Happy Valentines Day to all our wonderful readers! This is the time of year we sit and think about the sunshine, warmer times and the ability to get out more again. Stephen, myself and Hayden, (with Nellie the campervan of course) have started to do more walking, even on cold days, so long as it is dry. It is a great way to lift the spirits, get away from the TV and blow the cobwebs away. We had a wonderful walk to Moors Valley last week and even met friends on the way. What a success. So, if you are able to get out I do think it helps. Nellie also took us on a “Murder Mystery Walk” around Wimborne… in the dark! What fun that was. I do hope you have time for a read and better still try a “Treasure Trail” for yourselves. You can even win £100 if you enter their competition!

Transforming Poole After Dark The first Light Up festival is coming to Poole, and will show the town in a completely new light. After dark on Thursday, February 15 until Saturday, February 17, Poole will be transformed using light art. Sponsored by Poole BID and funded by Arts Council England, the festival will present art forms and artworks new to Poole. A key element of the festival is the involvement of the community and artists that are working with local schools on a series of projects. The festival also has a number of opportunities to get involved such as helping with stewarding, artist support and interacting with visitors – a great way to gain experience of working at a major arts event*. Designed to challenge the perception of art and provoke visitors to participate and become part of the festival, the theme of ‘Identity’ will be explored using projections, interactive light and sound. Jonathan Sibbett, chair of Poole BID, commented: “We’re so thrilled to be involved with the Light Up Poole festival, it’s set to be a fantastic showcase of the creative talent we have locally. We hope to build on the success of this and have it become a regular addition to the Poole event timetable. There’s something for everyone over the three days and of course it’s a great start to the 40th year celebrations for Lighthouse.” Some of the festival highlights include: :: Seeglass – an animated light sculpture by Stuart Langley who has worked with sea glass to be lit and transformed by designs created in the Seeglass app. Visitors can create their own designs at seeglasspoole.co.uk which may be incorporated in the final sequence. :: FLO – a new mobile game from Bournemouth-based designers Amuzo
working as Rogue Games, is to be premiered at the festival. Visitors will be able to play the game projected outside Lighthouse; the goal is to travel as far as you can above and below ground. Prizes will be awarded each night for the player that lasts the longest. :: Film poetry – using spoken and printed words, visual images and sound, film poetry celebrates collaboration. Working with ArtfulScribe, Poole Museum is hosting workshops and film poems will be projected in Falkland Square and screened at Lighthouse in the spring. Participants are also invited to enter a competition to be judged by photographic artist Helen Dewberry and poet-filmmaker Chaucer Cameron. The top three films will be projected at town centre venues during the festival and ten shortlisted films will be shown later at Lighthouse. A prize of £500 will be awarded for the winning title. :: Sounds of Poole / Arts Conversations – Sounds of Poole is a music technology project created by SoundStorm. Working with sound artist Jon Adams, students have recorded sounds from the town and created a soundscape album to be played at the Fish Shambles during the festival. Jon is also hosting Arts Conversations, a series of informal talks based around the artworks on show.

Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to find food, so they need all the help they can get! Actor Nigel Havers becomes Patron of Julia’s House Nigel Havers has become a Patron of Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity.
The actor pledged to support the work of the Julia’s House after visiting its new children’s hospice in Wiltshire. Nigel said: “I am delighted to be supporting Julia’s House as a Patron. Having seen the Devizes hospice for myself, I have been bowled over by the wonderful facilities and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. How lovely for Wiltshire families to be able to access so many marvellous things – like the amazing bath and the sensory room – which they don’t have at home. “What impresses me most is how Julia’s House staff really get to know every member of the families and support them is so many ways. I look forward to being part of this very special charity.” To celebrate his new role he invited
a group of Julia’s House siblings – brothers and sisters of children with life-limiting conditions – to join him for a VIP visit to the London Palladium where they had the chance to see him in an entirely different role, starring in the panto Dick Whittington. Afterwards the delighted youngsters were greeted by Nigel and whisked off for a backstage tour where they also met fellow cast members Julian Clary and Ashley Banjo of Diversity fame. Nigel Havers joins a line-up of Patrons that includes Martin Clunes, Eddie Howe, Guy and Jacqui Ritchie, Jasper Conran, Trudie Styler and Rupert Everett.

Dolphin Shopping Centre rounds off a successful year of fundraising for Lewis-Manning Hospice & Chestnut Nursery The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole has raised £368 over the festive period for each of its nominated charities for 2017, LewisManning Hospice and Chestnut Nursery. Christmas fundraising took place during Santa’s Snowball Trail at the shopping centre throughout weekends in November and December. The shopping centre has added £368 to the fundraising pot for each charity following Christmas fundraising activities. John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, said: “We were delighted to support both Lewis-Manning Hospice and Chestnut Nursery throughout our fundraising activities last year. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank shoppers for their kind donations throughout the year, and in particular over the festive period.” Lewis-Manning Hospice is a charity providing day care and end of life care to around 900 local people each year living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in East Dorset. Fundraising activities for the hospice included an event in Poole Park in September for which the Dolphin donated floating candles. ‘Time to Remember Walk’ helped raise more than £2,000 for the Hospice. William Roberts, director of development at Lewis-Manning Hospice, said: “We are very happy that the Dolphin Shopping Centre chose Lewis-Manning Hospice as one of its nominated charities. A sincere thank you to everyone who has donated, we really appreciate it. The hospice provides care to over 900 local people with life-limiting illnesses every year and this is only made possible by the support of our wonderful community.” Chestnut Nursery is a local project which aims to use horticulture to restore well-being
for adults with severe and enduring mental illnesses. Last year, the shopping centre raised a total of £646 for the mental health charity and plant nursery. Last year was a first for the Dolphin Shopping Centre, with its very own pots of honey going on sale, produced from the beehives of its own rooftop garden. Jars of honey were sold at the centre, raising £278 for Chestnut Nursery. Also, in the run up to Christmas, staff from Chestnut Nursery were given space in the shopping centre to sell Christmas stock which helped raise an additional £700 for the plant nursery. Angela Mansbridge, project manager at Chestnut Nursery, said: “We would like to thank the Dolphin Shopping Centre for all its support and hard work raising funds for us. We will be using the money raised to buy materials and items needed for our winter renovation projects. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van It was a chilling dark winter’s night. We arrived at Walford Mill Craft Centre all wrapped up with scarves, gloves and torches, ready for our “Murder Mystery” walk. Who did it? What with? These were the allimportant questions and we had just 2 hours to follow the clues and discover the culprit. Would we solve the Mystery in the Vestry? Ivana Cramp had been a keen member of the Minster Choir for years. She had recently come into a large inheritance when her body was found. Was this a deed of greed… or because Ivana had an overpowering,

flat voice? We were about to find out. This is all fiction of course but we really got into the ‘spirit’ of things. Nellie had inadvertently come across “Treasure Trails” while surfing the internet one evening. She is getting very clever as you can see! These trails are described as ‘the fun way to explore’ and can be purchased online at www.treasuretrails.co.uk or often in tourist information offices. There are a series of clues which take you all around a particular area, giving you facts and some history about local sites, whilst you find the answers to each piece of evidence and finally eliminate all but one name and the weapon used. At that point you have the guilty party! There are many places to explore and it is a great way to get to know somewhere. Not all are murder mystery trails, so have a look and

see if there is one where you live or are visiting. It really is a fun way to get around! There were twelve of us taking the challenge that night, wanting to solve the mystery. We tried to guess from the list of people we were given, who ‘did it’ before we started. Julie got it right! How did she know I wonder… Was she really an accomplice? Now Nellie’s imagination was running riot and she was just taking this too far. I have had words with her. It was so much fun. Some of the clues do need some deciphering, others are more straight forward, but each step takes you further and further around the town. Wimborne is a fabulous place to shop and visit. The Minster looming up to the sky right in the town centre, the Jubilee Gardens, the old grandiose school house now housing flats for local residents, the River meandering through, the Quarterjack on the West Tower, with his brightly uniformed grenadier, who still strikes the quarters every

hour, day and night, the more modern statue of a skateboarder. What a wealth of interest to see. Even in the dark! You do not have to do this walk in the dark of course, but Nellie likes to be different and it all added to the ambience of our quest. The bright torches were useful to say the least. We solved the mystery! After all that investigating we were quite exhausted. Like Nellie we are getting on a bit now… Time for something to eat and drink. We had actually booked a carvery at the Bridge House Hotel in Longham. Delicious and great value, Nellie highly recommends it in fact. Probably because you can pile up your plate and go back for seconds. You don’t get thighs like that on lettuce leaves… Well we can safely say that Ivana from the Choir can rest in peace. Nellie isn’t giving you the answer as you could find out for yourself who did it… Where will Nellie take us next? By Debbie Corney

It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from
their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

Kiri te Kanawa By Tim Saunders
Celebrated opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has announced that she will not sing in public again. Her last public performance was in Melbourne, Australia in October 2016. “Before I’d gone on, I said, right, this it. And that was the end,” the soprano recently revealed on the BBC’s Today programme. “I don’t want to hear my voice. It is in the past. When I’m teaching young singers, and hearing beautiful young fresh voices, I don’t want to put my voice next to theirs.” Perhaps the greatest success for the New Zealand opera star was singing at the wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1981. A worldwide audience of 600m tuned in to watch this memorable occasion. In 2013 she appeared in ITV’s Downton Abbey playing the Australian operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Te Kanawa has received accolades in many countries, singing a wide array of works in multiple languages from the 17th to the 20th centuries. She is particularly associated with the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini, and has found particular success in portraying princesses, nobility, and other similar characters on stage. Born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in Gisborne, New Zealand she has Maori and European ancestry, but little is known about her birth parents. She was adopted by Thomas Te Kanawa, a Maori, and his wife, Nell. She had never made any attempt to contact her natural parents, but around this time, her half-brother Jim Rawstron contacted her. Initially, she was not willing to meet him, but later agreed. This episode ended in bitterness, and she has since reaffirmed her decision to have nothing to do with her birth family. Educated at St Mary’s College, Auckland, she formally trained in operatic singing by Dame Sister Mary Leo. Beginning her singing career as a mezzo-soprano, she later developed into a soprano. Her recording of the “Nuns’ Chorus” from the Strauss operetta Casanova was New Zealand’s first gold record.
She met Desmond Park on a blind date in London in August 1967, and they married six weeks later at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland adopting two children, Antonia and Thomas. The couple divorced in 1997. In her teens and early 20s, Te Kanawa was a pop star and popular entertainer at clubs in New Zealand and regularly appeared in newspapers and magazines. In 1963, she was runner-up to Malvina Major in the Mobil Song Quest with her performance of “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca, and in 1965 she won the same competition. As winner, she received a grant to study in London. In 1966, she then won the prestigious Australian Melbourne Sun-Aria contest, which Major had also won the previous year. Both students had been taught by Sister Mary Leo. Later that year, without an audition, she enrolled at the London Opera Centre to study under Vera Rózsa and James Robertson, who reputedly said Te Kanawa lacked a singing technique when she arrived at the school but did have a gift for captivating audiences. She first appeared on stage as the Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, as well as in performances of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in December 1968 at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. She also sang the title role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. In 1969, she sang Elena in Rossini’s La donna del lago at the Camden Festival; and was offered the role of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro after an audition of which the conductor, Colin Davis, said, “I couldn’t believe my ears. I’ve taken thousands of auditions, but it was such a fantastically beautiful voice.” Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Now, here’s a question that you might not know the answer to but will almost certainly have an opinion on. Is the Range Rover Sport one of the most influential cars of the modern era? A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little
lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.

Tastes so good... Steak and Sweet Potato Chips
February is the month of love. And a beautifully cooked steak is a wonderful way to have a romantic meal a deux, simply and easily. It’s not that hard to dish up a fabulous supper that is sure to please if you follow the simple instructions.
Ingredients 2 x 200g sirloin steaks 350g sweet potatoes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 50g bag mixed spinach, watercress and rocket Handful of cherry tomatoes 1/3 cucumber, sliced 2 spring onions Coarse ground black pepper. For the dressing 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp rapeseed oil ½ small garlic clove, crushed

Preheat oven to 200c. Half fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add in the potatoes once chopped and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan. Pour the oil over and season with a little black pepper. Toss until the potatoes are all lightly coated with the oil and seasoning. Tip the potatoes onto a baking tray and cook for 15 minutes. Turn them all then cook for a further 10 minutes or until crisp and golden. Whilst the chips are cooking, prepare your steak. Trim off any hard fat and then rub all over with the remaining oil. Season with 1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper. Using a griddle or non-stick frying pan, put over a high heat and then add the steaks. Cook for about 2 minutes each side or done until your liking. Set aside and mix the salad leaves, cucumber, chopped spring onions into a bowl. Whisk the vinegar, oil and garlic together. Lovingly lay out the chips and steak onto your plates and add the salad to one side. Drizzle with the dressing just before serving.
