Ashley Blinds open new showroom in Poole More good news from Ashley Blinds. They are pleased to announce that their new showroom and office will be opening on 1st February 2013 at 325 Wimborne Road, Poole, that’s at the Oakdale traffic lights. The owners say that they have recently experienced a surge in new customers and need more space to maintain their very high level of customer support and service. They believe the increase has come about as Ashley Blinds now have a greater range and choice of product than any other similar company in the area. This year has seen Ashley Blinds & Curtains receive public accreditations from Trading Standards and from Checkrade. They have also received accreditations within the industry certifying them for work in schools, prisons and public places such as government buildings, plus they have received manufacturing accreditations for straight and bent or curved tracking, with cord or hand drawn operation. They still provide a rock solid service for every type of internal and external blind plus solar inserts and window film where blinds may not be the ideal solution. The new building will also incorporate training facilities to further enhance the extremely high level of knowledge and

expertise customers have come to expect from Ashley Blinds. Martin Jardine, owner of Ashley Blinds & Curtains said, "Our new facility is there to support our home visits as there is only one place a customer can really see if a fabric works or not. Our new showroom is here to help this process and will in no way replace the home visit. Ashley now have over 14,000 satisfied customers throughout Dorset. Will you be their next one? Call 01202 661920 for an appointment.

Happy New Year to all in Poole! Well we had a fantastic Christmas with my family up in Hull. There is nothing like 22 northern family members getting together. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t quite get the time off as I wanted and spent quite a lot of it in the kitchen! No rest for the wicked I realised, smiling… Hayden was thrilled with all his presents. On Christmas Eve I said in a rather hopeful way, “8am tomorrow Hayden”, to which he replied “Ok Mummy.” To my astonishment he woke up at 7.49am and whispered “It’s Christmas Day Mummy!” I replied “Oh Yes!” and then Hayden got back into his airbed on the floor… I was speechless. A few minutes later at 7.54 he whispered “Just 6 minutes to go Mummy!” I smiled. Then at 7.58 he suggested, “If we go downstairs now Mummy it will be 8am by the time we get there.” This really touched me. We are very lucky. It is back to some normality now after our New Year’s celebrations. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? I have made some and I think the key is to plan them out and set small goals, one at a time. That way I think I can achieve them. Good luck with yours! We have a full Poole Directory for you this first month of 2013. The trades and business people eagerly wait to hear from you. Do use the full index at the back to find what you are looking for and please mention The Poole Directory when making any calls. This makes all the difference. We also have a variety of articles for you to read. If you have a club, society or event coming up that you want to promote, make sure we tell the residents in Hamworthy, Longfleet, Oakdale, Lower Parkstone, Lilliput and Canford Cliffs! If you have a business in and around the area please call. We can definitely help you be more established and successful. Wishing you all a terrific 2013! All the Very Best,

Debbie and Stephen

Homes for nesting birds As we enter the midst of winter, it’s time to clear out the nest boxes in our gardens. Nest boxes provide sites in which birds can roost and are particularly important during the breeding season. Some birds will begin t o fight o ver space as early as February. The nest boxes in your garden must be clean to protect birds from pests and disease. Unfortunately, old nests are infested with fleas, feather mites and parasites, which remain in nest boxes throughout the winter months. In order to clear your nest boxes of these parasites, remove the old nests and debris. Next, cover the nest box in boiling water. Allow the house to dry completely before closing the lid. Do not use chemicals or insecticides as these can be harmful to birds. As you clean your nest box, you may come across unhatched eggs. It is legal to remove these from the nest between August and January and they should be disposed of to leave the nest clean for the next breeding season. Before you return the nest box to its location, check for hazards such as

PD January 2013 page 8

loose hinges, nails and splinters. You can fill the bottom of your clean nest box with wood shavings and birds may choose to roost there over winter, but there is no need to put anything inside. Do not inspect nest boxes when they are in use. Ensure your garden is equipped with the appropriate food, water and nesting material, which can include dog hair a n d t he co nt ent s o f y o u r o wn hairbrush! Happy bird watching! Coming up: Tuesday 19th February Nest Box Event and Green Fayre for all the family, including free nest box building. Verwood Opportunity Centre, Brock Way, Verwood, BH31 7QE. For more information about events or how to help birds in your garden, visit dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk. Nesting box Photo: Nicky Hoar

SHARP in Liverpool and Bournemouth & Poole Although a person may have withdrawn physically from alcohol or drugs, the mental and emotional dependency to substances remains powerful. Residential treatment does not suit everyone, for instance, if parenting responsibilities make a long stay away from home impractical. Our SHARP projects (Self Help Addiction Recovery Programme) in Liverpool and Bournemouth & Poole are high intensity 12-step day treatment centres at the heart of the community. The projects offer a rare opportunity for clients to live in their own homes while engaging in a fulltime, comprehensive treatment programme. Clients are engaged in one-to-one and group therapy, facilitated by hi ghly qualified counselling staff. There are also women’s and men’s groups where gender-specific issues can be aired. At our SHARP centres clients are offered the chance to sing in the ‘Raucous Caucus Recovery Chorus Choir’ and perform at events.

within our SHARP Bournemouth & Poole centre, offers practical skills in a number of vocational disciplines. Finding a new role in life and gaining the skills and qualifications to move on can present a daunting hurdle after recovering from dependence on drugs and alcohol. The programme helps clients to rebuild confidence as well as providing a daily structure and purpose which may be lost in addiction. The project covers wood skills including joining and picture framing in addition to creative skills such as photography and graphic design. The courses enable service users to gain useful practical abilities and communication skills, plus finance and budgeting experience. The mentoring and support they receive at the project is equally vital in raising self-esteem and sustaining recovery. Around 80 clients a year are supported by Working Recovery.

Working Recovery Initiated by a former service user who understood the need for effective training for people recovering from addiction, Working Recovery, situated in Boscombe, Bournemouth, “Last Christmas I gave my eight year old daughter a hand carved wooden toy I’d made at Working Recovery. I’ll never forget the look on her face. It was my first Christmas I could look her in the eye and feel proud.” Mick

Sign it! Ltd goal is to provide communication support for profoundly deaf people. Sign it! has a history like no other, ranging from supporting individuals through DLA claims to being part of parliamentary debates; supporting families at doctors through to schooling. This is by no means an exhaustive list! One of the largest issues we have come across is employment, or more precisely lack of it! We decided to do something about it... In 2006, Rob Eaton set up a garage with the aim of training three profoundly deaf young men in mechanics... Today, we employ five profoundly deaf young men and seen tens of other profoundly deaf and disabled people go through our doors of training and gone on to successful employment in other stable jobs. The

communication support Sign it! provides varies from day-to-day training, NVQ courses to team meetings, and continues throughout their careers. In April 2010, Sign it! Upholstery was set up with the aim to train profoundly deaf young adults. We have two young ladies who are now working here and are being trained in upholstery. All good s are made and reupholstered to your individual requirements; varying from dog beds, dining room seats to car interiors! So please, come and support our businesses! The Leonardo Trust: Looking after our local carers The Leonardo Trust is a charity which was founded over ten years ago, in Poole, to help people who care for a loved one at home, full-time. Being a full-time carer is the only job where you work all day, every day, with no time off for holidays or if you feel ill, and we understand the stress that this can bring. There is a real need for unpaid carers to be able to take an occasional break, and we understand that they may need a little help with funding. This might be a weekend away or a short holiday, but everyone’s needs are different, so we like to hear from the carer what would be of most benefit to them, even if their request seems unusual. We might also be

able to pay for a few hours extra sitting service, or help with respite care costs. We can help people who are ineligible for other help, although as a charity we cannot help people who are easily able to afford what they need. We also have Carers’ Coffee, and Men’s Coffee, Mornings each weekday morning 9.30 – 1 at our office. 5 Dunyeats Road, Broadstone opposite the Post Office. Please ring for details. Contact us on 01202 698325 or by email on info@leonardotrust.org. Visit: www.leonardotrust.org.

A ‘Wheelie’ good design A Poole schoolgirl rode off with a brand new bike after winning a competition to design a cycle helmet. Organised by Coles Miller Solicitors and LV=Streetwise, the competition was conceived to promote cycle safety and was won by seven-year-old, Kira Cook, a student at Yarrells School in Poole. Featuring solar powered fairy lights, Kira’s winning design was inspired by the ecoschool she attends and the aerodynamic shape of the Olympic cycling helmets. “I learnt to ride in the summer holidays,” said Kira, who chose her new wheels and cycle helmet from On Yer Bike, Charminster, a supporter of the competition. “It’s purple and has 18 gears,” she added. The bike was presented to Kira at the LV=Streetwise Centre VIP Event, where manager, Alison Shelton, announced

PD January 2013 page 14

another 89 cycle helmets would go to runners up from schools across the county. “We would like to thank Coles Miller, who helped organise this competition and invested lots of cash into the operation,” said Alison, who has been working with the solicitors to help improve cycle safety.

Sleeping Beauty in Bournemouth! The story begins at Princess Rose’s christening, which is rudely and hilariously interrupted by the evil, yet lovable, witch Carabosse, splendidly played by Su Pollard. Skip forward 17 years and we meet the princess on the eve of her 18th Birthday, and of course her Prince Charming, Prince Asa of Benidorm. I’m sure I wasn’t alone when I thought that the Princess was one lucky girl, aside from the whole curse thing of course. The traditional ‘panto’ sense of humour was ever present, and cleverly worded to have children and adults alike roaring with laughter. The audience were also singing along and thoroughly enjoying the starstudded interactive entertainment laid out before them. The show was scattered with performances featuring modern tunes, adapted to illustrate this age old tale perfectly, and of course to get the audience boogying; the musical numbers were brilliantly orchestrated. The local dancers were absolutely superb, with a range of ages but consistently fabulous talent. And on a school night! We were relieved to see that Colin Baker made it back from the jungle in one piece as he was perfectly cast as the wonderful Nanny Nelly. In her wig and brightly coloured mismatched clothes, she never failed to animate the audience as she tried her best to keep the other characters in check. In particular Happy Harry, played by Chris

PD January 2013 page 26

Jarvis, who had a tendency to take anything Nanny Nelly said quite literally, with hilarious consequences. I would suggest that you do not sit in the front if you are adverse to a water pistol or two, but that is arguably the best seat in the house for catching sweets. Tough choice. A massive acknowledgement is owed to Happy Harry (played by CBeebie’s Chris Jarvis) for not only performing magnificently, but also writing and directing the whole show. It was incredible to not only watch, but to get involved in. Highly recommended!

If you have a little spare time and would like to serve in one of our shops, go to our website to check out your local store or if you are local to Parkstone, pop in and ask the manager for a volunteer form. Alternatively you can ring the shop on 01202 735454.
