Godshill Village Hall Dresses Up! The refurbishment of Godshill Village Hall was on display to most of the residents of Godshill on Saturday 11 July when a Tea Party to celebrate the Hall – and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – was held. The decorated Hall was seen at its most charming when dressed up for a party! The newly completed upgrade of the WCs, accessible ramp and side door were shown off along with all the other facilities of the Hall which were in use – catering, sound system, fairy lights, outdoor marquee and amenity space. Villagers were invited for an afternoon tea, and enter a competition for the best royal headdress. Homemade scarecrows were also on display in the marquee. Andy Howe provided music

to complete the relaxed ambience. Local artists displayed their work to celebrate the occasion: commemorative wooden ‘medals’ were created by Max the Woodie of Godshill Wood, and the Hall’s decorations were enhanced by the beautiful floral compositions from Sam Chaplin of The New Forest Cutting Garden. JMBs in the Quomp Taken in c.1934

Following its time as a collar and cuff factory, the 19th century building in the Quomp took on another surprising use when it became the factory of JMB Motors Ltd. The company was founded in 1933 by George Jones, designer of the OK Supreme motorcycle, Ray Mason and Cecil Barrow, a Ringwood man who owned a motorcycle shop in Lymington, hence their initials JMB for the name of the company.

The 1934 photo, looking towards College Road, shows a batch of JMBs lined up in front of the factory, facing directly onto the Quomp. There were two models, the standard Gazelle model priced at 72 guineas (£75.60p) and the Mustang model at 87 guineas (£91.35p). About 100 three-wheelers were produced before business closed down around 1935/36 due to the financial state of the country. After the closure the factory was demolished except for what is now Old Stream House, today a private house with a new door and window at ground floor level. This was the part of the factory shown on the right of the 1934 photo, before its brickwork was painted. Its height and tall first floor window are a clue to how the rest of the factory must have once appeared. In the late 1930s a line of houses were built on the site by Barrow Brothers. Unlike the factory, the houses were set further back from the road.

Cecil was the youngest son of Harry Barrow who was the co-owner of the builder’s yard in The JMB is not forgotten as in 2009 one car the Quomp, now Barrows Mews. In 1933 Harry returned home to Ringwood and was driven in the Barrow bought the freehold of Bull Hall and Carnival parade. the empty factory opposite his yard from Kings College Cambridge. Presumably Cecil was either allowed by his father to use this factory for his new enterprise or else the JMB company rented it. According to local historian Tony White, the JMB had two wheels at the front with a chain drive to the single rear wheel with an air-cooled JAP motorcycle engine and gearbox. This was mounted on a wooden chassis with a fabric two-seater body. Its appearance was similar to a Morgan three-wheeler. In 1935 a new model of the car incorporated a tubular steel chassis with independent front suspension.

An agent for change Why preservation of both people, and the planet, is the next venture for Amal Clooney. Amal Clooney is best known for human, not environmental, advocacy; yet it was at the Greenbuild 2018 Conference that we saw, for the ﬁrst time, a new side to the human rights lawyer. It was one that followed the conference’s mantra that we can only solve society’s ills by proper intersection of humanity and the wider environment.

Quite simply, it is not what she has committed two decades to specialising in; and yet, in a sense, that makes her interest all the more commendable. “The pursuit of human rights is one that is intrinsically linked to the pursuit of the environment, because both are equally dependent on each other,” she begins. “If we are not at one with ourselves, we are never going to move forward into the next realm which is to look after the environment. “And when climate change itself is impacting the basics of what we have… when it is leading to ﬂooding, unstable food supplies, drought, wildﬁres and hurricanes, then this, quite obviously, leads to a human crisis in the world, whereby all of these elements contribute to the increase in refugees

Carry on camping How to ensure a camping trip means going back to nature… rather than going back home early. Wonderful Watervoles Water voles are Britain’s largest voles, with fully grown adults reaching lengths of 20cm (plus a 12cm tail) and weighing up to 350g. They are charismatic little creatures with a round face, blunt nose, short furry tail and glossy dark brown or black fur.

body weight every day. Their diet consists mainly of grasses and waterside plants, plus twigs, bulbs, roots and fallen fruit.

Despite their name, water voles are not particularly well-adapted to aquatic life. They’ve evolved to live alongside water and their characteristic ‘plop’ is the sound of them diving into water to escape predators and access the underwater entrance to their burrow. But they are clumsy swimmers and lack rudder-like tails or webbed feet that other waterloving creatures have evolved.

They aren’t too picky and have been recorded feeding on up to 220 different plants.

Burrowing and breeding Water voles live in burrows, which they build by biting into the banks with very strong, enamel-coated orange teeth. These burrows can be complex and consist of nesting and nursing chambers, with two entrances, one on the bank and one underwater. A water vole burrow is roughly the width of a balled-up fist or a tennis ball. During winter, water voles live in family groups in their burrows; but become very territorial during breeding season between April and October. Water voles are extremely successful breeders with a gestation of just 23 days! Pups leave the nest after three weeks and can breed at just 15 weeks old. One female water vole can have up to 30 babies in a single breeding season. Water voles have a very short lifecycle and don’t usually live for more than one winter.

Water voles in decline Sadly, water voles are one of the UK’s fastest declining mammals with up to 90% of the population lost since the 1970s due to habitat loss and fragmentation and the introduction of American mink. Water voles are predated by native animals like otters, buzzards, owls, and foxes but can cope by breeding rapidly and escaping into their burrows. A female mink, however, is slim enough to follow water voles into their burrows and kill entire populations. Fortunately, it’s not too late for water voles. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is helping water vole populations recover in our two counties through reintroductions, coordinating national projects and managing our nature reserves with water voles in mind. Winnall Moors in Winchester boasts good water vole numbers as the banks are protected and no dogs are allowed in the nature reserve to disturb them

Trusts and Trust Registration Service deadline The deadline for registering express trusts with the Trust Registration Service (TRS) for the first time is September 1st 2022. This will include many off the shelf estate planning trusts such as gift trusts, discounted gift trusts and loan trusts that previously didn’t require registration. Existing trusts which have tax to pay (and currently complete an annual tax return) should have already registered, as the TRS is the mechanism by which trustees obtain the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) needed to submit a self-assessment return. An express trust is a trust deliberately created by a settlor, usually in writing. They may be taxable or non-taxable. The majority of trusts recommended by financial advisers for tax and estate planning will be UK express trusts as they will usually use a deed from a product provider. These will often be non-taxable as the trust investment will be in life policies, including investment bonds, which do not produce natural income (capital withdrawals of 5% or less do not count as taxable income). Such trusts must now be registered by September 1st 2022 (or 90 days after creation if later) unless they are “excluded”. They will then be provided with a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) if they are required to pay tax or a URN (Unique Reference Number) if they aren’t required to pay tax. “Excluded” trusts include pure protection policies where the only benefit is a sum assured paid out on 22

The legal responsibility for registering falls on the trustees. They will need details of settlors, beneficiaries and provide information on the assets held within the trust. They can do this themselves or appoint an agent to complete the registration.

We strongly suggest you contact your financial adviser or accountant to discuss this as a matter of urgency. The Humble Bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet. The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast. Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities. Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require crosspollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant. Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some ﬂowers to bloom earlier or

later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly ﬂowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides. The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness. You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees ﬂourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted. An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge. Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the difference between decorative and functional. The other day I found myself having a conversation about clocks, and it dawned on me how our reliance on them in the home has changed so much over the years. The reason for this is obvious – we have watches, phones, laptops, and various other timing devices scattered about our personal space. The era of having to get up and walk into another room to discover we’re late for the train, is long gone. There feels some justice in that, too. After all, the humble wall clock was, for many years, viliﬁed in its role in reminding us that we were behind schedule. It must be relieved to know that now, in 2022, it serves a new purpose – it is an aesthetic choice; it is a timeless interior addition that alludes to a tradition of sophistication and style - content, simply, to sit smugly in the background of household life, faithfully ticking

away the seconds ad inﬁnitum.

Its riling raison d’être aside, there was a time when large clocks were considered emblems of opulence; and although the clamour for small and sleeker accessories has relegated the wall clock to an afterthought, there’s a case for arguing this timeless timepiece can add an eye-catching allure to any contemporary space. The clock is, in many ways, a piece of moving, evolving art. It can exaggerate, calm or simply just sympathise with a wall. It can bring out colours and connect furniture, items and artwork in genre or era or style. Even if you’re hoping to emulate uber-minimalist interiors, an elegant or oversized wall clock can offer a break from potential

monotony while still appearing a natural extension of its surroundings and theme. Designers now treat these creations as art pieces – ditching the rounded constraints or traditional elements to drag the timing device into the present. Whichever way you look at it, wall clocks belong in a different era, though that tangible link between functional and decorative is one that we should consider across a number of objects and a number of rooms in our homes. The truth is, a good home, or house, or space, should combine the two. We need things around us that add to the feeling of being provided for us, yet at the same time we want to enjoy that elegance and beautiﬁcation. The secret to any space is ﬁnding the correct ratio between the two, and that sometimes can be easier said than done. Good luck!

The Last Man to walk on the Moon Looking back 50 years to the moment Eugene Cernan boarded Apollo 17, homeward bound, in the process becoming the last person to set foot on the surface of the moon. When Eugene Cernan boarded Apollo 17 in 1972, few could have imagined the moon’s surface would remain untouched by man again for all of five decades. After all, in the three years preceding it, 10 others had made the journey and experienced the sensation of touching down on the Earth’s only natural satellite. The ability to reach an orb that had mystified people for thousands of years almost created a normalising of space travel, and from there we were supposed to look further. In fairness, we have – such is the technology today that unmanned missions can reach well beyond the confines of what human participation makes possible, yet it is with a certain level of sadness that the ultimate journey, one fantasised over by astronauts, authors, filmmakers and generations of children all across the world, is one that has been five decades without repeat.

Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17, and set off with his three-man crew to venture to the moon on December 7th. He was joined by Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans orbited above. The crew remained at the moon for 75 hours, making three moonwalks, each of around seven hours. At the end of the third, and just before the module was set to leave, Cernan dropped to one knee and etched his daughter’s initials, ‘TDC’, on the moon’s surface; and because there is no wind nor atmosphere present, those letters will likely remain there forever. The trio began the return journey on December 16th, with the trip back to Earth taking three days. They landed safely in the South Paciﬁc Ocean.

Further missions had been planned to the moon, but even before Apollo17’s departure, NASA had already cancelled Apollo 18 and 19 because of congressional cuts. There was also a feeling after the Apollo 13 emergency that NASA risked having its entire manned space program cancelled if a crew was lost on another Apollo mission. Cernan passed away in January 2017; Evans had died aged 57 in 1990. Harrison Schmitt, who from 1977 to 1983 was United States Senator from New Mexico, is the lone survivor, joining only three other men who have walked on the moon (Aldrin, Apollo 11; David Scott, Apollo 15; and Charles Duke, Apollo 16), to still live today.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at keeping our money safe online. Staying one step ahead of the fraudsters isn’t a battle just reserved for those who patrol the internet. The unregulated nature of the world’s biggest information source means we need to take control of our own vigilance. The good news is that by following a few easy steps, you can protect yourself from the dark forces at work across the web. Firstly, when visiting a site, in the web address at the top, look for an ‘s’ after ‘http’ at the beginning of the line. The lack of an ‘s’ doesn’t directly imply you are on a scam website, but it is telling you that the

security certiﬁcate is inadequate, and you should refrain from entering personal information. Some browsers – Google Chrome being one – add a padlock icon denoting any website that is fully secure, or the web address could be shown in green. The highest form of encryption for any site will show the website name before the address, also. Mostly, ask yourself if what’s being offered is realistic. On the internet, just as in real life, if something you see online appears too good to be true – particularly if you’ve clicked on an advert or had a popup appear on your screen – it probably is. Also have a look for how well written and presented the site is. There is a very real correlation between the

trustworthiness of a site and the attention paid to spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may not surprise you to hear that few scammers are fully adept in the ﬁner workings of the English language, particularly if that site is being run many thousands of miles from the UK, and authentic marketing will almost always look professional in style and content. Furthermore, as much as Google may at times frustrate us by offering a multitude of options that are almost bewildering in number, it remains a great source for checking what we know. So if a site looks suspicious put its name into Google. If it’s a known rogue business then there’s a good chance it’s being discussed across the web. Finally, if you are purchasing online, use a credit card or trackback ﬁnancial tool, such as PayPal. That way if something does go awry, you have the security of reclaiming your money.

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch. While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance,

garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner. Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars – but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads. Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.

The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning. Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Ingredients (serves 4) For the cake • 50g beurre noisette, plus a couple of extra tablespoons for the mould (see cook’s tip) • 1 large Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg • 30g golden syrup • 60g plain ﬂour • 30g icing sugar, sifted • 10g caster sugar • 1 pinch of salt • 3g caraway seeds, toasted • 4g baking powder • 15ml whole milk

People assume that because my recipes are complex and rich in detail, they are impossible to replicate, but the truth about food is you can invest as much or as little as you like in the process, and even my recipes are based on simple concepts, so never feel afraid to try something different.

Method

Cook’s Tip To make the beurre noisette, melt unsalted butter over a gentle heat, whisking continuously until the solids turn golden brown and smell nutty. Remove from the heat, strain the butter through a coffee ﬁlter and store in the fridge. 1. To make the bath cakes, preheat the oven to 190˚C, gas mark 5. Brush the inside of a 9-hole madeleine mould with some of the beurre noisette and set aside. 2. In the meantime, using a stand-up mixer ﬁtted with a

paddle attachment on medium speed, beat the egg and the golden syrup until thick and light in colour. Reduce the speed and sprinkle in the ﬂour, both sugars, salt, caraway seeds and baking powder, continue to mix until well combined. Slowly drizzle in the cool beurre noisette and the milk. 3. Pour the batter into the prepared madeleine moulds halfway up and place in the oven for approximately 10 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

For the chocolate crumb • 150g caster sugar • 70g white chocolate To finish • 100g Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Sauce 4. For the chocolate crumb, add the sugar and 75g water to a large pan, place over a medium high heat and allow the syrup to come up to 150˚C. 5. Now remove from the heat and add the white chocolate and continue to whisk. The chocolate will become foamy at first but keep whisking until it crystallizes. Pour the crystallized chocolate onto a tray lined with parchment and allow to cool completely, crushing any clumps once cool. 6. To finish, melt the chocolate sauce according to pack instructions, allowing it to cool slightly. Using a spatula, cover half of the Bath cakes with a layer of the chocolate sauce. Sprinkle some of the chocolate crumb on top. Chill until ready to serve.
