Dream Doors (Poole & Christchurch) Win Checkatrade Award for 2013! 2013 was a fantastic year for us. At our annual conference we were awarded the top award for year on year growth, runner up for overall sales for 2013 but most importantly Checkatrade gave us their award for Dream Doors Franchisee of the year! This prestigious award is reflective of what many of our customers have independently said and scored us on the Checkatrade feedback forms.

Celebrating the opening of the Christchurch showroom

This was a huge achievement for us, and one that we didn’t expect, particularly since we have only just completed our 3rd year of trading. We commenced trading as Dream Doors Poole in January 2011, opening our first showroom in Broadstone in March. Despite this been at the height of the recession, we built on quality products and services, to offer customers a real alternative to the normal kitchen replacement. As a Franchise business we cover the whole of the BH postcode district and soon realised that in order to fully support our customer base we needed to expand. After careful consideration we decided Christchurch would be an ideal location for us, so in October 2013 we became the first Dream Doors Franchise to

open a second showroom. We have carefully designed our showroom to optimise the space and incorporate a wide selection of our products to show our customers how we can transform their kitchen. Since opening the new Christchurch showroom we have continued to go from strength to strength. Already we are building a strong customer base which is reflective in our rapidly expanding Checkatrade results. Looking forward, we are excited at the prospects of making the Christchurch branch as successful as the Broadstone branch, and providing our new customer base a real alternative.

Continuing to build on improvements At the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals we have some outstanding services that have been recognised for their excellent clinical outcomes, innovation and patient care. For example did you know that: • Toshiba has chosen the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) as the first site for installation of its latest CT scanner – the first of its type in the world • we have among the lowest mortality rates for major colorectal surgery (statistically within the top 2% of trusts nationwide) • our Bournemouth Transplant Unit is JACIE accredited which means we are compliant with several hundred quality standards, all of which strive to ensure that a patient having a stem cell transplant has a safe procedure • in orthopaedics we are the third largest joint centre in the UK with some of the shortest lengths of stay, lowest rates of infection and highest levels of patient satisfaction • our cardiologists have the lowest levels of major adverse cardiac events in the country Many of you have also told us about your experiences and the great care you have received which is very reassuring for all of our staff. Assessing patients’ needs All patients on our wards now have their condition monitored via an electronic system, known as VitalPAC nurse. Using a handheld device, similar to an iPhone, nurses record and monitor a patient’s

Patricia Ellis and her mum Virginia stopped by the Carers’ Café recently observations, for example blood pressure and heart rate. If a patient’s condition deteriorates the system automatically triggers a response from an appropriately skilled clinician, enabling a quicker clinical response, improving safety and enhancing patient care. It enables staff to prioritise treatment for the sickest patients. Listening and learning Listening to you and learning from your experiences is really important. This includes hearing from those who may find it difficult to have a voice. Every week we hold a Carers’ Café where carers and relatives can share their experiences with a qualified nurse over a coffee. We also have a range of support information and resources available for you. We are in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital from 1.30-2.30pm and look forward to seeing you. We have also invited local independent consumer watchdog Healthwatch Dorset to collect people’s views on our hospital and its services. Healthwatch will be at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital a couple of days a month for the next six months. The first two dates are Wednesday 5 March from 9am to 1pm and Friday 14 March from 12pm to 4pm when they’ll be talking to people in the main entrance area and main outpatients department. Mercury Clean did a great job in cleaning our oven last month. Jamie arrived promptly, on time and immediately set to work. He was very thorough and completely professional. I was told by Martin the owner, that they would get the cooker looking like new again, and he was right! After all the festivities over Christmas and New Year (boy doesn’t that seem a long way away now!), the oven was a mess. You can see the difference after Jamie’s work in the photos here. Also, true to word, Jamie replaced the broken bulb and installed a new cover, all included in the cost. The Poole Logboat One of the star objects in Poole Museum’s collection is the Poole Logboat, an amazing survival dating right back to the Iron Age, more than 2000 years ago. Some Frequently Asked Questions about this incredible vessel are given below. When was the Logboat found? The Logboat was discovered in 1964, 50 years ago this year.

The first half of the Logboat just after it was raised, 1964 Who discovered the Logboat? It was discovered off Brownsea Island. Dredgers discovered one half of the Logboat and then a month later divers came back and recovered the other half of the boat. There was a great deal of public interest in the Logboat from the beginning. In 1965, a year after the Logboat was found, the Poole and Dorset Herald described the Logboat as Poole Museum’s “star item”. What clues were found with the Logboat? There was no cargo found, but there were traces of animal hide and moss which had been used to seal the boat

more than 2000 years before. This was sent off for radiocarbon dating, which gave archaeologists date somewhere between 397 and 176 BC, dating the boat to the Iron Age. How was it made? The Logboat was made from a single piece of wood – a very large oak tree trunk. Felling and transporting this tree trunk would have required a strong team of people. Even in the Iron Age, trees as large as this one were quite rare, which may suggest that this was seen as rather a special boat even at the time. It would have been hollowed out and shaped using a combination of cutting and burning. One of the most unusual things about the Poole Logboat is its size. At 10 metres log, it is one of the largest logboats ever found in the UK. What was the Logboat used for? There were no objects found alongside the Logboat, so there are many unanswered questions about what the Logboat was used for. It could have been used in a variety of ways – perhaps as a cargo boat or for ferrying people arounfd the Harbour. It could have carried up to 18 people. The Logboat would have had fairly shallow sides. It was not suited to voyages beyond the calm waters of the Harbour. In the Iron Age the sea level was two to three metres lower than today, meaning that the Harbour was made up of little channels surrounded by reeds. Imagine manoeuvring a boat as large as the Logboat around these little channels.

17 What was Iron Age Poole like? Iron Age Poole was a surprisingly sophisticated centre of industry and cross channel trade. One example of this evidence is the so-called Green Island Causeway, not actually a Causeway at all but two jetties stretching out from Green Island and Cleavel Point, made from stone and timber. These are the earliest man-made jetties ever found in Europe. The southern mole or jetty is 8 metres wide, with a flat upper surface 160m long. Poole Harbour was also full of thriving industry, just as it is today - shale working, pottery production and iron smelting all took place around the Harbour at this time. Was the Logboat really preserved in sugar? Yes, really! The Logboat has only survived for so long because it was preserved underwater. Once waterlogged wood reaches the surface, the wood dries out and the structure collapses. Sugar helps support the structure as the water evaporates. A vast quantity of diluted sugar syrup was poured into a tank, into which the two Logboat halves were placed. When the

sugar had soaked right into the wood the Logboat was placed in a specially built sealed chamber to dry out very slowly and carefully. Once dried, huge sugar crystals were removed by hand by archaeologists, conservators and some very generous volunteers. Where can I find out more? Why not visit Poole Museum? The Logboat sits in pride of place close to the Museum entrance. There is nothing like seeing this extraordinary survival up close, and marvelling at the fact that it is over 2000 years old. You can also find out more about Poole’s past from prehistory to today in the Poole History Centre, a 600 year-old woolhouse located next to Poole Museum. Nearly New Sales raise funds for SPRING My mum and I have been running these sales for nearly ten years now, firstly in Upton, then in Hamworthy for the last three years. We hold four sales a year - two at the beginning of the year and two towards the end. We run these in conjunction with identical sales in Broadstone (run by a friend of ours). It all started when we went to an NCT nearly new sale in Parkstone. There was so much red-tape involved and so many restrictions on the sellers that I felt that there should be an easier, more relaxed way of doing things. At the time, I was helping to run a baby & toddler group in Upton (and still do even though my babies are all at school now!) and we thought that a sale would be a great way to generate some much needed funds for the group. We all agreed that we should split the profits 50/50 with a local charity and after a little discussion

with the other mums in the group, SPRING was chosen. SPRING stands for Support for Parents and Relatives In Neo-natal Grief - i.e. supporting families through losing a baby either during pregnancy, at or just after childbirth. They provide support and professional counselling for families and there is a special suite at St Mary’s Maternity Unit where families can go when experiencing difficulties during pregnancy. It has proved an invaluable resource for so many people - so much so that an additional suite is being built in the new maternity unit extension complete with its own entrance separate to the main maternity ward. SPRING is a relatively small charity and the money we raise at the Hamworthy and Broadstone sales is highly appreciated. Last year, we donated approximately £1500 to SPRING.

Photographer of the Month! Our Photographer of the Month for February is Julie Purkiss. Julie is a keen photographer who came to live in the area 17 years ago and has lived in both Bournemouth and Poole. Although Julie has been interested in photography for some years, this interest really blossomed when she moved to this area. Julie said, “When I moved here I was delighted by the many photo opportunities in such a relatively small area of Dorset - from the Isle of Purbeck all the way across to Christchurch Harbour the scenery is outstanding. This particular photo was an unexpected success, I decided to pop down to Evening Hill in Poole but on arrival it was quite misty, not a good day for photography at all, then as I was about to leave I saw the boats

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow, what a mixture of weather we have had these last few months! Nellie took us all the way to Hull to see my family and we had 7 hours of solid rain getting there. Poor Nellie, she looked pretty drowned by the time we arrived. In fact a few days before we left, a shop owner pointed out that Nellie was “illegal!” Astonished, I asked “Why?”… He was right, Nellie was so dirty with all the spray, mud and debris off the roads, that you couldn’t see her number plate. Well I am pleased to say that she has had a wash and there should be NO policeman knocking on our door! Anyway, the journey back from Hull was far more pleasant and I just had to show you our panorama view of Nellie under the magnificent Humber Bridge. Back to ‘sunny’ Dorset and last weekend we went on a Geo Cache. If you have never done a Geo Cache before and like walking, exploring sights you may not have seen previously,

I highly recommend it. It is free! All you need to do is go online to www. geocaching.com. It is a “real world treasure hunt” and there are literally hundreds of walks with a purpose…to find the hidden “treasure”. The hidden treasure is actually a box of odds and ends that walkers have added, which you can take and replace with some thing else. There is often a list of all the ‘geo cachers’ who have done the same hunt which you can add your details to. The way you find the hidden treasure is by use of a GPS device which you can buy, or indeed find an app on your phone. Once you have printed out the Geo Cache that you want to do, there are lots of clues which you use to discover the coordinates and thus find the trail to the treasure. It is ideal for youngsters who would otherwise complain about a ‘boring old walk’ and basically make your life a misery whilst you try and enjoy the fresh country or

29 said it was the middle of February and I hadn’t thought of that. Following the coordinates from the clues given, the Geo Cache took us over the fields with three wonderful Shire horses (not to be messed with, I could see…) and great views across the River Stour and the Priory at Christchurch. We would never have taken this route, or discovered it at all without having looked on line for a Geo Cache. A couple of the clues were a little tricky but we found the treasure! The tree was lying in a pool of water and Hayden and Stephen had fun doing ‘a tight rope walk’ to get to the buried treasure box. Victory! The first clue... seaside air and the views. Everyone wins! It is exciting, it can be competitive, and it gets you outside. Saturday was a beautiful day and Nellie chose to take us to Hengistbury Head. The Geo Cache took us along the river behind the golf course. Protected here from the wind, it really was very warm. Hayden, knowing we were near the sea and being a keen swimmer himself, announced disappointedly, “Oh Mum, you didn’t bring the swimmers!” I laughed and

Finder’s reward We followed the trail back past the golf course, had a much appreciated and rather large ice cream reward, a cup of coffee in Nellie and a final brisk walk along the wonderful coastline. Once we were back on the cliff top with a very cold sea breeze, though a gorgeously bright day, I think Hayden forgot about the “swimmers”! Vdub At The Pub Festival 2014

Friday 16th May – Sunday 18th May 2014 – Wimborne, Dorset 2014’s Vdub At The Pub Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with a great new line-up of live music, acoustic artists and live DJ’s. We will of course be bringing back our ever popular Show & Shine competition, with this year’s classes including: Best Beatle, Best Type 2 Bay, Best Split, Best Type 25 Air & Water, Best Type 4 Van, Best Newie, Best Golf/Polo, Best Other, Best Paint, Best Rat and Best Overall, for our Volkswagen lovers to show off their wheels. Our line-up of music this year will see the return of Vdub veteran Si Genaro, (recently becoming a national personality after his quirky performance on BBC’s The VoiceUK) Saturday Sun, (in January being listed as one of The Guardian’s new band of the day) and The Crematics, (having previously supported the likes of Bastille and The Rizzle Kicks) just to name a few. As well as live music all weekend, we are kicking off the show this year with Friday night’s DJ night, where 2014 Vdub festivals goers can start their weekend by dancing the night away. The first Vdub at the Pub took place back in 2008 at Drusilla’s Inn in Dorset and was the first time the festivals creator John had combined engines, beer and live music. Dubbers came from far and wide to Drusilla’s Inn for 2 years before the numbers grew so high that it was time to find a larger show ground. In 2010 Vdub moved to the grounds of Wimborne Town Football Club, where it still runs today. Last year’s festival was a 3 day event, catering for everybody’s needs, with live music all weekend, DJ’s playing into the night and local Brewery Dorset Piddle Beer holding a mini beer Festival in the live music tent. We also had the Dorset Stormtroopers in attendance all weekend entertaining the crowds. We sold out our camping spaces a week before the festival and with the help of local land owners we managed to increase our camping facilities and open and second camping field for the second year running! The 2014 show will be our best yet. We hope to see you there!

Barn Owls

Barns owls are amongst the most beautiful birds in Britain. Although some barn owls are brown in colour, the majority have golden and silver-grey feathers and white under-parts. They also have bright-white, heart-shaped faces, which resemble masks. Contrary to popular belief, these mystical birds do not hoot; instead, they hiss and emit long, unsettling shrieks. Barn owls consume small mammals (mice, voles and shrews), which they hunt from the air above. These striking birds are formidable hunters, but unfortunately the recent bad weather may have a negative impact on their ability to hunt: their wings are not waterproof, but designed with tiny serrations on their flight feathers so they are able to sweep through the air soundlessly. This unnerving ability has earned them the title ‘Ghost Owl.’ In addition, their sensitive hearing enables them to pinpoint the smallest sound whilst they are in flight. Ordinarily, barn owls hunt at dusk or dawn, although they will occasionally hunt during the day and at night (they do not require sight to hunt). Barn owls favour the open country. They will venture into the woodland if necessary, but prefer to hunt along the edges of woods. Barn owls breed when food is abundant. Ordinarily, they lay 4 to 7 eggs, 2-3 days apart.

Each egg will hatch after 31-32 days incubation. Females will sit on their young for an additional 3 weeks after they have hatched. During this time, their mate will bring food to the nest. Barn owls were once Britain’s most common owl species; however, the numbers have declined by up to 70% in recent years. This is due to the growing use of rodenticides, which are highly toxic. There are an estimated 4,000 pairs in the UK today, but there is concern that numbers are ever decreasing, and in recent years, the wet summers and cold winters have made conditions difficult for them. Dorset Wildlife Trust hosts a barn owl nest webcam, so you can see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Dorset Cancer Centre set to benefit once again from Poole’s premier running event Entries now open for the Poole Festival of Running 2014 Entries are now open for Poole’s 2014 Festival of Running, with proceeds earmarked for the Dorset Cancer Centre, at Poole Hospital, for the second year running. The 2014 series of races will take place on Sunday, 1 June, at Poole Park. Now in its 33rd year, the event comprises seven races catering for all age groups, including the chip-timed 10k race suitable for all levels of ability, the 5k ‘Run for Cancer’ Sponsored by the Daily Echo and under 15’s minithon races supported by the Borough of Poole. Last year raised an amazing £12,000, which is already benefiting cancer patients in a variety of ways including music equipment for all the treatment and planning areas, TV’s for the waiting areas to aid patient relaxation, breast gowns for patients, camping mats to cover treatment couches for extra comfort and dignity during treatment, neck support vacuum bags for extra comfort and immobilisation for head and neck patients. Everyone who takes part in a race will be encouraged to raise sponsorship with the money raised supporting the Dorset Cancer Centre. Sponsorship forms are now available from Poole Runners or Poole Hospital Charity, giving runners plenty of time before June to find sponsors. The organisers hope to raise as much if not more this year and are asking every runner to pledge to raise a minimum of £10. Event Chairman Mike Towner of Poole Runners told us: “Last years event was very successful, we put this down to runners being given the opportunity to support such a worthwhile cause. We would love to increase numbers from 1459 to 1800 over the 5k and 10k runs. We also had record numbers 150 children per race in our

minithons last year which we would fantastic to see again.” Karen Bew, from the Radiotherapy department in the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital told us, “We are really excited about Poole Festival of Running supporting the Dorset Cancer Centre again this year. A group of us from Radiotherapy ran last year in both the 5k and 10k races and we are hoping to do the same again this year to support the event.” Horizon Honda, based in Parkstone, are the event’s main sponsor this year. Tony Roberts, Group Director of Horizon / Magna Group told us, “We are very pleased to have been able to assist, as a privately owned local business established in Poole over 40 years ago, we are very aware of the highest levels of care and support given to patients at Poole Hospital. Things to do

So you want to try powerboating? For many people, the idea of powerboating sounds fun, fast and exciting, but rather expensive. Not any more! I recently joined the Parkstone Bay Boat Club and within a week, I was out on the water in one of the club’s fleet of boats learning how to handle a 30 knot powerboat with safety and confidence. By my side, a qualified RYA instructor with many years experience of boating in and around Poole Harbour, on hand to show me the ropes! After donning a lifejacket, we began with a detailed run down of the boat and engine. A lot of new terms to remember, like anchor, bow, cleat and so on, but I quickly learned to differentiate between my port and my starboard. There’s a little red port left in the bottle, so the saying goes.. A quick check round the boat, switch on the battery and start the engine. The club’s Capelli 20 Open Sportsboats come fitted with modern outboard engines and electronic controls. They’re good all round family craft, safe and easy to use and ideal for learning with excellent handling and manoeuvrability. With a calm sea and window of fine weather approaching, we decided to give it a try. I attached the kill cord, which cuts the engine in an emergency and loosed the lines fore and aft and gently motored out of Parkstone Bay Marina. When you first take the wheel and

Learning about boat safety

Heading out to the open sea engine control lever it feels a bit like driving a car, but you quickly realise the boat steers from the stern and there’s a period of rapid re-orientation of the mind. Boat handling is very much dependent upon elements such as windage, tidal stream and momentum so there is a steep learning curve in knowing how to maintain control of the boat at all times. I spent the next hour or so practising leaving and returning to the jetty until I was confident in handling the boat in the sheltered waters of the Marina. The next step was to approach and pick up a mooring buoy out in the harbour under the influence of the wind and tide. Patience proved a virtue and after a little practise I was soon able to motor up to the buoy and tie a line. Next stop, the open sea! This was the most exhilarating part of the lesson. As we motored out of Poole Harbour, I learned about Collision Regulations, or the rules of the road for all boat users and a basic understanding of buoyage or how to steer a safe course between all the red and green buoys in the harbour. Cruising the open sea at speed is a most thrilling experience and the conditions this morning were perfect for a few high speed manoeuvres. Soon, we were skimming across the sea in Poole Bay and it felt like I was driving a Ferrari on an open road. With my experienced instructor on hand to give me some practical tips

45 about riding the waves, turning and trimming the boat so it planed perfectly in the prevailing sea conditions, I was thoroughly enjoying my first lesson in boat handling and seamanship. For the next trick, we motored over to Studland Beach and dropped anchor so I could learn about mooring whilst keeping a watchful eye on the weather. With the boat gently swinging on the anchor, we talked about wind speed and direction and its effect on our position. In the distance, a few rain clouds were approaching so it was time to weigh anchor and return to base. It had been a great initiation in the joys of powerboating. The following day, the weather had changed, the wind had got up and we decided to make a short passage to Poole Town and Cobb’s Quay. This gave me an opportunity of handling the boat in restricted areas and passing through the twin bridges and navigating up a narrow channel with a strong wind and tide to contend with. By now, the wind was gusting at over 20 knots and it took a lot of skill to bring the boat alongside the jetty without crashing the pontoon or being swept away. With a bit of practice under the watchful eye of my instructor, I succeeded in mastering the technique and felt confident in the final challenge, coping with a man over board. This is one of the most important manoeuvres in powerboat handling, as it’s necessary to get alongside a person falling overboard quickly and without danger of running them down or causing injury with the propeller. Since no one volunteered to jump overboard for my practise session, we had to make do with a fender and a length of rope. The water was choppy and the strong wind and current meant I had to react quickly to an ever-changing situation, however with my boat handling confidence growing I was soon able to get alongside the fender and hoist it aboard. Time now for a bit of theory. Back onshore in the club’s new training centre, I learned about tides and navigation in more detail. We discussed the gravitational effect of

Plotting a course on navigation chart the sun and the moon on the earth and how the sea level is constantly changing. This is particularly important in Poole Harbour as the average depth is only 18 inches and it is easy to run aground in shallow water when the tide goes out. I was also introduced to navigational charts and the use of a compass and spent time working out how to plot a position and plan a passage, all very important aspects of learning to become a safe and self sufficient powerboater. Finally I learned about summoning assistance in the case of an emergency. My two day course had shown me how to handle a powerboat with safety and confidence. It had also taught me a lot about the theory and given me the background knowledge to become a competent powerboater and I am now looking forward to many hours of fun and pleasure with the Parkstone Bay Boat Club. Club membership starts from £175 per month and members have the use of one of the club’s boats without incurring all the costs of ownership and maintenance. There a half a dozen boats in the club fleet to choose from so members can opt to use a boat to suit their needs and budget.
