It is a pleasure to bring you good news and great traders to your door. In fact, the Gazette is now delivered by Royal Mail every month so you can read all about local news that you may not see anywhere else. It is a vehicle to give small, local clubs, charities and societies a voice that they would otherwise not have. Please let them know about us. We would also love to hear from you the reader. What would you like to hear about? Is there any information that you would like to read on a monthly basis that you do not find any where else? Keeping Your Identity Safe With the practice of fraud by impersonation becoming ever more frequent, our clients are advised to take precautions to prevent being taken for a ride by thieves. Sorting out the problems caused by impersonation fraud can be an arduous and stressful procedure. Prevention is far better than cure. Two of the most common frauds are ‘skimming’, in which credit card details are stolen and used to buy goods by use of a counterfeit card or by mail order, and identity theft, in which goods are obtained on credit after the ‘theft’ of your identity. Skimming occurs at the point at which you use your credit card and is very difficult to stop. It is particularly common in some popular holiday destinations. Precautions you can take are: • Use a credit card, rather than a debit card where possible: at least then you won’t find that you cannot withdraw cash because your account has been overdrawn; • Don’t let your credit card out of your sight if you can avoid it; • Cover your hand when you put the PIN in using a cash point or pin terminal; • Do not attempt to use a cashpoint or pay by credit card unless you are sure the machine is legitimate; • Never give your PIN to anyone else; • Never give card details to any telephone enquirer; • Check your bank statements and credit card statements carefully; • Make a note of all your credit card etc. details and keep it in a safe place; and • Include the telephone numbers of the card companies, so that you can put a stop on a card as soon as something is amiss. Identity theft is, in theory, easier to stop. In this case, the fraudster will obtain details about you (your address etc.) and apply for credit in your name. It is surprisingly easy, as the information necessary to establish credit can often be stolen from the contents of your dustbin. The easiest way to minimise this risk is to make sure you never give out personal details to anyone you are unsure should have

them and also to shred all paper waste that contains your personal details. This should include offers of credit cards etc. which are sent as advertising flyers. It is also sensible to check credit card and bank statements carefully. If you are denied credit terms when there appears to be no good reason, you should beware – this is often a sign that attempts have been made to obtain credit using your address. If you think you may be the victim of identity theft you can check with a credit reference agency (such as Experian) to see if credit searches are being undertaken by finance houses. Applications for credit normally attract a credit search, so this can be a valuable early warning. If your suspicions are wellfounded, inform the Police immediately. Any email from any source (eg: your bank or HM Revenue and Customs) which requests any confidential information (such as your PIN code or bank account details to be confirmed) should be treated with the greatest suspicion. Never open attachments from unknown sources and always make sure your internet security system is up-to-date. If you use social media, it is worth checking your safety settings carefully. In some cases GPS information may be attached to a picture you post - enabling a viewer to find the location from which the picture was posted within a radius of 30 metres. Mad March Hares, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

Despite the chill in the air, it’s clear that spring is tantalisingly close. One of the most delightful signs of the season has to be the sight of mad March hares batting at one another with furious, furry fists. While this strange ritual may look like a hostile feud, it is actually a precursor to courtship. The pugilists are usually the females, who fend off amorous male admirers by boxing with them. It is also thought that female hares use this technique to test the strength of their prospective partner before deciding whether to choose him as a mate.

Hares are slightly larger than rabbits, with longer, more powerful legs, and larger ears with distinctive black tips. They are most common in grassland habitats like arable fields, grasses and hedgerows, as well as at the edges of woodlands. With many arable fields still bare, March is by far the best time of year to see these beautiful animals at their theatrical best. For the most part, hares hide in long grass to conceal themselves from predators, but when threatened, they are capable of impressive athleticism. Hares are can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour at full pelt, and when threatened, they will leap sideways and backwards over hedges to escape their pursuer. It would appear that being able to run at lightning speed is an excellent survival strategy. Hares are an ancient species, and fossil records show that their ancestors roamed the earth with the dinosaurs. It is thought that they were brought to the UK by the Romans, but have since become naturalised (which means that they are now established in the UK and are considered to be native). Like other species, hares are thought to have been affected by changes in agricultural practices. Some evidence suggests that myxomatosis, the virus introduced to the UK in the 1950s to reduce the rabbit population, may have spread to hares. While the research about this concerning development is ongoing, we at the Wildlife Trust have been working to tackle the other issues faced by the species. We work with farmers across our two counties to help make their land more wildlife friendly, including providing cover and grazing for brown hares. If you’re hoping to get a ringside seat at a mad March boxing match, get up early to increase your chances and stay down wind so your scent doesn’t give you away. The best places to look are open grassy or arable fields, particularly near to woodland fringes or decent hedgerows where hares can find shelter. The future of volunteering is bright! In uncertain times, it is important for communities to pull together. That’s why 100 delegates from Hampshire based charities and voluntary groups delved into the new decade with a conference debating the future of volunteering and upcoming challenges for the sector. Community First, a charity delivering voluntary sector support and local services across Hampshire, hosted ‘Volunteering for the Future’ at Ageas Bowl, West End on 24th January 2020. Mark Howland, Head of Communications at Charity Bank, forecasted upcoming opportunities and challenges for the voluntary sector. Demand on charities is increasing while funding decreases, but new opportunities are available through trading and social enterprise. There remains uncertainty around the impact of Brexit, particularly for staffing. However, Howland’s suggestions for these challenging times included increasing digital activity, collaboration with other charities and the public sector, and new roles for volunteers. Laura Storey, global HR communications at IBM, delivered a workshop about how storytelling can engage volunteers. Her talk emphasised the importance of messages with an emotional connection to help engage more volunteers. Delegates considered how to break down barriers to volunteering, by creating flexible opportunities and

Nicola Winter, Home-Start Butser’s Scheme Manager, and Janet Duggan, Community First’s Business Volunteering and Engagement Manager, joined the speakers for an Ask the Expert panel. The panellists discussed harnessing digital tools, including Community First’s dedicated volunteering website Volunteer Wessex. Nicola also explained that a lot of support and fundraising can be achieved with a large base of volunteers, noting that “to be sustainable we have to use our community”. Councillor Andrew Joy attended to speak about Hampshire County Council’s ongoing relationship with Community First and the voluntary sector, commending the work of local organisations. The buzz in the room showed that for anyone thinking of volunteering, there are many great organisations in Hampshire working together to make life better for everyone. Hampshire Quirky Facts by Mica Bale Renowned as the birthplace of great Victorian author Charles Dickens and the home of the glorious Tudor vessel the Mary Rose, Hampshire is a county enriched by its history as much as its beautiful surroundings. From Hampshire’s very own tortoise society to a special visit from the Beatles, here are a handful of quirky facts which celebrates Hampshire as the beloved county it is. 1) Did you know that Hampshire has its very own Tortoise Society? Joining together tortoise owners from across the county as well as the Isle of Wight and further afield, the Tortoise Society aims to help support fellow owners and to help with all elements of care for tortoises including helping to provide good homes for rescued tortoises among many other functions. 2) Were you aware that one of the very first gigs the Beatles performed before bursting onto the British Rock ‘n’ Roll scene and ensuing international success was in Aldershot at the Palais Ballroom? In the December of 1961, the band performed to a Hampshire crowd numbering just eighteen in an attempt to expose them to fame. Despite the small crowd, no doubt the Beatles enjoyed their visit to Hampshire and it is even rumoured that the four sampled some local chips! 3) Interestingly Hampshire is home to a rare example of a ‘Pest House’ which was built around 1622 and is one of only a few examples that survive today. Pest houses were designed to be used as basic quarantine facilities in which those suffering from contagious diseases could reside until their recovery or more often than not, their death. Hampshire’s Pest House is located in Odiham and is not only a fascinating and rare example but also gives an insight into the social history of Hampshire’s bygone past and is even open for the public to see.

4) New Forest Ponies are world renowned for their Hampshire connection and interestingly even William the Conqueror saw their worth after his historical victory in 1066 when he had an impressive two thousand of the local breed transported back home. As with so many native breeds however, the New Forest Pony has seen many declines in its history. In the 18th century however, an important Throughbred stallion who had already produced one of the most famous and successful racehorses in history, was introduced into the herds. 5) It would be hard to think of a traditional teatime favourite without mentioning fish fingers and interestingly Hampshire was the first to sample such treats. Although fish fingers were developed in Great Yarmouth by Birdseye, it was shoppers in Southampton who were first able to add the soon-to-be popular product to their weekly shopping and no doubt everyone was asking for seconds!

Stride out and walk for hope Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its fourth year on Sunday 7th June, and the charity would love more walkers than ever to put their best foot forward and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. Three hundred people and 30 dogs took part in the 2019 walk. Together they raised £50,000. Participants can choose from a five, 10 or 20-mile route, making the event accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Dan Bateman, who lives in West End, walked the ten-mile route in 2019 with his wife Ashleen who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. He said: “The months leading up to the walk had obviously been really tough for us, so taking part in Walk for Hope was something really positive to focus on. Everyone who took part was really friendly and because we’ve all been touched by cancer in some way, there was a real sense of community and support. It wasn’t a race because we really felt like we were on the same team.” Dan says he recognises that taking part in a charity event can be daunting, but advises anyone thinking about it to, “go for it”: “Walk for Hope was great because it was challenging, but there was a choice of distances so as many people as possible could get involved. You can view it as a gentle stroll or be more competitive with yourself. Ten miles tested us more than we

had thought and the legs were a bit sore the next day, but we felt a real sense of achievement when we crossed the finish line. We were spurred on by everyone around us and knowing we were doing it for a brilliant cause. And of course the promise of a burger at the end!” Catherine Lawry from Wessex Cancer Trust who’s organising the event, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and we would love 2020 to be the biggest and best yet.” Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, training and fundraising tips, and membership to our Team Wessex Facebook group where they can meet other supporters and share fundraising ideas and photos. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with well-earned refreshments. Tickets are £15 for a child under 16, £25 for adults and £75 for a team of four, with a sponsorship goal of £200. If the instructor knows that you are new, then they can provide some alternative options throughout the session. 7. Don’t compare yourself against others in the class. Remember that everyone started somewhere. 8. Accept that it may not be easy. Be prepared to perspire, become breathless and accept a little muscle soreness the next day. The more classes you do the less you will ache as your body starts to adapt. 9. Come along with a friend as this will help with motivation and you’ll be less likely to find an excuse to miss a class. 10. Set yourself goals. You may not see changes immediately but keep looking forward and imagine where you will be in a few months. 11. If the first class you try isn’t for you, try again and see what else is on offer. 12. Bronchiectasis is a long-term condition where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection.

The most common symptoms of bronchiectasis include: yy a persistent cough that usually brings up phlegm (sputum) yy breathlessness The severity of symptoms can vary widely. Some people have only a few symptoms that don’t appear often, while others have wideranging daily symptoms. The symptoms tend to get worse if you develop an infection in your lungs. When to see your GP You should see your GP if you develop a persistent cough. While this may not be caused by bronchiectasis, it requires further investigation. If your GP suspects you may have bronchiectasis, they’ll refer you to a specialist in treating lung conditions (a respiratory consultant) for further tests. How the lungs are affected The lungs are full of tiny branching airways known as bronchi. Oxygen travels through these airways, ends up in tiny sacs called alveoli, and from there is absorbed into the bloodstream. The inside walls of the bronchi are coated with sticky mucus, which protects against damage from particles moving down into the lungs. In bronchiectasis, one or more of the bronchi are abnormally widened. This means more mucus than usual gathers there, which makes the bronchi more vulnerable to infection. If an infection does develop, the bronchi may be damaged again, so even more mucus gathers in them and the risk of infection increases further. Over time, this cycle can cause gradually worsening damage to the lungs. Why it happens Bronchiectasis can develop if the tissue and muscles that surround the bronchi are

There are many reasons why this may happen. The 3 most common causes in the UK are:

yy underlying problems with the immune system (the body’s defence against infection) that make the bronchi more vulnerable to damage from an infection yy allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) – an allergy to a certain type of fungi that can cause the bronchi to become inflamed if spores from the fungi are inhaled But in many cases, no obvious cause for the condition can be found. This is known as idiopathic bronchiectasis. Who is affected Bronchiectasis is thought to be uncommon. It’s estimated around 5 in every 1,000 adults in the UK have the condition. It can affect anyone at any age, but symptoms don’t usually develop until middle age.

Why you need to make a will…. by Matthew Knight of The Waring Partnership LLP Back in ancient Rome (about 2,500 years ago), wills were written on clay tablets and tied up with the seals of eight witnesses. A diarist wrote that a Roman citizen would consider it a great error to be without a valid will even for one day. Today only two witnesses are needed but despite that, in modern day Britain, over two thirds of the adult population do not have a will. If you die without leaving a will, the law says that you are ‘intestate’. This results in the part of the law called the Intestacy Rules being imposed upon your estate to distribute it. There are then two common misconceptions: firstly that a surviving spouse or civil partner will inherit everything. This is not necessarily the case. If you have surviving children (or grandchildren), there is a limit on how much your surviving spouse or civil partner will receive. The second misconception is that a non-married partner will inherit. This, like the notion of a ‘common-law wife’, is a myth. There is absolutely no provision for co-habitants on the statute books. An attempt to fill this gap was abandoned in 2014. As the Intestacy Rules dictate where your estate would go, there may be adverse consequences for inheritance tax (IHT) as a result. The introduction in 2017 of the Residence Nil-Rate Band for IHT has increased the complexity of the IHT legislation so now a properly drawn will is more important than ever.

Breakdown Advice PART 1 Breaking down on the road can be a frustrating, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous and scary, experience. Every year, people are killed or seriously injured while stopped on the roadside, but many drivers don’t know how to keep safe in the event of a breakdown. Motorway breakdowns In a breakdown situation, the most important thing for drivers to consider is the safety of themselves and other road users, particularly on high speed roads like motorways. Hard shoulders are extremely dangerous places – one in 11 motorway deaths involve a vehicle on, entering or leaving the hard shoulder[ii]. If your vehicle develops a problem on the motorway: yy if your car develops a fault but you can continue driving, leave the motorway at the next available exit and stop at the service area; yy if the problem requires you to stop immediately, pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far away from the traffic as you can, with the wheels turned to the left, if possible next to an emergency phone; yy never use a warning triangle on the hard shoulder of the motorway, as walking along the hard shoulder to place a warning triangle puts you at risk of being hit; yy never sit in your vehicle on the hard shoulder, even if the weather is bad. This is dangerous as you are at risk of being struck from behind at high speed; yy put on your hazard lights and get out on the left hand side, and wait on the verge, well away from traffic; yy anybody who is unable to leave the 24

vehicle, for example someone with mobility issues, should wait inside the vehicle with their seatbelt securely fastened. yy Never be tempted to try and fix your vehicle on the hard shoulder yourself – this is dangerous. Call for help instead, using an emergency phone if one is accessible without walking along the hard shoulder. These connect directly to the police control centre, and are numbered so that you can easily be located. Blue and white marker posts show the direction to the nearest phone. Using the hard shoulder is legally permitted in only three instances: in a breakdown, an emergency, or if being pulled over by the police. Making a phone call, taking a toilet break or reading a map are not acceptable reasons to stop on the hard shoulder. MONTHLY WALK

This month’s walk is a first of it’s kind, in that it involves and entirely ‘out and back’ route, which if done fully would cover approximately 5.5 miles. The terrain is gentle, mostly through woodlands, with tree roots and loose gravel being the greatest hazards. By following the described route the regular walker should be back home in about 2 hours, provided distractions do not create too much delay. Photo 1

The suggested parking is beside The Anchor Inn, Eling Lane, Totton, SO40 9GD (photo 1), where you overlook Eling Wharf and you are only a smidgeon away from Eling Tide Mill (photo 2), which is very well worth a visit if time allows. This location also marks the Southern end of the Test Way, a 48 mile route up to the top of Hampshire. Meanwhile if a visit to the Mill is the plan, it would be best advised to check on opening times.

high tide times before starting. Also, as there are great views across the water (still the River Test), then binoculars would be a bonus. It is possible to catch up with bird life of several varieties, including gulls, little egrets, curlieu, oystercatchers, red and green shank along with the occasional heron out fishing. Once leaving the car (at last), we head directly back to the Tide Mill and walk left over the Toll Bridge (free to walkers), with the Mill holding pond over to the right and an expansive view down towards Southampton Docks on the left. Clearing this bridge we immediately turn left again and follow the defined path around the shingle edge of the foreshore. The first landmark here is the open grassy field, always popular with dog walkers and family groups; beyond that we drop down to follow the coast path on the left, with the estuary water lapping at our feet. Far away to our left we get a full view of the workings at Southampton Container Port, the 2nd largest in the Britain; with giant cranes and container forklifts shuttling along the quayside (photo 3). In about 300 metres we meet a woodland as the fence line drops back to the right. At this point we must climb the short bank and continue the journey in the dry, continuing to follow the coast side path all the time, tracing the outlets and inlets of this tidal estuary.

The return journey may seem uneventful, but with the vital right hand turn opposite the Sewage Works (see photo 4 again) and no waymark arrows, it is a challenge to maintain the correct trail. It is intriguing how everything looks different when viewed in reverse. This path weaves, wiggles and twists under the trees for around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) as the scene across the water to the left continues to alter, it will be easy to halt and count the plethora of birdlife, especially at lower tides. Then eventually the path meets a T junction, when a metal fence surrounding Marchwood Sewage Works, comes into view. We must turn left here, but make a very good note of the location (photo 4) as this will be an important turning point on the return journey. Photo 5

We now embark on the final leg, towards the outer edge of residential Marchwood, passing a jetty (photo 5) then eventually reaching a concrete walkway in front of Maritime Avenue and leading to the Esplanade (photo 6). Conveniently enough there is a bench to rest a short while before turning for home again and a chance to catch up with a fresh flock of sea birds down stream.

Once out of the woods and dropping down onto the soft, even boggy, finale, we can see Eling Wharf in the distance as it comes back into view. With the very final stretch swinging right over the Toll Bridge and right again beside the Mill and along the Wharf to the waiting car. Needless to say, a warm welcome awaits the weary traveller within the Anchor Inn, so feel free to gain refreshment before starting for home. It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside.
