Dear Oakdale, Welcome to your April issue of The Oakdale Directory! This is part of The Poole Directory Series. I hope you have a good Easter planned and will have the opportunity to take some time out. I had a great Mothering Sunday, very relaxing and just what I needed. With busy lives as we lead, it is important to have some time for ourselves. We are in fact going to the Isle of Wight for Easter with my parents to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This time we are staying in a large house on the cliff top. We are really looking forward to it and I know Mum and Dad can’t wait! Well here in the April issue of The Directory we have many local trades people and some shops who would love to help you. Locked out? Need extra keys? Assessing and meeting patients’ needs Assessing the needs of our patients ensures that they receive the right individual care, support and treatment that they need. This includes everything from an initial assessment when they first come in to hospital to continual assessments throughout their whole hospital stay. We have made a number of improvements in assessing and meeting the needs of our patients. Extended visiting We have extended the visiting times on our wards to benefit patients, families, friends and carers. We wanted to make visiting times less restrictive for those who may have previously been unable to see a friend or loved one. The extended times (varying on wards from 1.307.30pm or 2-8pm) mean patients, visitors and carers have more opportunities to liaise with doctors, nurses and therapists about their care. Families and carers are also able to assist patients at meal times if they wish to, with support from hospital staff. Protected mealtimes, aimed at ensuring patients can eat without being interrupted, still apply on hospital wards. Visitors are politely requested to respect this time unless they are supporting feeding. Alison Pressage, Senior Nurse for the Elderly Care Directorate, said: “Patients may not always understand what their treatment entails, but having someone they know on hand to offer help and encouragement will no doubt aid their recovery and improve their morale, and ensure relevant family members are involved appropriately in the recovery plans.” New plated meal service for patients Patients on our wards are now able to choose what they would like to eat just 90 minutes before it is served without the risk of their food of choice running out. Instead of food being served from catering trolleys on the wards, meals are now pre-plated in the hospital kitchens and stored in heated units before being delivered. Ellen Bull, Deputy Director of Nursing at the hospital Trust, said mealtimes are a vital part of a patient’s recovery: “Trials with the new plated meal service were well received, and we are hoping that patients will review this improvement positively, ensuring meals provided are hotter and more timely.” We have also expanded the number of volunteer meal time assistants who support our patients. Bay nursing improves patient communication Bay-based nursing stations have been introduced on all of our medical and care of the elderly wards at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital providing a greater nurse presence and reducing patient anxiety.
Bay nursing improves patient communication A nurse is allocated to each bay on the ward at the start of each shift. That nurse is responsible for the delivery of care to those patients (up to seven patients and supported by a health care assistant) for the duration of their shift. The nursing stations are stocked with materials based on the acuity and needs of the patients on that bay. This leads to more effective nursing by ensuring they have the right equipment to hand. The nurse becomes the expert on those patients in that bay and is able to support doctors’ ward rounds. They can provide more proactive, consistent and timely individual care and improved communication between staff, carers and families. Staff nurse, Bridget Bush from Ward 17, said: “It has improved communication between staff and patients and is more efficient. I love it. It is simple but effective and has made such a difference.” Did you know? • Emergency patients being admitted to our Acute Medical Unit are now seeing a consultant physician within an average of five hours of their arrival, compared to 12 hours a year ago. The improvement in times is down to extending the week day working hours of consultants by a further three hours so they can continue to visit patients up to 10pm. This means more patients are seen and assessed earlier allowing staff to prioritise treatment. • Preventing hospital acquired pressure ulcers is essential for the safety of our patients. we have launched a new prevention and management programme for all of our wards. Pressure Area Care Together (PACT) includes guidance for staff, monthly updates on the number of incidents as well as success stories, new initiatives and any training opportunities. We are providing additional wound care and pressure ulcer prevention training for ward staff and ward sisters are carrying out twice.

Our Photographer of the Month for April is Suzanne McGowan. “After taking retirement and having planned a holiday to the USA I thought that my compact would not do the country justice. I purchased my first DSLR a Canon 500. We had an amazing holiday with a road trip from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas, taking in the canyons of Capital Reef, Bryce and Zion. In the last couple of years I have joined a camera club updated my camera and purchased additional lens. During this time I have made so many good friends. I arrange social outings and we spend the day visiting local places of interest. I still find myself drawn to landscapes and seascapes where I try and find simplicity coupled with some graphic elements. Majority of my images are taken locally, particularly around the Dorset coastline, which I hope shows that you do not have to travel to exotic location to find a good picture.” Suzanne McGowan
Become an event volunteer for Julia’s House Do some good, have some fun – become an event volunteer for Julia’s House! The children’s hospice charity is looking for people to help out at fundraising events all over Dorset, from rattling a bucket to manning a stall, from serving teas to selling souvenir teddies. Get together with friends, husbands, children bring the whole family – volunteer for an hour or two or the occasional weekend. Wherever you live there is guaranteed to be an event near you this spring and summer. Volunteer co-ordinator June Maidment said: “Our fundraising team are out and about all over the county attending craft fairs, open gardens, festivals, dog shows, golf days, all sorts - and they are always in need of some extra pairs of helping hands. “Volunteering at events is great fun and something different to do with friends or

Daredevil pensioner takes on an EXTREME coastal charity abseil Twenty years of volunteer service for Poole Hospital isn’t enough for 83 year old Mrs Margaret Fouracre, she is now taking on the challenge of abseiling 85ft down a craggy rock face to raise money for the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital. The Poole Hospital Charity EXTREME coastal abseil, taking place on Saturday 26th April at Portland, is an 85ft drop to the base. This is nothing for abseil loving Margaret, who has taken on a charity challenge once before from the top of Poole Hospital staff accommodation, the 130ft Parkstone House. She not only completed the challenge, but did so ‘facing downwards’ to the ground. This was a few years ago now whilst Margaret was in her 70’s, proving she’s not opposed to a high rise adventure! Margaret told us that she is taking part in Poole Hospital Charity’s Extreme Coastal Abseil because she “Quite enjoys something different to spice up her life.” She has volunteered at the hospital for over 20 years volunteering once a week at the Dorset Cancer Centre, where she would like any sponsorship she raises to go to. Young at heart Margaret is not one to shy away from a challenge. Throughout her retirement years she has visited exotic places such as Uganda, Peru’s Machu Picchu and Everest’s base camp. She really is a well-travelled retiree with her next trip already planned this year to see the orangutans and turtle islands in Borneo. Poole Hospital Charity are very excited to have Margaret along for the Extreme Coastal Abseil Challenge. Fundraising assistant Gwen Trevett told us: “Margaret was quite put out when she discovered there was a 75 year old cap on participants for the event, but having discussed Margaret as an individual case with
the abseiling instructors they agreed Margaret was good to go. She doesn’t have a car but that’s not stopping her enthusiasm either she is determined to get along to our abseil in Portland to raise money for the Dorset Cancer Centre by hitching a ride with other abseiling participants.” Poole Hospital Charity has stepped up their abseil this year from the smaller cliffs of Dancing Ledge, Swanage. No previous experience, like Margaret’s, is necessary just her enthusiasm for life and a desire to fundraise for a good cause. Amazing opportunities to volunteer at four Dorset Arts Festivals Four of Dorset’s most popular summer festivals are looking for Volunteer Champions to lead a field survey force. Dorchester Festival (May 22-26), B-Town Throwdown (June 6-8), b-side (September 5-14) and Inside Out Dorset (September 12-26) are each looking to recruit dedicated and enthusiastic Volunteer Champions, who’ll assist with a concerted effort to find out who comes to their festivals and why. “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to help with some of Dorset’s most popular festival events and gain some valuable skills in the process. By finding out more about our audiences we can make future events even better” says Mark Tattersall, Artistic Director of Dorchester Festival. The 11th biennial Dorchester Festival is run by Dorchester Arts will once again bring a world of music, dance, theatre, comedy and community arts to the county town. B-Town Throwdown run by Pavilion Dance South West, is a three-day hip hop event in Bournemouth, packed full of performances, masterclasses and free outdoor events. Multi media arts festival b-side is back again with its distinctive brand of specially commissioned artworks for unusual and often overlooked sites and spaces. This year’s focus is the enchanting and sometimes mysterious Isle of Portland as artists invite the public to take another look at the familiar landscape.
With events planned across Dorset, including Poole, Bournemouth, Purbeck and along the South Dorset Ridgeway, Inside Out Dorset will bring large scale, site-specific performances to the county’s landscape. First Steps to make a bigger footprint Established local childcare provider First Steps Nursery based in Oakdale have recently celebrated 4 years in their current home on Oakdale Road. With their growing reputation for quality childcare First Steps now have a substantial waiting list for places. The good news is that First Steps have some exciting expansion plans for Summer 2014 and beyond. Work starts in early May 2014 to complete the first phase of a substantial expansion and refurbishment of the existing building and phase 1 will be completed in early September. Caroline Marks – Managing Director of First Steps Childcare Services is personally overseeing the works and is very excited at the benefits this expansion will bring to the business. She is also very mindful of the potential implications surrounding site safety during the project. She says, “My primary concern is for the safety and wellbeing of the children while this project is undertaken. For this reason and to ensure that the delivery of the initial works are completed during our quietest period we have appointed a dedicated Project Manager to oversee all aspects of the roll out. From site safety and DBS (CRB checks) of all personnel attending site to project timeline adherence and ensuring each element is completed when needed.” First Steps have deliberately broken these building works into 2 phases. Phase 1 will be completed between May and September 2014 and will focus on the existing Pre School area
with the addition of a first floor as well as refurbishment of the Pre School room. Phase 2 will commence during the Summer of 2015 and will feature refurbishment of the existing reception and the addition of a further 2 childrens rooms on the 1st fl oor along with a small 1st floor kitchen. There will also be a 1st floor balcony garden for the children to enjoy on sunnier days. Caroline Marks said, “By breaking the building works into 2 separate phases we are able to safely manage the children within the nursery while allowing the workforce uninterrupted access to the site during normal working hours where possible. We therefore intend to make the works area off limits to customers and children, and to use the rest of the building for our day to day nursery care. To eliminate unacceptable delays in the construction of the new roof and internal rooms on the fi rst fl oor, we have decided to fabricate the roof and internal components offsite and to have it installed over a shorter period in a modular format.” Over the course of the 2 phases of this project, First Steps will increase their overall occupancy to 96 children and in

addition will be able to offer a holiday club to children between the ages of 4 and 10. Caroline Marks said, “It is the aim of First Steps to offer many more government funded places for local children aged 2, 3 and 4 years in our new term time only pre-school. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well I do laugh about Nellie, the Dorset Publication’s Campervan and her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, but these machines really are something else! Nellie looked small and rather overshadowed by the imposing façade of these rather sinister, and very powerful looking vehicles. The Tank Museum at Bovington, is quite incredible! www.tankmuseum.org It was our fi rst visit. Harry came with us, a good friend of Hayden’s and much to Hayden’s excitement. Off we went. Boys in the back playing on DS’s and then opening the game’s cupboard (strategically placed next to the back seat), and taking out the “not allowed to say yes or no” game. It was fun listening to them trying to catch each other out, laughing away, whilst we were driving along. As there is a table in front of the back seat it so much easier to play a game, even whilst driving. So we arrived at the Tank Museum around 11.30am on Saturday morning. It was pretty busy which was great. In fact we had picked a weekend when the army

barracks were having a “Family Weekend” and the fairly new recruits were showing all their relatives where they lived, what they did on training etc. We were even treated to a demonstration in full combat uniform and a fast moving tank later in the day. This is separate to the Tank Museum, but right there in the arena just in front of the museum building.
In front of the Mark IV WW1 tank The museum itself is enormous! There are so many tanks and displays we didn’t get to see all of them, so it is a good excuse to go back. One of the first things we did was walk through a mock up of the First World War trenches. It was realistic, dark and with sound effects that really gave you a feel for how hard life was for the soldiers. We then sat in a first World War Tank, the Mark IV. This is the only place on Earth that you can go into a First World War tank, so it is pretty special! The volunteer guide was brilliant and told us about the heat, 65 degrees plus, with red hot pistons sizzling. Where was health and safety in those days? The maximum
29 speed was a mere 4 miles an hour. It was difficult to imagine being stuck in one of those, whilst being fired at constantly.
In the driving seat of the Mark IV WW1 tank! We were then educated about life during the Second World War. We even sat in an air raid shelter with full sound effects of bombs dropping nearby. What an experience! Harry did look a little apprehensive at this point, and I can well understand. Again the guide was excellent, showing us gas masks of the time and painting the picture of a life then. If any students are doing projects on war and how life was, this would be ideal. The museum gives a very realistic experience that you cannot get from books alone. On that note, there is a display of a camp in Afghanistan and this I personally found extremely moving. Again it is realistic and you really do get the feeling of how life might be for the soldiers. There is also a board full of people’s signatures who have been to Afghanistan as well as some names of soldiers who have lost their lives and are no longer with us. This was hard hitting. Hayden and Harry made their own game, which I was impressed with. They ran around trying to find the heaviest and fastest tank on display. Boys being boys made it a competition to see who could
beat the other one and find it the first. The tank museum is such a sturdy, huge place, it was totally fine for them to go off and play this game. Don’t tell Harry’s parents but I did ‘lose’ them for a few minutes and did wonder how long it may take to find them amongst the masses of tanks on display. Fortunately they wanted some sweets, so finding me was of benefit to them… Actually both were extremely well behaved and I had no worries whatsoever. So the day was enlightening, educational, impressive and emotional all at the same time. All of the Tank Museum volunteers have a wealth of data to give you and there is much to see and experience. I recommend you go, if you haven’t already. It reminds us that life is for living… We did of course have our customary picnic in Nellie with a cuppa as you can see here.

Family Fun on Museums at Night in Dorchester The evening of Saturday 17th May is a very special one in Dorchester as it is when all six of the town’s museums plus two other heritage attractions join together for Museums at Night. It’s a fantastic night out for all the family. Dorchester is probably unique as a town in having so many magnificent museums – The Dinosaur Museum, The Tutankhamun Exhibition, The Dorset County Museum, The Teddy Bear Museum, The Keep Military Museum, and The Terracotta Warriors Museum. These are joined on Museums at Night by the Roman Town House and Max Gate. Entry to all 8 heritage attractions in Dorchester is only £10 for a family of 2 adults and up to 4 children for the evening, when bought in advance. Museums at Night Tickets for this fantastic value family night out can be purchased at any of the participating museums, the Dorchester Tourist Information Centre and Max Gate from April onwards. Far too many people think "savings rates are so low, why bother doing anything?” Yet, while rates are indeed spitworthily low, don’t be complacent. Active, on-the-ball savers can grab up to 6% interest. So I want to give you a rate -boosting masterclass. The aim's to put every penny where it earns the max interest. Many specialist higher-rate accounts only let you pay in limited amounts for short amounts of time. So if you've big savings, you need to fill them up, then snowball on to the next best, and so on. Don’t overly worry about safety. All UK-regulated savings (which all the accounts below are) have the full £85,000 per person, per financial institution savings safety protection. Yet that’s not a reason to just put money in and forget about it. Monitor rates every few months and if they drop, ditch and switch. First, clear expensive debts. The highest guaranteed return for savings comes from clearing expensive debts, starting with the highest rates. If your debts cost more than your savings earn after tax, clear what you can and you’re onto a winner. This applies to mortgages too, unless you’ve early repayment penalties. Though with a mortgage, always have a cash emergency fund in savings before clearing it. Earn 6% AER in a regular saver, PLUS free £100 The highest rate on the market is a regular savings account, but it's only available to new or existing Firstdirect.com current account customers. Though as First Direct's won every customer service poll I've ever done and currently offers £100 to switch to it, that's still an attractive proposition. Its 6% regular saver lets you put up to £300 a month away for a year and the rate's fixed. HSBC.co.uk customers get 4% AER on a similar product, while anyone can get the LeedsBuildingSociety.co.uk regular saver at 3.05% AER. While that still holds true in the main, bizarrely, these days a few bank accounts offer super-high interest rates to draw you in. The highest is Nationwide's FlexDirect (www.nationwide.co.uk/flexdirect) at 5% AER, but you only get this rate for a year, and only on balances up to £2,500. The stand-out deal's Santander 123's (www.santander.com) 3% AER on all savings if you've £3k£20k. It has a £2/month fee, but pays up to 3% cashback on bills. Up to 1.75% AER tax-free A cash Isa's just a savings account where the taxman doesn't
remove 20% or 40% of your interest. You can put £5,760 in each tax year, and it remains tax-free year after year until you withdraw it. It's a no-brainer. Don't think you're locking the cash away - the top easy access deal is from postoffice.co.uk at 1.8% AER on £100+, with two penalty-free withdrawals allowed each tax year. This allows you to transfer old Isas into it as well to boost their rates. The rate includes a bonus for 18 months, so it'll almost certainly plummet after. Lock in for up to 2.57% AER If you’re prepared to lock cash away without access, you can earn more in a fix. Yet it's worth noting many pundits predict UK rates will rise in 2015. They change daily – latest rates are at mse.me/fixedsavings One-year fixed savings: United Bank 1.9% (www.ubluk.com). Talking about Wildlife...
Summer bird visitors Britain’s long coastline and mild summers make it an internationally important destination for the thousands of migrant birds making their journey from Africa to raise their young here in the summertime. Many of the migrants are insectivores, and the northern latitudes provide a better chance of finding food, with less competition and longer days.
You don’t need to be an expert bird watcher to enjoy the spectacle of spring migration, and Dorset offers many opportunities to observe the new arrivals. Brownsea Island, situated in Poole Harbour, with its diverse geography of woodland, saltmarsh, heathland and reed beds is a haven for wildlife all year round. In the summer, hundreds of nesting common and sandwich terns populate the sheltered lagoon. They are a family of small to medium sized birds that feed on fish and insects, making dramatic dives into the water to catch their prey. The migrant terns make their way to Brownsea Island in April and May, in order to nest and raise their young families within a short season, and return to their wintering grounds in August and September. They nest in colonies and produce one annual brood only, often extremely vulnerable to predators such as crows and gulls. Being able to breed in the safety of the nature reserve is often vital to the survival of the young terns.
Brownsea Island, which is owned by the National Trust, will open to the public daily from end of March, Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. In the meantime, or if you prefer to enjoy the nesting birds from the comfort of your own home, Dorset Wildlife Trust, along with Birds of Poole Harbour and National Trust manages a webcam on the Brownsea Island Lagoon. 4. LOVE AND HELP CHILDREN Today’s children will become tomorrow’s civilization. Bringing a child into the world today is a little bit like dropping one into a tiger’s cage. Children can’t handle their environment1 and they have no real resources. They need love and help to make it. It is a delicate problem to discuss. There are almost as many theories on how to raise a child or not raise him as there are parents. Yet if one does it wrong much grief can result and one may even complicate his or her own later years. Some try to raise children the way they were themselves raised, others attempt the exact opposite, many hold to an idea that children should just be let grow on their own. None of these guarantee success. The last method is based on a materialistic2 idea that the development of the child parallels the evolutionary3 history of the race; that in some magical way, unexplained, the “nerves” of the child will “ripen” as he or she grows older and the result will be a moral,4 well-behaving adult. Although the theory is disproven with ease – simply by noticing the large criminal population whose nerves somehow did not ripen – it is a lazy way to raise children and achieves some popularity. It doesn’t take care of your civilization’s future or your older years. A child is a little bit like a blank slate. If you write the wrong things on it, it will say the wrong things. But, unlike a slate, a child can begin to do the writing: the child tends to write what has been written already. The problem is complicated by the fact that, while most children are capable of great decency, a few are born insane and, today, some are even born as drug addicts: but such cases are an unusual few. It does no good just to try to “buy” the child with an overwhelm of toys and possessions or to smother and protect the child: the result can be pretty awful. One has to make up his mind what he is trying to get the child to become: this is modified by several things: (a) what the child basically can become due to inherent make-up and potential; (b) what the child really wants to become; (c) what one wants the child to become; (d) the resources available. But remember that whatever these all add up to, the child will not survive well unless he or she eventually becomes self-reliant and very moral. Otherwise the end product is likely to be a liability to everyone including the child.
Whatever one’s affection for the child, remember that the child cannot survive well in the long run if he or she does not have his or her feet put on the way to survival. It will be no accident if the child goes wrong: the contemporary society is tailor-made for a child’s failure. It will help enormously if you obtain a child’s understanding of and agreement to follow the precepts5 contained in this book. What does have a workability is simply to try to be the child’s friend. It is certainly true that a child needs friends. Try to find out what a child’s problem really is and, without crushing their own solutions, try to help solve them. Observe them – and this applies even to babies. Listen to what children tell you about their lives. Let them help – if you don’t, they become overwhelmed with a sense of obligation6 which they then must repress. It will help the child enormously if you obtain understanding of and agreement to this way to happiness and get him or her to follow it. It could have an enormous effect on the child’s survival – and yours. A child factually does not do well without love. Most children have an abundance of it to return.

Ninebarrow
Saturday 26th April 2014 8pm - Tickets: £7.75 Having won the Larmer Tree Festival’s Breakthrough Music Awards and topped DrunkenWerewolf magazine’s Hidden Acoustic Gems of 2013 ranking, the last 12 months have been quite a time for Poolebased acoustic folk duo Ninebarrow. Jon Whitley and Jay Labouchardiere met at school and found they shared a passion for making music that has survived their university years. Employing a range of instruments including tenor ukulele and mandola to accompany their rich harmony singing, their own songs draw on the landscape and history of the places they visit. The Ninebarrow set also includes the boys’ own take on contemporary folk songs as well as more traditional music. Ninebarrow play the Studio at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, on Saturday 26 April. Support comes from Kadia and Will McNicol. Thanks for taking time to field a few questions, how did the two of you pair up, what brought you together? JL: Well, we’ve known each other since secondary school actually. We’ve been in a few bands in the past too. Whilst we’ve both got pretty diverse musical interests, Jon’s dad is a folkie and, to be honest, spending lots of evenings at singarounds at his place and many nights at local folk clubs just inspired us to start performing again. Being based in Poole and playing throughout Dorset it’s hard not to be inspired by the landscape, is all your music original or have you explored more traditional Dorset music? JW: The landscape is definitely a real inspiration for us, particularly Dorset. We’re really proud to come from this corner of the world and it’s great to find inspiration in a place that’s very close to our hearts. Lots of our material is original and much of it is influenced by the traditional music we hear out and about. We wouldn’t say it was only Dorset’s traditional music though, we’ve got influences from all over – even some Icelandic ones!
When we’re not performing our own stuff we love finding traditional songs that we can explore and rework in our own way. Are you both from Poole, or did fate bring you here? JL: We’re both Dorset born and bred – and Poole’s been our home for most of our lives. We both went to university elsewhere, but there was never any doubt that both of us wanted to come back and live in Dorset after we’d finished. Favourite gig so far; and why? JW: Larmer Tree 2013, no question! We thought we might have 20 or 30 familiar faces rattling around in there, but playing to a packed ARC and getting such a warm reception was just incredible. Obviously you’ve got lots of gigs booked, is there an album on the way, or a record deal? JL: We’ve just finished work on our first album. It has been amazing working with some of the area’s best musicians to create some really interesting arrangements of our songs. We’d love to develop this in our live shows this year. We really want to continue doing this. There’s no record deal though, but if by some miracle it became possible for us to make a living from music we’d jump at the chance.
