AISH to welcome Bloodhound Land Speed Record Car AISH Technologies, a systems design and manufacturing company based in Poole, Dorset, is all set to welcome a life-size replica of the Bloodhound land speed record car to its offices. The company is hosting an Open Day on 11th June and will invite local schools, business leaders and MP’s in Dorset, clients, suppliers and employees families to see the car and find out more from the project team. AISH is a key sponsor to the Bloodhound project. It has supplied the three multi-function consoles that will be installed in the support trailer during the record attempt and used to track vital parameters such as engine telemetry, meteorology and driver’s physiology. The consoles closely match the ergonomics, environmental performance and build quality of the multifunction consoles supplied by AISH to the Royal Navy’s latest Daring Class Air Warfare Destroyers. The Bloodhound project reaches its climax with two world land speed record attempts, one later this year (with a target of 800mph) and a final attempt in 2016 with a target of 1,000mph. The Bloodhound SSC is a jet and rocket powered car, mixing car and aircraft technology. The front half is a carbon fibre monocoque like a racing car and the back half is a metallic framework and panels like an aircraft. It is over 13 metres in length, weighs 7 tonnes and will accelerate to 1000mph in 55 seconds, fast enough to cover four and a half football pitches in one second. AISH was chosen to supply the consoles as a result of its work with the Royal Navy. The rigours of high structural integrity, good heat dissipation and ingress (dust and moisture) protection that are so important in the marine environment are equally necessary for the Bloodhound support equipment, which will be transported and used
in one of the most difficult areas on land – the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa. This is an extreme desert environment, where temperatures range between -6°C and +45°C and severe dust storms are common. The Bloodhound SSC team will be relying on the monitoring systems to keep car and driver safe during the many runs needed to build vehicle speed, and of course during the final record attempt. As a further commitment to the project, 3 AISH employees have undergone the Bloodhound Ambassador training course, whereby they act as representatives of Bloodhound SSC at visits to schools, with the task of inspiring youngsters to think of engineering as a career choice. Lloyd Bates, Managing Director of AISH Technologies, is delighted the company is so closely involved with the world record attempt: “We have been in discussion with Richard Noble, Project Leader, since 2010, and we have seen the tremendous determination shown by his team and the hugely complex nature of the project. Julia’s House launches Retail Academy Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospices, has launched a Retail Academy, a groundbreaking new training initiative for volunteers who work in its charity shops. The comprehensive 16-week long programme – believed to be the first of its kind among UK charities - is aimed at building the confidence and skills of those who currently volunteering, but who might be looking to develop a career in retailing. The Academy course includes all aspects of shop management – pricing, cash handling, merchandising and customer service – with additional ‘bolt on’ modules to further develop leadership, time management and visual merchandising skills. There is even the option to study for NVQs in maths and English. “It’s about learning and developing core retail skills – but it’s also about building confidence and self-esteem,” said Julia’s House Area Retail Manager Brie Logan, who came up with the idea. Not every volunteer will be put on the programme – just 20 in the first year. “We have more than 300 retail volunteers at Julia’s House, but they all have different motivations for supporting us,” explained Brie. “ We are looking for the people with a real passion for retail and for job seekers who are ultimately looking for paid employment. “The programme will give these volunteers all the technical aspects of retail experience, but within a supportive environment. We will harness all their enthusiasm and translate it into practical skills. “Even when volunteers have the experience of working in a Julia’s House shop, moving across into a paid job can be too big a leap for them. “Our training will smooth the way – we can even help with CVs and interview techniques. The Retail Academy is all about the three ‘Es’ – enterprise, employability and education,” said Brie. Training will largely take place in Julia’s House shops under the mentorship of Brie and shop managers. The course will end with a ceremony attended by Julia’s House CEO Martin Edwards where graduates will be presented with special badges, marking them out as key volunteers. But doesn’t Brie worry about volunteers leaving as soon as they graduate?
“It’s a two-way benefit. Not everyone on the course will leave. We expect around half will want to stay on, becoming valuable support for our shops. And for those who do leave and get jobs, we will feel proud to have given them the boost they needed.” To find out more about the programme please call Brie on 01202 644220. Case study: Jenny Pricter, 37, is currently unemployed and volunteers at the Julia’s House shop in Weymouth. She was one of the first to join the Retail Academy programme and is due to graduate in June. Said Jenny:” When my dad suffered a stroke and then my mum became ill, I ended up becoming their carer for five years and was unable to work. It was a very isolating experience and I ended up suffering from depression. “The thought of getting back out into the world, let along looking for a job, was a frightening prospect. I decided to volunteer to ease my way back into working. “The confidence I have gained on the volunteer programme is beyond measure. I was a shy person who avoided interacting with customers when I first started but now I love that part of the job! The Julia’s House shop staff have made me so welcome – I feel like a really useful part of the team and have found the whole experience challenging and exciting. “It is wonderful to have new skills, qualifications and extra responsibilities. I am hoping to get employment in retail, but I want to keep volunteering for Julia’s House. I am so grateful for charity’s support and want to keep supporting them as my way of giving something back.”

Talking about Wildlife...
What can nature do for you? Spring has sprung in Dorset. Daffodils and primroses are adding colour to our landscape, butterflies are flitting around, and blossom is starting to bud on trees – a most welcome sight after a long winter. But what does being outside this time of year mean to you, and how does it make you feel? That’s a question we’re asking as part of the new Dorset Wildlife Trust campaign, ‘My Wild Life’, which asks: what’s your wild life? You may think you don’t live a wild life, but every time you step out of your front door, particularly this time of year, wildlife and outside space can shape your day ahead and change your mood, for the better. ‘Ecotherapy’ (being active outdoors) has been proven to improve health and wellbeing, and is a recognised method for helping those with mental and physical health issues. Flora, from Bridport in Dorset is a wild swimmer and loves spending time outside with her children. She also uses nature to help with projects for her stained glass art business. Flora said, “I get a lot of inspiration from being outdoors. As well as contemporary work, I do a lot of traditional work where stained glass panels often feature birds and foliage. Whilst I’m out with my family in Dorset, there’s plenty to photograph to help me with my work.” Beth, from West Bay said, “I absolutely love our coastline and we enjoy going out with the children. We build dens, we play in the sand and fly kites. It’s important to us to spend time outside with them, getting fresh air and exploring local places. Spending time outside makes me feel inspired, relaxed and invigorated.”

It looks like a bloated beast and occasionally it handles like one.
car is available with rear-wheel drive and uses a highly efficient eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
The Porsche Panamera’s swollen exterior is more obvious at the back of the car; it’s too bulbous to look athletic. But there is no disguising the ability of the vehicle. Two enormous tail pipes jut from the car’s stern like horizontal steel chimneys; these more than hint at the clout that the corpulent car is capable of serving up.
For the majority of time spent behind the portly Porsche’s wheel, it pleases when its hefty haunches launch the car forward with as much effort as it takes to throw a dart. The formidable engine chucks the monster from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds, and carries it to a top speed of 161 mph. The 3.0 litre six cylinder turbo diesel car is made for touring that much is obvious. The 100 litre fuel tank and claimed 44.1 mpg will take you across a generous slice of the European continent without the need to stop for fuel. To give you an idea of its range in the UK, the German goliath is capable of taking four passengers from Lands End to Loch Ness without refuelling.
The front of the Panamera is far more Porsche-like, with its sweeping curved bonnet and ever-so-slightly ‘hang-dogeyed’ headlights. Approaching it from the front, or when peering down its long, wide, snout, its form starts to draw you in. Through its proportions alone, the Porsche Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment. It measures 1931mm (76.0in) in width and 1418mm (55.8in) in height, while its overall length is 4970mm (195.7in). And this particular oilburner model can be recognised by the lettering ‘diesel’ on the front doors. Step inside, and the plush cabin reeks of cowhide. The sumptuous seating-for-four and lengthy legroom, both front and rear, provide the comfort you would expect from a car costing over £60,000. Indeed, every Panamera, has a high level of standard specification. This includes Porsche Active Suspension Management, which adapts handling to suit your preferred driving style. In ‘Normal’ mode the car delivers a blend of performance and comfort, and then there’s a ‘Sport’ setting where the setup is much firmer. The Porsche also comes with vivid Bi-Xenon headlights; parking sensors; tyre pressure monitoring; automatic dimming rear view mirrors; touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, as well as cruise control. In addition, the
Performance and low consumption are accompanied by smooth running and low emissions. An additional contributing factor is the auto start/stop function, which is de rigueur. Porsche has never suffered from a poor image. Sure, like most automakers, there have been tiny blips in its history, but nothing detrimental. The arrival of the Panamera Diesel has definitely polarised the opinion of the petrol-headed purists though. Many don’t see it as a 'proper' Porsche, and its styling certainly doesn’t achieve universal acclaim. Poole Refuge Playground Update In January the Gannett Foundation (Daily Echo) awarded a grant to BCHA of £9,000 and the FJB Group and Cash For Kids awarded us £5,000, to build a playground at Poole Refuge. We are delighted to announce that the playground has now been completed and will be officially opened at the end of April. One resident said, “Having been in an abusive relationship it is very easy to lock yourself and your children away from the world and other people in order to stay safe. At home we had play equipment in the garden so the children miss having this and being able to use up energy. The playground will provide a safe place for them to play with other children in the refuge and give them back a bit of normality.”
Lorna Trent, Fundraising Manager at BCHA said, “We know from experience what a difference this playground will make to the children at the refuge and we cannot thank the Gannet Foundation, FJB Group and Cash for Kids enough. Without their generosity we couldn’t have built the playground.”

Why would I want to play bowls? It’s just for old people, isn’t it? Well yes, most players are older, but we also have a special junior section and adult members from 20 to 80. Bowls is a very simple game to learn, but one that will keep challenging you from start to finish and whatever ability you attain you are certain to get a game in one of our teams. We play daytime, evening and weekends. It is a team game where everyone helps one another and there is a strong but friendly competitive spirit. Poole Park Bowls Club, situated in the middle of Poole Park, is a friendly club that always welcomes newcomers and has a strong social side. We are starting a junior section this season meeting Friday
evenings, which Penny Cresswell our very experienced junior coach is organising. We have members who have been playing this game for some 40 years who are more than happy to help new members when they come along. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie loves Poole! We have so much to do on our doorstep here in Dorset. No matter where we live, there is plenty of exciting activities for all ages, as well as miles of glorious beaches, just around the corner, in our beautiful town of Bournemouth. Poole Quay is a vibrant place. There is much history, fantastic old buildings and many good restaurants and cafes for a coffee break, or even a full seafood meal. So yes, Nellie loves to travel to Poole. She knows that many of you will be very familiar with the sights and sounds of our wonderful seaside location but she wanted to tell you of her recent exciting trip out and all that she saw. The Sunseeker boats! Oh boy do they look magnificent. We are lucky enough to have Sunseeker based right here in Poole. It is in fact the flagship dealership for new and pre-owned Sunseeker boats and luxury motor yachts. These yachts make Nellie’s mouth water. They give the whole place a sense of wealth, extravagance… and how the other half live! Oh well, maybe not this lifetime but they are great to see anyway.

Nellie loves Sunseekers! The Pleasure boats! Now these are more like it. Nellie can afford this. Though she is rather too large to actually step on board. (She really does need to go on a diet… again!). Brownsea Island is where these boats take you, as well as some trips to Wareham, Swanage and Old Harry Rocks, so for anyone wanting to have a pleasurable trip around the harbour, take in our glorious scenery, have a coffee on board and generally ‘while away the day’, this is for you! It is also for children as they usually love the sea and it is pretty exciting to watch the land move further and further away. Brownsea Island, which is magnificently set in Poole Harbour with spectacular views over the Purbecks is owned by the National Trust. Lord Baden Powell’s statue salutes you as you set off for ‘his scout’s island’. Our famous, rare, red squirrels can be spotted here so those with a good camera could get some amazing photos. There is also a café as well as a hotel, but only those lucky enough to work for the John Lewis Partnership can stay here, as it is owned by them. The data I have is that there is a long waiting list!
29 Back on the Quay, there are haunted pubs! The King Charles Pub dates all the way back to the 1300s when it was a wool house! Incredible. The Custom House, now a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee or meal, is famous for the smuggling episode some 250 years ago when 30 ‘savage’ smugglers forced there way in and stole 2 ton of tea. Those were the days… There is even an old prison, called Fish Street Gaol. Can you find it? Continuing past the Georgian House, Hotel du Vin, there are some very old Almshouses (a house founded by charity, offering accommodation for poor people) dating back to Henry V. In fact, if local history is your interest then the Poole Museum also houses the Local History Centre. It is based in the historic Town Cellars, where you can learn more about the history of Poole and it’s people. It is a fascinating place to visit, all free of charge and Nellie highly recommends it. For children on the quay there are amusement arcades, an illuminated pirate, crazy golf course which is indoors, above the amusement arcade, so ideal if the weather is not so good… and plenty of ice cream sellers!

One of Poole’s haunted pubs! We love Banana Wharf for lunch. The views are perfect, whether the weather is good or bad, so do mention The Hamworthy Directory to the manager there and give him a big “Hello” from Nellie! One last thing, the shops. Nellie loves “Pavers”, the shoe shop, and has more shoes than she needs, or even her cupboards can store, but hey that’s girls for you. We are well known for it! There is also our nationally and even internationally famous Poole Pottery. The large, open plan shop is great to look around, buy Birthday presents, gifts with “Poole” on them for those out of town, or just a special something for yourself. There is also a place for children to paint a pot themselves. Ideal for Grandma or Grandad. So, do take a day out to our wonderful town of Poole. It has a lot to offer for all ‘shapes and sizes’, all weathers and any time of the year. Nellie hopes you find something new and exciting. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Air Cadet Junior Leaders Course XVI Raises an Incredible £24,500! The Air Cadet Junior Leaders on this year’s course XVI have raised an incredible £24,500 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. A huge amount which will make a massive difference to the opportunities that the charity can provide for young people in the coming year. The Air Cadets Junior Leaders Course is physically and mentally demanding and requires real commitment and determination. Almost 180 Air Cadets applied for Course XVI and with 59 students recently completing the nine month course, it gives an indication of the high standard that must be achieved. A big step up from the other Cadet Leadership Courses, the Junior Leaders Course is aimed at cadets 17 years or older in the year they begin the course. It’s also open to Sea Cadets and Army Cadets and culminates in the award of a Level Two Certificate in Team Leadership from the Institute of Leadership and Management. This is the toughest but most rewarding of the Air Cadets leadership courses – any Cadet that makes it through has the makings of a very successful leader. As part of the assessment the Junior Leaders are tasked with planning, organising and implementing a fundraising activity or event and the JTYAF is privileged to be the recipient charity for these activities. The Junior Leaders on Course XVI
organised a whole range of fundraising events and challenges. From Skydives to Drumathons, Coast to Coast Cycles, Half Marathons and even a Unicycle over Forth Bridge the Junior Leaders inspired their friends and family to support them in their innovative fundraising challenges. Many JL’s took on extremely tough physical challenges, with hundreds of miles cycled, the Welsh 3000’s summitted, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and the Dorset Coast Path completed to name but a few. The JTYAF is totally overwhelmed by the support of these remarkable young people. Their commitment to John’s Foundation and the support and encouragement that they provide is nothing short of inspiring. We are also extremely grateful to the Junior Leader’s friends and families for their kindness and generosity. £24,500 is an incredible achievement and will make a massive difference to the opportunities that the JTYAF is able to provide for young people. It will not only fund the Junior Leaders volunteering expedition to Ghana later this year but will also finance all the JTYAF awards to young people from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Cadets, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Prince’s Trust Scheme and the Guides.

There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with! If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer.
The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

LEWIS Car Insurance Car insurance prices have fallen 40% over the past two years, according to the AA. But with a rise in fraudulent claims, its latest index predicts an increase of up to 8% in 2015; others think 10% is possible. So to help you drive down costs, let me answer your most common questions… Q. Is this only something you can do if you’re at renewal? A. No, everyone should be checking their price right now, even if you only signed up to a new deal a few months ago. Unless you’ve claimed, you can usually cancel a policy for a fee of around £50 and get a refund for the rest of the year (though you won’t earn no claims for that year). It’s worth checking if it’s worth it. Q. My renewal’s only six weeks away, should I just wait? A. It’s likely if you did try and cancel and get a new policy now, the cancellation fee will diminish any savings – so that’s a bit futile. Yet there is another trick – www.aviva.co.uk, www.postoffice.co.uk and www.lv.com quotes last 60 days, so why not grab them now and you’re effectively locking in those prices in case they rise in the meantime. Q. Are the savings that great? Can’t you just auto-renew? A. Never just auto-renew without checking elsewhere, often it just lets insurers smack a price rise on you, as it knows apathy means many will keep paying more and more. I’m not saying auto-renewing will never be your cheapest option, just that it should never be done without checking and comparing elsewhere first. Q. So it’s just a question of getting on a comparison site? A. That’s the route many use, but there are steps to really kick it up. It’s important to understand that there’s no one cheapest provider, so it’s a case of following a system. Never just do one comparison, you need a benchmark of a few comparisons to find out where’s cheapest. There’s a system to follow fully explained at www.mse.me/ carinsurance. In a nutshell… Combine comparison sites. They don’t all cover the same insurers, so combining a number of sites is the best way to really make a meaningful saving. My current top picks for a typical driver are www.moneysupermarket.com, www.confused.com, and www.comparethemarket.com Check insurers that comparisons miss. Comparison sites let you compare 100s of insurers quickly but they don’t capture the entire market. The biggies, including Aviva, www.directline.com and www.zurich.co.uk only offer their products directly. More than one car at home? Comparison sites can only cope
with one car at once so don’t include multi-car discounts. Therefore you should always manually check those that offer it. The big one is www.admiral.com multi-car, but www.churchill.com, www.directline.com and www.privilege.com also offer it. I’m not saying they’ll win, but that you should check. Difficult to insure? Use a broker. If you’ve difficult circumstances (eg, past bans or big accidents) that make getting insurance difficult, a comparison site is less likely to help as these are mainly focused on ‘normal’ policies. You may be better off finding a local broker - see the British Insurance Brokers’ Association website (www.biba.org.uk), as these can sometimes find a cheaper deal for you. Q. So it’s all pretty straightforward? A. Ah if only. Common-sense doesn't always do the job… - Third party's not always cheapest. Merely selecting comprehensive makes some insurers see you as a lower risk. So always check both. - Adding a responsible second driver can cut your costs. This can bring down your risk average and price ― of course, it must be someone who may drive your car. As Mazzyb5 tweeted: "Took your advice and added mum ― saved £500." - Tweaking your job description can cut costs. I'm not saying lap dancers should call themselves cabinet ministers (or vice versa, heaven forbid). But these days many people have such specific job descriptions car insurers don't list them, as Fabsternation tweeted: "Thanks. Changing from creative director to marketing manager saved £300." See my fun car insurance job picker tool www.mse.me/jobpicker. - Beware paying monthly. A monthly payment plan for your insurance is essentially a high-interest loan. For example, if your premium is £1,000 but you’re paying an APR of 25%, your insurance will actually cost £1,140 once you factor in the interest. So either pay in full, or if you can't afford it, use a credit card with a lower APR or better still, a 0% credit card for spending, ensuring your repayments are big enough to clear it within a year. Q. And any special tips for young drivers? A. With the average premium for a 17-22-year-old at an eyewatering £1,194 per year, young car drivers can be priced out ― all the techniques above will help, but if you’re not getting there, check ‘pay how you drive’ (telematics) this involves a device being fitted inside your car that monitors your actions behind the wheel.
