths in southern England: in Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Devon. Smooth snakes grow up to about 70cm long, are slender and usually grey or dark brown, with dark markings along the back. The dark markings aren’t as distinct as an adder’s zigzags, and they have round pupils (compared to the adder’s elliptical pupils). Smooth snakes aren’t venomous. They catch their prey with their teeth and coil their body around it like a constrictor, most often feeding on lizards and small mammals. Alice Ashcroft

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect looks ahead to some design trends that might rise to prominence over the next few years. I get asked a lot about future design trends and initiatives, and the truth is I wouldn’t know what a trend was if it hit me in the face! Over the years I’ve come to regard trends as very lucid, irregular things – they come about quickly, are mixed and remixed, then disappear out of nowhere; and with interior design that can be problematic given the semipermanency of how we furnish our homes. It’s not like saying ‘this pair of trousers are out of fashion this year; I’ll wear a different pair tomorrow’. If you’ve added wood panelling to every wall in your home, it’s going to take a while to ﬁx. What I will say is what happens at the beginning of every century in design and

architecture is that people stop and look back at the last century and say, ‘oh my God, we didn’t get any of that, quick, let’s have some’, and you get this rush of building and design and furniture which is kind of retro – we’ve seen it over the past decade or so with a complete craze for anything vintage from 1930-90s. It’s fair to say we’re always looking forward as far as home design goes, both

architecturally and in the patterns and designs within. If I had to put money on a style or theme over the next couple of decades, it would be eco-based. We’re seeing a real retune to very natural, sustainable materials - basic stuff. Yet also, thanks to changes in technology and the way that

we design, often using iPhones, we can survey and model things really cheaply now. So that means we are going to see all manner of goods – from home products right through to personal stuff like shoes – made not in some factory in Germany, China or Portugal, but in a shop round the corner from where you live using really sophisticated 3D printing techniques. Certainly, a look into the future is a view back towards bespoking our homes in our own design. The era of the IKEA mass-market products has helped us a lot, but technology is now freeing us to style our homes in much more personal ways. It will mean we can turn back into being a nation who make things for ourselves, in a bespoke way, which I think is a very exciting future.

Between July and August England faced record breaking heatwaves with temperatures in some parts reaching as high as 35 degrees. Romsey (depending on your point of view) was also lucky enough to be treated to what felt like a tropical summer. As such, a great deal of us took this opportunity to be outside for as much as possible - taking over with regularity the outdoor seating of pubs and restaurants, enjoying long and short strolls along idyllic routes in the countryside, and of course relaxing in the number of parks that dot the borough to either soak in the sun or retreat to the shade. Never has there been a more timely reminder of how important green spaces are to a community. And one reliable source at the centre of our outdoor leisure is, and always has been, the Memorial Park.

What started out as a neglected and waterlogged meadow, the grade II public park we know today was created in 1920 as a space to honour the fallen men of Romsey in the First and Second World Wars, as well as commemorate the town’s remarkable contribution of training over 5000 service horses. These dedications are visibly marked by the simple yet elegant cenotaph that stands by the entrance, along with the accompanying War Horse Statue that was installed in 2015.

But what is most impressive in my mind is how charming and tranquil a setting the park can be thanks to its situation as an island surrounded on two sides by the River Test and neighbouring countryside views. The park is so scenic because of the beautifully maintained ﬂower beds (which you’ll notice this year included Rhubarb!) and some 122 trees of 34 species. Even runners including myself have to stop and take in the sights while hoping a cool breeze passes over them.

A popular attraction for residents and visitors, Romsey Memorial Park has evolved greatly over the decades to be a site of historic and social signiﬁcance. Everyday we visit it. Passing in and out over and over throughout the year. 26

Since then, the park has expanded to become something of a go-to locale for socialising, cultural events, and even sporting activities. On any given day you will see people of all ages; families playing games and having picnics on the grass; children visiting the playpark and parents having tea by the Park Cafe; dogs and their walkers; enthusiasts making regular use of the tennis court and gym station; members playing at Romsey Bowling club. The park has something for everyone. Although only 5 acres big, the park is packed with a variety of interesting features. There is the Japanese ﬁeld gun Lord Mountbatten donated. The Victorian cast bandstand - which serves as a venue for concerts and musical performances. And the open grass that allows for the town gathering of annual events and

CPRE Hampshire Programme of Events Launched with Talk from World Renowned Rainforest Scientist

CPRE Hampshire are launching a new programme of talks and events for the Autumn, previously on hold due to Covid regulations. The ﬁrst event will be an insightful and fascinating talk on rainforests by Dr Glen Reynolds MBE, Director of the South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP). SEARRP was established by the UK’s Royal Society in 1985 and is based at the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It is one of the leading rainforest research programmes in the world. Science supported by SEARRP has resulted in a step-change in our understanding of the ecology of tropical rainforests, their conservation, restoration, the impacts of land-use change and the sustainable management of agricultural plantations. The title for Dr Reynolds’ talk is “Conserving Borneo’s rainforests and biodiversity in an era of land-use, climate and environmental change: reasons for hope?” Over recent decades the once pristine rainforests that covered the length and breadth of Borneo - a tropical island in SE Asia over three-times the size of the UK - has, in large part, been cleared and degraded as a consequence of industrial logging, the development of agricultural, mostly palm oil, plantations and climate change. Many of Borneo's iconic species - orangutans, clouded leopards, helmeted hornbills, the Bornean pygmy elephant and sun bears - are now severely threatened and often exist in small forest patches embedded within oil palm plantations. In 2019 the last Sumatran Rhino in Sabah died, representing the extinction of the species on Borneo.

tropical forests, even in the face of logging and fragmentation, and allied projects continue to demonstrate that it is possible for plantations to support species of high conservation value, with even orangutans able to 'co-exist' in agriculturally dominated landscapes. Research has shown that forests can be sustainably managed, restored and reconnected and that by doing so, Borneo’s rainforests can play an important role in mitigating climate change. However, the window of opportunity to act is narrow - and we all have a part to play in rolling back decades of forest loss. Boyd McCleary, Vice Chair of CPRE Hampshire said: “Rainforests contain more than half of the planet’s animal and plant species and supports the livelihoods of over one billion people. They play a critical role in stabilising the earth’s climate and atmosphere and maintaining the water cycle. These are major global issues that impact all of us. Climate change is starting to become more and more relevant to our everyday lives. The talk by Dr Reynolds will be interesting and insightful and we’re delighted to be hosting him at this event.” This event will be taking place at Sparsholt College at 6.30pm on Thursday 16th September 2021. Lost Wills: What to do if the original will cannot be found Personal representatives tasked with dealing with a deceased person’s affairs are often faced with a number of challenges, both legal and practical. Sometimes these challenges can be complex and involve dealing with contested wills. Often, however, the challenge arises simply because the deceased’s original will cannot be found but, rather, only a copy. In those circumstances, given the duties of executors, the position must always be considered very carefully. The starting point is that it will never be sufficient simply to submit a copy will with an application for probate. On its own, this will not be accepted by the probate registry. However, locating a deceased’s original will is not always straightforward, particularly if the will was made a long time prior to death or if the deceased was particularly private with their personal affairs. It is important, therefore, that the personal representatives conduct a thorough search to try and locate the original will, including searching at local solicitors (particularly any that dealt with the deceased during lifetime) and potentially at national will registration companies (although note that these are not compulsory and that this cannot therefore be treated as exhaustive). If the original will cannot be found, then steps should be taken to identify who was responsible for storing it and where the will can last be traced to. Was it stored with the firm of solicitors who

prepared it? Was it kept by the deceased themselves? Did the deceased give it to their personal representative, a friend or family member to retain? However, sometimes, despite best endeavours, the original will cannot be found. So, what should personal representatives do if faced with a lost will? In some circumstances, an application to admit a copy will or, even, the terms of a will recounted in the form of witness or affidavit evidence, can be made to the probate registry. Losing someone close to you is devasting when also facing the challenges of dealing with their estate. Thus, it is important when making a will to keep a record at home as to the whereabouts of the original document. Locating the original will removes some of the stress and anxiety during a very difficult time. We are here to assist you with these matters with our experience, patience and understanding. The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our Japanese Campervan, is always looking for new, British experiences, so taking us to see Dad’s Army at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne was an extra special treat last month. Were you an avid fan of this Iconic, now internationally renowned British show, in the late 60’s and 70’s? Back in the day this BBC sitcom reached 80 million viewers an episode and with nine series and 80 episodes in total there was a lot to laugh about. I had booked these tickets more than 18 months ago, well before any Lockdown, or hint of international adversity, so you can imagine the crowd, the audience, all seated and eagerly anticipating the

Daichi at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne cast’s appearance. When the tannoy announcement welcomed us all back to a “live show”, there was the best cheer I have heard for a long time. The audience was ready. Oh what excitement, oh what a buzz. We were there. We were with the characters. We were on that stage. Fortunately, metaphorically speaking, as the actors themselves were well rehearsed, and I am sure, as eagerly anticipating their performances as we were to watch them. We were all back together. I have been in plays (a few years ago now…) at school, and I take my hat off to these ambitious individuals, not professionals, but ‘ordinary local people’ with working lives and families to support, who work tremendously hard to put on a fully professional show. We salute you! “Don’t Panic!” You did a FANTASTIC job. You were all so in character and fully entertained us. Dad’s Army, as many of you will absolutely know, is situated in a fictional South England seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea, where the Home Guard platoon, manned by volunteers, is on watch. Jimmy Perry, one of the co-writers and creators of the

programme based a lot of what he wrote on his own experiences in the Local Defence Volunteers. Did you know that his mother did not like him being out late at night and worried that he would catch a cold, and as such the character of Private Pike is actually based on himself? How funny is that. The play started with “The Deadly Attachment” and the capturing of a German U Boat Captain and his crew. The unfearing, cantankerous Captain Mainwaring, a bank manager by trade, orders soggy fish and chips for them, much to the German captors’ displeasure. It is good-old British humour at its best. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Followed by a scene from “Mum’s Army” in which Captain Mainwaring has a wandering eye and takes a fancy to Mrs Gray. It is such a shame that many of our great British lines and innuendos are disallowed and frowned on these days. In my opinion we have one of the best senses of humour on the planet and are able to laugh at ourselves in a healthy way. It is very therapeutic. After the much-loved ice-cream interval break, came “The Godiva Affair” where poor Mr Mainwaring watches his wife cavorting ‘naked’ through the streets (actually in a full cream body suit, but fortunately it was only left to the imagination…), as she poses as Lady Godiva in a fund-raising carnival parade. As my Dad would say, “You couldn’t

Great hilarity in “the office” write it, could you, Deb!” Well, Jimmy Perry and David Croft did - and oh did we all laugh! “The Floral Dance” was the final scene and as the actors gave us their departing lines, and the curtains slowly started dropping we were all smiles and clapped and cheered to our hearts delight. Eleven of us from Modern Magazines had gone to watch this fantastic ‘blast from the past’, literally from ages 17 to 80, and all of us had a fabulous evening. “Project Play” who produces these incredible shows does a great job managing and creating them. Matthew Rock, the Director and Producer, is ever grateful to all the local people who act and spend hours of their time rehearsing, the stagehands who create each scene throughout the show, the dress makers, makeup artists and the whole team which it takes to put on such a production. Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden! With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than

that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps start autumn with a tidy-up of borders, or a clean out of the greenhouse, or perhaps even renew a few tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. And ﬁnally, invest in some evergreens to offer texture and volume in areas of the garden that might start looking a little sparser. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-ﬂowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but

Romsey, Squabb Wood September Walk. Start here I started my September walk in the heart of Romsey town. Friday morning is the most wonderful experience in the town. It almost feels pre-covid; hustle and bustle, with the cutest market! The plants are definitely the best value and the big card stall… After a walk around, I met my friend and decided to walk to Squabb Wood, in Romsey. I wasn’t sure after all the rain we have had, that it may be too wet, but we gave it a go anyway. From the town go down past the TSB Bank on your right and turn immediately right into the Abbey (little lane, not the main Abbey Church) and go under the little bridge and walk straight down on the Meads, stay on the Meads staying just to the right of the lovely Memorial Park. (Worth a visit when you have time). Another � mile you will come to ‘Salmon Leap’. It is so pretty here, I always have to stop and listen to the water, it’s quite lovely. At the side of Sadler’s Mill, turn right, there is a footpath sign… when you reach the last house turn right, walk past the new holiday lets, go through the turnstile and absorb the spectacular views. If you look to your right you will see Romsey Abbey. The grass has recently been cut, so is a bit uneven. If you have a dog this would be doggy heaven… There are sometime cows in the fields here. Continue along until you reach the prettiest of bridges. You have to navigate over the bridge and turnstile. This is a small field, carry on until you reach another bridge. Don’t forget your hand gel. Cross the field until you reach the beginning of the woods… Although I see plenty of dog walkers on their own, I definitely wouldn’t do this walk by myself.

The day we did it, it had been raining a lot, so it was not for the faint hearted, a lot of slippery mud. I did hesitate but did decide to carry on. There is a well-trodden path to follow, quite windy but very, very pretty. I have to say that on a very hot day this walk is so cool. A little way up you have to go over the gate and there is a stream, which is so crystal clear. Continue up, following the footpath. Even last summer, this was a bit muddy. This bit is Zig Zaggy, but there is a well walked path to follow. You will reach a bit that you have to jump over, it’s not big but you can pat yourself on the back when you’ve done it! On your left you will reach the prettiest of old fallen tree stumps… great for a photo shoot. You could have your ﬂask of tea and sandwich here. You are so deep into the woods now, no noise, just the birds and trees to distract you. The trees are simply beautiful and the rhododendrons are amazing. Carry on… the next bit of the walk is so lovely, a bit up hill and windy, but very beautiful! I usually walk until I reach the hilly path. I have gone further but at this point it’s usually taken about one hour, so I start my walk back. Two hours is generally enough, going back is downhill which is great. After we got back we decided to have a well-deserved lunch. I deﬁnitely wouldn’t do this walk if it had been raining a lot as it is very uneven and slippery. You will need walking boots… and a friend!

Luscious Lamb Moussaka Introduction

Colder evenings call for warming comfort food such as this satisfying moussaka. Serve with a fresh green salad or even just a crusty baguette to mop up the rich sauce.

Ingredients 500g lamb mince 2 aubergines (sliced crossways) 4 large white potatoes (peeled and sliced) 1 onion (diced) 1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée

and then rinse them thoroughly before patting dry with kitchen towel. Oven bake as instructed. • Dish can be made ahead by covering your layered moussaka with cling ﬁlm and storing it in the fridge. When ready to bake, simply cook for ﬁve minutes longer in the oven.

2 garlic cloves (minced) ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground oregano 150ml beef stock For the béchamel sauce 40g butter 40g ﬂour 500ml milk 80g grated cheddar or parmesan Pinch of salt and pepper

Top Tips • If you are concerned about the aubergine being bitter – the fresher the aubergine the less chance of this there is – simply place your raw slices in a colander with a pinch or two of salt, leave for 10 minutes

Method Step One Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lay your potato slices on one baking tray and your aubergine discs on another with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, put the lamb, onion, garlic, oregano, and cinnamon in a large frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Once browned, add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook over a high heat for 4-5 minutes until the ragù

is reduced to a thick and saucy texture. Step two To make the béchamel sauce, melt the butter in a medium saucepan and stir in the ﬂour. Cook for a few seconds, then gradually stir in the milk. Add half the grated cheese and simmer the sauce gently for 4–5 minutes, stirring regularly. Season with salt and pepper. Step Three Add the potato slices to an oven-proof dish in a single layer. Spoon over a layer of lamb ragú and top this with a layer of aubergine slices. Repeat once more before pouring over the béchamel sauce and topping with the rest of the grated cheese. Bake the moussaka for 35-40 minutes until it is golden and bubbling.
