Romsey & Wellow Friends of Cancer Research UK reach £1,000,000 target In 2002 ICRF merged with Cancer Research Campaign, and Cancer Research UK was born. During 2002 the Group celebrated their 25th Anniversary having raised around £180,000 to that date.

Romsey & Wellow Friends of Cancer Research UK reach their £1,000,000 Target and extends a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone in Romsey, West Wellow and surrounding areas, who have helped and supported them over the past 44 years, making this achievement possible. In 1977 the local Group was formed, following an advert in the National Press for help in raising funds for Cancer Research. Founder member, Pam Cotton, responded and a meeting took place, attended by Mr Gordon McLeod of the charity Imperial Cancer Research Fund. He explained the work of ICRF and asked if people attending would consider forming a Group to raise funds.

Over the years Cancer Research UK has expanded considerably, and the work by the amazing doctors, scientists and researchers continues on a much larger scale. The money that we, and many other Groups provide, together with public and corporate donations and legacies, contributes to the enormous progress in diagnosis and treatments, which are being made. Thankfully, cancer is now a survivable disease, with survival rates continuing to improve for many cancers, giving hope to countless families aﬀected by the disease. Please continue to support our local Group and the work of Cancer Research UK, whenever you can. We thank you sincerely for your support in achieving this outstanding amount.

A second meeting was held shortly after, which 25 ladies attended, and Romsey & Wellow Friends of Imperial Cancer Research Fund was oﬃcially formed in February 1977. The ﬁrst year went well and raised approximately £1,500, and over the next 20 years (1977) £131,000 had been raised. Events included Summer Fetes, Jumble Sales, Barn Dances, Stalls at Romsey Show, Music Hall at The Plaza Theatre, Fashion Show at The Polygon Hotel, Southampton, to name but a few.

Councillor’s Column

As the United Nations Climate Change Conference kicks off in Glasgow this month, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what we’ve been doing locally to tackle the climate and ecological emergency – and what we can continue to do to ensure we eliminate the council’s carbon footprint here in Test Valley. Having declared a climate emergency in 2019 and adopted our action plan in 2020 – I have recently created a brand-new Cabinet post with specific responsibility for the Climate Emergency and Countryside. Enabling Cllr Ali Johnston to focus on creating a greener vehicle fleet and harnessing new technology, as well as implementing our pledge to plant thousands of trees to help remove CO2 from the atmosphere. On that note, the Council is in the process of completing the purchase of land near Upper Clatford to create a wildlife-rich area of countryside for communities to enjoy in the future. The land, which is situated to the south of Bury Hill covers around 38-acres, which the council has been able to purchase from developer contributions specifically set aside to improve access to the countryside. Once the purchase is complete in January 2022, the council will begin work towards opening up the space for the public to enjoy, with the aim of having the site accessible and available for use in the autumn next year. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted just how important green space is to our communities. My hope is that generations to come can enjoy

this wonderful area of countryside – as they do in our other nature reserves at Rooksbury Mill and Anton Lakes in Andover and Fishlake Meadows in Romsey. This work comes hot on the heels of the work we have done this year to create more urban meadows in Test Valley, allowing grasses and plants to develop, providing valuable habitat for insects and birds. It’s our plan to continue to increase the amount of land that’s given over to nature – which is not only great for the environment but makes our parks, verges and the edges of our recreation spaces look even more attractive. We are also working closely with the County Council, which is in charge of waste disposal infrastructure, to give our residents more opportunities to recycle. It is now looking increasingly likely that from early 2023, we’ll be able to oﬀer residents the chance to recycle glass, thin plastics (pots, tubs and trays) and Tetra Pak-style cartons, in the same household recycling bin. As well as providing a weekly food waste service. Upping recycling rates. So, whilst COP26 will, quite rightly, be focusing on what can be done nationally and internationally including hopefully committing the biggest carbon emitters like China and the US to take greater action - it’s essential that we continue to make a diﬀerence locally.

Leisure is Pleasure Why the dressed-down tracksuit and leisure look is here to stay. Did you get too used to dressing down over lockdown, and it now feels like a chore to put on that formal workwear again? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The evidence… activewear accounted for over 40 per cent of online fashion sales last year, and that’s hardly surprising when you’ve got some of the world’s best musicians, actors, and even world leaders, ditching their designer suits and denim. The reality is tracksuits and activewear are no longer seen as an urban-only garment, and the biggest labels are joining the sports companies in the utilitarian stakes. When tracksuits became a thing of the mainstream after being popularised in the 1960s by American athletes, they were often made of cotton and terrycloth, as well as having buttons instead of zippers.

The big players began to get involved, with the growing popularity of exercise and running in the Eighties seeing these matching sports uniforms achieve unprecedented sales levels. With film and television exposure further enhancing their popularity, the rap scene pushed popularity further into the mainstream, while British bands at the height of ‘Britpop’ such as Oasis regularly dressed in either the colours of their favourite football team or sports brands who were eager to take advantage of their logos being displayed everywhere. Soon enough, Sporty Spice proved a perfect exemplar of leisurewear girl power, a point from which we have never regressed, particularly when Nineties ‘It girls’ and socialites – think Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian – pushed ‘dressed down’ into the realms of ‘dressing up’. As it stands, velour tracksuits are en vogue, though 2022 is expected to bring about a new look. Metallic sheens and lustrous finishes will come to the fore, with the encouragement to mix branded tops with more voluminous, flowing bottoms, such as a skirt. In addition, future tech

such as light-reflecting fabrics and holographic finishes will emerge. And with an emphasis on boldness and ‘street scene’, we can expect the feeling of post-pandemic freedom to filter through into bright, buoyant leisurewear designs. Also keep an eye out for an inevitable push towards eco fabrics and fashion sustainability - as ever, looking good doesn’t and shouldn’t mean bad news for the planet. There’s even a new term – athluxe – reflecting the fully blurred lines between performance and fashion, and what’s great is the fact leisurewear doesn’t discriminate on age, income, or shape in the same way as might a miniskirt or a top that sits off the shoulders. A tracksuit is a style statement, a jacket with shorts shows ingenuity, a polo shirt is high fashion. So while we all need to remember to dress appropriately for the occasion, the rules have certainly been relaxed as far as leisurewear goes.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses the importance of buildings in terms of who we are as people. I’ve always regarded buildings as living, breathing, evolving things, and while you can judge each and every one architecturally, sometimes the real fabric of a home, an office, a shop, a theatre – whatever it may be – is in the people and personalities who inhabit it. It’s always interesting with Grand Designs when we revisit buildings several years down the line to see how they have grown and merged into their environments. When a project is freshly completed there is always an element of buildings appearing clinical and, I guess, unhomely. I would even suggest that a scuffed skirting board or lightly scratched wooden floor adds personality to a space, so we should all be encouraged to enjoy our homes, to throw ourselves around in them, without fear of losing that show home chic. It’s funny, I remember one of the first projects we did, down in

Brighton. I went back after 12 or 13 years and discovered that the kids who were five or so were now these strapping 18-year-olds and heading off to university, while this ‘house’ was truly transformed into a home. In other projects we revisited, we had many people who had started projects effectively homeless, or as single parents,

a local councillor, or perhaps they are sitting on the board of a housing association, all giving back to the community. For me, that shows that in the right circumstances when you’re given the chance to build (which is an empowering process) and to experience living in great architecture, it leads to people’s lives changing for the better. It’s no coincidence and I see this all the time; and I love that because it vindicates so much of what I’d felt and believed about buildings for so long.

open ﬂoor plan and unrestricted seating that allows strangers to strike up conversations. These homely buildings essentially act as neutral territory for all walks of life. Each containing their own cast list of regulars and local characters - which we can all agree Romsey has plenty.

In many respects, pubs were never intended to be the popular communal venues they now are. According to Historic UK, public houses date all the way back to the Romans who built them strategically along roads solely to quench the thirst of legionary troops. Of course over time these buildings grew to provide lodging for all weary travellers, and have even been depicted in folklore as uncivilised dens for smugglers and highwaymen, before finally settling as spaces of leisure where you can meet friends for quiz nights or watch travelling bands. Regardless of the evolution, the specific British brand associated has never been shaken, to the degree that pubs are recognised worldwide as a “quintessential characteristic” of the English town, village, and city (if true then Romsey certainly plays its part in giving the claim credit). So much so that in 1943, the US War Office commissioned a film guide for American soldiers about British

society called A Welcome to Britain, which highlighted our customs and etiquettes. And the ﬁrst thing they introduced about us - the pub.

It's not a surprise the pub is considered so iconically British as it is - like red telephone boxes or Big Ben. They can be spotted a mile away by the formulaic golden lettering above the entrance and the hanging of a painted sign - distinguished by portraits that reflect local agricultural heritage or even royal connection. MAYORS WINTER MESSAGE Dear Romsey Resident When I wrote for the last newsletter we were just coming out of lockdown and waiting to hear which ‘roadmap’ we would be following through the summer. What a lot has happened since then! Our summer, although not as summery as it could have been, has for me been glorious watching our town come back to life: the bunting flapping in sunshine, seeing The Hundred full of shoppers, people milling around the market stalls, meeting friends in both the outdoor and indoor coffee shops. All normal Romsey things that last year could only be imagined. It has been a privilege to attend functions in the last few months as Town Mayor and to witness the enjoyment of people and groups as they return their normal events (albeit with mask wearing and social distancing). The Romsey Festival was a joy, the Songs of Praise held in the Market Place on a lovely sunny evening was the sort of event that makes Romsey special. We are so lucky to live amongst people who organize such events that make us all feel good about where we live.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS 27th November, 6pm Lantern Parade, Winter Carnival and Light Switch On This year the Community Lantern Parade will assemble at Crosfield Hall with the Winter Carnival and will follow the same route, ie, Broadwater Road, into Palmerston Street onto The Hundred and into the Market Place. The Lantern Parade will then continue down Bell Street and Broadwater Road back to the Crosfield Hall whilst the Carnival will wait until the Lights have been switched on and then follow the same route.

VIEW FROM THE TOWN Since the last newsletter, Romsey has enjoyed a lovely Summer and a more “normal” feel to everyday life. As Lockdown eased, local businesses and all retail venues were able to fully open, with restaurants, pubs and coffee shops all able to serve an unlimited number of customers, both internally and externally. The Market Place with its outdoor seating continues to be a popular venue for people to meet and to enjoy alfresco coffee, meals and drinks. In terms of footfall, latest figures show that Romsey is back to 2019 rates at 62%. There is a 5% shop vacancy rate in Romsey town centre, whereas Andover is nearer 14%. 12 % is the National average and so as a Town Centre Romsey continues to perform well. It is great to see new businesses opening and Romsey benefits from many independent shops which are an attraction to both residents and visitors alike. The High Street was changing even before the pandemic began and there seems to have been a cultural shift to buying local and supporting local businesses. We are working in conjunction with our colleagues at the Chamber of Commerce and Test Valley Borough Council to bring new initiatives for keeping the £ local. Our markets seem to be thriving and the Sunday Romsey Maker’s Market in the Market Place and The Cornmarket has proved to be popular, adding to the ambiance of the Town.

Romsey Market held on a Tuesday, Friday and Saturday still remains extremely popular with a growing waiting list. As well as the popular wellestablished traders, new stall holders are also proving to attract new customers with a more diverse offering. In terms of Town events, it was great to welcome back the popular Romsey Antiques Market to the Town in July and October. The postponed Romsey Festival took place in July with great success. We are also looking forward to being able to hold a full programme of Christmas events this year, with the Christmas Light Switch On Event and Winter Carnival with its ever popular Lantern Parade being held on 27th November. In terms of tourism, the staycation and day-trip market has benefited Romsey, with many local tourists re-discovering the sometimes forgotten gems that we have on our own doorstep. Working with our colleagues at Tourism South East, this market is predicted to keep growing into 2022 and new initiatives are currently being worked on to attract more visitors and visitor spend into Romsey. I need an industrial unit for my business, what do I need to consider? Here are just a few of the key questions to ask at outset when negotiating the key terms with a landlord. 1. How long do you want to commit to? Discuss with your potential landlord how long the term of the Lease will be. Your business is likely to evolve over time, so you need to think about how long you want to commit to that particular unit. You will be contractually committed right until the end of the Lease, unless you are able to include a ‘tenant break option’ – usually after a fixed amount of time – which gives you greater flexibility to suit your business needs. 2. What type of space does the Lease cover? Make sure you agree the exact internal and external areas forming part of your Lease when negotiating terms. It is important to know early on whether your lease is going to include exclusive use of external yard/parking areas for storage, loading etc. Such areas can be demised (i.e. form part of your Lease) or allocated at the Landlord’s discretion. 3. Will my Lease have ‘security of tenure’? This means whether or not your lease is inside or outside the Landlord & Tenant Act 1954. If it is “inside the Act” then you have security – meaning that when the contractual term of the Lease ends you have an automatic right under statute to renew the lease on similar terms, with your landlord only being able to prevent this on certain limited statutory grounds. If your lease does not have security of tenure, it means you must vacate at the end of the lease, and you have no automatic right to renew. Your landlord is

free to negotiate terms for any new lease with you (or a third party) afresh. 4. What building repairs will you be liable for? Leases are usually either ‘full repairing’ (meaning the tenant assumes responsibility for the whole of the unit, including walls, foundations, roof etc) or ‘internal repairing only’ (where the Landlord retains responsibility for repairs to the external parts of the unit. Make sure you know which type you are committing to! Think about the end of the lease term as well – you are usually obliged to hand back the unit in good repair at the end of the lease term, regardless of the state of repair when you take it on – so it is essential that you fully check the condition of the unit before legally committing to a lease, or that you limit your repairing liability so that you only hand back in the same condition as when you take it on. Otherwise, you could be stung for a hefty cost at the end of the lease. 5. What will be my total monthly cost in relation to the Unit? Consider all cost elements you will have to pay each month – such as annual rent, business rates, service charges, estate charges, buildings insurance, VAT on rental payments, etc. Most landlords will require a rent deposit (usually 3-6 months’ rent) which will be payable at the outset along with the first month/quarter’s rent. The Modern Magazines Camper Van The Jurassic era, an age of reptiles. A time of abundant dinosaurs and the advent of birds and mammals. It all started approximately 200 million years ago and ended around 145 million years ago with widespread volcanic eruptions and the release of so much CO2 that the oceans became acidic, and the global warming killed off 76 percent of marine and terrestrial life on Earth. Many plants however survived including the ferns we see today, horsetails, cypress, pines and many other species of our beloved greenery we so enjoy. Daichi is a big fan of our British Jurassic Coast. He loves to wind around those country lanes and end up at the sea looking out into the far distance. This month he took us to a real Dorset beauty spot. Ringstead Bay off the small village of Ringstead. The beach here is very different to the majestic

sandy, warm beach in Weymouth just 8 miles away. This is a covelike beach, more like you find in Devon or Cornwall. It is pebbly and has painted wooden rowing boats waiting patiently in their upsidedown position near the wall. I love sandy beaches, but this was pretty special, and the water was crystal clear and inviting. Daichi had found this glorious, secluded place by chance in fact, as we were just exploring, following roads we thought looked interesting. Daichi likes to do this. On a warmer day, it would have been ideal for a picnic and a swim. It is such a sheltered, cozy bay. Today it was enough to take in the view and relax. The Isle of Portland, looking very grand, is in clear sight. There is a café with seating outside and a parking area which is really convenient so I am sure in the height of summer it is buzzing with excitement and

activity. The day we arrived it was quiet and peaceful. Ideal for gazing out to sea and breathing in the fresh, cooler autumn air. Perfect. After a little exploration Daichi took us onto Osmington Mills just five miles from the town of Weymouth. Here there is a ‘chocolate box’ thatched pub and restaurant, The Smugglers Inn. Beautiful. The views from the cliff top here are both exhilarating and extremely calming at the same time. That first, incredible, panoramic scene over the sea, the cliffs, the bay, the rocks and huge ocean liners bobbing around (a reminder of our trials and tribulations of today), took Daichi’s breath away. Can you imagine being a massive dinosaur lugging that heavy body and long neck across this land and swinging your neck out to sea where there are huge fish swirling around in the waters below. This area sparks that imagination, that long-gone sight of yesteryears. The walks around the whole coastline look inspiring and the next time we go there we will be wearing hiking boots and will be

taking a stroll for sure. The beaches are dog friendly too, so for anyone with a four-legged, active friend, they can take the stroll with you. This whole 96-mile Jurassic coastline, which stretches from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset is just gorgeous. There is so much to explore. Thousands and thousands of years of history. Changing climates, reptiles now extinct, fish are much smaller, and humans have taken over. What a different planet it is today. Somehow for Daichi it puts the problems of now, into a different perspective. Maybe we should take some of those problems less seriously, throw caution to the wind a bit more, argue a little less and laugh much more. Daichi certainly likes to make us smile and I have to say he does a great job! Where will he take us next, I wonder…?

This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about getting our youngsters involved in gardening projects. I started gardening when I was nine or ten. I made a little greenhouse, tidied edges, mowed the lawn and sowed seeds, which then came up. When I had that little bit of success, it emboldened me to take cuttings and do more, and it all went on from there. To be honest I was obsessed with all things nature - frogs, toads, insects… and the garden is the nearest bit of natural history to us, so I always felt comfortable there and I still do, although I’m not sure the young generation have quite the same connection with the outdoors. In recent years I’ve worked with the Royal Horticultural Society in campaigns for school gardening, and we’ve had over 30,000 schools involved. Particularly at primary level if we can, literally, sow the seed when children are young, get them connected with the earth rather than disconnected and fearful, it will mean we are investing in the future custodians of the landscape. To me, it’s vitally important we

pass on our joy and knowledge. When I was a boy, Percy Thrower presented a programme called Gardening Club on a Friday night – this was way before Gardener’s World. He, along with a junior schoolteacher of mine, Harry Rhodes – who used to sell cacti at the church bazaar – were great inspirations. Indeed, my ﬁrst plants came from Harry. Before he died, he saw me building a career, and one of life’s great delights was knowing that Harry witnessed this little lad he had encouraged to garden getting on, and doing alright. It was an unusual thing for a small boy to be interested in, therefore when you see a young gardener showing a keen interest, you always want to fan the ﬂame. I’m now doing what Percy and Mr Rhodes did.

Of course as you get older, the way you use a garden changes. Just as when I was a boy it was a place of discovery and play, now it’s more a thing of art, beauty and quiet contemplation. What undoubtedly links my present self with that nine-yearold version of me, is stimulation, and that has never changed in all the years I’ve spent outdoors planting this, trimming that. And that’s what’s there for the younger generation. That’s why I feel we should do our utmost to engage young people in the glory of our gardens and outside spaces. With all the other distractions they have nowadays, it feels more important than ever.

An Appeal from Unity Reaps Rewards

An appeal to the community from Unity, the Test Valley based charity, once again reaped rewards when the organisation asked for donations to help the Afghan Evacuees. Recognising the need to provide even the most basic of items for individuals and families, Unity was swamped with donations following a social media campaign which local residents responded to in style. Within a week, Unity’s board room had been taken over by a mountain of donations which included a 32” ﬂat screen television, pushchairs, toys and hygiene products as well as clothing. As a result, the request for donations was closed a matter of days later. Supporting the Afghan families has also meant that Unity Transport has had a role to play too taking individuals to medical appointments, to the Mosque and making a bus 50

available for social activities. Terry Bishop, Unity Chief Executive said, “I am extremely thankful to the Test Valley residents who generously donated and to Unity’s staﬀ and volunteers who dropped everything to make this happen in a matter of days. Tear ‘n’ Share Sweet Bread Introduction

Although not a traditional festive-themed bake, sweetbreads do tend to come into the ascendancy during the winter months, and this tear ‘n’ share loaf will not only offer a soft, lightly sweetened and buttery bread treat – delicious as toast or as a bigger accompaniment to an evening meal – it’s also sociable and fun. Top it with some butter, jam or even icing, and serve.

Ingredients

(serves four)

1 cup warm milk 2 tsp active dried yeast 3 cups all-purpose ﬂour 1/3 cup granulated sugar 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp vanilla extract 3 oz unsalted butter, softened, room temperature 1/4 tsp kosher salt Egg wash (whisk together) 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp water 3 to 4 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

Method 1. Check yeast by dissolving 2tsp of active dried yeast with 1/2 cup milk and 1tsp of sugar from the overall amount and leave in a warm location until frothy, about 10-15mins. If the mixture does not froth up and rise, discard and start again. 2. Into a bowl sift three cups of
