Dear Oakdale, Happy Halloween! Do Stephen and I look pretty scary? This was us at a party last year. It certainly was a good excuse to let our hair down. Library Garden Scoops 2nd Prize A Wildlife-friendly garden at Oakdale Library, created by Creekmoor with Oakdale W.I. and Cultural Volunteers, has come second in the Dorset Wildlife Trust Awards. This is an additional award to the ‘Poole Achievement Award’ presented in February 2013. The Bookerie Garden came second in the School/Community section of the annual competition run by the Dorset Wildlife Trust, in which gardens were assessed on what had been done to provide for wildlife and the amount of efforts put into creating wildlife habitats. The Reading Garden which opened in August 2013, has a curving lawn with seats placed along with trellising to make private areas. The plants are bird, bee, moth and butterfly friendly, there are bird and bat boxes and a water feature as well as an insect mansion. The garden is well used for story-times, children’s activities, and community events, as well as a quiet place to sit and read with a drink from the Library. The Garden came about after Creekmoor with Oakdale W.I. President Jan Ayrton, a keen gardener herself, discovered that the National Federation was keen to sponsor groups willing to work in their local community to create gardens. The Institute prepared a detailed proposal to gain the grant, but it was for planting only, so together with the Library Volunteers they set
about to raise funds for the other items needed, but the local business in the area came to the fore and supplied and fixed the trellising, the archway and gate, and local people donated benches and other items needed. Cherry Tree Nursery provided the majority of the planting in the garden at a very reasonable price. On winning the Award, Jan said “This is another accolade for all the hard work done by the ‘Garden Gang’. It is brilliant!” The W.I. and Volunteers continue to care for the garden on a weekly basis. Both awards are displayed in Oakdale Library.

Engelbert – “It is, and so many I enjoyed Smokey Robinson, Neil Sedaka and Gene Simmons... all were so helpful, and together I am very blessed with this album. It’s the album that I think will define me in years to come... Well hopefully.” Ann – It’s been well received and already a huge chart hit – thoughts? Engelbert – “You know Ann every album is always a worry, but to get this kind of reaction at this stage of my career is simply super, I had no idea, and we have been so stunned in that respect, but it’s also so nice... Ann – What is next for you? Engelbert – “I am touring again and doing dates all over the world, I love to travel, and never tire of it, but then after that starting work on the next album, which is going to be called ”Engelbert Redialled“ as we have more duets that we could not fit on the first album, I am touring so look out for dates, and then we start recording again.” Ann – Finally a message for your fans here in the UK... Remember the late great Dickie Valentine... well he had to pull out of the TV show “Sunday Night at the London Palladium “ and they gave me the slot. He thanked me for helping him out, and that really was the start of it all. You could say in fact it’s because of him I am here today... PALS Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), based in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, offers advice, handles complaints and helps solve a range of issues. Their office has been redesigned recently so patients and visitors can drop in and sit with a member of the team, rather than talking to them at a counter. PALS Co-ordinator, Jennie Moffat, says: “We wanted to make it more open and welcoming but also to be able to provide an environment where people who want to talk more privately, can.” The team have also recently worked with The Patients Association to learn more about complaints and are working closely with the wards to encourage staff to deal with any issues on the spot. Jennie says: “We’re a friendly and approachable team and I feel we do make a difference to the patients. “We also get patients who come in and say ‘are you here so we can say thank you as well?’, and that’s really encouraging.”

Often you build good relationships with those who are in the hospital for a significant length of time, and you become their first port of call for advice, reassurance and stress release. Some just want a friendly pair of ears.u Steve Grant-Foale loves his job as a volunteer, greeting and helping patients and visitors. “Several years ago I had serious brain surgery which saved my life, so I wanted to give something back to say thank you. Many of our patients and visitors are coming into an unfamiliar environment and feel nervous about this. They may also be feeling very unwell so it’s important to me to help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. I can also share my own experience of being a patient to reassure them.”

The new season of Studio Jazz at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts opens on 10 October with the Alan Barnes and Tony Kofi Quartet - a sizzling quintet packed with star musicians. Alan Barnes and Tony Kofi have between them won countless ‘Best Saxophonist’ awards at the British and other jazz awards; bassist Arnie Somogyi sold out Studio Jazz last year with his Scenes of the City Mingus tribute and is one of the top UK bassists; John Turville is a rising piano talent leading his own acclaimed trio, whilst Rod Youngs is the drummer of choice for a range of huge stars. Accessible originals will be complemented by gems from the greatest jazz composers, while the evening is sewn together by the hilarious repartee of Alan Barnes. Matt Wates, whose sextet plays Lighthouse on 24 October, has established himself as one of the best composers, musicians and bandleaders on the British jazz scene. He’s played with a multitude of big names, but his main interest has been to create and develop a band rooted in the best traditions of the small bands of the fifties and sixties. Claire Martin, one of the finest British jazz vocalists around and winner of the British jazz Award for Best Vocalist no less than six times, visits Poole
on 7 November. Unlike anything Claire has ever done before, this chamber-jazz adventure with the Brighton-based Montpellier Cello Quartet is a magical fusion combining the Great American Songbook and popular classics with brand new arrangements. Mark Holub’s Led Bib was one of the original torchbearers for the new wave of British jazz bands. Their fourth album, ‘Sensible Shoes’, was chosen as an Album of the Year in the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize. Appealing to fans of all good music across the spectrum from Miles Davis to Captain Beefheart, Led Bib can be seen at Lighthouse on 21 November. Celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela and the joy of South African music with a special concert by the Adam Glasser Quintet and Pinise Saul’s New South African Voices on 5 December. Set one will see Glasser present burning South African instrumentals with his all-star band of top British players. Set two will see the quintet joined onstage by legendary SA vocalist Pinise Saul and her New South African Voices, whose distinctive sound blends traditional Zulu & Xhosa vocal harmony with the irresistible energy of township jazz.

Talking about Wildlife...
Batty about Bats During their existence on earth through several millennia, bats with their silent flight and mythical reputation have left few cultures indifferent. They feature in folklore across the globe, both revered and feared, but rarely understood as the remarkable mammals that they are. Bats are the only true flying mammals on the planet and locate their prey using a sophisticated system known as echolocation. They are elusive nocturnal creatures, and, despite their close proximity to human habitats, difficult to spot, partly because the sounds that they make are too high pitched for the human ear. Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind but have relatively good eyesight. There are over 1000 species of bats world wide, and 17 species of breeding bats in Britain. Of these, the pipistrelles, the brown long-eared bat and the noctule are the most common. All British bats are strict insect eaters, capable of devouring up to 3000 insects a night, from midges and moths to mosquitoes. Bats roost in various habitats, from hollow trees and caves to houses and churches. They often use different locations at different times of year, depending on their roosting needs. Bats are important to the food chain but have decreased in numbers due to loss of habitat and excessive use of insecticides, which has diminished their food sources. Bats are protected in the UK, and it is illegal to disturb or injure them or their roosting sites in any way. Bats rarely cause any damage to houses, but as winter approaches, they get ready to hibernate, and you may find a bat that has chosen
your loft for its winter retreat. If you find an injured bat or need help with bats, ring the Bat Conservation helpline on 0845 1300 228. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan was very excited about this one. She was going to take Grandma on a ‘mystery’ 70th Birthday treat. Grandma had no idea where she was going, let alone what she would be doing. Grandma and Grandad live all the way up North in Hull and often come to visit, but living so close to Bournemouth with our beautiful beaches we don’t always make the most of it. So, my sister and I did some plotting a scheming and decided a trip to the seaside would be just what Mum and Dad would love. It was kept as a very guarded secret and even Hayden, our ten year old son, would not give the game away, when asked many questions by a playful Grandma and Grandad. The day came and we set off in Nellie. Lady J, my sister’s and brother-in-law’s rather nice Jaguar followed closely behind. The weather was good, the sun was shining and Grandma and Grandad were sitting, a little perplexed, clutching a rather large suitcase which was ready for anything I think! Nellie was in her element. We drove along the sea front and arrived at our destination - The Cumberland Hotel,
Enjoying the view from the balcony
Where will Nellie be taking me? which is part of the Oceana Hotels and a grand looking building right on the cliff top in Bournemouth. Dad’s mouth was open, but for once and believe me this is rare, he was not able to speak. Mum stood in amazement. We were a little early and so were treated to a complimentary drink at the pool side while our sea view rooms were prepared. Nellie was kept on guard in the car park. The views from our rooms were spectacular. We each had a balcony and on the glorious day that it was, it was fantastic to relax and sit looking at the clear blue shimmering sea. What a wonderful place we live in! Now… having a ten year old boy doesn’t mean you can do this for long! No Mummy, action is needed. It’s time to play, get moving, no time to chill out. So, we all went back to the poolside and had a swim in the heated outdoor pool. It was really rather good. Grandma and Grandad relaxed some more, sunbathing on the loungers watching us. Dinner was booked for 8pm. The menu was excellent, the service was perfect and a great evening was had by all. A dinner well deserving of a 70th Birthday.
25 Being so near to where we live meant that Hayden could be taken to school, so the following day he went to an early breakfast which he thoroughly enjoyed and then Nellie took him off to get his education. We had booked a massage for Mum in the adjacent hotel which is part of the three Oceana Hotels on the sea front. The advantage of these hotels is that if you stay in one you can use the facilities of the other two as well. Each hotel has something different to offer. Again it was a beautiful day – not bad for the 22nd September! Dad likes his sunbathing, so again the loungers next to this pool were a welcome site as you can see here. Getting up was not so easy though! After Grandma’s very special Birthday massage we all took a walk along the sea front down to the beach. There is an impressive Tribute to Jon Egging from the Red Arrows, who tragically lost his life after a Bournemouth Airshow display. This is based on an idea by two pupils from Kinson Primary School and was designed by the artist Tim Ward. I had not seen it before. Then we followed the path to Harry Ramsden’s! What an international fame this

“Out for the count” and “Give us a hand!” has become. Mum remembered 55 years ago going into a ‘shack’ up North to get fish and chips from Harry’s place. That brought fond memories back for her. We just had to go in to taste the delights. Grandma loved the setting and she very nearly ran off with one of their plates! The waiter didn’t quite have to do a rugby tackle at the door, but it was a close shave…. Apparently they get asked often if the plates can be taken or purchased. A very clever idea! It all adds to the authenticity of the surroundings. The meal was delicious and ended a really happy 24 hours ‘away’. We are so very lucky to live in such a glorious location. Mum’s Birthday was a resounding success. Dad sent us a thank you card on their return to Yorkshire which said, “We were completely taken aback. Mum was overwhelmed by it and will remember her 70th for quite some time!” We didn’t quite manage to get her on the new zip wire…maybe we will save that for next time? Where will Nellie go next…? Hospice Charity boutique celebrates second birthday After opening its doors in October 2012, The Secret Wardrobe has raised in excess of £118,300 for Forest Holme Hospice, which provides specialist care for patients with advanced cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and The Purbecks. The Secret Wardrobe is a vintage inspired boutique located on the first floor of the Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole and is managed by Natalie Miller and her team of dedicated volunteers. This October marks the second birthday of the shop and as part of the birthday celebrations, Forest Holme Hospice Charity is asking supporters to donate two beautiful items to The Secret Wardrobe. Perhaps you have a dress hidden in your wardrobe that you no longer wear? Or an item with tags that you never got round to returning? Donations can be hand delivered directly to The Secret Wardrobe. Alternatively, please visit the donation point at Big Yellow Self Storage on Nuffield Road, Poole. We spoke to the tireless volunteers who have given their time to help make The Secret Wardrobe such a success. Twenty year-old Rebekah Feltham-Brown has been volunteering for The Secret Wardrobe for two years. Rebekah said; “I started to volunteer at The Secret Wardrobe to thank the charity for all the care they have given my friend who was in Forest Holme. I enjoy everything about the shop! Forest Holme is an amazing charity to volunteer for.” Beryl McCarthy added; “My husband passed away at Forest Holme so I started volunteering to support the charity and felt that it would be a worthwhile venture. I love it!”
Marilyn Goodhead has been volunteering for The Secret Wardrobe for one year and said; “I can’t tell you how much working in the shop has helped me. It gets me out of the house, lots of friendships have been made and I now have a busy diary. The ladies I work with are lovely; they are all friendly and supportive. World Class Dinner Jazz in aid of Charity at The Italian Villa, Compton Acres Over £500 was raised for the Poole Hospital Africa Link Charity at a Dinner Jazz Evening in the Italian Villa at Compton Acres recently. The Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Chris Mayne attended the dinner event which was supported by a number of local businesses. Dame Yvonne Moores, patron and founder member of the Hospital Charity said the money was very welcome and would be used to purchase vital equipment for the Wau hospital in Southern Sudan, which is one of the poorest and least well known parts of Africa. Poole Hospital has been providing education and training for doctors, nurses and clinical staff, helping them to develop health services in a country where child and maternal death rates are some of the highest in the world. During the evening, Gerry Clarke, Compton Acres Arts & Music Festival Director, announced plans to establish a series of dinner jazz evenings over the coming months. He said: “Following the
success of our recent Festival in the gardens at Compton Acres which showcased local creative talent, we have decided to go ahead with a series of events to introduce talented musicians and other live entertainers.” Performing live at the inaugural event, Poole musicians Zoe Schwarz and Rob Koral with their accomplished Jazz Quintet played a number of well known jazz standards from the likes of Nora Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday. Whilst enjoying the music, dinner guests were treated to a fine gourmet meal prepared by Tony Beale’s team of masterchefs at the Italian Villa. For everyone, it was an opportunity to enjoy good food and listen to some world class jazz music and at the same time raise money or a good cause. More entertainment events are planned for the coming months.
