Dear Poole Residents, It is that very festive time of year again. Yes already! We have the whole family coming for to stay for a few days and I am really looking forward to it. What are your plans? Veterans Enjoy Garden Tour and Cream Tea: a thank you from Compton Acres As the whole country joined together to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Compton Acres made its own gesture of thanks to local veterans. On Friday 9th November, 18 veterans from Dorset, accompanied by representatives of the Dorset Branch of SSAFA, formerly known as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, enjoyed a tour of Compton Acres award-winning gardens. The tour was then followed by a delicious cream tea served in Compton Acres’ acclaimed Café and Tearooms. Tony Erwood, Branch Secretary of the Dorset branch of SSAFA and himself a veteran, said: “This was a lovely treat for the veterans and greatly appreciated. Every Armistice Day is special for veterans, but this year has particular resonance for all veterans. The gardens are so peaceful. It was a real pleasure just to spend some time in such lovely surroundings and we all thoroughly enjoyed the cream tea.” SSAFA was set up 130 years ago and is the longest-established charity supporting veterans from all the Armed Services. It provides lifelong support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces and their families and works to ensure their independence and dignity. The Dorset Branch
provides advice and support as well as practical help covering a range of social, family and financial issues for local service personnel, veterans and their families. Compton Acres, based in Poole, is one of the UK’s finest, most historic privately-owned gardens, boasting more than a thousand species of plant from across the globe. The 10-acre site contains 5 spectacular themedgardens and are planted in such a way that there is interest throughout the seasons. Compton Acres gardens and the Café and Tearooms are open 362 days a year in all weathers. Bernard Merna, owner of Compton Acres, said: “These beautiful gardens were created in 1926 just a few years after the end of World War 1 at a time when the country was still desperately trying to recover from the trauma of conflict. Bournemouth & Poole College showcases local talent at the fifth Dorset Arts Prize One of the largest arts prizes outside London has once again attracted outstanding submissions. This year Bournemouth & Poole College teamed up with Poole Museum to present the fifth Dorset Arts Prize. Created to actively engage the community and help promote a broader, more inclusive vision for the arts locally, the competition was open to all Dorset artists, designers and makers. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘open’, to allow the artists the freedom to produce work in whichever format they felt most confident in. This year the Arts Prize welcomed Sibyl Fine King, director of the Fine Family Foundation, as the newest member of the judging panel. The foundation supports Dorset-based charitable bodies working with the environment, the arts, education, health and also in community projects. Sibyl worked alongside international artist and former student Stuart Semple, international photographer Tony Worobiec and the Borough of Poole’s Museum and Arts Manager Michael Spender, to judge the competition. Funded by the College and the Dorset Community Foundation Trust, the winners of the award categories ranged from Year 10 and Year 11’s, to the over 19’s and received rewards of up to £1,000. The winner of the Student Achievement Award also won a £2,500 bursary to put towards higher education progression or a business start-up. This year’s winner of the Achievement Award was photography graduate Charlotte Acton. Charlotte one day hopes to open her own photography studio and expressed her joy at receiving the award, which she “really didn’t expect to win”. Charlotte was rewarded for her portraiture work. She explained how she enjoyed creating photographic portraits of her brother, who is “one in a million.” She went on to say that “his features are really unique and offer some fascinating angles.” Parkstone Grammar School’s winner of the 16-18 year old category, Mia Pangilinan, was equally pleased with her award. Mia took the time to create a 3D piece of work depicting “the little things in life.”
Mia explained that she wanted “to take everyday things in life that we don’t appreciate and make them permanent.” Parkstone Grammar representatives Elizabeth Sturdy and Anne Batley were hugely impressed with Mia’s imaginative artwork, along with the submissions of their other students which contributed to Parkstone Grammar winning the overall School Art Prize. The pair explained how they encourage as many of their students as possible to enter their competition, as “they have a really good chance to gain some rewards and recognition for producing such wonderful work.” Anne and Elizabeth also mentioned that their students were “hugely excited” at the prospect of their work being on display for the public at the Poole Museum. Diane Grannell, Bournemouth & Poole College Principal, said: “It was a pleasure to work with the Poole Museum to host the fifth Dorset Arts Prize. “The Prize has always been a fantastic way to encourage collaboration between local schools, and as a way for both students and adults in the local community to showcase their tremendous creativity and talent. “With the artwork being placed on display in the museum, we are proud that this year the wider public can also enjoy the fantastic work that has been submitted.”

“My family have used Right at Home since 2014. My father had suffered a stroke and had a major heart operation and as a consequence had mobility and communication issues. At times he could be difficult to manage and required understanding and patience. “His close family lived an hour away and it was essential that a care provider was found to cope with the possibility of a call at short notice and be there for him if needed urgently. Thinking Green! Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, littered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?
Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way. For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive after years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take little or no effort and could actually save you money in the process. 1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bottles. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bottle, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again. 2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its
wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!
3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Use the Good Fish Guide to find out which fish are the most and least sustainable before you make your purchase. www.mcsuk.org/goodfishguide/ search 4. Replace your coffee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? Light Up Poole festival back to shine again in February After more than 20,000 visitors were charmed and de-light-ed by last year’s first event, the Light Up Poole festival of digital light art is returning to illuminate and transform the historic town centre. The three-night festival, sponsored by Poole BID and funded by Arts Council England, will run from 21 to 23 February and showcase the work of emerging and international artists with a series of light art, digital installations and participation events designed to cast a new light on Poole. And with traders reporting sales boosts of up to 40 per cent last year Light Up Poole is good news for the town’s businesses as well. “Light Up Poole is inviting artists to transform Poole in ways that will positively enhance the town, its businesses and local residents’ sense of civic pride that will impact way beyond three days of art,” says Libby Battaglia of festival directors Audacious. As daylight fades, Poole will provide the dramatic backdrop as artists celebrate Poole’s rich maritime heritage and unique location by responding to the theme of ‘Tides’, blending art and science to explore navigation and the stars and illuminate the enduring magic and mystery of the sea. More than 20 art spectacles will be shown at various locations to accentuate the town’s diverse landscapes, from the harbour’s natural beauty and the industrial expanse of the docks to the Old Town’s historic buildings and the urban setting of the High Street. Justin Hundley-Appleton, Poole BID manager, says: “We’re really pleased to hear that Light Up Poole will be returning in 2019. I think we can all agree that it had a positive effect on the town and I’m sure that the next year will be another interesting event that encourages further
creativity.” A learning programme will again find Light Up Poole artists working with local schools and community groups to create new work in advance of the festival. “Artists have the ability to show us things we think of as familiar in a new light,” adds Libby. “They see the world differently and they can use that creative vision to show people something new about the places they live.” A feature of this year’s festival will be the ‘Window Wonderland’ and, as well as using empty shops, Light Up Poole is keen to persuade businesses to leave the lights on, open the doors, stay open late and invite artists to transform their window space. “Light Up Poole will continue to grow Poole’s reputation as a destination for excellence in digital art and our artists will develop, hone and share technical skills and artistic practice to foster innovation and stretch artistic possibilities on an ambitious scale.” The full programme will be announced in January. Return of longest running Docu-soap, Monkey Life, to our screens on Pick Monkey Life series 11 returned to our screens on channel Pick last month, with the much anticipated catch up of all the rescues and daily dramas at the world’s biggest primate rescue centre. Based at Monkey World, Dorset, the documentary follows Dr Alison Cronin and the team, as she rescues primates in need from around the world, and rehabilitates them into groups of their own kind. At the centre, they have a safe, stable home for life.
Capturing the day-to-day life of residents
The programme is one of the longest running docu-soaps on TV, as its former incarnation, Monkey Business first appeared on screens in 1998. Nicknamed by staff “Beast-enders”, the series won a place in the public’s hearts with its fascinating, and often tragic insight into monkey and ape rescues. Series 11 follows Alison to Lebanon and Turkey to rescue two guenons, a baby loris and a chimpanzee, while back in Dorset it captures the day-today lives of the 260 primate residents of Monkey World.

Filmed over a year, the series takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, from the woolly monkey group celebrating new arrivals, to tense rescue operations, and the teams’ sad goodbyes to old friends too. Monkey Life series 11 will be shown on Freeview channel Pick at 6pm, every Sunday from 11th November 2018.

Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural
wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. All of the arena venues have long term goals to reduce the use of plastic, lower carbon footprints, reduce energy consumption and improve awareness. During the filming of the Blue Planet II television program, film crews embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries and spent over 6,000 hours of deep sea diving armed with the latest state of the art equipment. Take a deep breath and discover a whole new world hidden beneath the surface of the sea. Hosted by Anita Rani, the Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will allow the audience to share an enjoy this voyage of discovery in an epic live audio-visual experience unlike any other.

Talbot Village Trust is on board with Maritime Volunteer Service Talbot Village Trust has supported the Maritime Volunteer Service in Poole with a £20,000 grant to purchase and update its RIB and teaching equipment. The Maritime Volunteer Service is a national maritime training charity, dedicated to educating and training people aged 17 and above, to develop their boating skills. The local Poole service teaches its members new skills and qualifications, which are endorsed by the Royal Yachting Association. Members of the charity hold weekly training sessions across five classrooms which are based in the Port of Poole. Each class can take up to 20 people and the sessions cover a range of topics such as first aid and RYA Radar training. The Trust’s funding enabled the classrooms to be upgraded to enhance the service’s education and safety offering.
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “As a charitable trust we were happy to supply the Maritime Volunteer Service in Poole with the funding needed to grow their training courses for the future and improve the boats the charity uses. The service reaches a wide range of people from all walks of life, some of which have never been on the water or had any experience with boats. We have heard how the courses introduce people to a new hobby and they also make new friends.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in the autumn of this year. No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)

New Forest Ponies
When you visit The New Forest there are a group of about 5,000 locals that you can’t but help noticing. They have been hanging around for about 2,000 years and what they don’t know about the forest is not worth knowing. We are talking about the wonderful New Forest Ponies of course! All of the ponies found in the forest are wild in the sense they can roam freely but in fact they are owned by New Forest Commoners. The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest). Think of the New Forest as one large farm! If you have ever wondered why the grass is so neat and tidy here in the New Forest it is thanks to our ponies and cows! In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford
warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest. Each year, the ponies are rounded up in what are called drifts. Over thirty of these drifts take place during the summer and autumn each year giving the commoners a chance to check the health of their animals and wean and handle the foals.. You will find New Forest ponies dotted all around our National Park. With around 5,000 of them, it won’t be too long until you spot one. There is plenty of nutritious food available for the ponies and you will often find them grazing across the open moorland in small groups. You may see some of our ponies have silver collars on them. When the ponies are rounded up as part of the drift, some of them have these reflective collars put on them to help make them more visible at night time. However, not all of them are caught and some are good at losing them! If you are driving at night and see a reflective collar on a dark road then take it as an indication that there are animals about, some of which you may not be able to see so easily, so please drive with caution. Wines: Choice Desserts Dessert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are ‘late harvested’, incorporate ‘noble rot’ (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can be sparkling and fortified, also. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular, for many dining occasions. Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the Limarí Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine. Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite from the 17th
century, the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and, of course, volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.
Torres Floralis (Spain) is a further popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making FloralisMoscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations. Lighthouse receives commendations at architectural awards Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts is celebrating recognition for its extensive £5.3m refurbishment in 2015-16 with commendations in two major architectural awards. The iconic arts building was Highly Commended in the Community category at the 2018 SPACES Awards, held by the Society for Public Architecture, Construction, Engineering and Surveying. The only awards solely dedicated to rewarding excellence and innovation in construction projects delivered within the public sector, the SPACES Awards are not purely about design; they recognise the importance of team play in delivering a project that aims to achieve the ‘golden triangle’ in terms of meeting the brief, delivering on time and to the set budget. In addition, Lighthouse was a finalist in the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) Awards in London on 2 November, after being named the South West’s regional winner of the Community Benefit category. The awards are regarded as the premier property and construction awards in the country, celebrating the most innovative projects in the region and their impact on local communities. RICS recognised that the integrated design team for Lighthouse led by Design Engine Architects made a series of strategic interventions which breathe new life into many of the key facilities of the arts complex, ensuring it has a bright future at the centre of the community. Chief Executive for Lighthouse, Elspeth McBain commented: “We are thrilled that
our refurbishment project has been recognised in this way. The work has transformed our building and the benefit to our artists, audiences and staff has been immense. To have an award for our work on top of this is really wonderful.” “This was a fascinating project for us. Not only because we had the opportunity to work on the largest arts centre in the country, outside of London, but we had full reign to implement a series of architecturally strategic and technically challenging interventions which have already proved to have captured the support of a much wider audience within the community. The project has realised greater financial sustainability for the Lighthouse, which in turn has enabled a much more diverse artistic programme to be offered.” said Rod Graham of Design Engine. The refurbishment of Lighthouse was planned in two phases and part-funded by grants from the Arts Council and Borough of Poole, with the remainder raised by the venue’s own fundraising campaigns.

CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche
Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.
