A Very Happy 2016 to you! Stephen and I sincerely hope you had a good Christmas and were able to let the New Year in with family and friends. Traditionally this time of year is a time to reflect, make decisions and plan for the future. A new beginning, a fresh start and a determination to make things better in all aspects of life. For me this is always a good time. Being a northern lass we always celebrated New Year with family. The New Year was ‘let in’ by the man of the house who stood outside in the cold, holding a lump of coal and some money and was let back in on Big Ben’s strike of twelve, followed by hugs and kisses and a perfectly tuned rendition of Auld Lang Syne by an inebriated gaggle of family members. Oh what fun!

I tried this one year here in the South, but didn’t explain to Hayden, our son, what was going on. We rushed in just before midnight, switched BBC 1 on, ready for Big Ben and I thrust Stephen out of the door. Poor Hayden was fraught! “Why have you pushed Daddy outside!?” he shrieked, trying desperately to open the door and let his poor Dad back in! “No, No! Don’t do that!” I screamed back. It was all too much. We did laugh afterwards but I don’t think Hayden has been the same since. The things we do to our children... Traditions do die out and sometimes I think it is a real shame. Congratulations to K Edwards who won the High Tea for Two at Quayside Emporium last month. Why not have a go at the prize wordsearch this month. Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife round-up for 2015 Dorset’s wildlife has once again provided us with some interesting and controversial news stories in 2015. Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) Communications Officer, Sally Welbourn, takes a look back over the last year.
BADGER CULLS DWT was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that the badger cull went ahead in Dorset in the autumn. In 2013 the conservation charity started a badger vaccination programme on selected DWT nature reserves in Dorset, to demonstrate a humane alternative to culling. Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) is a devastating disease, with serious implications for farmers who lose stock as a result, but DWT believes there are better and more effective ways of controlling the disease, such as better biosecurity, badger vaccination and, in the long term, cattle vaccination. JELLYFISH ON THE UP Jellyfish are fast becoming a common sight along our shores and in our seas, with sightings being recorded right up until November! Eight jellyfish species have been recorded in Dorset, including the Compass, Moon, Barrel and Blue Jellyfish. A mild winter in 2014 and warmer sea temperatures, longer sunny days and an upwelling of nutrients from the water column all created the Spring Plankton Bloom – and the perfect conditions for Jellyfish to feed in throughout 2015.

GRASS FREE LAWN! On dry land, DWT launched the UK’s first ever community grass free lawn in Dorchester. 1500 plant trays were given to 78 individuals and families, local schools and community groups in preparation for the planting day in April. The result was a patchwork of flowering plants, rather than grass. Research has suggested that this type of lawn is fantastic for pollinating insects and other wildlife, and additionally it flowers all year round so it’s nicer to look at, requiring less maintenance than a traditional turf lawn! WHAT’S YOUR ‘WILD LIFE’? The launch of the My Wild Life campaign has been a big hit with wildlife lovers in Dorset. We’ve asked people to think about what wildlife does for us, and how ‘wild’ their lives really are. One common theme in the stories we’ve received is the mutual benefit for wildlife and people from volunteering work. Singer urges Cherries to ‘Never Give Up’ with charity single A song dedicated to AFC Bournemouth and their fans launched last week with a party at Canvas Bar in Bournemouth, which included a special screening of the accompanying video, which has already had over 5000 hits. The track, entitled ‘Never Give Up’, has been written and recorded by Bournemouth based singer / songwriter Chris Manning, who is donating all proceeds from the sale of the single to Lewis-Manning Hospice in Poole. Chris, an accomplished and well-known local entertainer, wrote ‘Never Give Up’ having been inspired by the Cherries near demise and subsequent rise to the pinnacle of English football’s elite. The song captures the spirit of AFC Bournemouth’s determination, not only to survive in league football but to fight their way all the way up to the Premier League. Chris took it upon himself to write and perform the song, which is available now on iTunes, and raised funds from local businesses to pay for the the filming of the music video, which got its first showing on ITV’s Meridian News following AFC Bournemouth’s historic win at Premier League champions Chelsea before conquering Manchester United at home 2-1. Chris was thrilled to receive huge praise and support from Saxe Coburg and Lovett International’s MD Max De Kment, who has championed the song from the minute he first heard it and is also featured as the sports commentator in the video. Other local businesses that have supported the project include, The Rope & Anchor Pub on Poole Quay, Premier Sports Solutions, Play
Gold Bournemouth, Aruba / Westbeach, CANVAS Loft Bar and NVS Media. After a recent visit to the Hospice Chris has said, “I’m thrilled to have been able to create and write a song that no only represents and celebrates the historic success of my local football club but it was also an opportunity for me to remind all of us all to never give up on our own personal hopes, dreams and life aspirations.” Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager at LewisManning, said, “We were really touched when Chris got in touch to say he wanted to support the hospice. We laughed about the ‘Manning’ connection but Chris said he actually choose us because he had heard so many people in the community comment about the wonderful care we give to people locally. The project ticks all the boxes in terms of Chris’ love of football, singing and song writing and for AFC Bournemouth and we urge as many people as possible to download the single for Christmas. Hopefully the song will give the Cherries and their fans the boost they need and at the same time raise some money for us to continue to help people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.”

A four pawed health kick for 2016! New Year is often a time when people think about their health and when resolutions to go to the gym or to start a diet are made (and subsequently broken!). One thing that many people are unaware of is the health benefits of having a dog in their home. These benefits go far beyond the physical improvements associated with gym membership or dieting. Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology Dr Deborah Wells reviewed a number of previous research papers concluding that dog ownership can be shown to help prevent us from becoming ill, facilitate recovery from ill-health, reduce levels of anxiety, loneliness and depression as well as enabling greater social interaction for owners. Health psychologist Dr June McNicholas agrees with this final point, observing that the opportunity for social interaction that comes with having a dog is a major reason for the increased health in dog owners while adding that, “For older people, an animal can fulfil the ‘need to be needed’, perhaps after children have left home. In some cases, the social support offered by an animal is greater than the support another human could offer.” Dog ownership obviously brings with it a large amount of responsibility and commitments something that many, for a number of reasons, are unwilling or unable to take on. You don’t necessarily have to own a dog to gain these benefits as many charities are often looking for puppy walkers or dog foster families.
Alex Brill took another route and joined dog boarding company Wagging Tails as a dog carer. She now welcomes guest dogs into her home for their holidays when their owners go away and in addition to the health benefits of having dogs around also receives a small payment for looking after her four-legged guests. “For me, dog ownership is not possible, so this is a great way of getting to enjoy all sorts of dogs at times that suit me. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van At the time of writing this Nellie is gearing up (literally) to go to Oxford for Christmas. She is sooo excited! As we haven’t been yet, due to the magazines going early to print and making sure Royal Mail receive them all in time to get them to you in January, I am going to tell you about the long and distant firework night that Nellie took us to... In fact she took us to Poole Quay to go on a boat trip! Personally I love Bonfire Night and always have done. Nellie didn’t seem too perturbed on the way by the terrifically loud bangs and awe inspiring colours in the sky. We arrived at Poole Quay well in time for the sail. Meeting 15 or so friends, it was all going to be very exciting! Nellie couldn’t wait. Of course, being a mature lady of 50 (and I will be 51 by the time you read this!) I was very calm and not the least bit eager to get on board... we can’t show that after all, can we? Or can we..? I think I embarrass Hayden sometimes with my enthusiasm, for ‘my age’. I am good at doing that.

All aboard!! Nearly time to cast off... We all boarded the Greenslade pleasure boat, filing on one by one as if on a school outing, all very well behaved. Nellie is factually too fat to get up the gangway so waited patiently in the car park. Sometimes we need a necessity level to lose weight, don’t we! Poor Nellie has also had some other problems recently and we are thinking of getting better health insurance for her. I did tell the insurance man that she is famous and would need a separate policy for her “derrière” but he didn’t seem to take me seriously. I wonder why? Once on board we found seats at the back of the boat, so a great place to see everything that was going on. The boat only allows enough passengers for all to sit upstairs which I think is a really good idea as you certainly want to take in the atmosphere and get a full view. At a cost of only £5 each I thought the whole trip was a bargain. What you also get is a night sail around the harbour before bobbing up and down to watch the fireworks. We were all well wrapped up with hats, scarves and gloves. The

27 weather had been horrific during the day with heavy winds and pouring rain, so we were a bit worried to say the least, but magically it all cleared up, the winds died down and there was a very slight drizzle which made the sail along the harbour eerily dramatic. One disappointment was that tea and coffee was not being served on our boat. Not only do I like a coffee from Nellie’s whistling kettle, but I would also have liked a hot cuppa while floating around in the dark night air. Never mind. The fireworks once they started were spectacular! The view from the boat is amazing and I do highly recommend this trip. The lights from the Quay buildings as a back drop to the gargantuan, sensational lights in the sky are thrilling and certainly get the heart racing. Or again am I just showing my age? Mustn’t get too excited now... The fireworks were continuous for about 20 minutes, none stop. The Council and Sponsors of this event really do need a Commendation for putting on such a stunning show. We were all standing in awe, amazed, with choruses of “Oooohs and Aaaahs” all expressed in unison. The atmosphere was electrifying! (Where was John Travolta?)

Massive fireworks lit up the sky Ending with a breathtaking finale there was an enormous cheer and lots of clapping. Isn’t this what life is really all about, fun with friends and family? Once back on land we all set off to go to a friend’s house for her 60th Birthday celebration. We did laugh about having put on such a good show for her. Along the Quay were a few stalls including one serving candyfloss, and boy does Hayden love his candyfloss. You can see that in his face! Cheeky. Barbara, the Birthday ‘girl’ had prepared a delicious chilli for us, in which she put some chocolate. It was yummy and just what we needed after our cool night at ‘sea’. A perfect end to a perfect night. What more could we ask for? A great night out with friends. Nellie was grinning from headlight to headlight all the way home. Poole Jobs Hub Project Poole Jobs Hub Project is a successful community project delivered by Poole Council for Voluntary Service and supported by community groups, including Bourne Valley Action Group, the Borough of Poole, housing providers and commercial partners and has been helping local people for 2 1/2 years. The project has provided FREE help to over 570 individuals with job seeking activities such as CV writing, job applications, interview skills and using computers as well as signposting to other organisations for training and volunteering opportunities. There is a friendly team of staff and volunteers at each venue available to help on a 1:1 basis in a relaxed environment. There is free access to computers, telephones, printing and refreshments. We are proud to have supported over 180 people into employment and 80 people into volunteering and/or training opportunities.

My Success Story “I am 59 years old and went through a very painful divorce in 2002. Since then I have had a number of difficult work situations. I have been quite stressed and always seem to be getting into disputes with people. Any relationships that I had did not work out. Physically I put on a lot of weight and I felt quite unhappy and down. My back started to hurt more and more and prevented me from exercising. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Oakdale Library Gardens Group A new group has been formed at Oakdale Library to take over the responsibility of the Gardens. Welcome to OLGA – Oakdale Library Gardens Association. The group has been set up primarily to raise funds for the upkeep of the gardens at the Library, but if you are interested in gardening and would like to join the group and do a bit of not too serious digging, weeding, pruning when necessary and general tidying up, then please get in touch with the Library Staff, who will be pleased to inform you when the group meet (dates vary throughout the year). The Library staff like to include the gardens in as many activities as they can and we in the Association are only too willing to help. In December we helped change the Staff Room into Santa’s Grotto and entertained the children who had come to the Saturday activity. On Sat 30th January, we will be celebrating the Chinese New Year – this year it is the Year of the Monkey – wonder what monkey business we will get up to! On Sat 6th February we will be helping with National Libraries Day and will be serving tea and biscuits, and on Mon 15th February at 4pm the children will be making lanterns and from 5pm we will be decorating the garden with lanterns. Many more things are planned throughout the year, so come and join us and have some fun.
