Dear Poole, Wow, what a summer of events we have all had. Hasn’t it been great! We here at Dorset Publications and The Poole Directory were part of the Drug Free World campaign where we sponsored 1000’s of Truth About Drugs booklets given out in Weymouth during the Olympics and also at the Bournemouth Carnival. You can see some of our photos inside. The Jive Aces, the UK’s Number One swing band, were our fantastic entertainment for the day! There has also been the famous Bournemouth Air Festival, Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset County Show. Not forgetting last, but by no means least, the completely awe-inspiring Paralympics! I think the summer has ended with a real celebration. Did you notice, as there was much less bad news expressed during the Olympics that the whole of Britain came alive. Maybe we can learn from that. Anyway… Back to school for some now and back to work for the rest of us. Here in The Poole Directory there are interesting articles to read and of course our local business and trade’s people all ready to help you. During these interesting times it is really important to support each other. All of the advertisers inside appreciate greatly the work that you give them. Please do mention The Poole Directory when making any calls. I hope you all have a fabulous September.

Keeping the Jive alive! The Jive Aces, regarded as UK’s No.1 Jive & Swing band, have been together for over 15 years and famously put BGT boss Simon Cowell “in a good mood” and had him singing along with their high-energy performance on this year’s Britain’s Got Talent. The band got into the semi-finals performing show-stopping versions of Jungle Book favourites “I Wanna Be Like You” and “Bare Necessities”, which was praised by their favourite judge Alesha Dixon who said “You are so joyful to watch, every single one of you, especially you on the piano. Great, great song choice, nothing obvious about it. You had fun so we had fun. That was world class!”. The Jive Aces lead singer said: “This was amazing we got this far on BGT, we made it all the way through from over 60 000 contestants down to the last 45 and we did it! We were surprised that a men’s band (as opposite to a boys band) got this far! This is probably the first time ever that a swing band got this fa r , s o w e a r e v er y p r o u d o f o u r achievement!” The yellow suited sextet feature songs made famous by greats like Louis Prima, Bobby Darin, Big Joe Turner and Sammy Davis Jr as well as some superb originals. An incredibly in demand sextet, they have worked with John Travolta, Van Morrison, The Proclaimers, Keely Smith and have performed for HRH Prince Philip. They also performed for the Queen at the occasion one of her Diamond Jubilee British towns tour in Bromley, where they performed a song they wrote for her “Diamond Jubilee” together with the nation’s loved Swingtime Sweethearts. The lyrics of the song are catchy had the crowd singing and dancing along repeating to HM “Diamond Jubilee, Everyone say Thank you Ma’am, it’s the Diamond Jubilee”.

We COOK so you don’t have to... For all our good intentions, few of us have the time to cook a meal wort hy of Masterc h ef every evening. And while we all love the idea of friends coming over for dinner, the preparation and cooking of a posh meal can escalate into a time-consuming and expensive stress-fest. COOK on Poole Road in Westbourne is therefore reason to celebrate. COOK has garnered numerous awards and media accolades for making food that looks and tastes homemade – in fact, it might even be a bit better than you could manage yourself. What’s even more remarkable is that all its meals are frozen and go straight from your freezer into the oven or microwave. COOK’s founding principle 15 years ago was to make food using exactly the same techniques and ingredients that a good domestic cook would use at home, so e v e r y th i n g l o o k s a n d t as t e s

homemade. Today, nothing has changed and COOK continues to make its meals by hand at its kitchen in Kent. As proof of the food’s hand-prepared nature, the name of the individual chef who cooked each dish is printed on the packaging. Its range of meals extends from kids food, to over 80 different meals for one, plus meals for two, four and six along the lines of dishes you’d expect to find in a gastro pub or restaurant, such as Sea Bass with Asparagus Tips and Linguine in a Lobster and Saffron Bisque, or Roasted Confit of Duck with a Juniper Berry Sauce. There are plenty of classic, everyday British recipes; a brilliant Indian range to challenge the best your local takeaway has to offer; and some truly indulgent puddings and cakes. And because COOK’s meals come in

portions for one, two or four (and some dishes feed many more), it’s the perfect way to entertain with the minimum amount of stress or fuss. Ultimately, the food speaks for itself. As one happy customer put it: “I love cooking and that’s why I love COOK. Good food, cooked as I would.” So, if you enjoy good home-cooked food and take pleasure from eating well, then come down to COOK on Poole Road in Westbourne and we will be delighted to see you. Home Delivery available just ring the shop on 01202 765560.

Talking about Wildlife

Talking about wildlife with

Walk for Wildlife On the 23rd September, join us for the Dorset Walk for Wildlife. This year, this annual fundraising event for walkers of all levels and ages returns to Purbeck by popular demand. There are three routes to choose from, ranging from 6 to 22 miles. They will all start from Leeson House, a beautiful manor house situated in the village of Langton Matravers near Swanage. Each route will lead walkers along the coastline, giving everyone a chance to explore the famous Purbeck area: Dancing Ledge if you choose to walk 6 miles, St Aldhem’s Head if you choose 12 miles and Kimmeridge Bay for those who tackle 22. All walkers will pass through Durlston Country Park with its picturesque views and a castle, so make sure you take a camera! A little further down the road,

walkers will pass Anvil Point Lighthouse, which is built of local stone. For those with children, there will be exciting and educational activities on your return. The grounds of Leeson House will also be open to explore, making this a fantastic day out for the whole family. You can register and start fundraising today. Go online and visit the website dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/ walkforwildlife and you can use the links to set up an online charity sponsorship page. Alternatively, you can download a charity fundraising form. If you plan to walk in a group, you can set up a group page - you can even set one up for your canine friends! The money you raise will help us conserve Dorset’s wildlife. Walkers can also register from 7am on the day at Leeson House.

Drug Free message at Bournemouth Carnival Stephen and I here at Dorset Publications, publishers of The Poole Directory, were proud sponsors of the Drug Free World entry at the Bournemouth Carnival, which happened last month. 5,000 “Truth About Drugs” booklets were given out in the streets by more than 25 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. The Jive Aces, the UK’s No. One Swing Band who recently got into the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent were our fantastic entertainment and we won first place for the best dressed float! The Jive Aces are internationally known and regularly play at local venues here in the South. They are amazing! You can see them at www.jiveaces.com. The whole day at the Carnival was great fun, well organised and very up beat. The sun was shining and a

great day was had by all. We hope you enjoy the photos! Other sponsors of the Drug Free World at The Bournemouth Carnival were Chatfield’s Garden Services, Corecroft Business Services, The Church of Scientology in Poole and Shears Bros Transport Ltd based at Hurn airport who very kindly loaned us their truck and driver for the day. We thank all the sponsors! Dorset Publications also sponsored the Drug Free World campaign in Weymouth during the Olympics. You can see myself and Hayden here with two policemen! We had great fun giving these booklets out. In total, with an incredible team of 35 volunteers we gave out over 40,000 Truth About Drugs booklets in two weeks. This programme is extremely popular as it educates the young on the effects of

Find us online at www.thepooledirectory.co.uk taking drugs. Here is what the Drug Free World organisation says about their App which can be downloaded for free… The best solution to the drug problem is education. Much of what kids hear on the streets about drugs comes from those selling them. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World provides educators with practical tools to give youth solid facts which enable them to choose to lead drug-free lives all on their own. No one questions the severity of the drug problem and its devastating impact on youth. Academic results suffer and, even worse, drugs undermine health and destroy young lives. The best solution is to reach young people with effective, fact-based drug education—before they start experimenting with drugs. Tweens, teens and young adults who know the facts

27

about drugs are much less likely to start using them. This Truth About Drugs Education application is the ideal supplemental aid. It fills the growing demand for practical tools to help the teacher, instructor or drug prevention specialist communicate the truth about drugs swiftly and effectively. The application features full lesson plans, assignments and classroom activities that capture and retain young people's attention—and elicit their participation. Students willingly read, view and, most importantly, use the information to make the right choices about drugs. Whether you are a young adult, a teacher or a parent Stephen and I hope you take advantage of using this Drug Free World App if you have an IPhone or IPad or you can go online to www.drugfreeworld.org. The data is excellent!
