Co-op tackles food poverty in communities

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF) is delighted to announce that grants worth over £35,000 have been awarded on behalf of the Co-op Covid19 Fund, to tackle food poverty across the region. The funding has been awarded to local foodbanks, day centres and charitable organisations to ensure vulnerable people don’t go hungry during these extremely challenging times. The funding was made possible thanks to customer purchases from the Co-op picnic range, and the 13 groups to receive a grant are as follows:

New Economic Strategy Launched in the Face of Pandemic Recovery Test Valley Borough Council has launched a new interim economic development strategy for the next two years to help the local economy recuperate following the Covid-19 pandemic. Last night, at a cabinet meeting, councillors voted to approve the strategy, which sets out how the authority will help support businesses, boost the economy and look to the future for its town centres. The strategy, which will run until 2023, highlights the environment, tourism and the UK’s complete departure from the European Union as significant factors to consider for the years ahead. With the borough’s economy enduring a difficult year due to the restrictions of the pandemic, the authority’s plan includes continuing to support local businesses through funding and encouraging those in the town centre to boost their online presence. The council’s Independent Retailer Grant, first introduced in 2013, has been upgraded to £1,200 to businesses who are eligible. The strategy also highlights the need to build a stronger relationship with the EM3 for projects around Andover and Romsey, including the ongoing Town Mills scheme, and developments at the University of Southampton Science Park in Chilworth. As well as the immediate support for businesses, the strategy includes how the masterplans for Andover and Romsey could help grow the economy

in years to come. These plans for Andover include a new theatre, a riverside walk and the redevelopment of the centre itself. For Romsey, there’s the potential for new restaurant space, the enhancement of the Fishlake stream and community space, all of which could help increase footfall. The council’s plan also looks to build on the clean growth that took place during 2020 with more staff at various business working from home. The authority will also look to build on its environmental targets in the economy alongside the EM3 over the next few years. Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, councillor Phil North, said: “We are all aware of the frank circumstances that our economy is currently facing, and there’s no denying this is a difficult time. However, Test Valley is uniquely placed to recover from the current circumstances and we are determined to help our businesses in any way we can. “With many looking to holiday in the UK this year, it is important that we focus our efforts on our tourism offering with some beautiful countryside and the River Test flowing through our borough. On top of that, our work ensuring our environmental standards only increase, and our ambitious visions for both of our town centres mean businesses can still look forward to a bright future in Test Valley.”

COUNCILLORS COLUMN I write this in the week of the reintroduction of the national lockdown following the huge increase in infection rates, driven by the new Covid variant. The priority now is to get vaccinations rolled out as quickly as possible and with the goahead of the Moderna, as well as the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines I expect the programme to be ramped up quite considerably. We do not have enough evidence yet to know if the vaccines can stop transmission, but we do know it reduces deaths. That is why the priority is to first vaccinate those people for which the virus is much more likely to be fatal, which is largely driven by age. The government wants as many high-risk people as possible to be vaccinated by this coming half-term – and the early figures are promising. In the meantime, I want to repeat my thanks to all the key workers who continue doing their necessary jobs – especially those working for Test Valley Borough Council – who are keeping services going as well as paying out crucial grants to local businesses. Another part of our work that I want to focus on in more detail this month is the support we give individuals who are homeless. This is especially important considering the ongoing pandemic. We have made a pledge in Test Valley to ensure that no local resident who approaches us as homeless will have to sleep rough, without first being made an offer of emergency accommodation. We proactively make that offer to individuals we know are sleeping rough too. Unfortunately, though, the reasons for homelessness are often very complex - especially if there are health and addiction related problems involved - and some individuals affected will simply not engage with the council or accept accommodation. Any visible presence of rough sleeping can make it seem like the council aren’t supporting vulnerable people. Nothing can be further from the truth though and I can assure you that we’re constantly working hard alongside our partners offering mental health and

addiction support, to try and get people inside and for them to stay inside. Ensuring that people experiencing homelessness have access to accommodation is only a tiny part of the solution though. Preventing homelessness in the ﬁrst place has to be our mission. Last year our hardworking housing team prevented 224 households from becoming homeless and relieved homelessness for another 118. We have also developed Personalised Housing Plans for every individual who is homeless or, crucially, threatened with homelessness, which will include actions that we as a housing authority will undertake to solve the situation along with steps that our customers will need to take for themselves. Our Flexible Homelessness Prevention Fund also helps with this to target payments to prevent homelessness. Tackling the causes of homelessness is undoubtedly complex but it is our objective to ensure that as far as practicably possible, no-one should ever have to sleep rough in Test Valley.

GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count helps Hampshire land managers measure conservation success

At a time when farming and countryside management do not always get positive headlines, the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count (5 – 14 February 2021) highlights the efforts many British land managers put in to supporting wildlife on their land. The count, run by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), is a voluntary scheme that helps farmers and gamekeepers health-check their land and allows the GWCT to build a crucial national snapshot of the state of Britain’s farmland birds. “I really enjoy doing the Big Farmland Bird Count each year. It is a good break from the rigours of day-to-day commercial farming and shows how beneficial the work that so many farming colleagues do to manage the countryside and its flora and fauna,” said Tim Walters from Old Alresford in Hampshire, who regularly takes part in the count. Over two weeks in February, over a thousand of farmers, land managers and gamekeepers across the UK will be giving up 30 minutes of their own time, in a spot on their own land, to record the farmland birds they see, as part of the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. For many land managers this is the culmination of conservation work they carry out throughout the year, in all weathers.

From planting trees and hedgerows to sowing winter bird seed plots or providing supplementary feed, conservation carried out by farmers and gamekeepers often goes unrecognised. Counting the birds on their land and comparing the results to their previous year’s data allows count participants to see the effects of their efforts. By submitting their results to the GWCT, scientists can analyse which species are benefitting nationally and which are in need of help. Farm manager Tim Walters continued: “We have been taking part in various agrienvironment schemes for many years, including planting winter bird seed plots. We saw the Big Farmland Bird Count as a way of measuring the impact of this work.” Dr Roger Draycott, organiser and head of advisory services at the GWCT, explains the vital role that land managers play in conserving British wildlife: “As custodians of 71% of Britain’s countryside, farmers, land managers and gamekeepers are crucial to the survival of cherished bird species like skylarks, yellowhammers, corn buntings and wild grey partridge.”

The National Farmers Union (NFU) is sponsoring the Big Farmland Bird Count for the third year running, demonstrating the farming community’s commitment to conserving our native bird species. Despite the coronavirus pandemic and poor weather, 2020’s Big Farmland Bird Count saw record numbers of people taking part: over 1500 participants recorded more than 120 species across 1.4 million acres. “We saw a huge increase in the number of counts completed last year and we are hoping to beat those numbers again. It is not too late to sign up for this year’s count by visiting www.bfbc.org.uk,” says Roger. Encouragingly, 25 species from the Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern were recorded in 2020, with nine of them appearing in the 25 most commonly seen list and nine in the most abundant species list, including ﬁeldfares, starlings, linnets and lapwings. Blackbirds and woodpigeons were the most seen species in 2020, followed by robins, blue tits and pheasants.

Count your birds! On a day between 5 and 14 February, spend about 30 minutes recording the species and number of birds seen on one particular area of the farm.

Once you've completed your count, simply submit your results at www.bfbc.org.uk At the end of the count, the results will be analysed by the GWCT. All participants will receive a report on the national results once they have been collated.

With a shakier start to the year than many could wish, Hampshire still remains one of the most beautiful and historic counties in all of Britain. From a racecourse with an interesting heritage to a story of survival in the face of pestilence, here are ﬁve more fascinating facts from around the county.

Did you know that Tweseldown Racecourse was purchased by the British Army in 1854 during the Crimean War for use as a training ground? The Hampshire racecourse has a heritage of interesting events, including several royal visits from non other than Queen Victoria herself when she oversaw a display consisting of more than fifteen thousand troops. Several years later in 1867, Tweseldown would become an official racecourse and would later go on to host olympic events in 1948 among many other prestigious occasions. Amazingly, the Hampshire Beekeepers Association has been in existence for nearly one hundred and forty years. The Association has witnessed many changes and events, including the Isle of Wight bee disease which devastated many numbers in the area in 1904 and was said to have been the reason behind the near decimation of the British Black Bee. This disease in the bees badly affected the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Beekeepers Association and destroyed countless hives for nearly two decades. Excellently though, in the coming years, there was greater understanding of the disease and the numbers of bees and their keepers continued to grow to the thriving society it is today. 16

Did you know... The Hampshire Bat Group has reported sightings of seventeen of the eighteen species of the UK’s bat breeds? Amazingly, the Bat Group has also spotted two of some of the most rare bat breeds in the UK which can even prove elusive throughout the rest of Europe. These two rare breeds, the barbastelle and Bechstein bat have been seen in the New Forest and ongoing work is being done by the society to research and encourage more numbers in the county.

In the 1960s the coastal village of Calshot welcomed guests from the world’s most remote island Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean after a volcanic explosion forced the island’s inhabitants to seek shelter elsewhere. Although there were some social issues, causing many to return, a housing estate was built and many residents chose to stay in the Hampshire village. In memory of the kindness of the Hampshire people however, those who did return then renamed the island’s harbour after the village of Calshot!

Hampshire has often beckoned the creative talents of writers and artists and one such author was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who stayed in Emery Down for about a year to research his book, The White Company. The Sherlock Holmes author often wished to test his talents for literature in stories away from his famous detective and placed greater value on his other titles. During his stay in Hampshire, he would often be seen socialising in the village and most particularly enjoying one of the area’s many picturesque walks.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van I know we cannot get out and about as we would like to at the moment, but this trip to Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire last year reminded me that we will be able to go out again (hopefully soon) and have some family fun. Good memories can replace an actual trip for the time being. How about you look at some pleasurable photos and have a trip down memory lane yourselves? Daichi the Dashing Dude, our beloved Campervan, maybe wrapped up on the driveway and desperate to take us all out again, but he is being well behaved… for the moment! This time last year he was very playful and decided to be a Time Machine. Instead of casting with Michael J Fox, loved by many in his role as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” (excellent movies), Daichi chose me and Hayden as the lead roles, to go ‘back to the past’, to Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire. Having travelled all the way from Japan to be with us, Daichi wanted to know what it was like here in Medieval Britain. Old Wardour Castle is an English Heritage site, so as members, it was free to enter. I had not driven Daichi for quite some time and was a little nervous, as he can

Daichi taking Debbie & Hayden to Wardour be a bit flirtatious at times and does like to wave at passers by with his window wipers instead of indicating where he is going. This has nothing to do with me forgetting what I am doing of course and that the indicators are the ‘other way round’. In addition to that Daichi chose a route that was on single track roads for some of the time. Really. When we saw the bright white reverse lights of the car in front and its boot springing towards us, I was quick to react and avoided Daichi head butting the car’s rear-end. Not a pretty sight. We arrived safely and as I parked and switched off Daichi’s purring engine, the sliding side door suddenly sprang open and an apple, that had rolled out of the picnic bag, flew out! Literally. Hayden, who was giving me hand signals to help me park, laughed loudly. Daichi really was being playful and had obviously been wrapped up too long in the cold garden. Again, this was nothing to do with me pressing any wrong buttons… Old Wardour Castle is a delight. Ideal for children to run around and explore, and romantic for us oldies to look longingly at the rolling English countryside and imagine what life was like back in the 14th

Century. The ladies dreaming of those long flowing gowns and the men with shoulders back, chests puffed out and manly swords in their hands. I know that is very stereotype and I really am showing my age now. Daichi, who we know is very proud, could certainly see himself as a Mediaeval Knight in very shiny armour… This castle in fact was built when we, the English, were busy fighting the 100 Years War in France. It is a relatively safe location. Designed as a six-sided house with rooms for guests to specifically impress everyone with its status, grandeur and power. It was a house to show off who John, 5th Lord Lovell, really was. How connected he was to High Society and the Crown. Built in the fourteenth century, totally as a lavish home to entertain guests and eat like kings while beautifully placed in the peaceful countryside. The magnificent lake was full of fish and the gardens were perfectly manicured. There is no moat or high defences. The castle was built with small, slit windows on the ground floor, which seemed to display some defences, but this beautiful structure was clearly built for luxury living. You can still walk up the spiral staircase to the top of the fifth floor and marvel at the views from the windows.

Cooking is not my favourite occupation, but back in those days with two huge ﬁres, spit roasts and huge boiling pans it would have been a ‘hell’ of a job. No wonder the scullions, seen as the lowest of the low in those days, worked almost naked

- it would have been so hot! The Hall where the owners and their guests ate on the other hand had large windows and an extended door, to show their wealth and sophistication. There was a Debbie explores balcony where the grotto the musicians tunefully soothed their opulent guests below. The class difference is clearly visible. It was easy to imagine the grandeur when standing in the Great Chamber, an inner private room with even higher ceilings, where only the very important guests were invited. Sadly, The Civil War destroyed the building in 1644. There is a new castle nearby, but this magnificent building was left to stand as a romantic ruin for all to admire and now belongs to the English Heritage Trust. The Grotto in the secluded gardens is alluring. Totally man-made in 1792 by Josiah Lane of Tisbury and his father. With nooks and crannies to explore by both the young and the old. There are seats of stone, stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, algae, ivy and a curious atmosphere. We loved it. I can see why Kevin Costner came here to film “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”! That would have been exciting to see in the making. Daichi was as proud as punch that we had so much fun. Nothing like a bit of history to keep the wheels turning… and Daichi certainly likes to do just that! Where will he take us as soon as the stops are once again lifted!? By Debbie Corney

A lockdown walk

in Romsey

Start here What a beautiful day for a walk, the sun is shining … and breathe! Another lockdown walk. I have been walking with many different friends and colleagues since the beginning of lockdown. As it has been quite wet, I thought that I would take you on a fairly safe underfoot walk. I started in Romsey town, it is so very pretty with the wonderful Christmas lights still up, which we have to thank our Chamber of Commerce for this. I had a lovely fruit drink from Josie’s before my walk. This walk is about 4½ miles from the town, going up Cherville Street to the top and continue on the Stockbridge Road. This is definitely a busy road. You will reach a turning on the right where there is a footpath sign and then the noise disappears. When you see the footbridge turn left. I have to say that this is quite muddy and I would thoroughly recommend that you wear wellies or walking boots. I am scared of falling over so I have very sturdy walking boots. But, when you see the beautiful walk about to unfold, it is definitely worth it. It is a bit busy but I have been doing this walk all summer and I have met some very interesting people and there is the most

idyllic little bridge to gaze and just while away your thoughts. You will come to a right turn and that takes you to the Fishlake Meadows Nature Reserve. I always stamp my feet to get the mud off my boots here. This walk is absolutely beautiful. You usually see a few bird watchers along the way and there is no more mud. All there is to do is breathe your stress away. I have even done this walk on a dull, gloomy day and I feel so blessed that I live in such a beautiful part of the world. When you reach the gate, turn right, if you continue straight up the path, it is definitely very muddy and at the moment I wouldn’t recommend it. Even though it is cold and damp, the scenery will blow your mind, it is so, so pretty and if you’re lucky you will see the absolutely beautiful swans. I was lucky enough to have a chat with Kate and her lovely dog, Winnie. I have met Kate a few times on this walk… Continue down and on your left you will see some lovely houses! This walk will take you down to the canal I must say that, if you’re not a dog lover, this walk is probably not for you. I walk until I reach the Romsey Railway Station and carry on down, Station Road until I come to Luc’s and would stop for a sneaky coffee, if it wasn’t lockdown!! And then walk up through the town. It is such a lovely town, we are very lucky.

It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from

their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.
