4 Dear Parkstone & Lilliput residents,
Introduction
The Poole Directory - Parkstone Edition
It is that busy, exciting time of year again. Can you believe it? I am really not at all ready, but it will all happen whether I get a move on or not, so I guess I had better get cracking! I also have a one of those ‘big’ Birthdays coming up...sushhh...it is the big 50 and we are having a party to celebrate. It is a good excuse to let our hair down for the evening. Having been ‘accused’ all my life of being way older than I am, (it all started at the age of 15 when a policeman said I was endangering my daughter’s life by not having lights on our bikes. This was in fact my nearly 8 year old sister at the time...) it was really refreshing to have two people look surprised when they heard my age recently. But maybe they thought it should be my 60th Birthday?! We have to laugh don’t we.

Well now is the time to finalise the house, finish the decorating, get the new cooker, set up the spare room for guests, and yes... cook the turkey! Family and friends is what this time of year is all about, whatever your beliefs, so I do hope all goes well for you and you get some time to relax and make the most of your time off. Please continue to use The Parkstone & Lilliput Directory. The index at the back gives you all there is inside. If you know of a club or society that needs help or support in any way, then please let us know as we promote local community activities for free. CBBC’s Ed Petrie lights up Tower Park Christmas tree
From L-R) Amanda Britton, CBBC’s Ed Petrie, David Britton and Piers Brown celebrate the switching on of the Tower Park Christmas Tree
CBBC presenter Ed Petrie delighted visitors gathered at Tower Park when he switched on the leisure complex’s 20ft Christmas tree. Designed by experts in Christmas décor The Christmas Decorators, the tree is a sparkling tower of lights reflecting the magic of Christmas. Guests at the switch-on were also treated to a sing along carol session with children from the Centre Stage School of Dance and Performing Arts. Ed Petrie, who stars in this year’s Poole Lighthouse pantomime as Robin Hood, joined the children in singing a chorus of uplifting Christmas songs, including Jingle Bells and Disney’s popular ‘Let it Go’ from the smash hit film Frozen. Managing director of The Christmas Decorators, David Britton, commented: “It was a joy to see so many people enjoying the tree and to have one of our installations switched on by CBBC’s Ed Petrie, who is a fantastic
choice for Poole Lighthouse’s Robin Hood in this year’s pantomime. “It was also delightful to hear the children from the Centre Stage School singing their Christmas songs in celebration. What a great way to start the merriest season of the year!” Anne Joliffe of Tower Park said: “Nothing says Christmas quite like a tree, and with their vast experience, we knew The Christmas Decorators were the company to create our centre piece. It is beautiful and it was lovely to see the children singing away underneath it. We hope to extend the switch on activities and make even more of the event next year.” To find out more about the services available from The Christmas Decorators please visit www.thechristmasdecorators.com and select ‘Dorset office’ from the contacts page, or call 01258 839194.

. . . s r a t S e h t s t e e m i Ann Montin
This month’s star is
Nicky Campbell Ann Montini meets Radio & TV star Nicky Campbell who reveals all about his new album “We’re Just Passing Through“, which is out now. For more information see: www. robbinscampbell.com Ann – Nicky, new album, so tell me all about? Nicky – “The album is called ‘We’re Just Passing Through’ and this is because it’s what we both felt when writing the album... it’s been fun, but also personal too.” Ann - The great Kate Robbins, how did you two get together? Nicky – “I sent her my first album, she loved it, and we started talking ideas and songs and, then bingo, we were writing which is wonderful.“ Ann – How have your peers been with you since this new career? Nicky - To them it’s new, but to me it’s something I have been doing all my life really, but yes, a great many are pleased for me, and the rest, well I will let the music do the speaking.“ Ann – What is your favourite track on the album so far? Nicky – “We both love ‘Tell My Heart’. It was a fun song to record, and the lyrics well they do tell a great story, and many people have fallen in love with this track already.“ Ann – You recently appeared on “Who Do You Think You Are“ enjoy the experience? Nicky – “It was a great experience and makes you very humble really... learning about your past is a great thing, I would highly recommended it, and it kind of places you as a person.” Ann – Now your hit show “Long Lost Family“ very emotional too. Nicky – We are just very privileged to be present at this very private time for some of these families, and yes you do get caught up in the moment, but I try to hold back, as its they and not I the focus should be on.“
Ann – Your favourite kind of music is…? Nicky – “I like so many styles from big band to jazz and even punk, but for me I think that whole era of Rat Pack, style and great songs, for sure is the area you would want to return too...” Ann – If you could go back in time and duet with someone, who would that be? Nicky – “Frank, Dean, Johnny Rotten, I would love to mix it all up... we are so lucky we have such a history here to dip into, so for me it would have to be a mega mix of voices.“ Ann – You appeared in the singings show “Just The Two of Us“ with soul legend Beverley Knight ... daunting? Nicky – “She is superb and well it was a worry, knowing I would have to sing with her, but she is a great teacher, and really imparted so much love and knowledge with the show... I was very lucky to have her with me.“ Ann – So what is next for you then? Nicky – “We hope to do some live shows with the new album, and then more of the same, radio TV and music, but yes always music, it’s such a part of my life. “

CQC assessment highlights safe and caring services “At follow up inspection we found that all services we visited were caring.” “We found a clear commitment to quality improvement at all levels of the organisation and more robust quality assurance processes.” “We found some exceptional examples of care and attention provided by staff at all levels and disciplines across the organisation.” “The trust has taken steps to ensure that patients received timely care and that they and their relatives were treated with dignity and respect.” Care Quality Commission These are just some of the many positive comments made by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its report about our services, after a follow-up inspection of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in August 2014. All four compliance actions that were in place, following our initial inspection in October 2013, have now been lifted. Basil Fozard, Medical Director, said: “I would like to start by thanking colleagues for all of their hard work which has been recognised in such a positive way by inspectors. It reassures us that the improvements made over the past year are making a difference. “While it’s important that we do recognise the huge progress made in the past year, the follow-up inspection is part of a longer improvement journey to ensuring we provide consistently high quality care across all areas of our hospitals.” Leadership within the organisation has been a crucial focus for the Board of Directors in ensuring we provide quality care for all patients. Our nursing leadership is more focused with the appointment of 14 matrons. We have also appointed over 30 consultants since October 2013. We have been engaging with staff and patients to develop, and begin to embed, a new set of values. Our staff say they
feel better engaged, more supported and part of a learning culture. Together we are creating the right culture that promotes excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere. Director of Nursing, Paula Shobbrook, added: “We would also like to thank our patients and the public for continuing to tell us when we get it right - this is appreciated by our staff – and when we could do better. This has informed our improvement and will continue to do so in the future as we make the changes that we need to. Over the last 12 months we have: • launched our pressure ulcer prevention and management strategy (PACT - Pressure Area Care Together). • focused on dementia training for our staff • more robust security arrangements are in place (in A&E) • improved management and flow of patients through the hospital • new clinics for emergency care • launched a new privacy and dignity policy which includes a set of pledges to our patients which are communicated on our wards • worked with Healthwatch Dorset to hear the experiences of patients and the public • improved Friends and Family Test scores from patients who are asked if they would recommend our hospital to their friends and family • used complaints and patients stories for learning and improving services • displayed positive and negative feedback on each ward together with what we have done in response to the feedback • Ward 22 became a short stay elderly care ward and has reduced the length of stay for patients by five days. The number of timely discharges rose from 61 in December 2013 to 186 in February 2014 Log on to www.rbch.nhs.uk/cqc to read more about the report and watch interviews with members of our staff. “A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be” Did you know that chimney sweeps are considered to be lucky? This tradition dates back some 200 years to a near fatal accident involving King George III. The King was riding in his carriage when suddenly, his horses bolted out of control. The only man brave enough to attempt to stop them was a small, sooty figure: a chimney sweep. The sweep saved the King’s life and was even invited to his wedding. By Royal Decree King George proclaimed that all sweeps are good luck bearers and should be treated with respect. Thus, the tradition was established and to this day chimney sweeps are still invited to attend weddings.
Good luck is sure to rub off when the groom shakes hands with a Lucky Chimney Sweep who will have a “Lucky Kiss” for the new bride. With the power vested in him by King George III, he will recite a goodwill message and present a keepsake of good fortune to the happy couple. Why not carry on this tradition? Jim would be happy to bring luck to brides and grooms on their special day and can be contacted by phone on 07837 672548 or you can send an email to: jamesmwalford@yahoo.co.uk

Wildlife News
Talking about Wildlife...
Helping wildlife in the winter As natural habitats decrease, gardens have become of ever increasing importance to preservation of many of our native species. Gardening for wildlife in the winter is easy, and only requires a few simple steps.
The most obvious one may be feeding birds, providing you don’t have any cats in the house. In the winter, foods with high fat content are the best option. Invest in good quality bird feed, and add nutritional variety and colour to your winter garden by planting some berry producing plants as well. Even a balcony will do - place seeds and water throughout the winter and many a passing bird will be grateful. Keep the feedings regular until mid -spring, in order for the birds not to waste valuable energy by visiting your garden or balcony in vain. A permanent water supply is essential and the ideal solution is a shallow bowl of clean water on the ground - again, only if you don’t have cats! A hot water saucepan on an icy pond will prevent it from freezing over; otherwise cover the pond so that hedgehogs cannot fall in. Keep a variety of food sources in your

garden; a mixed hedgerow is an excellent source of food and protection for wildlife, and self-clinging ivy provides food and a safe home for wintering insects. Piles of dead leaves and twigs are ideal winter homes for hibernating animals, but keep an eye out should a hedgehog be lured out of hibernation by unseasonably warm weather – if you do find one, it is best to contact a professional for help. Also, make sure to keep your garden free of household rubbish, wire mesh and other potential traps for wildlife, and you’re all set for the joy of Making Wildlife Welcome in your garden this year. For more advice and support about winter wildlife gardening, you can pledge to ‘Make Wildlife Welcome’ from £3 a month by joining Dorset Wildlife Trust, and receive Kate Bradbury’s The Wildlife Gardener book for free.

We know what it’s like...
The throbbing in the front of your head, the numbness that fills your legs and rising compulsion to see how many pieces you can smash you PC into as pop up after pop up fill the last remaining space left on your screen, completely covering whatever it was you were trying to do. We know. We weren’t always nerds, we used to go outside just like you. But now we’re here to help, with whatever it is you need. You’ve had enough stress with whatever the problem was in the first place, so we’ll make fixing it as simple as possible. Just give us a call on 01202 830121 and tell us what the problem is, or even just come straight in the shop with your computer and we’ll have a look. We promise we won’t make up any rubbish or speak to you in words you can’t understand; we won’t even take any money off you until we’re sure we know what the problem is and how much it will cost to fix. And we’ll never charge if we can’t fix it. And we don’t just fix things… If you need us to come to you, just give us a call and we can book in a time that suits. If you’d like some tutoring or for one of our friendly techies to come round and talk you through some things, we can do that too. We also sell laptops and PCs, but unlike some larger stores, we don’t keep laptops in stock which means we can sell you what you need, rather than something we want to get rid of. We can also be there all the time if you’ll let us! We have two main support packages. We have our Simple Support Club where we install a little bit of software to remotely control your computer to help fix issues, for just £3.95 a month; and our Total Protection Plan which gives you award winning anti-virus and back up with our sister company SimplyBackup, for just £15 a month. If you’re interested in any of these you can read more about them on our website: simple-pcs.co.uk.

With NetGenie you can easily set up how long they can spend on Social Media and Online games whilst still allowing them access to educational sites for homework. You wouldn’t let you children go to a strip club, so why allow them to see exactly the same thing on the internet? BIOGRAPHIES Hyundai i30
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer
www.carwriteups.co.uk
@carwriteups
If looks could kill then you’ve got no worries if you drive the Hyundai i30 Tourer. Put it this way; the car’s practical, but it’s no oil painting. Harsh of me? Probably. And let’s face it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It doesn’t look like a bulldog chewing a wasp, but it has a bland, characterless presence – especially from behind. The ‘face’ of the South Korean produced model is only saved by the smart LED daytime driving lamps. Enough of my shallow thoughts about the i30’s appearance, let’s take a deeper journey into what the motor is all about. Like its slightly older hatchback sibling, the latest generation Hyundai i30 Tourer, launched two years, offers excellent levels of comfort, refinement and efficiency. What’s more, the car adds a greater load-carrying capability to the i30’s overall package. Space is amongst the best in the class, with the Tourer boasting a larger luggage capacity than the majority of its key rivals. But who’s it aimed at? Well, the i30 Tourer is able to meet the demands of both retail and fleet customers as it offers versatility along with a range of clean and fuel efficient engines. Running costs are also low, not only compared with the older pre-2012 i30 Estate, but with major competitors too. There is a choice of two engines in the range, with motorists able to choose either the 120PS petrol unit, or alternatively the 1.6 CRDi diesel in the form of a 110PS or a higherpowered 128PS variant. Both engines are coupled to a sixspeed manual or automatic transmission. The car on test here is the flagship ‘Style Nav’ 1.6 CRDi 128PS version, with a manual gearbox.
Like the hatchback, the i30 Tourer comes specified with a generous list of standard features. The catalogue of kit includes: Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition, multi -function steering wheel and air conditioning, body coloured door handles and mirrors, along with those aforementioned LED daytime running lights.
The range-topping Style Nav model adds touch screen navigation plus a rear view parking camera. It also has alloy wheels - and luxury touches such as cruise control with speed limiter, parking sensors, electric rear windows, climate control and a leather steering wheel and gear knob. Slip behind the wheel, and there are no major complaints apart from the lack of a lumbar support adjustment. That said, the seats are moulded nicely and it’s easy to achieve a good driving position. The binnacle houses clear and simple dials and the car’s fuel gauge takes forever to shift from full. It’s just a shame some cheap looking cabin plastics are in keeping with the car’s unexceptional exterior. The touch screen navigation system isn’t that intuitive and therefore frustrates, but, like all things, once you get the hang of how the gadgetry works, it’s fine. There’s more technology to spice things up on the steering wheel too. Unlike the satnav, there’s a simple button you can push that changes the steering feel from normal to sporty. I kept it in ‘sport’ mode because in an otherwise bland, albeit practical and efficient vehicle, it offers a welcome spark of dynamism to the drive.

Lighthouse panto baddie scoops UK Theatre Award Local actor Patrick O’Kane, who treads the boards in panto at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts this Christmas, has just scooped a top accolade at the prestigious UK Theatre Awards in London. Patrick was nominated for the ‘Best Performance in a Play’ category for his role in Owen McCafferty’s Belfast-set drama Quietly, about the aftermath of the troubles in Northern Ireland. He beat off stiff competition from the likes of Suranne Jones (Orlando) and Adam Best (Crime and Punishment) to walk away with the award at a star-studded ceremony at London’s historic Guildhall over the weekend. This December sees Patrick take on a very different role, when he will be entertaining hoards of families as the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham in the Lighthouse pantomime Robin Hood. No stranger to Poole audiences, Patrick returns to Lighthouse following a hugely successful run as Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk last year, where he won a legion of new fans.
Patrick’s other theatre work includes War Horse for the National Theatre and Macbeth for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and he has been seen on television in top series including Game of Thrones, The Borgias and Jamaica Inn. Robin Hood is at Lighthouse from Friday 5 December – Sunday 4 January. Tickets and information on 0844 406 8666.

26 Bournemouth Investments was established by Steve Chislett in 2001 and we cover an area within 130 miles of Bournemouth. Our clients are from all age groups, with over £75,000 of investable money (including pension funds), and also entrepreneurs looking for assistance and quality planning as they build their wealth through their business going forward. Typical clients would be those that are retired and need to obtain additional income or capital growth from their savings, rather than leaving it in the bank or building society, thereby losing the real value of their funds through inflation. We use a specialist technology system for client’s investments and pension funds and our clients benefit from monthly reporting either by email or post for suggested fund
changes. At this time, we are the only firm south of London, that uses this process. The system enhances returns over the medium term and reduces volatility. This means that we are in contact with you regularly, rather than waiting for an annual meeting to make necessary changes. Many clients in our area will be subject to inheritance tax on their estate if it is over £325,000 single or £650,000 joint (2013/14). We can assist with family trusts and other specialised tax planning to minimise the amount payable on death. We also advise on long term care costs. We would be pleased to meet you for a 30 minute consultation at our expense to see whether we can be of real long term benefit to you. So do give us a call on 01202 891852 to make an appointment.

CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche
Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb chef - www.thefoodbible.com
Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.

Money Saving Tips
Martin
LEWIS Don’t forget your holidays! Don’t forget your holidays. No I’ve not got all romantic with a yearning for sun kissed memories, I’m still on-message about saving money.
putting it in your overseas wallet (yes, I'm that nerdy). If not, there are two tricks to changing it back for the best deal:
If you took a break over the summer, some simple checks could help you save money now and for future holidays (a nice thought to get over the back-to-work blues). So here’s my holiday hangover checklist.
- Use my the buyback comparison at www.travelmoneymax.com to find best rates - Find a friend/colleague who's going where you went, and offer to exchange with them. Use the spot FX rate at www.xe.com and you both win.
Flight delayed by over 3hrs this summer (or any time since 2008)? EU reg 261/2004 means you're entitled to £100-£480 per person compensation, regardless of the cost of the trip, even for flights going back to 2008, if it: - Was an EU flight - ie, any from an EU airport or to one if an EU airline. - Arrived over 3 hours late or was cancelled. - Was the airline's fault, which covers pretty much anything barring extraordinary circumstances such as air-traffic strikes, bad weather and volcanoes.
Free templates, help and what to do about airline excuses (eg, "there's a court case") in my www.mse.me/flightdelays compensation guide. And the results can be large, as Pat contacted us, "Read your info and decided to contact Etihad about our 14.5hr delay from Heathrow to Sri Lanka in 2011. We've received a total of £2,010 between four of us... great". Shocked by bank/card currency charges on your statement? Fight back. My dad called me outraged at the 'new' foreign exchange charges on his bank statement for using his card abroad - nearly £50 in total. Yet banks and credit card providers have always levied these (and I've always nagged him to sort it, but he's my father, he'll never listen to me, I hope you will). The shock comes from the fact banks have now been forced to split charges out on statements, not hide them in the exchange rate. Most debit and credit cards add 3% loads, so £100-worth of euros costs you £100 plus a £3 charge. Instead grab a specialist load-free credit card just for spending abroad as they give near-perfect, bureaux-beating rates every time, in every country.
Stung by hefty insurance when picking your car hire up? Let me guess, you booked cheap car hire, turned up and they fear-sold you into paying 10 euros a day extra for car hire excess insurance? It happens all the time. The way round it is to get a standalone policy before you go (you can even get an annual policy to cover the whole year's hire). To find the cheapest, use www.moneymaxim.co.uk. Full help on cutting costs in www.mse.me/carhire. Run up card debts on your holiday you can't pay off in full? It's never a good idea, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If you can't clear the debt this month and you're paying hefty interest, then ensure you do a balance transfer to slash the cost, so your repayments clear the actual debt not just service the interest. Full help and best buys at www.mse.me/bts. Check your passport and EHIC sell-by dates now. Thousands were hit by passport office delays this year, causing some to miss their breaks. If your passports nearly at renewal, do it now while you've plenty of time before you next go (you’ll get the extra months added on). It's one less thing to sort, and once it's done, you're good for the next ten years. While you're at it, check the 'valid by' date on your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - if it goes before your next holiday renew it now. The big rule for renewing though is DONT GOOGLE - for both these, imposter sites unnecessarily charge you more than you should pay. Instead the official sites to use are www.gov.uk/ renew-adult-passport and www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/ Healthcareabroad/EHIC.
Check the PAO number on your suncream before throwing it away. The period after opening (PAO) number will be on the bottle - many are safe to use up to 18 months later, provided they're stored right - so don’t chuck it unnecessarily. Got Euros, dollars or even colón left over from the summer? Changing currency back is very expensive, especially for small amounts. So if it's a country you'll revisit even in a couple of years, it's likely best to hold onto it (worth

Robin Hood swaps Sherwood Forest for Poole Harbour! Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts promises adventure, laughs and magical surprises galore this pantomime season with its exciting new production of Robin Hood. The dashing hero of Nottingham Forest will be entertaining family audiences with his band of Merry Men from Friday 5 December until Sunday 4 January. CBBC’s Ed Petrie (All Over the Place, Marrying Mum and Dad) takes on the role of Robin, and will be familiar to Poole audiences from his 2011 panto appearance in Cinderella. Ed’s career started out in comedy, when he gave up his job as a researcher on the BBC panel game They Think It’s All Over to become a full-time stand-up comedian and a semi-finalist in the 2004 BBC New Comedy Awards. Ed was the main continuity presenter on CBBC for three years and was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Children’s Presenter in 2008. Ed is joined by Tom Bright as Friar Tuck, who also writes and directs the Lighthouse panto for the third year running. Tom is one of the country’s top pantomime directors and is responsible for writing and performing the song for popular 1970s children’s television series Tiswas. He has appeared on TV in a number of comedy series alongside the likes of Mike Reid and Russ Abbot. The role of the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham will be played by Patrick O’Kane (Game of Thrones, The Borgias, Jamaica Inn) who dazzled Poole pantogoers last year as Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk. Patrick is a classically trained actor whose stage credits include the title role of Macbeth for the Royal Shakespeare Company and War Horse in London’s West End. Back by popular demand are Lighthouse favourites Neil Smye and Dan Looney, whose comic timing and ability to get audiences crying with laughter has become synonymous with the Poole panto.
Local actresses Stephanie Walker and Alicia Woodhouse have worked their way up through the pantomime ranks and now take on the parts of the Woodland Fairy and Maid Marion respectively. Non-stop thrills and spills are the order of the day as Robin takes on his arch-rival the Sheriff of Nottingham and still finds time to catch the eye of the beautiful Maid Marion in this classic tale. Singalong tunes, dancing, slapstick, silliness and lots of chances to join in make Robin Hood the perfect entertainment for families this Christmas. New for this year’s production is a relaxed performance at 1.30pm on Tuesday 16 December, where the environment will be specifically adapted for families with children with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, individuals with sensory and communication disorders, those with learning disabilities and anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. Robin Hood looks set to hit the bullseye for family fun this Christmas – make sure you get your tickets and join the Merry Men for an exciting adventure in Sherwood Forest. Moors Valley helps make memories As more and more families become reliant on technology for their entertainment Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park in East Dorset are using the same resources to encourage them to put aside their tablets and mobiles and go outside to make memories. ‘Safety’ is just one of the reasons often quoted for staying inside for family fun, along with the ‘stress’ of organising an outing and the ‘high cost’ of a day out. In fact, according to a recent poll for Britax, whilst nearly two thirds of the 2,000 parents polled recognise that outdoor fun is important in terms of building family memories, around one third don’t believe that taking their children outside is fun any more. Matt Reeks, Community and Open Spaces Manager at Christchurch and East Dorset District Council said, “The last two decades have seen childhood move indoors with many children unable to explore the unknown, have real instead of virtual adventures, and connect with their environment. “Concerns over child safety are understandable but a big part of outdoor play is all about learning to take calculated risks. If we take away that element of learning, as well as the opportunity to interact with the natural world, we risk raising a generation unable to meet challenges, care for our environment – or simply enjoy the wonders of the woods.” Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, based in East Dorset, see at first hand the enjoyment experienced by the Park’s many visitors. They wanted to find a way to extend that enjoyment beyond the borders of the Park and encourage everyone to spend more time with their family outside. Their answer was to bring back the fun to outdoor play with a series of safe, stress-free activities many of which cost nothing to do and can be enjoyed in any back garden.
Every Friday a new, family-friendly activity is being posted on Twitter, Facebook and the Moors Valley website. The idea is that families can check it out in advance in time for some fun family time outside that coming weekend. Activities include simple games, activities and crafts and while some are seasonal, most can be enjoyed all year round, and the vast majority do not involved any complicated equipment of preparation. “Countryside Interpretation Ranger, Katie Davies said, “Our Family Fun Fridays are our way of helping families to get together outside, have fun and improve their wellbeing at the same time. We will be posting a new activity sheet every week for 12 months and ideas so far include snail racing, meeting a tree, making a leaf boat, den building and even creating smelly cocktails. It’s all about interacting with the environment and having fun at the same time. Whilst we are selecting one activity every week, they will build to a family-friendly resource and at the end of the year provide a choice of 52 fun ways to make memories outdoors with the family.” For more information on the Park go to www. moors-valley.co.uk. Alternatively check out the next Family Fun Friday posting on Facebook, or twitter at @moorsvalley.

Infection prevention team hold WW1 memorial workshop for Buckholme Towers School pupils Children from Buckholme Towers School learned about infection prevention in a special WW1 workshop held by the Nuffield Health Bug Busting team. Launched in partnership with AFC Bournemouth, the Nuffield Bournemouth Hospital Bug Busters schools campaign aims to educate schoolchildren about how to stop germs spreading. It is hoped the programme will help children avoid preventable illnesses and reduce absences from school owing to sickness. Pupils dressed in WW1 uniforms took part in a series of inter-active activities to learn about pioneering infection prevention practices developed during the war, some of which are still used in today’s modern medicine. Activities included a game of ‘tag’ with AFC Bournemouth star Brett Pittman to show how germs spread, and a hand washing game where pupils covered their hands in UV powder to represent germs and were challenged to wash their hands properly before examining them under UV light to see if all their ‘bacteria’ had been cleaned away.
Chris Tickner, infection prevention lead at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, said: “We were delighted to see the children learning so effectively today, not just about infection prevention, but about what life was like during the First World War. This week has been a poignant milestone in remembering the sacrifices made by soldiers in battle, and the efforts made by nurses and doctors to help the injured.” Iain Robertson, Headmaster of Buckholme Towers School and Nursery was delighted with the visit: “The pupils love getting involved with interactive learning sessions where they can transport themselves into another era. I think the Bug Busters campaign will certainly be a success here and hopefully at many more schools in the area,” he said. Meanwhile, head of the Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss commented: “The Bug Busters project has made a great start and the latest school visit is another example of that “It was fantastic to have Brett Pitman down and you could see how excited the pupils were to meet him. “The players’ support is really encouraging and with Simon Francis an ambassador for Bug Busters, it can only help deliver the message of the initiative,” he said. Schools interested in finding out more about Bug Busters are invited to contact Steve Cuss at AFC Bournemouth on 01202 726342, or to contact the Nuffield Bournemouth Hospital’s friendly customer services team on 01202 702830

Local Solar Energy Installer puts Dorset firmly on Renewable Energy map with prestigious Award The ‘Renewable Energy Advocate Award’ puts Dorset firmly on the map for quality solar installation. Nominated by leading industry solar inverter manufacturer, Enphase Energy UK, NGPS Limited of Poole in Dorset picked up the award for the South and South West at a prestigious event held at Birmingham’s NEC Arena. The event was organized by one of the UKs most influential solar energy magazines, Solar Power Portal, and the awards ceremony was a celebration of the UK solar industry during their Solar Energy UK Exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC. Enphase Energy UK pioneered a breakthrough in the field of solar inverter technology with the introduction of the micro inverter. This meant an entire solar panel system would no longer be controlled by just one inverter, as each panel is able to host its own and be controlled individually. This has enabled a large degree of flexibility for shaded or dust prone roofs as the entire system is not compromised. The technology also enables the option of a split roof installation in the case of smaller roofs, and energy production is greatly enhanced as the panels can begin generating earlier in the day than a traditional system, and later into the evening. NGPS is one of the largest installers of Enphase micro inverters in the South West and now installs the product as standard on their solar photovoltaic systems. Nick Good: “We were delighted to be one of just two companies in the South West to be nominated, and naturally pleased to be presented with an award. We work hard to provide our customers with the very best technology in the marketplace, as well as best practice in all aspects of our
business. This has been our philosophy, and I would suggest the reason for our success for more than twenty years. It is rewarding for our efforts to be both recognized and commended by a leading manufacturer in the marketplace in which we operate.” Using Enphase, both the customer and NGPS are able to see what the system is producing. Nick Good: “Any problems, albeit rare, and we would more than likely spot this before the customer. This is because Enphase enables remote monitoring, and our technical surveyors are also able to demonstrate the energy production of neighboring properties when a new customer is looking into the cost savings of a system for themselves. Enphase also adds the benefit of a 25 year warranty and enables even more homeowners to benefit from solar energy. It most certainly means better performance so our customer can reap a greater return on their investment and an even faster payback. And a happy customer makes the job even more rewarding for us as a business.”

2014 has been another amazing year for NGPS and its customers. We have helped hundreds more homeowners overcome their fear of rising ENERGY BILLS. We have won yet another prestigious Installer Award for the South West. And we want to help even more Dorset homeowners like you...

A Solar Photovoltaic Panel System has never been more affordable. While still qualifying for a 20 year government grant in the form of the Feed in Tariff (FIT). Prices have reached their lowest point as manufacturing requirements cap further reductions. To take advantage of a 50% reduction in electricity costs and government payments before they run out, the time is right to end the misery of energy price rises and reap a 10-12% return on your investment.
Enphase Micro Inverters as Standard on all NGPS Systems A breakthrough in solar technology has seen the use of Enphase Energy UK micro inverters increase in recent years. Community News
Contact the Elderly-Poole Groups Contact the Elderly Poole has 2 groups taking out 12-16 elderly guests each month. There is a vacancy for a volunteer Co-ordinator/driver and also drivers to drive one Sunday afternoon a month. More hosts to hold a tea party once or twice a year would also be welcome. Would you like to attend a tea party once a month and make a real difference to the life of a local elderly person and make them feel part of their community again?
We take out to tea, once a month on a Sunday afternoon, 12 months a year, local isolated elderly people, 75 into the 100’s. Our local family hosts welcome the group into their homes for a tea party, conversation and socialising. Often this is the only social activity that our guests attend and our guests really enjoy being part of a family for a few hours each month. This regular monthly outing makes a huge difference to the life of an isolated person and gives them something to look forward to and a chance to make new friends with a mixture of age groups. One of our guests told us, “I tell my four walls I can’t speak to them today; I have real people to talk to”. The tea parties are a free service. If you would like to attend a tea party and make some lovely new friends and really enjoy a very happy Sunday afternoon once a month, please contact:-
