Next month Nellie is taking us to Exmouth in Devon, where Hayden will take part in the National Surf Life Saving Championships. We will be camping in a nearby campsite and I am looking forward to sitting on the beach with my coffee, ‘watching’ Hayden competing. Young Technicians switch on career plans at Lighthouse A revolutionary new learning programme for young people at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, Young Technicians has been hailed as a great success and a valuable experience that has improved participants’ chances of working in the industry. The course is part of the innovative Young Programmers scheme at the heart of Lighthouse’s learning and participation strategy that over the next four years aims to develop the next generation of talented arts practitioners. The first intake recently completed a six-month pilot making use of the existing workforce at Lighthouse to gain creative, hands-on learning experiences. “It was a unique and fulfilling experience that you don’t get in many other places,” said one Young Technician. Another added: “The best part was the freedom and opportunity to put what we had been learning into practice, it allowed us to test ourselves and to be involved in a creative show.” The programme set out to develop technical theatre skills in lighting, sound and stage management by gaining supported hands-on experience with specialised in-house technicians in areas including basic health and safety, electricals, flying and working at height, sound desk operation, knots and splicing, basic lighting design and desk operation, effects and pyrotechnics and an introduction to stage management. The wider aim was to stimulate the participants’ interest in the arts, improve employment prospects, engage further with Lighthouse and develop their social skills and networks. The programme was delivered in 18 two-hour weekly sessions followed by a 12-hour day in the Concert Hall preparing the final event, a live music concert programmed, promoted, equipped, staged and managed by the Young Programmers courses. Selected by interview all eleven Young Technicians
were in full-time education and attended every weekly session. Nine members of the group paid the full £130 cost of the course with hardship grants of £100 and £60 made available to the other two. After the final event the Young Technicians all said they were more interested in the arts, had learned new skills, made new friends, felt happier and would recommend Lighthouse to friends, with 90 per cent saying they were more interested in pursuing a career in the arts and agreeing the course had improved other areas of their education. Libby Battaglia, Lighthouse Learning and Artist Development, comments: “It is such a thrill for our learning team at Lighthouse to see young people so engaged and excited about working behind the scenes as well as our technicians having the opportunity to share their wealth of knowledge and experience. Our volunteers supporting the programme also said how much they learnt during the programme which shows us the depth of engagement and is immensely satisfying for us as one of the cultural leaders in the region.” Young Programmers aims to help create a skilled, motivated and experienced workforce for arts organisations in the South West region, although there is enormous potential to replicate the scheme in other areas of the UK. As well as Young Technicians, courses were also run for Young Writers, Reviewers and Music Programmers with a total of 40 young people aged 14 to 30 taking part in the pilot programme.

Crossovers are popular in today’s motoring marketplace. But what is a crossover? Well, it’s a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a chassis more similar to a car than a traditional truck-based SUV. Most come with either two or four-wheel-drive, and having the fundamental elements of a car means a more contented ride. They also tend to return better fuel economy because of lighter construction and smaller engines. Suzuki’s SX4 S-Cross is one of the better value choices of this type of motor, although you may not have heard much about it. That’s because the Japanese automaker is a fairly small player within the UK car scene. Suzuki punches pretty hard above its weight though and, if the S-Cross is anything to go by, the manufacturer is only going to grow in strength in Britain. It’s a well made machine, packed with equipment and, even at flagship level, it only costs £25,149. The SX4 S-Cross’s bold and sporty design offers ample room for passengers and luggage. The front seats offer excellent support and hold you firmly in place, even on tight curves. Behind the wheel, the instrument cluster, although surrounded by a little too much cheap looking plastic, helps you focus on driving. For instance, an outsized speedometer and tachometer border a multi information display that shows anything from fuel consumption to time and outside temperature. High-rigidity in a car’s body is essential to handling, comfort, safety and performance. That’s why the SX4 S-Cross incorporates a large proportion of high-tensile steel for strength and lightness, helping to provide greater handling stability. The engine options are 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the latter, in top of the range SZ5 DDiS 120 guise and equipped with Suzuki’s four-wheel-drive ALLGRIP system.
The four-wheel-drive technology leaves no room for doubt that the SX4 S-Cross is the perfect fusion of family-friendliness, safety and performance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no hardcore mudplugger, but it’ll handle dirt, grass, snow, sand and a bit more – so it’s perfect for mini-adventures. The four-wheel-drive system is so adept because it has a variety of settings – AUTO, SPORT, SNOW and LOCK. You can select your desired mode for the terrain you find yourself on via a push and turn dial on the centre console. It works like this: AUTO prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions. The system uses two-wheel-drive by default and will switch to four-wheel-drive if wheel spin is detected. The SPORT setting is best for twisty roads. It makes maximum use of fourwheel-drive in response to how hard you press the accelerator. The SNOW option is optimal for snowy, unpaved and other slippery surfaces and uses four-wheel-drive all the time. LOCK is designed for extricating the car from snow, mud or sand. It does this by distributing high turning power to the rear wheels continually. Safety equipment hasn’t been overlooked either. Features include seven airbags for occupants and the bonnet provides impact absorption which lessens injury if the car hits a pedestrian. In fact, the SX4 S-Cross has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, according to independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, receiving the maximum five-star rating.

How just 10 minutes on a Whole Body Vibration machine changed my life, disability and my size Shake and Tone Poole opened in August 2014, to offer people just a pinch of the health, fitness and wellbeing benefits that I experienced. In March 2009, due to a trivial accident where the seat came away from the base. I twisted to the side and back, landing on an out stretched arm, causing a whiplash injury, damaging the muscles in the back of my shoulder. They set my pain off immediately. My friend explained that even though they are vibration plates, they move completely different to the gyms plates. These plates oscillate (not linear) and are a passive form of exercise. They are not as intense as the ones in the gym and she believed they would do me some good. I still said no! I didn’t want to take the chance and irritate the nerves more and go through that level of pain and discomfort again. The thought of vibration when you’re in pain, is far from appealing. In the end my friend pestered me for so long, that I agreed to go.
Was it all worth it? Yes! When we got back to the car, she asked how I felt. I realised I didn’t hurt. I was amazed that after just 10 minutes, my pain had gone. I said, “Oh, I’m in the least pain I have been in for years. I don’t hurt. I can feel where the pain should be, but it doesn’t’ feel like pain, it just feels like a thickness, probably where the muscles have locked up?” Her reply was “You’re also standing up straight”. Which I also hadn’t noticed. Talking about Wildlife...
Turning the Tide: Marine Conservation Fund Dorset’s seas are amazing. They are home to a magnificent myriad of marine creatures – sturgeons, angel sharks and crawfish to name a few! However, some of these species are now rarely seen or are gone altogether. Dorset’s fragile, underwater habitats are declining, with pollution, unsustainable fishing and climate change threatening these delicate ecosystems.
As part of our campaign, we are launching a seahorse adoption scheme, for a one-off payment of £20. Seahorses are an intriguing species who are masters of camouflage, and we want to find out more about them. As part of the Marine Conservation Fund, we’re hoping to be able to invest in equipment to help us monitor seahorses and other marine wildlife.
Dorset Wildlife Trust wants to save these beautiful, misunderstood marine environments before it’s too late… but we can’t do this alone. The Marine Conservation Fund is an exciting and important new initiative which aims to provide the vital funding required to secure a brighter future for our seas, which can then be enjoyed for many future generations.

Two areas we aim to secure as Marine Protected Areas are Studland Bay and Lyme Bay. Studland bay is home to enigmatic seahorses, colourchanging cuttlefish and rare rays. It is also one of only two nursery grounds in England for the endangered undulate ray. Lyme Bay meanwhile hosts a multitude of majestic marine giants including white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoise and basking shark. By protecting these fauna hotspots we will give this marine wildlife the chance to survive and thrive into the future.

If you’ve got savings, next time you receive a statement expect to see something rather strange. There’s been a hidden revolution of the savings rules, and it means when you’re paid interest, from now on no tax will automatically be taken off. It’s all due to the new Personal Savings Allowance (PSA), which launched at the start of the new tax year on 6 April. Previously, unless you were saving in an ISA, when you earned interest, the taxman took a bite. So for every £100 interest earned as a basic-rate taxpayer, you only actually got £80 (higher rate got £60). Yet now, if you earn interest within your PSA, you get £100 and you keep £100. For a detailed Q&A on it, read www.mse.me/PSA, but here are my quick needto-knows. - All savings interest is now paid gross, i.e., no tax will be taken off. - This works for ALL interest - not just savings accounts, but bank accounts, credit unions and peer-to-peer savings. However, share dividends aren’t included. - Basic 20% rate taxpayers can earn £1,000/yr interest tax-free. - Higher 40% rate taxpayers can earn £500/yr interest tax-free. - Top 45% rate taxpayers don’t get a PSA, so all interest is taxable. - Cash ISAs, premium bonds and other tax-free savings interest DON’T count towards the £1,000 (or £500) limit so you can get this interest too. - If you earn interest over the limit, you pay tax at your income tax rate, but only on the amount over the limit. It’s worth thinking about this for a moment. For a basic rate taxpayer, with cash in the top easy-access standard savings account, you’d need over £75,000 saved before you had to start paying tax on it. That’s why 95% of people won’t pay tax on their savings interest this year. As for most people tax is no longer an issue with savings, where you should have your cash has changed. It’s now usually simply a question of where you can earn the most interest. So first, check your savings today and find what they earn. You’ll be shocked - rates have plummeted. The first thing you should look at, even before saving, is clearing any expensive debt or overpaying an expensive mortgage (one where the interest rate is higher than the top rate you can earn by saving). After that it’s a question of putting each penny where it earns the most. So here’s my savings fountain to do that. Fill up each level if you can and then move to the next (all the accounts I’ve listed have the full UK £75,000 savings safety protection).
1. Help to Buy ISA. For anyone 16+ who’s never owned a home and may want to, these are usually a no-brainer. This is because as well as interest you can use it towards a mortgage deposit and 25% is added on top, up to a maximum of a free £3,000. The top payers are www.halifax.co.uk and www.santander. co.uk at 4%. For full help on if this is right for you, see www. mse.me/helptobuyisa 2. High-interest current account. Some accounts offer high incredit savings rates to entice switchers - it’s the only way to earn decent interest on decent amounts. The top ones are the www.Santander.co.uk 123 account paying 3% in between £3,000 and £20,000 (with a £5/mth fee, but that is often covered, as the account also pays cashback on bills) and the www.LloydsBank.com Club Lloyds account, paying 4% between £4,000 and £5,000. Others pay up to 5% interest, though on smaller amounts. For the full range and eligibility criteria see www.mse.me/topbanks 3. Regular savings. These pay high interest but only on small amounts, generally for a short time. They’re great for, er, saving regularly, but you can also trickle lump sums in there too. The top ones are linked to current accounts – 6% is possible for a year on up to £300 a month in www.Firstdirect.com’s regular saver and 4% on up to £250/month with the www.HSBC.co.uk Premier/Advance accounts. If you’ve got an M&S, Lloyds, Nationwide or Santander current account, see if one’s available to you too. 4. New £15,240 cash ISA allowance - 1.85% tax-free. A cash ISA is just a tax-free savings account and as it’s the new tax year, you’ve a new £15,240 allowance. Crucially, interest from this doesn’t count towards the £1,000 (or £500) PSA limit - so it’s good for those who’ll earn over that threshold. Yet for many there’s little point, see my www.mse.me/ISAsdead guide for when they’re still right for you. The top straightforward easy access deals are coventrybuildingsociety.com, paying 1.4% AER variable (minimum £1). If you’ve got poorly-paying old ISAs you want to transfer, the www.YBS.co.uk Triple Access Saver ISA is 1.35% but only allows you to make withdrawals on three days each year (minimum £100). You can earn more in fixed rate ISAs though, see www.mse.me/cashisas. 5. Fixed-rate savings. If you’ve got money left over, next consider whether you’re prepared to lock it away without access. If so, you can fix with a locked-in rate that’s usually higher than easy-access savings. The top straightforward 1 year deal is CharterSavingsBank.co.uk 1.91% AER (minimum £1,000) and www.sbiuk.com is 2.2% for 2 years and 2.35% for 3 (min £10k). 6. Easy-access savings. Anything now left over that you need access to can be put in here. Rates are low compared with everywhere else, but you can deposit and withdraw when you want. The top deal is www.ybs.co.uk at 1.3%, though it only allows one withdrawal per year. For unlimited withdrawals, the Income Bond from www.nsandi.com pays 1.26%, though the rate’s dropping in June, but www.sbiuk.com is 1.25%..

Local Celebrity of the Month
Local celebrity of the month... Tell me all about it! Just a few weeks ago Steph Wyatt won the title of Miss Dorset! Steph was born and bred in Poole and at the young age of 17, this is quite an achievement. I met up with Steph last week to talk to her about being a ‘celebrity’. I asked if she had always wanted to be a beauty Queen and she told me, “It is every girl’s dream to be in a pageant and I feel very lucky to be able to enter the competition.”
Steph has always been very close to her Dad and she told me on her first Cat Walk, her Dad had very proud tears pouring down his face. “Seeing him made my lips quiver” she told me, “making it difficult to smile!” “He has always been there for me and I have always been with him.” Steph continued, smiling. Being a beauty star is not as easy as it looks as there are many rounds that each girl goes through to eventually end with just one winner. In her next pageant for Miss England, which Steph is really looking forward to, she will need to pass a “Popularity Round”, a “Sports Woman” round where each girl takes part in a boot camp, a “Beach Beauty” round and even an “Eco” round where Steph will have to make her own dress from recycled materials! Steph’s ultimate goal is to travel the world helping others with projects. She feels she can be “a voice for others” and by doing that she can change things for the better. Right now Steph
Miss Dorset 2016, Steph Wyatt has also started a Law Degree, so she is going to be more than busy! There were 22 girls who entered The Miss Dorset competition, but in her next pageant for Miss England, being held in Southport, there will have been 22,000 girls all gunning for the prestigious title. Down to 50 girls in the final, Steph would like to be in the top 15. I believe she has every chance of that. As Miss Dorset, Steph is looking for sponsorship to help with her ambitions. Plant of the month Gerberas
It’s hard not to be filled with a sense of joy upon seeing a Gerbera. These bright and cheerful flowers come in a variety of vibrant colours: orange, yellow, pink, red and white and it’s no surprise that they are the fifth most cut flower in the world. Gerberas are in the Asteraceae family (also known as the Daisy Family) and are native to Africa, South America and Asia. When displaying Gerberas in your house, keep in mind they turn their heads towards the light so be careful about putting them near bright light. They have very long vase lives so make sure to keep their water topped up so you can see their beautiful colours for longer.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Family Camp with the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers! Well this was one Nellie didn’t want to miss. After all, despite her advanced years, Nellie loves running around, making a lot of noise at times (remember that exhaust…) and she loves the outdoors, so what better way to spend a weekend than with friends, learning lots of new skills and having fun. Nellie couldn’t wait. Stephen got everything ready. He is good at that you know… it is a man’s job isn’t it? Nellie was packed with chairs, sleeping bags, blankets, Kombi, the awning, cutlery, plates (we didn’t take the kitchen sink, as Nellie already has one) and of course that all important whistling kettle and coffee. Off we set into the rolling English countryside to Sixpenny Handley which is home of 1st Woodcutts Scouts. First things first, we had to set the awning up… so I made the coffee and supervised… You can see I have a very hands-on approach to all of this. In fact, one of the ladies commented

on how important my role was. I think that is what she said… The boys, alias Stephen and Hayden, did a fantastic job. We were all set up! The leaders. Well I take my hat off to them. They do such a great job and it is all voluntary, done in their own time, to help others. There are many, many good people on this planet. There was in fact coffee and tea permanently ready and all the food was supplied so we had nothing to worry about but relax and enjoy ourselves. The first evening was very straight forward… no challenges yet. The next day was a different story. I have to say I have never been a scout or a girl guide, so this was all new to me. Hayden has been a member for a few years now and loves it. The skills they learn, you don’t get from anywhere else these days, so I am always impressed with what he does. However, what I didn’t realise is that on family camp… you all take part! This was new to me and Nellie really didn’t know if she

29 would manage. Being blindfolded, led by a young leader in the forest and detecting what was hanging from a rope, was definitely a new concept. I thought the foil was a pine cone, but that’s a mistake anyone could make, isn’t it? Then there were the knot challenges, making a tent from string, building a large catapult, drawing on a neckerchief and putting Lego together to show something from the camp. The best part was making “smores”. Have you ever done that? Yummmm… delicious. You melt a marshmallow on a stick over the open camp fire and then place it between two chocolate biscuits, so the chocolate melts and smothers it. How good is that! The name comes from the fact… you want s’ more! That was a challenge I could do again and again. It didn’t help the diet, but I had to do it as I didn’t want to be seen to be not taking part. You can understand that can’t you? Nellie would have eaten them all, but she wants to keep her slightly figure. I refrained from commenting. The men did get very competitive on the catapult challenge. All that man power, wanting to catapult the furthest. It was great fun and although

we were the best (after the first go…) we were sadly beaten. In the evening there was the traditional camp fire led by a young leader in full song. Love it! Then we all took part in horse racing. This was inside the camp hall on a projector screen attached to a computer. How exciting! We all chose tickets hoping it was the winning horse and shouted like we could have won millions. Getting together, having time for our own children, as well as meeting other families is just so good. With our busy lives these days we don’t do enough of it. The whole weekend was fantastic. Nellie left in great spirits and would highly recommend scouting. Beavers start as young as six, then its Cubs form age 8 and Scouts from 10½. If you are an adult and want to help, meet others and learn new skills, why not go and be a leader, or helper. I am sure you would be welcomed with open arms. Nellie is loving the summer and we hope you are too! Where will she take us next…? By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter.
Jobs for August :-
• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!

Three new works by playwrights at the top of their game can be seen in Poole when Roundabout, an ingenious in-the-round plywood amphitheatre comes to Westfield Poole Park from 15 - 18 September. This vivid and immediate theatre experience features something for all ages from 7 upwards, providing the opportunity to see exciting new work in the world’s first pop-up, plug-and-play theatre from Paines Plough, the UK’s national theatre of new plays. The 4-day festival begins with Growth, a comedy about growing up and manning up from rising star Luke Norris. Tobes is young, free and having a ball. He’s successfully ignored his lump for two years but it’s starting to get in the way - cramping his style and, worse, affecting his sex life. So now there are pants to be dropped, and decisions to be
made... it’s a real ball ache. Love, Lies and Taxidermy is a boy meets girl story. Son of a Polish taxidermist meets daughter of a failing ice cream salesman at a medical research facility in Merthyr Tydfil. First date in Tesco and things are going well. But it’s difficult to fall in love when your parents need saving from themselves, their weird hobbies and the threat of a prison sentence. This offbeat love story about Mr. Tutti Frutti, a stuffed owl and the struggle to fit in is from the pen of writer Alan Harris (BBC Radio 4, National Theatre Wales, Sherman Cymru). Join three heroes on an epic quest to save the planet in I Got Superpowers For My Birthday - a brand new play for ages 7+ from award winning writer Katie Douglas. Ethan, William and Fiona are about as different as three almost-teens can be. The only thing they have in common is that tomorrow is their birthday. And they’ve just discovered they have superpowers. Which is lucky because someone needs to protect the world from The Darkness, an evil overlord with plans to turn everything to ice. “Roundabout is a completely self-contained, 168seat in-the-round auditorium”, Paines Plough Co-Artistic Director James Grieve explains. “It flat packs into a single lorry and pops up in a day, requiring no tools or specialist skills to assemble. F. W. Robins F.W. Robins, author and lecturer, had many interests, from the history of lighting to assisting with archaeological excavations. He became a member of the Egypt Exploration Society in 1920 and was also admitted to the Society of Antiquaries of London. He collected a great number of ancient pottery lamps and wrote a book on the subject, ‘The Story of the Lamp’. After his death his collection was broken up. Part went to the British Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Some of his lamps were also donated to the Priest’s House Museum, including examples of Roman, RomanoEgyptian, Palestinian, Graeco-Roman and Syrian pottery lamps. The Greeks improved the basic design of the lamp and from 600-300 BC, Greek lamps were made using a potter’s wheel. During the Roman period, further improvements were made. Lamps were moulded in two separate pieces and the filling hole for the oil became smaller, helping to prevent spillage. The use of moulds allowed for decoration and Roman lamps depict classical gods, animals and gladiatorial scenes.

MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
