Dear Residents, What a wonderful June we all had celebrating our very dedicated and loved Queen of seventy reigning years. An incredible achievement. I do hope you were able to enjoy the festivities as much as we did. Summer is officially here! We have indeed had some glorious days too, so long may they continue. Do you have a holiday planned? We have been so busy with our new venture, our move to the sea- side, that we are going to stay local and make the most of our very British beach and surrounding attractions. This certainly helps our economy too and supports the local shops and amenities. If you are going abroad, I am sure you will enjoy that too. Here’s to fresh air, good company and some relaxing days. Of course, our advertisers all want to stay busy, so they need your calls for sure. Why not get them to sort the house out, fix that leak, create a new bathroom, kitchen or landscape the garden, while you have some time out? That seems like a good idea to me. Councillor’s Column When I became Leader of Test Valley, I made increasing opportunities for residents to recycle one of my administration’s top priorities. Indeed, it was a manifesto pledge to enable people to put glass in their recycling bin instead of having to take it to the bottle bank and for residents to be able to recycle thin plastics (pots, tubs and trays) instead of sending them off to be burnt. I’m pleased to tell you that we are now making that a reality. As well as introducing a weekly food waste collection - lifting us into the top tier of local councils nationally in terms of recycling rate.

In order to boost recycling rates as much as possible, keep collection days the same and reduce additional costs, we are recommending the introduction of 1, 2, 3 weekly waste collections. This would involve collecting black bins in week one, brown bins in week two and blue bins in week three. Food waste would be collected weekly, meaning a greater frequency of collections than currently.

As the waste collection authority, Test Valley has been consistently lobbying Hampshire County Council (the waste disposal authority) to upgrade its Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs), which is where the contents of your recycling bin are taken for processing. Thankfully the Government’s new Environment Act has proved the catalyst we need for change. In turn, the Government expects all local authorities to achieve a target of recycling at least 55% of their total waste by 2025 but we expect to be able to go higher than this.

We know that a change of this magnitude will introduce challenges, which is why the Council will engage extensively with residents between now and implementation. For example, for some people finding the space for additional bins will be very difficult. How will we manage collections from flats with communal bins? How can we help those people who currently don’t have space for bins at all? What happens if you don’t need to recycle your food as you already compost it at home?

As a result, the County Council is now driving forward plans to build a brand new MRF - and Test Valley have signed up to a Hampshire wide Joint Municipal Waste Strategy. This will see the introduction of a new blue bin and also two food caddies for each household, a small one for your kitchen and a much larger one to be left out at the roadside. What you put in your bins will also change: Blue - Glass, tins and cans, cartons, aerosols, plastic bottles, pots, tubs & trays. Brown - Cardboard, paper and magazines. Food caddy - Food waste. Black - Any remaining non-recyclable waste. Green bins will remain the same if you are a subscriber. I know the introduction of additional receptacles will be an issue for some people that we need to solve but as you will see from the report (link below) we don’t have any choice on the number of bins in order to comply with the Act and link into the new processing facility. It also seems to work in other local authority areas.

That’s why we are announcing our plans now with an implementation date of 2024. Not only does that give the County Council the requisite time to build the new processing facility. Crucial for this new system to work. It also gives us time to investigate solutions and offer help to those that need it. In the meantime, a series of initial FAQs have been developed that are reflective of some of the challenges we envisage. An agent for change Why preservation of both people, and the planet, is the next venture for Amal Clooney. Amal Clooney is best known for human, not environmental, advocacy; yet it was at the Greenbuild 2018 Conference that we saw, for the first time, a new side to the human rights lawyer. It was one that followed the conference’s mantra that we can only solve society’s ills by proper intersection of humanity and the wider environment.

If you care for someone, you invest in their passions and the drive to make change. “He is a tremendous support and he has opened my eyes to another side to justice, for the planet, and I do cherish that.” “It means harmony and equilibrium between human and environmental factors are intrinsic to each other, so we have to be passionate about both.” Clearly, Clooney has been steered in this direction by husband George’s vociferous commitment to environment change. And while even the Clooney Foundation, set up by the couple in 2016, dominates its pledges towards justice for the individual, the ethos of change for the greater good is a common thread that runs within.

While Amal Clooney benefits from inherent beauty, wealth and celebrity status, what makes her so engaging is something separate that cannot be learned or taught – it is an ability to light up the room; she is someone who appears capable of speaking to anyone at any level. “I think a part of us needs to relearn the art of conversation and compassion. What has happened across the world in the last couple of years has provided real challenges and we need to stick together.”

Wonderful Watervoles Water voles are Britain’s largest voles, with fully grown adults reaching lengths of 20cm (plus a 12cm tail) and weighing up to 350g. They are charismatic little creatures with a round face, blunt nose, short furry tail and glossy dark brown or black fur.

body weight every day. Their diet consists mainly of grasses and waterside plants, plus twigs, bulbs, roots and fallen fruit.

Despite their name, water voles are not particularly well-adapted to aquatic life. They’ve evolved to live alongside water and their characteristic ‘plop’ is the sound of them diving into water to escape predators and access the underwater entrance to their burrow. But they are clumsy swimmers and lack rudder-like tails or webbed feet that other waterloving creatures have evolved.

They aren’t too picky and have been recorded feeding on up to 220 different plants.

Burrowing and breeding Water voles live in burrows, which they build by biting into the banks with very strong, enamel-coated orange teeth. These burrows can be complex and consist of nesting and nursing chambers, with two entrances, one on the bank and one underwater. A water vole burrow is roughly the width of a balled-up fist or a tennis ball. During winter, water voles live in family groups in their burrows; but become very territorial during breeding season between April and October. Water voles are extremely successful breeders with a gestation of just 23 days! Pups leave the nest after three weeks and can breed at just 15 weeks old. One female water vole can have up to 30 babies in a single breeding season. Water voles have a very short lifecycle and don’t usually live for more than one winter.

Water voles in decline Sadly, water voles are one of the UK’s fastest declining mammals with up to 90% of the population lost since the 1970s due to habitat loss and fragmentation and the introduction of American mink. Water voles are predated by native animals like otters, buzzards, owls, and foxes but can cope by breeding rapidly and escaping into their burrows. A female mink, however, is slim enough to follow water voles into their burrows and kill entire populations. Fortunately, it’s not too late for water voles. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is helping water vole populations recover in our two counties through reintroductions, coordinating national projects and managing our nature reserves with water voles in mind. Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club Competition “Road to Nowhere” by Roy Lambeth DPAGB, EFIAP was awarded the trophy in the advanced category of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s Print of the Year competition. The judge, Tony Oliver, said he loved the composition and detail in the image. Roy received a Seal of Merit for another of his images. Second place went to “Point of Sale” by Keith Rose LRPS. Keith also took third place for “Morning Mist in Tuscany” and received Seals of Merit for two other images. Further Seals of Merit were awarded to Margaret Cooper and Terry Jamieson. In the primary category, Mike Cox took first place with “European Roller” which the judge described as a “cracking natural history shot”. Mike received a Seal of Merit for another of his images. Second and third places went to Martin Bowles for “Back to the Future” and “Sail Trainer” respectively and Martin received a Seal of Merit for another of his photographs.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the difference between decorative and functional. The other day I found myself having a conversation about clocks, and it dawned on me how our reliance on them in the home has changed so much over the years. The reason for this is obvious – we have watches, phones, laptops, and various other timing devices scattered about our personal space. The era of having to get up and walk into another room to discover we’re late for the train, is long gone. There feels some justice in that, too. After all, the humble wall clock was, for many years, vilified in its role in reminding us that we were behind schedule. It must be relieved to know that now, in 2022, it serves a new purpose – it is an aesthetic choice; it is a timeless interior addition that alludes to a tradition of sophistication and style - content, simply, to sit smugly in the background of household life, faithfully ticking

away the seconds ad infinitum.

Its riling raison d’être aside, there was a time when large clocks were considered emblems of opulence; and although the clamour for small and sleeker accessories has relegated the wall clock to an afterthought, there’s a case for arguing this timeless timepiece can add an eye-catching allure to any contemporary space. The clock is, in many ways, a piece of moving, evolving art. It can exaggerate, calm or simply just sympathise with a wall. It can bring out colours and connect furniture, items and artwork in genre or era or style. Even if you’re hoping to emulate uber-minimalist interiors, an elegant or oversized wall clock can offer a break from potential

monotony while still appearing a natural extension of its surroundings and theme. Designers now treat these creations as art pieces – ditching the rounded constraints or traditional elements to drag the timing device into the present. Whichever way you look at it, wall clocks belong in a different era, though that tangible link between functional and decorative is one that we should consider across a number of objects and a number of rooms in our homes. The truth is, a good home, or house, or space, should combine the two. We need things around us that add to the feeling of being provided for us, yet at the same time we want to enjoy that elegance and beautification. The secret to any space is finding the correct ratio between the two, and that sometimes can be easier said than done. Good luck!

DVLA Devil As far as dealing with the DVLA is concerned, the devil is in the detail. Here are six things you need to ensure are up to scratch if you want to steer clear of potentially landing yourself in trouble with the UK’s driver and vehicle licensing authority. 1. Change of address This is the big one. If you have moved and your address no longer matches that on your licence, you must contact the DVLA immediately. Being caught with an incorrect address can lead to an instant fine, and even temporary addresses must be updated. The good news is the change can be made quickly and easily online, doesn’t cost anything, and your new licence will typically be with you in a week. 2. Change of name or gender You must also inform the DVLA of a change of name or gender. You are still permitted to drive while new documents are being produced that reflect a change, and again the process is relatively straightforward and cost-free. 3. Change in marital status We all go through relationship changes, and if you are entering

into a marriage or exiting one – which includes being widowed – you’ll need to let the DVLA know. 4. Change of vehicle While this one seems obvious, and very often the process of changing ownership is done for you – perhaps because you’ve bought a car from a registered dealership, or because the person you have sold a car to has taken the New Keeper slip from the logbook (V5C) – it is still your responsibility to check that the change has taken place and been listed with DVLA. This is essentially for your own good - if the person you’ve sold a car to goes on to commit a

motoring offence, you run the risk of being held accountable if the vehicle remains in your name. 5. Change of vehicle usage Declaring a vehicle ‘SORN’ (Statutory Off Road Notification), means you will not use it. You’ll save money in terms of being refunded for full months of road tax, although you will still need to pay car insurance. The penalty for driving a car that is SORN is anything up to £2,500. 6. Change in medical conditions Finally, you need to report any changes to your health. So everything from deterioration of eyesight, through to more severe conditions such as epilepsy, blackouts, fainting, as well as neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and the after-effects of a stroke, must be reported.

MAYORS SUMMER MESSAGE I grew up on the fringes of one market town (Lymington) and spent the first half of my working life living on the fringes of another (Wimborne). So it was inevitable that when I moved to Romsey in 2011, it was to the edge of town (Sandy Lane). What initially brought me to Romsey (a decade earlier) was the Plaza Theatre, where some of you may have seen me treading the boards, and where I am now in my tenth year as Chair. Being Trustee of such a great place as the Plaza was honour enough. As recently as three years ago I’d never had any involvement in local government, so becoming Mayor was simply not conceivable. That it has happened is a massive honour and a huge source of pride for myself, my wife Kathrina, and the rest of my family. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can, and supporting as many good causes as possible, during the year. The two causes that I will be particularly striving to support are the equal beneficiaries of whatever funds the Mayoral charity events can raise – namely George’s Trust and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. As well as the Mayor’s concert at the Abbey, there will be an event in October at the Plaza and (hopefully) an evening event in the Town Hall next spring. Events are beginning to resurface, after the tough years of the pandemic. And I am keen that, as all these events start to come back to life, I help in whatever way I can. So please do use the opportunity to invite me along, via the Romsey Town Council website, if that helps with a bit of publicity (if nothing else!) Romsey Town Council

In the past, oak seats have been purchased, in keeping with the historic and conservation areas such as Abbey Place but because of the now considerable cost of replacing with oak we are looking at other products that will cost less and require less maintenance. Many towns now use more modern designs in longer lasting materials such as metal, recycled plastic and concrete. The Town Council and TVBC are looking at these alternatives for future replacements, a few of which, we recognise, are now quite urgent.

WILDER ROMSEY Many of you may have heard of the Romsey Future initiative – aimed at ensuring good communication between Test Valley Borough Council and the Romsey population, as well as putting local residents in charge of describing what it is that they want and helping to make it happen. Many things have come out of Romsey Future – one of which was a workstream called Natural Environment and Sustainability. This was a mix of improving access to the natural world, coupled with subjects such as waste management and recycling. Well, over time everything changes. And in this case, what changed was that the most vocal and obvious support for this workstream came down heavily in favour of the natural environment work. Not a surprise, given how many local residents that there are with such an interest – not to mention a very local nature reserve!

Consequently – with the help of grants from Romsey Borough councillors – Wilder Romsey was launched. With a focus of helping all relevant organisations share information and volunteers – hence clearance work on the Romsey canal, and tree and wildflower planting. It referred to the formation of the civil parishes of Romsey Town and Romsey Extra in 1894. And to the fact that Romsey Town has grown – and Romsey Extra shrunk – twice since then.

The proposal to redevelop the area of Romsey known as the south of the town centre (SOTC) was initially conceived almost ten years ago and is now being looked at in detail.

This will provide retail/hospitality/leisure space and flats on the current bus station site and a new community space to replace Crosfield hall is also being considered. The possibility of a new location for ALDI could mean combined retail and flats with extra parking on the current ALDI car park. There will be space for bus access.

A supported living home in Romsey has been criticised for removing a stair lift, assistance cords and outside taps by local councillors.

Romsey Cllrs Nik Daas and John Critchley met with residents of Linden Court to discuss the changes.

Linden Court, on Linden Road, was set up specifically for elderly residents on a long-term contract in which they can be supported by an independent living warden plus other amenities such as help cords in case of emergencies.

Cllr Nik Daas said: “These changes are poor tactics by Aster to try and oust residents from the place they call home. What has angered me the most was the removal of the stairlift. There are a number of elderly residents on the first floor, one who is partially blind and another in their eighties, how can they be expected to cope with such changes.”

However, in a recent letter, residents were informed that the building would be undergoing changes which would see amenities they rely on removed. Residents had 28 days to responds to the consultation, subsequently the works went ahead.

DUKES MILL Many residents have been in contact with regards to increased rubbish in the Dukes Mill area. A number of them have advised that it is largely Dominos pizza boxes which are the main litter issue in this area, due to a lack of bins outside the Dominos store.

The store has a small bin inside however, it is tucked away at the back. After discussion with the store manager, they are now going to move the bin to the front of the shop. I hope that the movement of the Dominos bin to a more visible location will prompt people to bin it here.

I initially sent an official letter requesting Dominos to take some action on the litter issue. I then followed this up by going into the store and speaking with the Store Manager. I further explained the issue of litter in Dukes Mill and the stream – the store manager was happy to support the community on this.

In addition, I am working with the team at Test Valley Borough Council to acquire a new bin in the area of Dukes Mill, however this is still a work in progress. Cllr Nik Daas Abbey Ward

Romsey Ramblers Walks in July In the middle of June, Romsey Ramblers and friends enjoyed a week of walking in the Romsey Walking Festival. The Festival entailed walks for widely different levels of walker capability. The programme consisted of two short walks in the Dun Valley, long distance walks along the Clarendon Way covering, in two days, the 26 miles between Winchester and Salis bury. On a more watery theme, there were walks covering the canals and flood defences of Romsey and a walk looking at the mills and millstreams of Romsey. There was a medium-length walk from Toothill to Nutburn via Chilworth. The Festival con cluded with Romsey Ramblers summer barbeque which was attended by about 40 members and friends. The weather was not “flaming” but it was perfect for walking. The only casualty to the weather was a planned walk to hear nightjars. Unfortunately the weather would have caused the nightjars to stay at home. In July Romsey Ramblers has four walks. There is also a visit to Lyburn Farm. Property Fraud : Protect yourself with property alerts A fraudster can pretend to be anyone involved in a property transaction such as the owner, buyer, borrower, lender or conveyancer. Property fraud can be very attractive to fraudsters if they successfully persuade a buyer, their conveyancer or a lender into believing they are the true owner. They can then sell or mortgage the property to get cash from either the purchase monies or the mortgage advance. This often involves the impersonation of the registered owner and we highlight below who might be most at risk and what properties are seen as desirable targets. Owners at greater risk are: • unregistered owners • absent owners (eg. abroad, in hospital, in care homes) • landlords • beneficiaries of owners who have died • long-time owners with more equity in their property • sole owners Properties at most risk are: • high value properties • empty properties • properties without a mortgage • tenanted properties The Land Registry are encouraging people to set up a property alert in order to warn them if someone attempts to alter key details of their property online. • Scammers attempt to transfer your property into their name using false documents, or stolen identities, in some cases, even whilst you are living there. • The scammers then raise mortgages against, or sell, your property without you knowing. • Victims can find that they have to leave their home as there is nothing that can be done to get the property back.

• Victims are left with having to claim compensation from the Land Registry to replace their home. Whilst the Land Registry have been able to stop some cases where fraudulent documents have been submitted, not all cases are stopped, so it is important to help protect yourself against property theft. To protect yourself against the risk of property fraud, you should consider the following: • Register your property on the Land Registry if it is not already registered. • Sign up for the free Land Registry Property Alert service. You can get alerts for up to 10 properties, meaning you can help protect vulnerable family or friends as well as yourself. • Put a restriction on your title: this will stop the Land Registry registering any sale or mortgage on your property unless a conveyancer or solicitor certifies that the application was made by you. This restriction: ◊ Costs £40 if you live at the property. ◊ Is free where you do not live at the property but own it privately. ◊ Is free if a company owns the property. The lack of an ‘s’ doesn’t directly imply you are on a scam website, but it is telling you that the

security certificate is inadequate, and you should refrain from entering personal information. Some browsers – Google Chrome being one – add a padlock icon denoting any website that is fully secure, or the web address could be shown in green. The highest form of encryption for any site will show the website name before the address, also. Mostly, ask yourself if what’s being offered is realistic. On the internet, just as in real life, if something you see online appears too good to be true – particularly if you’ve clicked on an advert or had a popup appear on your screen – it probably is. Also have a look for how well written and presented the site is. There is a very real correlation between the

trustworthiness of a site and the attention paid to spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may not surprise you to hear that few scammers are fully adept in the finer workings of the English language, particularly if that site is being run many thousands of miles from the UK, and authentic marketing will almost always look professional in style and content. Furthermore, as much as Google may at times frustrate us by offering a multitude of options that are almost bewildering in number, it remains a great source for checking what we know. So if a site looks suspicious put its name into Google. If it’s a known rogue business then there’s a good chance it’s being discussed across the web. Finally, if you are purchasing online, use a credit card or trackback financial tool, such as PayPal. That way if something does go awry, you have the security of reclaiming your money.

Platinum Jubilee Volunteering Awards Hosted at the Guildhall, Andover on 7th June, the Unity Platinum Jubilee Awards took place with a full house of charity groups and individuals being recognised for their volunteering efforts over the last year. Attended by a number of dignitaries, including the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr. Kent and the Test Valley Borough Council Mayoress, Cllr. Celia Dowden the evening was alight with chatting and networking not to mention a buffet and ‘Thank you from Unity’ cupcakes! The nominations had been carefully anonymised for the judges who were randomly chosen from the community and those who were shortlisted were invited to attend the evening. Shortlisted groups across a wide range of activities were promoted including Clatford Village Store, Andover Swimming & Water Polo Club and Vaccination centres all vying for the annual Team of the Year Award. The winners in this category were Koala Community Hub who provide safe, supportive, small groups in a pressure free environment for Neurodivergent children and adults.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Royal Ascot! How delighted were we to be presented with four tickets to have a wonderful day out at the races. How very exciting. Who would we see? Would we meet the Queen? Very unlikely of course, but one can always have that moment of flutter in anticipation, and probably delirium… We can all dream and have delusions of grandeur. Can’t we? Then of course, the panic hit… what on earth would we wear? Oh NO, only 3 days to go and a very prestigious event to attend. We did not panic much …. honestly! Daichi, the Modern Magazines Campervan who is used to seeing us in shorts, caps, anoraks and even wellies, was eager to see what we would look like. Well, it turns out that us girls can ‘scrub up well’ if we want to. It was a Modern Magazines girl’s trip and we were going to have fun. I did go shopping but could I find anything suitable? Absolutely not. There is something about being in a rush, really wanting to get that perfect outfit, and just not finding it when the pressure is on. Have you ever found that, or is it just my aberration? Well, I found nothing… but frustration. Now Stephen my husband has always been a life-saver in these situations. It’s a good job he is patient and gets much less distressed than me (I blame it on

The ladies arriving at Royal Ascot my hormones), or I think I would be very single by now. In my extensive bags of clothes, he found not only the dress, the handbag but also the hat! I felt a million dollars. Well that maybe a slight exaggeration, a few bob anyway. We were all set. A short drive to Mel’s where all four of us met and many photographs in the garden later (very self- gratifying) we drove out of the driveway to enjoy ourselves and walk with the rich and famous. On arriving, the whole town of Ascot was buzzing. Horse and carriages in all their glory slowed the traffic. We followed in gentle admiration. Ladies in wonderfully coloured dresses, hats and fascinators, teetering on very high heels, men in glorious top hats and tails ambled confidently along the pavements. It really was an incredible sight to behold. An English tradition that has stood the test of time. We saw a car with the number plate “Tom” on it and all four of us, being avid Top Gun fans, were desperately hoping it was Tom Cruise and of course we would meet him there. Girls hey! Even in our fifties (late fifties at that) the teenager in us was yearning to come out. It is a good job we can laugh, that is all I can say. We were privileged to have tickets for the Queen Anne Enclosure. So exciting. This meant

we could watch the horses circling the parade ring before and after the races. I absolutely loved it. I remember as a child, my grandfather every Saturday glued to the TV having made a bet… or two… or three. That unmistakable babble very much like the rhythm of those galloping hooves, blasting out of the tv, that only he seemed to understand and get very exhilarated about. His language was sometimes colourful too… My Mum’s brother had actually run away from home and never came back at the age of fifteen I think, to be a jockey. We never did know where he lived, though we met him a few times at weddings and funerals. So, here we were, placing a bet.. or two… or three. It just had to be done. I won a race! Totally beginners luck as we had great fun choosing a horse each, purely due to its name. Very technical and highly skilled of course. My winning horse was called Perfect Power and I believe Kate Middleton won on that one too, so I was in good company. Talking of which… yes, we saw William and Kate arrive on the famous straight mile. There was a huge cheer as we all saw them approaching. The arena was alive. This was by far the nearest I would ever get to our future King and his beautiful wife. The funny part is that my sister who came with us has an incredible photograph her husband found online, of William and Kate in their carriage with Sue, Mel and Julie right in the background. I have a bright red phone right in front of my whole

face where I was taking a video! Only my hat is there - hilarious and typical of me. I have great video though. The whole day was a fantastic success. Putting bets on the horses was quite something when you really have no idea on what you are doing. One bookie looked at me very sympathetically, patted me on the shoulder saying, “Just enjoy yourself, love”. Ever felt like a five-yearold, much later in life? It was all part of the atmosphere and the fun. The weather was very hot, but there was quite a breeze and my hat flying off at the top of the stairs with poor Julie chasing after it, and a man politely handing it back to her, was another one of those, ‘I am not quite in my usual comfort zone moments’, but all added to the spirit of the whole day. Spirit, well yes there was a lot of that consumed on this day and the gin stall was ever busy. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few top hats also fell off and several fascinators bounced to the ground. There were lots of swaying individuals as we were leaving. All well behaved though. So, I want to thank Abby sincerely for the tickets. We had the best girl’s day out and I thoroughly recommend Royal Ascot. It is a wonderful British occasion. Daichi wants to go next year, but he may need to lose some weight to fit into any suit, let alone a top hat… Where will he take us this summer I wonder? By Debbie Corney

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch. While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance,

garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner. Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars – but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads. Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.

The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning. Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Brush the inside of a 9-hole madeleine mould with some of the beurre noisette and set aside. 2. In the meantime, using a stand-up mixer fitted with a

paddle attachment on medium speed, beat the egg and the golden syrup until thick and light in colour. Reduce the speed and sprinkle in the flour, both sugars, salt, caraway seeds and baking powder, continue to mix until well combined. Slowly drizzle in the cool beurre noisette and the milk. 3. Pour the batter into the prepared madeleine moulds halfway up and place in the oven for approximately 10 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

For the chocolate crumb • 150g caster sugar • 70g white chocolate To finish • 100g Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Sauce 4. For the chocolate crumb, add the sugar and 75g water to a large pan, place over a medium high heat and allow the syrup to come up to 150˚C. 5. Now remove from the heat and add the white chocolate and continue to whisk. The chocolate will become foamy at first but keep whisking until it crystallizes. Pour the crystallized chocolate onto a tray lined with parchment and allow to cool completely, crushing any clumps once cool. 6. To finish, melt the chocolate sauce according to pack instructions, allowing it to cool slightly. Using a spatula, cover half of the Bath cakes with a layer of the chocolate sauce. Sprinkle some of the chocolate crumb on top. Chill until ready to serve.
