Classic Novels: Are You Missing Out? Is this you?

Where to start

Most adults have not read any classic novel since their schooldays. Are you one of them? If so, you may be missing out on some wonderful experiences.

With a wider experience of both life and language, adults will bring new insights to any book they now read. This is especially – and perhaps obviously – true if the main characters are adults.

In any case, modern thinking is that each reading of any book is unique because of the experience and background the reader brings to the book. For example, I have just been re-reading the novels I shall suggest in this series of articles, and in every case I have been surprised by what I have found. I am much older now, so each novel has been a new experience.

There are many books that you could start with, and the general advice would be to choose one that is of the same type as the films or soaps that you like to watch. If you like romance, choose Jane Austen (coming in a later article). If you like thrillers, try, say, Wilkie Collins or RL Stevenson and so on.

I will try in this series to suggest books that most readers will enjoy. The first is almost impossible to read slowly, suiting most tastes, being part thriller, part Gothic, part gross realism – and of course with a touch of romance. It is especially relevant in these Covid days – or with your experience of lockdown.

It was written in 1936 but is set in the very early years of the 19th century. Try Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn.

Why read classic novels?

So why should you try reading a classic novel? Here are just a few plus points: • you will see the story and characters through your own eyes, not some film director’s • you will find it easier to relate directly to the characters than watching actors • as with any book, you will be relaxing • classic novels tend to contain much experience of life that we can now relate to If you read modern novels, no worry!

You are already used to some of those benefits. Try my first suggestion (opposite).

If you do not read, try it. At least, try it.

You may well surprise yourself.

Like all the books I shall suggest, Jamaica Inn is available quite cheaply online or in bookshops. Try just the first chapter initially. The journey in the coach reminds many of the start of Dracula. It is increasingly scary and weird for Mary.

At the end of the first chapter, consider these questions: • Can you imagine taking such a journey yourself?

• What do you think Mary is going to experience?

• What’s your first impression of Joss Merlyn?

I’ll have some more questions for you in my next article after you have had time to read this book – together with a second reading suggestion.

History: The Other Verwood I’m sure it will not come as a surprise to readers to know that Verwood got its name from the Norman “Beau Bois” and then through Fairwood to the present title. It may come as a slight surprise to know that there is another Verwood, in Canada. But what will surely come as a very big surprise is how Verwood, Canada, got its name. It is almost unbelievable – but read on!

Verwood, Saskatchewan, is seemingly miles from anywhere on the vast Canadian plains. It is 30 miles south of Old Wives Lake, a further 30 from Moose Jaw, 25 miles north of the USA border, and paradoxically just a horse ride from Crane Valley! Saskatchewan itself, at 251,700 square miles, is almost exactly 5 times the size of England; its peak population has never been more than just over one million.

Our Verwood grew from a population of 600 as a result of the Salisbury and Dorset railway spur on the Poole to Salisbury line, where they loaded the output of the brickworks and the potteries. Canada’s Verwood arose out of the building of a huge silo on the Weyburn to Assiniboa part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, where they stored and then loaded the wheat.

So, should we twin with them?

Hardly. Because the similarity ends with the railway.

Canada’s Verwood went into decline and the population has shrunk as 10

a result of mechanisation to a total of just 15 people; it is now known as an “unincorporated community”, having voted to downgrade from a “village” on 31st December 1954. It is virtually a ghost town. Most of its buildings are boarded up and only the grain elevator remains as a symbol of past importance.

So while “our” Verwood was named from the French language, how did Verwood, Canada gets its name? Astonishingly, the first dwellers decided they would call their settlement after the first person to die there. Unfortunately it was a six year old girl who, tragically, set her dress on fire as she stoked the stove to make a cup of tea for her father and died later from her burns. She was buried in the cemetery on the north side of Highway 13. Her name was Vera Wood.

Introducing... Verwoodians on Waste One of the loveliest things about living in Verwood is the community spirit - put out a “call to arms” and the community always responds positively. This is what happened in 2019 when a group of strangers got together to form “Verwoodians on Waste”, their aim being to encourage local people to reduce their reliance on plastic or where not possible, to switch to a recyclable alternative.

Through local support and generous funding from Verwood Solar Farm the group has grown quickly. They now have eleven wheely bins in the Potters Wheel Car Park in Verwood, recycling items from toothpaste tubes to biscuit wrappers, crisps packets and pet food plastic. A rota of volunteers empty the bins and post the sorted waste to Terracycle, who turn the plastic into saleable items, such as park benches.

Chair Anita Rigler said “We have expanded beyond belief. Other organisations are welcome to host a new recycling bin to fundraise for their own cause. Verwood First School recycle writing implements and makeup for example, whilst Macmillan Caring Locally collect empty domestic ink cartridges.”

Leanne Seward The group also supports and enjoys strong links with neighbouring initiatives such as Litter Free Dorset, by supplying litter picking kits for use by local people, and most currently, their “Choose To Reuse” campaign - a Dorset wide initiative to encourage coffee shop lovers to ditch the use of disposable cups in favour of a reusable one.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g caster sugar • 175g self-raising flour • 3 medium eggs • Grated zest and juice from 1 small orange, plus extra zest to decorate • 75g ground almonds • 125g ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped • Icing sugar, to dust TIP If the top of the cake starts to overbrown before the end of the cooking time, cover loosely with a piece of foil.

Get the kettle on and enjoy a slice of this delicious fruity loaf cake.

1. Preheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas mark 3. Grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin and line the base and two long sides with baking paper.

2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and the orange rind and juice in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined. Toss together the ground almonds and apricots and fold into the mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes - 1 hour 10 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar and decorated with the extra orange zest.

Understanding Investments: Pension Options at Retirement

Retirement, and the associated ceasing of the ability to earn an income, can be a scary thought and is certainly a huge decision.

Understanding the effect of inflation on your income needs throughout retirement (at 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) and other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. There are more choices than you might think!

Retirement Income is divided into secure income and flexible income. Secure income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods.

You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is expected to increase to 57 in 2028 and remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have five broad choices and for each option, 25% of your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. Secure Income - Annuity Exchange your pension savings for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependant’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax.

2. Secure Income - Temporary Annuity Little known but can be very attractive for those who want to retire early. Can provide a higher guaranteed income for a specific number of years (perhaps until other

pensions such as the State Pension commence) to allow the Howard Goodship balance of pension funds to remain invested. Annuity income is subject to income tax.

3. F lexi-Access Drawdown Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax.

4. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax.

5. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75).

As you can see, there is now significant choice available and pension savings are another tax advantageous wrapper to consider alongside other tax efficient products including ISAs. Lockdown Life: Keeping busy...

Well, I am now a few months past celebrating my 80th birthday (though this was originally written a little beforehand in December last year) and I am a model engineer.

Since April 2020, I have completed a model beam engine and more recently a Christmas decoration (the style of which is very popular in Germany). The decoration is one metre high and contains rotating tables. I made the complete unit (except the figurines in the three levels) and it was functioning in a front bedroom window for a short while most evenings over the festive period.

Although this year may not be shaping up as many of us may have hoped, Dorset continues to shine as the wonderful county it is. From a village saved from devastation to the UK’s oldest blueberry farm, to celebrate the county, here are another five interesting facts to showcase Dorset at its finest and most interesting.

Tragically the soldier, diplomat, archeologist and author died in the county following a motorcycle accident. However Thomas Edward Lawrence’s mark will forever be left on Dorset as Clouds Hill, his idyllic cottage, was his very favourite place to relax. Now taken care of by the National Trust, the cottage is open to the public and remains almost completely untouched since the great man himself left it.

Did you know that the Weymouth Royal National Lifeboat Institution has been in existence for more than one hundred and fifty years after it was opened in the latter 1860s? As one of the busiest stations in the country, the need for a lifeboat was realised in the 19th century by the then Earl of Strafford who personally donated funds to be able to build a station. Other lifeboats from nearby Portland had serviced the town’s coast however it was not until the early months of 1869 that Weymouth’s station was to be completed and opened.

Not only was David Trehane willing and able to grow blueberries in Dorset’s soil but he was able to see the potential for a business. Remarkably, as his blueberry farm is an organic pick your own, the blueberries available to harvest today were actually planted as far back as 1965!

It was in the August of 1348 that a ship from France carrying the plague landed in Dorset, bringing with it more than a cargo of fine goods. As infection rates reached unprecedented heights, among the badly impacted areas was the Isle of Portland as well as Poole whose communities suffered considerably.

Boasting a history that dates back millenia and has played an interesting role in Dorset’s economic heritage, one day in the late summer of 1865, a fire nearly ravaged all of Evershot after hot ashes were not properly extinguished and quickly engulfed the nearby carpenter’s home. A total of eighteen houses were burnt down and yet, in a fitting way, Evershot’s near destruction also forged a way ahead, with the community rallying around those made homeless.

Although autumn is viewed as the best time for planting, trees, shrubs, climbers or herbaceous plants will have enough time to get established if planted now. Plan a shopping trip to fill garden spaces with colour, shape or perfume.

inches wider than the root ball all round, and fork the base and sides of the hole over thoroughly, especially in clay – where you should prepare the soil with a fork, as this causes less compaction of the soil than using a spade.

Start by digging or forking the soil over and removing pernicious weeds or debris. Measure the available spaces so that the chosen plant does not outgrow its new home too quickly, and make a note of how sunny or shaded the spot is.

If the soil is either heavy clay or extremely light and sandy, dig a bigger hole, gradually incorporating more of the ‘natural’ soil into the compost or planting mix as you near the sides of the hole.

There should be a good selection of shrubs to choose from right now that will provide springtime colour – perhaps a flowering currant with flower trusses in red or pink, a star magnolia, Magnolia stellate, with white or palest pink star-shaped flowers, or, if you have space, an amelanchier, great value because they have tiny, very pretty white flowers with foliage in fiery shades come autumn. On acidic soils or in a good-sized pot of ericaceous compost, camellias perform well and their large flowers in reds, pinks, yellows and white look great. There is also Exochorda macrantha, ‘The Bride’, with delightful arching stems studded with tiny white flowers; the list goes on and on.

Before planting, remove the pot and firmly tease out the roots – soaking the root ball in a bucket of water for an hour or two helps if they are quite congested and is essential for the plant to get properly established. Prune out any really large, woody roots encircling the root ball to release the remainder of the roots.

Plant your purchases as soon as possible. Dig a good-sized hole for each, making it several

Finally, stand back and check the stem is upright. Make a note of the plant’s precise name and details, or remove the label and keep it somewhere safe, so you know how to look after your plant and how big it may grow!

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g caster sugar • 175g self-raising flour • 3 medium eggs • Grated zest and juice from 1 small orange, plus extra zest to decorate • 75g ground almonds • 125g ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped • Icing sugar, to dust TIP If the top of the cake starts to overbrown before the end of the cooking time, cover loosely with a piece of foil.

Get the kettle on and enjoy a slice of this delicious fruity loaf cake.

1. Preheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas mark 3. Grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin and line the base and two long sides with baking paper.

2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and the orange rind and juice in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined. Toss together the ground almonds and apricots and fold into the mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes - 1 hour 10 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar and decorated with the extra orange zest.

“How are you getting on with that new fella of yours?” Linda had just popped round for coffee at her best friend Debbie’s house.

“That’s mine,” Linda blushed and snatched the item from Linda. “I’ll hand wash that, don’t want to send the whole load pink.”

“Great thanks,” Debbie said, stuffing a basketload of dirty laundry into the washing machine.

“He’s coming round for a Valentine’s Day takeaway later, so I’d better get this lot washed, dried and pressed.”

“And did you go and visit him in hospital?” Linda asked casually.

“Crikey, he’s not got you doing his washing already?” Linda spluttered. The basket was full of men’s Hawaiian shirts, white chinos and underwear. It all looked brand new and very expensive. “Can’t he do it himself?”

“He’s just come out of hospital,” Debbie said. “So I offered to help.”

“Why, what’s been wrong with him?”

Linda frowned.

“He told me not to. Didn’t want to worry me.”

“I’ll bet.” Linda regarded her friend. Debbie had a big heart, and deserved to be happy, but some no-good bloke was taking her for a ride.

The doorbell rang and Debbie jumped up to answer it. While she was gone Linda quickly opened the washing machine door, threw in the boob tube and switched the machine on.

Let’s see how this charmer liked having all his designer gear turned pink.

“Would you look at this!” Debbie returned with a bouquet of red roses. “Aren’t they beautiful?”

“He was having a procedure; I didn’t like to ask.”

Debbie mouthed the words, “Men’s business.”

“So what’s all this, then?” Linda said, holding up a pair of Bermuda shorts. “He likes his designer labels doesn’t he?”

“Stunning,” Linda remarked as she watched the washing machine quickly fill up with dark pink water.

“The clothes he had in hospital,” Debbie said.

“Yes, he likes his fashion, spends a lot of money on it.”

Debbie put the flowers on the draining board and opened a small envelope. “It says ‘Sorry I lied about being in hospital.’”

Linda spotted a pair of Lycra swimming trunks.

“Are you telling me he wore those in hospital?”

“I knew it!” Linda slapped the table.

“He said they had the heating turned right up,” Debbie said. “Was like the tropics, he said.”

Linda frowned. She suspected that her friend was being taken for a mug. It sounded more like this new boyfriend had been for a week away in the Mediterranean.

“And whose is this?” She lifted out a shocking pink boob tube.

Debbie looked up from the card, her eyes sparkling. “It says ‘I have a big surprise for you.’

I have to pack my bags because he’s just bought a villa in Spain and we’re flying out tonight.” She stooped to stop the washing machine. “I’d better change this to a quick wash or it’ll never get done in time.”

“Ah yes,” Linda sipped her coffee sheepishly, “about that.”

Go green in style with our guide to creating a beautiful indoor garden in any room.

House plants look amazing, adding colour, pattern, texture, interesting forms and a feeling of vibrancy. They can fill a dull corner, provide soft screening and help dampen noise. The Royal Horticultural Society reports that indoor plants have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce fatigue and headache.

Intriguingly, patients in hospital rooms containing plants report decreased post-operative pain.

The psychological benefits include the satisfaction of nurturing a small seedling to a healthy, mature plant, as well as the pleasure of watering, misting and pruning, while the RHS says that house plants have been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, increase productivity and potentially lengthen attention span. Plants make us feel good.

What plants to choose?

Select plants suited to homes, where it is shadier and temperature fluctuations are greater than in their normal habitat. Good examples include the spider plant, the Boston fern, several varieties of dracaena, Sansevieria trifasciata, rubber plants (ficus elastica), peace lilies (spathiphyllum), aspidistra and ivy. Succulents and cacti tend to be relatively easy to care for and come in a range of shapes and sizes.

For fashion followers, the most-discussed plants on Reddit in 2020 included the pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, hoya and peperomia. On the other hand, the world’s most Instagrammed houseplants include the Swiss cheese plant (monstera deliciosa), fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata), Chinese money plant, snake plant and money tree.

Where to put your house plants Generally plants need good light (but not bright, direct sunlight) and should be away from heat sources, draughts and cold. Darker rooms like bathrooms need shade-tolerant plants. Provide a stable, waterproof base, and keep harmful plants away from children and pets. Huge statement plants look incredible in hallway, living room or dining room corners, or group several plants together for a similar effect. Place smaller plants on tables or use tall planters, or put a row of small plants on a mantelpiece, shelf or window ledge, or dot them among books and vases in a bookcase. Hang them from the ceiling, stage them in steps, or pop them on wall racks. Grouping in odd numbers looks best, and a range of widths and heights looks relaxed. Opt for varying shades of leaf colours or try a more regulated appearance, and contrast leaf shapes for natural variety.
