Well it certainly was an interesting month of June with the EU referendum and the public decision to come out of the European Union. Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying basic 20% tax? If you’ve just answered yes, then you’re one of 4.1million couples due a free £212 a year, but the likelihood is you’re in the 80% who haven’t claimed it, so I’m going to tell you how. This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to ﬁnd out how few people know about it, and am starting to make a breakthrough. To inspire you, here’s just a few of the scores of recent tweets I’ve got on it. TingTing: @MartinSLewis THANK YOU! Just signed up for marriage allowance, £212 in our pocket. DO IT PEEPS ... it’s quick and simple to do! Matty: @MartinSLewis Thank you for letting us know about the Marriage Tax Allowance. Only took 2 minutes to complete and £212 saved per year. Q. Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If you’ve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than £10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under £42,385. You both must be under 80 (then there’s another tax break). Don’t overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as “I’m a volunteer”, “I only work part time”, “I don’t work”. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesn’t pay income tax? If you are, you count – simple as that. Q. How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance – that’s the amount you can earn tax-free – to their partner. Imagine Tyrone earns £10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for £1,060 of his taxfree allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So that’s £1,060 of earnings she would’ve paid tax on at 20% that’s now tax free. As 20% of £1,060 is £212, that’s your gain.

Q. How do you claim it? It’s a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/ marriage-allowance or call 0300 200 3300. You’ll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, it’s the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up – people do it the other way round and then wonder why they’re rejected. Q. Do I get it every year? Yes, it’s done via a change in your tax code that remains, so it’s £212 a year gain every year and once you’ve applied it’s done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them. Q. Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you can’t go back further than that. Q. What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn’t matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assessment bill. Q. What if I’m a non-taxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. @MoneySavingExpert

Talking about Wildlife... Marine Giants in Dorset There is nothing more delightful than catching a glimpse of a dolphin family as they splash through the waves off our beautiful coastline. If you’re in luck, you may see either common or bottlenose dolphins, but how many people know that our local seas are also home to other large marine species such as white-beaked dolphins, basking and porbeagle sharks, sunfish and minke whales? Last summer, huge numbers of barrel jellyfish caused a stir, and this coincided with a very rare sighting of a leatherback turtle, eating one of the jellyfish, in Lyme Bay. Loggerhead turtles have also been spotted, as well as the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtle. Turtles normally inhabit tropical seas but sometimes get caught in strong ocean currents, bringing them into colder waters that can kill them. Stranded turtles should never be returned to the sea. Any turtle sightings, dead or alive, should be reported immediately to Dorset Wildlife Trust by phone or social media. There is also disappointing news is that these amazing creatures are threatened

Alex Hill of Meyers Estates in Poole recently presented a cheque for ÂŁ200 to the Montacute School for Children with Complex Learning difficulties. Alex and his team give ÂŁ50 from every fee to a local charity as they feel that it is the responsibility of local business to support the community that supports them.

Tell me all about it! Local celebrity of the month... Liam Openshaw and his brother Ryan who live in Poole are fantastic athletes, swimmers, life savers, and all round sportsmen. Liam recently won the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace in March! He was then chosen for Team GB to represent Britain and went on to win the European round of the Biathle (run-swim-run) World Tour! I am absolutely sure we will be seeing lots of Liam and his brother in the next few years, and I am delighted that he has written a piece about himself for you to read and enjoy. Here is Liam... “How would I describe myself at the moment? I am a busy, happy, sporty 13 year old, squeezing in as many training sessions and competitions as I can into the week, and leaving just enough room to do my homework! I am a member of Poole Swimming Club, Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club, Poole Athletics Club and Dorset Pentathletes. I train about ten times a week – more running up to key competitions – mostly in the swimming pool but also strength work in the gym, running on the track, and then my favourite – on the beach and in the sea. In my spare time, I play the drums (I recently passed my Grade 3 with Merit) and I go to Poole Grammar School. I started Life Saving with Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club when I was eight and loved it from the start. I enjoy being out in the fresh air, powering into the sea for a swim and paddling a Race Board through the waves. Six months after joining the Club I was asked if I was going to go to the National Championships in Portreath, Cornwall. It sounded daunting and way above my ability, but I was assured that I would be fine, so signed up and went along. I was faced with waves over ten feet high - so big that I couldn’t paddle out through them on the Race Board, and ended up conceding the race from the wash at the foreshore. But I was hooked. And I have been to every National Championships since, eventually achieving

My Club has also started competing at the National Indoor Championships, this year held in April, where I was so pleased to gain a further six medals – two of each colour. But my biggest achievement to date in the sea was winning the South West Open Water Championships, entitling me to swim at the British Open Water Championships in Sheffield, where I came seventh. I’m aiming to qualify this year and finish in the top five! I had just turned nine when I entered the Poole and East Dorset Schools Swimming Gala, and to my surprise won the backstroke race. Although I had been learning to swim with Swalings School of Swimming since a toddler, I had not joined a competitive Swimming Club. After a trial, I started swimming with Poole SC a few times a week, where I developed my stroke technique. Four years later, I now swim up to eight sessions and cover 40 kilometres a week in the pool, plus a further session of Open Water training in the sea. I train with some of my best friends, and we always manage to find time to have a laugh after the hard work is done in the pool. We support each other, and any competitiveness in the pool during races, is gone when we are back on poolside. I love competing, because when I swim, I am not only trying to race well

23 for myself but also for my team mates and Club. But it’s not all easy! There are days that I race and I am slower than I could be – my brother, Ryan, is two years younger than me, but he is pretty good in the pool – he manages to squeeze out times just seconds behind mine. It’s then that I get determined to work harder and train better, to make sure I can stay ahead of him for as long as possible! I’m determined he won’t beat me in a head to head race – but then I think he is just as determined to try beat me (and it might not be too long before that happens)! He is Dorset Champion in all sixteen pool events this year for his age group, as well as British Champion in the Surf Swim on the beach, which makes me feel very proud of him (oh, and also a bit worried!). I’ve definitely learned that you have to make the most of every opportunity that is offered to you as you never know what it might lead to. Privileged to be nominated for a Poole Sports Council Award for swimming at the British Open Water Championships, at the ceremony last autumn, my dad noticed that one of the other recipients was a Modern Pentathlete. We did a quick bit of research, thought it looked interesting, and decided to have a go - I entered my first Biathlon at the South West Schools Championships last September – and won it. It has been a rollercoaster since, where I have been offered lots of exciting opportunities to

progress in the sports that I love. This took me to Crystal Palace and Birmingham to compete in two British Championship events (so I started running with Poole Athletics Club to improve my technique), where I finished first and second. I had become a British Champion!!! But I am very aware, that although I was the one that ran around that track, and swam down the pool, I couldn’t have done it without my family who pay for everything and drive me everywhere, and my coaches who train me to be the best I can be. Following the Champs, I was invited to join the English Talent Programme for GB Modern Pentathlon, which involves monthly training days where I have started to learn to shoot a laser pistol and to fence. This means that I can now compete in Modern Triathlons and Tetrathlons respectively. I still have a bit of work to do before I can do a full Modern Pentathlon as I will need to learn to ride a horse!!! Nonetheless, the opportunities are extensive in the swim-run-shoot disciplines, and I am proud to have been selected to represent GB at the European Championships in Portugal in July. More pleasing is the fact that Ryan was also selected to compete, so we can go together. I’m just a normal 13 year old boy. I like my PS4, Instagram and iPad! But I am so lucky to have the opportunities to compete in sports that I love, with really good friends. Who knows how far I can go... But one thing is for sure – I’m going to keep working hard, trying new things, and most importantly, taking every opportunity that comes my way. I am so happy to be fit and healthy. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Now you all know that Nellie, the Dorset Directories Campervan, is getting on a bit. She has aches and pains from time to time and last month her “ticker” just wouldn’t get started. A new pace maker (alias battery), was called in, the surgeons got to work (otherwise known as Longham Motor Engineers) and Nellie is now able to take us out again. Thank goodness! Such a relief. Well, my Dad is 82 years old and still goes match ﬁshing, lugging his gear up and down the banks, giving the younger men a good run for their money. Nellie is taking a leaf out of his book. In January this year Dad had his second knee operation - We now call him the Bionic Man. When I rang him all excited about us all going back to Santorini in Greece, you can imagine that he hesitated somewhat. My Mum was more than concerned. Taking after my Dad and not wanting to give

up on the idea, I kept ringing to see how he was doing. I knew Dad was determined to make it. Just like Nellie, who is afterall over 200,000 km’s old, I believe that the power of the mind as well as good medical care and good nutrition (diesel in Nellie’s case...) can overcome a lot. Santorini was a great holiday and one of the highlights was a trip to the live volcano. I never thought Dad would make it, but he did! This is what Dad wrote to his surgeon recently, who requested photos for his website... “On the 11th January 2016 I had a total knee replacement to my left leg which was carried out by Mr H Sharma. I was in hospital for 5 days. (My right knee was replaced some 7 or 8 years ago.) In late February I decided I was fit enough to go on the Family holiday due to commence on 2nd April 2016 to the Greek Island of Santorini. On the 2nd day of this holiday we booked a full day boat trip which would take us out to the various islands. Our first stop

29 was a Volcanic one which entailed a 1,500 meter ascent over black volcanic rock and cinders, about 2 hours there and back. The family did not expect me to attempt this, but I said if I have to turn back, I will. However, I made it to the summit and back, just some 81 days after the operation! And no after effects! To say how very grateful I am to Mr Sharma is an understatement!” Stan Outlaw.... Dad! So just like my Dad (who I am very proud of), Nellie will continue to take us out, overcoming whatever ailments. We hope she inspires you to do the same. Getting out and about in the fresh air is a great therapy. On that note, last month Nellie took us all the way to “The Reptile Centre” near Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Oh boy those snakes sent shivers down Nellie’s chassis and the burping toads certainly made her chuckle. At the centre you can discover more about British reptiles and amphibians and how they are being conserved in the New Forest. Britain’s only venomous snake - the adder - and rarest lizard - the sand lizard. It is a great place for adults and children to wander around, observe and learn and even take a picnic on the forest trail. Nellie, with her ‘new ticker’ thoroughly enjoyed driving there, through our wonderful terrain of fields and trees surrounded by gorgeous horses and ponies. Hayden loved taking photographs en route as we slowly motored along. Oh those lazy sunny days, don’t we just love ‘em! The coffee on arrival from Nellie’s whistling kettle was just what I needed. So yes, Nellie has had a busy month. There are lots of activities in July and August so we will not be bored and Nellie will have no time to rest, that is for sure! Where will she take us next…? This is satisfying because it means you don’t need to work the gears hard to utilise the clout on tap. Push the Renault into twisty country lanes and the car stays bonded to the tarmac. There’s a little bit of body roll noticeable, but it never disturbs ride comfort. In fact, the Kadjar arouses confidence in this sort of driving environment due to its consistently well-weighted steering. The brakes are excellent, although their urgency takes you by surprise on occasion. However, a capacity for quickly scrubbingoff-speed is no bad thing. The gearshift-action is a little heavy, and some diesel-din sneaks into the interior when the whip is cracked, but this Renault is not the sort of car bought by out-andout driving enthusiasts. It is a vehicle that will spend the majority of its time in town, on the school run or on family outings. Unsurprisingly then, the Kadjar is comfy for a family-of-four and handles scarred, urban road surfaces well, due to its nicelycushioned suspension set-up. The boot is better than the Qashqai’s, in terms of load space, and it has the same ingenious

flooring that can be elevated, dropped, or used as a partition to keep your possessions from tumbling about. Indeed, the Kadjar is a pleasant place to be, due, in no small part, to it having one of finest cabin’s in its class. From a tech point of view, the glass is just as full. The sat-nav system is a doddle and – in this flagship model – the car comes fully loaded with a topquality Bose sound system, Bluetooth, faux leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. Definitely more important than cabin toys, is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected. Equipment includes traffic sign recognition, lane-departure assist and even parking sensors at the front and the rear of the car. As mentioned, the Signature Nav is the top of the tree model, so unless you really need all the trimmings, you’ll enjoy the Kadjar just as much in its slightly lower-down-the ladder ‘Dynamique’ guise. The car is still well-appointed and represents excellent value for money, whether bought outright on a PCP finance deal. To be honest, it’s hard to justify buying a Nissan Qashqai now that the Kadjar is on the scene. The car is good-looking, it’s great to drive, it has a bigger boot and its price-tag is lower. Unless you’re desperate to have the Qashqai moniker ornamenting your drive, save yourself some cash and go for the French marque instead.

I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I ﬁnally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into

the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.

Addis’s Almanac This month’s article takes a look at a specific almanac, published in 1935. It is one of the many almanacs produced by Thomas Joseph Addis. The almanac provides information about local organisations and establishments, for example, Wimborne Minster Parish Church, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Wimborne Minster Urban and Rural District Councils, the Post Office and details of the local Magistrates. Almanacs were produced annually and included key information for the coming year. T.J. Addis was the business owner of Addis’s, a pharmacy which was in the town from approximately 1899 to 1981. Records show that he was living in Wimborne from 1911 but was already operating his business by this time. The pharmacy was located on the corner of Deans Court Lane and King Street. It also operated as an optician, offering eye examinations and a variety of eyewear for customers. The almanac includes details of the range of pills, tonics, embrocations and tinctures available from the pharmacy. There are advertisements for Addis’s hair restorer, compound syrup of figs and PhosphoTonic, an invigorating tonic that improved appetite and digestion. Advertisements placed by other businesses include Charles F. Wesley, the hairdresser, and Wimborne Minster Gas Company. The latter advert has the words ‘Let it snow! Switch on the gas light! Turn up the gas fire!’.

BARBECUED LAMB RECIPE

As summer approaches, you may find yourself wishing to utilise the outdoor barbecue. This recipe offers you the option to either use this for a BBQ or to cook inside and serve with your choice of vegetables.

Ingredients 1 lemon (juice and zest) 2tbsp soft light brown sugar 125ml olive oil 8tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves (crushed) 4tbsp mint (chopped) 400g half boneless leg of lamb

Equipment: Barbecue or griddle pan Method: To make the marinade mix together the lemon juice and zest with the sugar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and add seasoning. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and then mix in the mint and garlic. Lay the meat in a deep tray. Pour in half the marinade over the top of the meat and turn it over to coat it on both sides. Put the rest of the marinade to one side to use as dressing later. Then, cover with cling film and choose to leave it for 1 hour or alternatively overnight in the fridge. After, remove the lamb from the fridge, shake off any excess marinade back into the tray before inserting a skewer that goes from one corner to the opposite. Do this again with another skewer but in the opposite direction. You can either cook the lamb on a barbecue or a griddle pan and cook on a medium heat. Cook for between 15-20 minutes. Make sure to turn the lamb frequently until pink or cook for longer depending on your preference. Once you have finished, let the lamb rest for 10 minutes and remove the skewers. Serve with your choice of vegetables and pour over the rest of the marinade.
