Diverse Abilities judge Bike of the Night at Poole Quay Dream Machines Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, joined the Dream Machines event on Poole Quay organised by BCP Council as guest judges for “Bike of the Night”.

Jeff and Pete who are supported by the charity’s Supported Living Service are regular spectators at the event and had the opportunity to view the bikes on display along the quay front. Together they chose a bike as the evening’s Bike of the Night, and to go forward to the Bike of the Year competition at the end of September.

The winner was David Hambly from Warminster with his BMW S1000 (pictured with Jeff). Jeff and Pete agreed this was their favourite as it looked fast, and they loved the colours – red, white and blue. David is a regular visitor to the event and was pleased to be going home with Bike of the Night title.

Ground broken on dynamic housing project at Herbert Avenue in Poole Construction is now underway on a new development, which will provide 24 energy efficient apartments for people who are currently homeless or who require a stepping-stone between hostels and independent living.

On Monday 11 July Poole-based AJC Group began work on the BCP Council led project, situated on the site of the former Bourne Valley Community Centre on Herbert Avenue, Poole.

The 24 new homes will be built to Passivhaus standards, with negligible energy demand in line with the council’s responsibility to reduce fuel poverty and declared climate and ecological emergency.

Three of the flats will also be wheelchair accessible. Plans include ten parking spaces and three accessible parking spaces, a bike store and a small communal garden.

Cllr Karen Rampton, Portfolio Holder People and Homes said: “I am absolutely delighted to see construction start on this exciting new housing project. It will provide green homes for families in a great community and neighbourhood, with plenty of local and accessible amenities. I cannot wait to see the result.”

We’re aiming to build over 1,000 directly delivered homes over the next few years, and this particular development is delivering for some of our most vulnerable in society; keeping jobs in the local economy, helping our residents and doing it in a way that sets high eco standards as well.”

BCP Council’s vision is to end homelessness in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and give everyone a safe place to live that they can call home. This project will reduce the dependency on temporary Bed and Breakfast accommodation, instead providing a more suitable housing solution that can include support to stop the cycle of homelessness.

From Downton to Pamela Anderson The evolution of actress Lily James.

In terms of career transformations, Lily James has been through many.

From her early days of period drama grace and finesse on Downton Abbey, Cinderella and The Darkest Hour, to musical interventions – notably in the 2018 summer blockbuster, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again – and punchy, actionled drama, in Baby Driver and Rebecca, comedy/reality fodder in the form of Yesterday, and romance-led films such as Rare Beasts and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society.

First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021.

This landmark project for Dorset is hosted

by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water.

Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Beavers even have the potential to reduce flooding by slowing the rate of water during extreme rainfall events. Once common in the UK, the 16th century saw Eurasian beavers hunted to extinction for their meat, fur, and castoreum, a secretion from their castor glands.

Julia’s House Needs You! Do you like to keep busy? Do you have a few hours to spare?

Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice charity is seeking volunteers to help out at its friendly high street shops in Poole, Broadstone and Bransgore.

Julia’s House relies on volunteers throughout the week to run its shops, and is looking for anyone who would like to help out on the tills, sort donations and ensure customers are kept informed about the charity’s work.

Volunteering has lots of benefits from building confidence to reducing stress and is a great way to make friends and have fun, whatever your age. If you’re looking to take the next step on the career ladder it’s also an opportunity to gain extra experience or fill a gap in your skillset.

“You don’t have to have experience to be a volunteer at Julia’s House as we provide all the training you will require. You just need to be friendly, reliable and 16

Julia’s House is your local children’s hospice, looking after the most seriously ill children in Dorset and Wiltshire, who need 24 hour care for their complex and often rare medical conditions.

The charity’s dedicated team of nurses and carers are a lifeline of support, providing essential respite breaks to give exhausted families time out from roundthe-clock care, helping to prevent them from reaching breaking point.

The (New) Seven Wonders of the World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World have all but succumbed to old age or natural disaster – with the Great Pyramid at Giza the only survivor. Thankfully, there’s a new breed of mighty manmade monuments around, and all well within the grasp of any traveller willing to seek them out.

1. CHICHÉN ITZA, MEXICO The ancient city of Chichén Itza is located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

This well-known Mayan city served as a religious, political and economic centre for several hundred years. The Pyramid of Kulkulkán is probably the most recognised ruin of Chichén Itza, standing at 80ft high and incorporating a total of 365 huge stone steps.

2. CHRIST THE REDEEMER, BRAZIL This statue of Jesus is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most widely recognised monuments. It stands 98.5ft tall atop the summit of Mount Corcovado, which itself rises more than 2,300ft.

With an outstretched armspan of 92ft, and a weight of approximately 700 tonnes, the concrete and soapstone leviathan is the destination of many a pilgrimage.

3. THE COLOSSEUM, ITALY Gladiator contests, group combat, battle re-

enactments and other productions were staged at the Colosseum to an audience of almost 50,000.

Today, even after some renovations in the 1990s, the wear and tear from poor weather, natural disaster and vandalism show, but they can’t take away from this iconic Italian sight. And while you’re there, why not soak up Rome’s unique culture at the same time?

4. THE TAJ MAHAL, INDIA This 42-acre marble mausoleum complex located in Agra is a stunning Indian landmark. Construction started in 1631, spanning more than two decades, requiring more than 20,000 labourers, and costing several million rupees.

5. GREAT WALL OF CHINA, CHINA The Great Wall of China is without doubt a modern marvel and rightfully belongs amongst the other seven Wonders.

Contrary to popular belief, the wall isn’t one continuous structure - it’s actually made up of several separate structures that cover approximately 4,500 miles. Pack your walking boots!

6. PETRA, JORDAN Located in south-west Jordan are the ruins of the ancient city of Petra. Massive temples,

tombs and monuments have been cut into the surrounding sandstone cliffs and were immortalised in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Perhaps the most impressive Petra structure is the Sik alKhazneh, an elaborately carved and embellished tomb.

7. MACHU PICCHU, PERU Built in the 15th century, this ancient Incan city is nestled between two peaks – Machu Picchu (Old Peak) and Huayna Picchu (New Peak) at an amazing elevation of 7,710ft.

It is often called the lost city of the Incas because it was hidden amidst the lush forest and clouds of Peru for more than three centuries. Now rediscovered, it is a sight to be admired, and one that retains every ounce of mystical promise.

Support for Poole Museum’s Ambitious Vision for the Future Poole Museum has been awarded a £200,000 grant in the latest round of awards from the Wolfson Foundation. The funding supports ‘Shipwreck’, one of the Museum’s three new maritime galleries which will open to the public as part of a redeveloped offer in 2024.

Chief executive of the Wolfson Foundation, Paul Ramsbottom said: “The Wolfson Foundation aims to support civil society by investing in research and education - surely ever more crucial during this challenging period.”

“Our latest round of awards demonstrates the importance of capital funding for communities across the UK. The new buildings, refurbishments and equipment funded by the Foundation will support learning, enhance wellbeing and advance scientific research. While many and varied, the projects have one thing in common: they are places for people to connect, and they support imaginative and excellent work.”

“I can’t think of anything more exciting or intriguing than funding ‘Shipwreck’ - a gallery which will entice and interest visitors of all ages.”

Poole Museum, working closely with Poole Museum Foundation, is undertaking a £7.7m redevelopment project, including urgent conservation to the stonework walls of the Grade I listed medieval Wool Hall. The original proportions of the building will be restored by raising the floor and revealing the impressive stone and intricate timber structure.

As the location for the new Shipwreck Gallery the Wool Hall will be transformed into a significant new addition to Poole Museum and a reason to visit in its own right. New interpretation and interactive displays will be developed with local communities.

We are opening up opportunities for our community and visitors to get involved and discover local heritage. We are putting culture at the heart of rejuvenating Poole – a key priority for the Council.”

Poole Museum at the Heart of the Quay Quarter Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone the redevelopment project will see Poole Museum transformed into an outstanding cultural centre and thriving community hub at the heart of a new vibrant ‘Quay Quarter’.

There will be three new permanent maritime galleries, a larger temporary exhibition gallery bringing major touring exhibitions to Poole, important historic buildings will be conserved and new spaces opened-up to the public for the first time. There will be a new schools programme as well as vibrant events for the local community and visitors. New visitor facilities and better access for all are integral to the plans.

Poole Museum will close at the end of October 2022 with building work taking place during 2023 and reopening planned for 2024. During closure the museum will take to the road, bringing Poole’s unique stories and heritage to the local community through an exciting programme of outreach and events, with the chance to get “behind the scenes”.

A new temporary exhibition, Hardy’s Wessex: The landscapes that inspired a writer, is currently showing at Poole Museum until Sunday 30 October 2022.

Five Alive It can often feel like a perennial uphill struggle when it comes to getting your young ones to consume their ‘five a day’, so why not try these handy tips below, and see if they don’t help your little ones stave off hunger whilst keeping healthy at the same time.

1. Healthy junk food Try making your own healthy junk food using good quality lean meat for burgers. Kids can join in with the preparation, and if you must relent with a dollop of ketchup then do so. Also consider swapping desserts that are high in refined sugars with easy-to-make fresh fruit ice lollies made from fruit juice and pureed fruits.

2. Proper provenance Some kids can spot a hidden mushroom a mile off, so sometimes it’s best to be upfront about fruit and vegetables.

Education is key to any negotiation, so explain to your young ones where their food has come from and why each thing is so good for them. You

may well get them more interested in what they are eating.

3. Appearance Try to make sure your child’s food not only tastes good but looks good too.

Mini portions, chicken skewers or bite-sized pieces of fruit will look enticing, even artistic, whilst keeping your kids healthy and boosting creativity at the same time!

4. The fridge shelf Sometimes the fact we reach for junk food or occasional snacks can be simply down to a lack of accessible or appealing alternatives.

A low shelf in the fridge with cut-up fresh fruit and other healthy foods means hungry children have somewhere to go that’s easy to get to and packed with nutritious nibbles.

5. Get involved Lay ingredients out in bowls and let your youngsters fill and fold their own wraps, or choose their favourite toppings for tasty homemade pizzas.

Don’t lose your vote – residents in BCP area urged to check voter registration details Residents in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.

With elections taking place in BCP Council in May 2023, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.

Colour Conflict The fashion experts seem to be at odds with one another. Some believe autumn and winter fashion will retain the pastel shades that have patterned so much summer sheen; others are ready to embrace the greys and blacks of rainy days that will surely follow as the months trip by.

Which suits you best?

Look great in greys Sustainability has been a massive theme on the runways for a good few years now, yet the colours on show have often gone against a mood of caution and care.

That’s why the adoption of grey shades is an interesting shift in 2022, with designers intimating the colour represents a change of pace, where thought and intelligence in grey knocks back the buoyant, acidic tones that patterned the shop windows in previous years.

Black to basics While, in the past, black has found itself mixed with bright shades to provide contrast, for the latter months of 2022 the message is to embrace the very darkest, deepest and shiniest elements of this moody colour.

Ink blacks are the perfect exemplar of this image according to the fashion houses, with a typically neutral

Keeping in with pinks and purples Once considered the choice of the very old, the very young or the reckless, pinks and purples is very much in.

From dusky and elegant pinks at Marc Jacobs, to more violent blue and peach shades at Matty Bovan, the beautifully coloured tones have spread right the way through to hair colour.

Yellows and oranges The lighter the pastel shades you adopt, the more you need to factor in the limitations of paler complexions. That said, lighter tones perfectly complement delicate shades such as dreamy lilacs (whereas darker skins look fab with bold yellows and rich peach hues).

Nature’s nod Any kind of green or blue shade generally feels more outrageous when it comes to our clothes colours, but these can still retain a feminine edge, particularly

Beige has had its day The move to brown in recent years is as a direct reaction to beige, which many consider has been overdone in the past couple of years.

While beige offers a versatility that brown doesn’t, the fashionistas have put their weight behind a brazenly 1970s look.

And don’t forget about… white While other colours and tones may be tipped to dominate, the old favourite white will always be cleaning up in the background. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about individuality and belief.

I think sometimes people look at architecture as something that’s unattainable by us; it’s something by which we feel the need to call in help, to pursue the talents and experience of someone else in order to get us to where we want to be.

Yet the reality is very different.

Anyone can start with an idea or a concept; slowly, gradually, carefully acquiring skills so as to be able to turn some of those thoughts and ambitions into reality.

And the reward from that is two-fold – naturally you can do something that is based on your own timeframe and your own budget; but more importantly, forevermore you can look at

something that you produced and know it came from within, it came from the heart, and it addressed that incredibly special element that exists in all our lives where we invest emotion and energy into what are, otherwise, inanimate objects.

And this is a very human trait that is vital where architecture and, by extension, our homes, are concerned. It’s the fact that to anyone else, the space will ultimately mean something else versus how you interpret it; and to some people it may just mean nothing at all. There may be no tangible connection or emotion that comes from it.

Yet when we produce, envisage, imagine and create a path for something that is our own creation and our own production, we add into it an element that is bespoke, that is individual and that, you would hope, will still hold a legacy for who we are and who we were in that very moment we created it, for decades to come.

That’s why I always want to encourage individuality in people who are passionate about putting their own fingerprint on their homes.

There are really no bad decisions… providing you obey the basics of construction, that is!

So rather than just follow the guidelines and the trends and the fashions of the populous, get out there and find your own… and more than that, make that reality yourself, if you can, rather than calling in someone else.

That, to me, is the biggest thrill when I look in on the projects others have created.

To see their own work is to understand the person, and only by understanding each other can we ever truly move forward.

Poole for the Martime Perspectives That’s the suggestion from Poole Rotary for Saturday 3 September when, in conjunction with Lighthouse Poole, they offer an intriguing selection of Maritime Perspectives on Poole - past, present and future, between 11am and 5pm, with something for the whole family.

The day is based on the successful “Pirates, Castaways & Codfish” events held at Scaplen’s Court in 2019 and 2021. Entrance to the event is free (donations welcome in aid of Pramacare). Tickets for the play must be purchased in advance from Lighthouse Poole; adults £8.85, children £4.85, with under 5’s free.

Poole has a rich maritime history, soon to be re-imagined in a refurbished Poole Museum. With the second largest natural harbour in the world, it is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts. The town boasts several international headquarters, including the RNLI. The preservation of nature’s delicate balances remain a constant challenge as the pressures on the harbour and sea increase. The exciting programme for the day highlights insights on a range of perspectives about Poole’s maritime setting.

Historic perspectives feature in the Sherling Studio including the final play of a trilogy about events and personalities from Poole between 1580 and 1730. Performed by the Scaplen’s Court Players, it tells of Poole boy, Woodes Rogers who was appointed Royal Governor of the Bahamas in 1717 and had to deal with the pirates over-running the islands. These included some of the most famous pirates of the Caribbean, including Blackbeard, Calico Jack Rackham and Anne 32

Bonny.

Hear about Rogers from the pirates’ points of view and discover how he ended the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean. Interspersed with this will be sea shanties performed by locally based “Choir Engine” and “Save the Whalers” and short stories about everyday life in Poole during the 17th century.

Various modern day perspectives will be revealed in the Cinema during the day. A video of Pip Hare - Poole’s Vendee Globe 2020 round the world yachtswoman – ‘Beyond the Horizon’ will feature, as will the animated film, “Lousia: An Amazing Adventure” - portraying one of the southwest’s most daring rescues. Additionally Dr Simon Cripps, a Poole based marine biologist, working for the internationally renowned, Wildlife Conservation Society will speak on our local waters.

Angel Exit Theatre will introduce their plans for the Poole Community Play for 2023, celebrating Poole’s links with Newfoundland. Each of these will end with question and answer sessions for the audience.

In the Foyer across the day will be stalls hosted by a variety of local organisations, plus pirate boat building for the kids.

Aging clocks If someone could tell you how long you’re going to live, would you be brave enough to reveal the answer?

Aging clocks can do just this.

Most work by estimating a person’s biological age based on patterns of epigenetic markers - specifically, chemical tags called methyl groups that are layered onto DNA and affect how genes are expressed.

Others, meanwhile, act more like a speedometer, tracking the pace of aging, with clocks having been developed for specific organs of the body.

Scientists hope our ability to know how long we have left may well spark us into undertaking healthier lifestyles.

Ground Breaking at Carter’s Quay Marks Key Milestone in Poole Rejuvenation A ground-breaking ceremony at Carter’s Quay, a development of 161 new build to rent homes in Poole, took place on Friday 15 July, marking the start of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s plans to reinvigorate the local area.

Cllr Philip Broadhead, Deputy Leader BCP Council and Portfolio Holder for Development, Growth and Regeneration and Sarah Longthorpe, Director or Regeneration, BCP Council, together with dignitaries from BCP Council, Ward Councillors for Hamworthy and senior staff at Inland Homes, were in attendance to celebrate kick-starting the rejuvenation of the area.

Situated between the bridges on the waterfront at Hamworthy, the Council’s acquisition of the Carters Quay scheme forms part of BCP’s wider regeneration programme, investing in Poole to create a healthy, vibrant environment where people can live and work, and businesses can thrive.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our wonderful “Modern Magazines Campervan” loves a success story. This month he was very excited to be taking us to Marshfield Farm near Bath. The journey there is really quite stunning. Winding roads between beautiful, luscious green hills with views as far as the eye could see.

Very soothing and Daichi purred his way there. Having bought an ice-cream parlour just a few months ago, and now serving this delicious ice-cream in our newly acquired “Wafflicious” premises on Weymouth seafront, we were really looking forward to seeing the factory and the farm for the first time. Daichi is all smiles arriving at Marshfield Farm! son, had a passion for ice-cream from an early age and Dawn his lovely wife laughed about the amount of icecream parlours they visited in Italy on their honeymoon some years ago.

In 1988 after returning from agricultural college, Will wanted to diversify the family milk business and took up the challenge to create their first ice-cream – vanilla – which still today remains one of their best sellers. What an achievement.

Originally there were around 35 cows, but now, some 30 years later there are 250 cows grazing on the 1100 acres of organically farmed land. The business is thriving. Cows are miked twice a day, once at 5am and then at 4pm, seven days a week. It is a never-ending task. In between these times the happy cows merrily eat the grass in the meadows surrounding the house, factory and newly built warehouses which have been adorned with hundreds of solar panels. Parkstone Army Cadet Force News Is your child on the phone too much?

Would you rather them gain confidence, make friends and gain life skills through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, first aid training, and BTEC qualifications?

This month we celebrate several Cadet Achievements. After completing their First Aid assessment, Cadet (Cdt) Emily Schonrock and Cdt Jake Watson were presented with the St John Ambulance Youth First Aid Certificate and badge by Major Barker, The East Company Commander.

The skill they have learnt including practical knowledge on how to deal with electric shocks, head injuries, seizures, poisons and much more have put them in a valuable position to potentially save a life.

Also this month, two promotions to Cdt Lance Corporal (LCpl) were made to Cdt Thomas Rees and Cdt Emily Schonrock. Cadets have the opportunity to work towards progression up the ranks which expresses their experience and ability to lead and inspire those around them.

When I think of Leadership it is the attitude of the individual which majorly impacts the success of the team and Rees and Schonrock have demonstrated they have a positive attitude going beyond what

they are required to do. They regularly parade, attend extra sessions and have an eagerness to progress themselves and others around them. I am extremely proud of these two who continuously inspire those around them to achieve great things.

LCpl Rees replied “I am extremely proud of my recent promotion to lance corporal. I aim to continue to uphold the high standards of the detachment and support Parkstone as a whole” LCpl Schonrock added “I am thrilled to have been promoted to Lance Corporal. During my three years at Parkstone, I have had the opportunity to take part in so many activities and I look forward to helping the new cadets in the Detachment.

Congratulations LCpl Rees and LCpl Schonrock, The promotions are well deserved and will improve your application when looking for future employment.

Talbot Village Trust donates £50,000 to help keep Dorset schoolchildren safe Talbot Village Trust, a local grant giving charity that supports worthy causes in south-east Dorset, has donated £50,000 to help not-forprofit organisation 360 Skills For Life keep schoolchildren safe across Dorset through classroom-based interactive learning.

The Trust’s funding has helped the charity create Skill City, a high-quality virtual reality environment to address safeguarding issues for Year 6 to Year 9 pupils (10-14 year olds).

Rob Hattersley, Founder and Managing Director of 360 Life Skills, said: “Safeguarding children is a matter of huge concern in schools and society generally, especially during the pandemic. Schools and agencies are doing so much in terms of improving processes, but there is an opportunity to use the classroom itself to raise awareness and confidence in children for keeping themselves safe.”

Rob Hattersley added: “We are immensely grateful that Talbot Village Trust has enabled us to launch our first phase on safeguarding for 10-14 year olds. The Trust has given us a great foundation on which we can build, extending out to younger age groups and a wide range of additional skills for life topics, such as active travel and the climate emergency.”

There are up to 18 age-appropriate safeguarding dilemmas available for teachers to select for students to experience either as a class or in groups. Within different virtual environments, including streets, crossings, parks, shops, police and railway stations, schoolchildren can play out scenarios, assess risks and investigate options. The objective is for pupils to develop transferable skills for every scenario in order to make confident decisions to keep themselves and others safe in real life.

Nicholas AshleyCooper, Chairman of Talbot Village Trust, said: “As supporters of the SafeWise charity, we were saddened by its closure in January 2021 due to Covid-related issues and are delighted to pledge our support to its new digital counterpart. 360 Skills For Life is a dynamic social enterprise with the foresight to look beyond exams to prepare our young people with the skills and confidence they need to live fulfilling and safer lives.

We look forward to seeing how the pilot phase has helped children across the region when the full academic evaluation is published in early 2023.”

Phase one is now live, with a limited number of fully funded places for both primary and secondary schools across BCP and Dorset council areas. Schools interested in applying are encouraged to get in touch through the website www.360skillsforlife.org Rob Hattersley continued: “Due to the current situation in schools, we have extended membership to the end of July 2023.

This will allow schools joining us this term to explore the resource before they incorporate it into curriculum planning for the next academic year.”

The Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in Autumn 2022.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how we can repair our credit score.

Let’s be honest, the last couple of years haven’t been kind to our finances. The good news is the ability to rescue and repair that credit rating is within our own hands, and with a concerted plan we can get back to where we want to be.

And that’s important – having a good credit rating means gaining access to preferential interest rates; it could be the difference between being able to buy a house, or rent a flat, or not; and it also gives us peace of mind that if an emergency crops up we can lean on financial support.

When it comes to improving

our credit score, first check your current rating – with the likes of Experian or Equifax – and know what you’re dealing with.

When you’ve done that, see about disassociating yourself from others who may be pulling you down with their own chequered credit history - their activity may be negatively impacting yours.

Next, get yourself signed up on the electoral roll. It’s a great way for credit agencies to be able to verify who you are and adds a layer of authenticity to any application.

Spring cleaning your finances is another really sensible option.

Many of us have old credit cards or bank accounts that we don’t use. They may seem harmless on the face of it, but they all represent risk as far as your credit score is concerned.

Next, start investing in your credit future. Using a credit card may seem a peculiar way of improving your credit, but done sensibly it will. And by sensibly, I mean use it for everyday purchases on the specific understanding you’ll clear the balance at the end of each month. Doing this will boost your credit rating and prove to any lender that you can be trusted.

Finally, if you can’t afford to clear your full balance at the end of the month, at least pay off more than the minimum payment.

Mending your credit score won’t be achieved overnight, but your future self will thank you for your efforts today!

On the road again With many of the UK’s best roads wind their way through, along and on top of stunning geological features, there are some ‘must-drive’ to be explored.

1. A838, Laxford Bridge to Tongue, Scotland Let’s start right at the top, and a road that pivots through the Highlands’ incredible natural beauty. At 77 miles it is the perfect distance to savour sea vistas and mountain landscapes, yet with an average of just 96 vehicles using it each day, you really will feel you have your own slice of tarmac.

2. The M6 Toll For those who have driven through the mess that is the M6, the sheer joy of gliding along the M6 toll is a sensation like no other. Always clear of incidents, its winding, graceful curves allow fast and satisfying driving. In fact, a recent poll found the average speed of all vehicles on the road to be 76mph, a full 6mph above the speed limit.

3. B3135, Cheddar Gorge In total, a 14-mile stretch of

winding bends and stunning Somerset scenery, the B3135 envelops drivers and passengers in its Hobbit-like charm before, finally, diving off the Mendip Hills to land tourists in the wondrous landscape that is Cheddar Gorge. With towering canyon made of Carboniferous Limestone, the cliffs arc above menacingly, yet present absolute beauty.

4. A40, Wales/England Border On the face of it a dual carriageway linking two countries, but the road that skips through Pencraig, Whitchurch and Monmouth burrows deep into the Wye Valley, flanking its river, and can be likened to the

experience of a rollercoaster ride through the Canadian Rockies.

5. A592, Windermere to Penrith Better known as the Kirkstone Pass, this incredible route reaches almost 1,500ft, with spectacular valley views, drystone walls and wonderful winding roads.

6. The Snake Pass Edging through the Peak District towards Glossop, the Snake Pass is true to its name in offering a slithering track often seen on car adverts. The tranquillity of the spot is what draws drivers in, with elevation and adverse camber testing driving skills to the max.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens.

I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them!

Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die!

Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type.

You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’!

Another big error is over- and underwatering. Be regimented over your watering routine and adjust it depending on rainfall to ensure your garden is nicely hydrated at all times.

Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft.

Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slow-developing flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful…

Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.

The Kitchen Spa Why spend a fortune on fancy beauty products when you can raid the kitchen cupboards to make salon-quality treatments at home?

1. Brown sugar buzz body scrub Mix brown sugar, leftover coffee grounds, olive oil and a drizzle of honey. Rub generously onto body and shower off. *Benefits: Olive oil moisturises, sugar exfoliates, honey is healing, and ground coffee has been shown to reduce cellulite over time.

2. Papaya punch face mask Blend half a ripe papaya with fresh lemon juice and honey.

Apply to face for 15 minutes, then wash off. *Benefits: Papaya is packed with vitamins A, C and E, and also contains alpha hydroxy acids which exfoliate and brighten, while honey moisturises.

3. Brunch bunch hair mask Mash half an avocado with two egg yolks, apply to wet or dry hair and leave for 20 minutes before shampooing thoroughly. *Benefits: Egg is pure protein, which is key to rebuilding and

restoring hair, while avocado is full of vitamins and fats that will help hair shine.

4. Coconut massage bars Give coconut oil a quick blast in the microwave, then add your favourite essential oils – grapefruit and bergamot to invigorate; cinnamon, sweet orange and vanilla to relax. Pour into silicone moulds to set, then rub over body post-shower (while wet) for super-soft skin. *Benefits: Coconut oil moisturises while essential oils relax and fragrance.

5. Brilliant bath bombs Mix one cup of baking soda, half a cup of citric acid and half a cup of Epsom salts then separately mix three teaspoons of olive oil, two teaspoons of essential oil, one teaspoon of water and food colouring.

Add wet mixture slowly to dry until you have a sandy texture you can pack into moulds, then leave to dry before using in the bath. *Benefits: Epsom salts soften skin, oils

6. Peppermint chapstick Add 1oz of beeswax and three heaped teaspoons of coconut oil into a saucepan and heat on low until they are completely melted.

Next pour the mixture into a container, adding 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil and stir well. Now decant into a container and dab onto the lips whenever you feel you need a tingly revival. *Benefits: Peppermint has been scientifically proven to offer a range of health benefits, including killing germs, relieving pain, improving mental function, and reducing stress.

Welcome to the August Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the annual Perseid meteor shower, and spotting the centre of the Milky Way.

International Space Station

The ISS can be spotted in the last week of August, early in the morning. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

When smaller stars (like our Sun) have converted most of their hydrogen to helium, they puff off their outer layers in a planetary nebula, and all that remains at the centre is a core of dense material about the size of Earth, which slowly cools over millions of years.

Neutron stars are the incredibly dense, weird balls of neutrons that remain after a giant star has exploded in a supernova. They are typically the size of a city, with a mass the same as the Sun. This means that a teaspoon of neutron star would weigh as much as a mountain!

Local school’s artwork inspires colourful mural art project in Boscombe A local school student from Kings Park Academy has been presented with a canvas of her artwork which helped inspire the mural project in the underpass near the Sovereign Centre.

Angela, along with other school students entered an art competition held in partnership between BCP Council and MBN Arts.

MBN Arts were commissioned to artistically regenerate and transform the walls and ceiling of a 78 foot pedestrian underpass by Boscombe bus station.

The funding was made available through Bournemouth Towns Fund as part of the arts and culture project within the Boscombe regeneration programme.

The school design competition encouraged the school students to contribute to the design process of the mural project. Their challenge was to create artwork to connect with the local community and reflect the wildlife and environment, which would act as an inspiration for the mural artwork that can be seen on the underpass. The children’s artwork showcased some fantastic ideas and creative skills.

The artist completing the mural, Humble Cherub, integrated the winning entries ideas into the final artwork, a process which took 12 days and can be seen in the underpass. The feedback from the community both during the painting process and after competition has been incredible, and many communicated that it has really improved the area and has made the space more desirable to travel through.

produced a canvas painting of Angela’s winning entry - a picture of a Rhino - which was presented to her at her school assembly. Councillor Jane Kelly, Portfolio holder for Communities, Health and Leisure said: “I would like to thank all the children who produced such wonderful artwork, and would like to congratulate Angela on her winning entry – very well done! The mural is absolutely beautiful, and it’s all down to the creative ideas from the children who helped inspire this stunning piece of work which all the community and visitors can enjoy.”

Mike Ness, Managing Director and creative wellbeing mentor, MBN Arts said: “We have loved collaborating with both BCP Council and Kings Park Primary School, and as a special thank you to the student competition winner, we will be creating a custom painted canvas by one of our artists. Art and expression connects with us all in differently, and can benefit us in so many ways. I hope this mural will inspire the local community and visitors as I know that not enough people can access art exhibitions, however the power of street art is that it goes to people’s daily lives.”

Lauren Dean, Principal, Kings Park Academy added: “The children at King’s Park Academy have thoroughly enjoyed participating in this community project and using their imaginations to create wonderful pieces of artwork. We are very proud of Angela and excited that her ideas inspired the beautiful mural in Boscombe underpass.”

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years.

What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Ingredients (serves 8) For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream • finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

Method

2. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface.

Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked.

3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed.

Leave for 5 minutes.

5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness.

Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set.

6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

1. Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper.

Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter.
