A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses the importance of buildings in terms of who we are as people. I’ve always regarded buildings as living, breathing, evolving things, and while you can judge each and every one architecturally, sometimes the real fabric of a home, an office, a shop, a theatre – whatever it may be – is in the people and personalities who inhabit it. It’s always interesting with Grand Designs when we revisit buildings several years down the line to see how they have grown and merged into their environments. When a project is freshly completed there is always an element of buildings appearing clinical and, I guess, unhomely. I would even suggest that a scuffed skirting board or lightly scratched wooden floor adds personality to a space, so we should all be encouraged to enjoy our homes, to throw ourselves around in them, without fear of losing that show home chic. It’s funny, I remember one of the first projects we did, down in

Brighton. I went back after 12 or 13 years and discovered that the kids who were five or so were now these strapping 18-year-olds and heading off to university, while this ‘house’ was truly transformed into a home. In other projects we revisited, we had many people who had started projects effectively homeless, or as single parents,

a local councillor, or perhaps they are sitting on the board of a housing association, all giving back to the community. For me, that shows that in the right circumstances when you’re given the chance to build (which is an empowering process) and to experience living in great architecture, it leads to people’s lives changing for the better. It’s no coincidence and I see this all the time; and I love that because it vindicates so much of what I’d felt and believed about buildings for so long.

Autumn finches – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Look carefully in the hedgerows and along the treeline this autumn, and you might notice flocks of small birds twittering and squabbling as they fly from branch to branch. As quickly as you notice them, this flock will disappear, flying as one into the distance. Finches, in particular, flock in autumn and winter, with species including goldfinch, linnet, brambling and siskin all coming together at this time of year. One of the main reasons for this flocking behaviour is safety in numbers. These birds mainly eat seeds, which they look out for as they move around. If the birds are concentrating on finding food, they are less likely to notice a predator lurking nearby. Extra pairs of eyes mean some birds can look for food while others keep watch and raise the alarm if a circling bird of prey or prowling cat should disturb them. Many finches can be quite acrobatic in their quest to find food. You will often see siskins hanging upside-down in alder trees, manoeuvring the tiny seeds out of alder cones, and goldfinches can

perch on the slimmest spines of a teasel plant to get their next meal. As some of these species look very similar you may need to watch closely to identify all the species in a flock, especially as they are in their drab winter plumage. Look out for the white rump of bramblings amongst chaffinches or the black cap of siskins in amongst greenfinches.

One ﬁnch you would be lucky to

spot is the hawfinch. Hawfinches are very scarce but have a local stronghold, in the New Forest. These finches have a huge powerful beak, giving them an unmistakable silhouette. They use their strong beaks to crack the stones in wild cherries and sloes or crunch through beech nuts. They are most visible in autumn when you can look for them feeding on these fruits and nuts on the ground. Many of the finch species that join these flocks are coming more regularly to bird feeders. By providing food for your garden birds, you are helping them survive the coldest months of the year. This is when they expend the most energy, just keeping warm and moving around. It is an exciting time to watch the feeders as you may get some unexpected visitors arriving, should one of these mixed flocks descend on your patch!

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about getting our youngsters involved in gardening projects. I started gardening when I was nine or ten. I made a little greenhouse, tidied edges, mowed the lawn and sowed seeds, which then came up. When I had that little bit of success, it emboldened me to take cuttings and do more, and it all went on from there. To be honest I was obsessed with all things nature - frogs, toads, insects… and the garden is the nearest bit of natural history to us, so I always felt comfortable there and I still do, although I’m not sure the young generation have quite the same connection with the outdoors. In recent years I’ve worked with the Royal Horticultural Society in campaigns for school gardening, and we’ve had over 30,000 schools involved. Particularly at primary level if we can, literally, sow the seed when children are young, get them connected with the earth rather than disconnected and fearful, it will mean we are investing in the future custodians of the landscape. To me, it’s vitally important we

pass on our joy and knowledge. When I was a boy, Percy Thrower presented a programme called Gardening Club on a Friday night – this was way before Gardener’s World. He, along with a junior schoolteacher of mine, Harry Rhodes – who used to sell cacti at the church bazaar – were great inspirations. Indeed, my ﬁrst plants came from Harry. Before he died, he saw me building a career, and one of life’s great delights was knowing that Harry witnessed this little lad he had encouraged to garden getting on, and doing alright. It was an unusual thing for a small boy to be interested in, therefore when you see a young gardener showing a keen interest, you always want to fan the ﬂame. I’m now doing what Percy and Mr Rhodes did.

Of course as you get older, the way you use a garden changes. Just as when I was a boy it was a place of discovery and play, now it’s more a thing of art, beauty and quiet contemplation. What undoubtedly links my present self with that nine-yearold version of me, is stimulation, and that has never changed in all the years I’ve spent outdoors planting this, trimming that. And that’s what’s there for the younger generation. That’s why I feel we should do our utmost to engage young people in the glory of our gardens and outside spaces. With all the other distractions they have nowadays, it feels more important than ever.

I need an industrial unit for my business, what do I need to consider? Here are just a few of the key questions to ask at outset when negotiating the key terms with a landlord. 1. How long do you want to commit to? Discuss with your potential landlord how long the term of the Lease will be. Your business is likely to evolve over time, so you need to think about how long you want to commit to that particular unit. You will be contractually committed right until the end of the Lease, unless you are able to include a ‘tenant break option’ – usually after a fixed amount of time – which gives you greater flexibility to suit your business needs. 2. What type of space does the Lease cover? Make sure you agree the exact internal and external areas forming part of your Lease when negotiating terms. It is important to know early on whether your lease is going to include exclusive use of external yard/parking areas for storage, loading etc. Such areas can be demised (i.e. form part of your Lease) or allocated at the Landlord’s discretion. 3. Will my Lease have ‘security of tenure’? This means whether or not your lease is inside or outside the Landlord & Tenant Act 1954. If it is “inside the Act” then you have security – meaning that when the contractual term of the Lease ends you have an automatic right under statute to renew the lease on similar terms, with your landlord only being able to prevent this on certain limited statutory grounds. If your lease does not have security of tenure, it means you must vacate at the end of the lease, and you have no automatic right to renew. Your landlord is

free to negotiate terms for any new lease with you (or a third party) afresh. 4. What building repairs will you be liable for? Leases are usually either ‘full repairing’ (meaning the tenant assumes responsibility for the whole of the unit, including walls, foundations, roof etc) or ‘internal repairing only’ (where the Landlord retains responsibility for repairs to the external parts of the unit. Make sure you know which type you are committing to! Think about the end of the lease term as well – you are usually obliged to hand back the unit in good repair at the end of the lease term, regardless of the state of repair when you take it on – so it is essential that you fully check the condition of the unit before legally committing to a lease, or that you limit your repairing liability so that you only hand back in the same condition as when you take it on. Otherwise, you could be stung for a hefty cost at the end of the lease. 5. What will be my total monthly cost in relation to the Unit? Consider all cost elements you will have to pay each month – such as annual rent, business rates, service charges, estate charges, buildings insurance, VAT on rental payments, etc. Most landlords will require a rent deposit (usually 3-6 months’ rent) which will be payable at the outset along with the first month/quarter’s rent. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van The Jurassic era, an age of reptiles. A time of abundant dinosaurs and the advent of birds and mammals. It all started approximately 200 million years ago and ended around 145 million years ago with widespread volcanic eruptions and the release of so much CO2 that the oceans became acidic, and the global warming killed off 76 percent of marine and terrestrial life on Earth. Many plants however survived including the ferns we see today, horsetails, cypress, pines and many other species of our beloved greenery we so enjoy. Daichi is a big fan of our British Jurassic Coast. He loves to wind around those country lanes and end up at the sea looking out into the far distance. This month he took us to a real Dorset beauty spot. Ringstead Bay off the small village of Ringstead. The beach here is very different to the majestic

sandy, warm beach in Weymouth just 8 miles away. This is a covelike beach, more like you find in Devon or Cornwall. It is pebbly and has painted wooden rowing boats waiting patiently in their upsidedown position near the wall. I love sandy beaches, but this was pretty special, and the water was crystal clear and inviting. Daichi had found this glorious, secluded place by chance in fact, as we were just exploring, following roads we thought looked interesting. Daichi likes to do this. On a warmer day, it would have been ideal for a picnic and a swim. It is such a sheltered, cozy bay. Today it was enough to take in the view and relax. The Isle of Portland, looking very grand, is in clear sight. There is a café with seating outside and a parking area which is really convenient so I am sure in the height of summer it is buzzing with excitement and

activity. The day we arrived it was quiet and peaceful. Ideal for gazing out to sea and breathing in the fresh, cooler autumn air. Perfect. After a little exploration Daichi took us onto Osmington Mills just five miles from the town of Weymouth. Here there is a ‘chocolate box’ thatched pub and restaurant, The Smugglers Inn. Beautiful. The views from the cliff top here are both exhilarating and extremely calming at the same time. That first, incredible, panoramic scene over the sea, the cliffs, the bay, the rocks and huge ocean liners bobbing around (a reminder of our trials and tribulations of today), took Daichi’s breath away. Can you imagine being a massive dinosaur lugging that heavy body and long neck across this land and swinging your neck out to sea where there are huge fish swirling around in the waters below. This area sparks that imagination, that long-gone sight of yesteryears. The walks around the whole coastline look inspiring and the next time we go there we will be wearing hiking boots and will be

taking a stroll for sure. The beaches are dog friendly too, so for anyone with a four-legged, active friend, they can take the stroll with you. This whole 96-mile Jurassic coastline, which stretches from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset is just gorgeous. There is so much to explore. Thousands and thousands of years of history. Changing climates, reptiles now extinct, fish are much smaller, and humans have taken over. What a different planet it is today. Somehow for Daichi it puts the problems of now, into a different perspective. Maybe we should take some of those problems less seriously, throw caution to the wind a bit more, argue a little less and laugh much more. Daichi certainly likes to make us smile and I have to say he does a great job! Where will he take us next, I wonder…?

Support to petition calling for speed camera on Roger Penny Way At their full Council meeting (Monday 11 October 2021) NFDC considered a petition from the New Forest Speed Awareness Campaign asking the authority to add its support to calls for the introduction of an Average Speed Camera system on the B3078 (Roger Penny Way). The petition, which gained 3,557 signatures, read, ‘In light of the recent tragic deaths of three donkeys, two sheep and four ponies on the B3078 Roger Penny Way and the history of animal casualties on this route, that the District Council adds its support to calls for the introduction of an Average Speed Camera system on this route.’ Cllr Edward Heron, Leader of the Council, thanked the petition organisers, Gilly Jones and Sarah Weston for attending the meeting, and will now work with the Police and Crime Commissioner, and Hampshire County Council as the Highways Authority, on a feasibility study into traffic speeds on the road in the north of the district, which has seen a number of recent animal casualties. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Heron said; “I am sure that all Members of the Council share your concerns with regards to the unfortunate recent animal casualties along Roger Penny Way. It is clear from the petitions that have been submitted that a significant number of residents and visitors to the New Forest also share your concerns. “Although this Council does not have the responsibility or the powers to install average speed cameras or any speed deterrent or enforcement activities on the public highway, the petition before us calls on the Council to adds its support to the campaign for the introduction of an Average Speed Camera system on the B3078 Roger Penny Way. I understand from a recent communication that I have had with the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire that they are now agreeable to contributing towards a feasibility study, this is clearly a very positive move forward. “I would therefore like to move that the Council does add its support to this campaign.”

Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “I was saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of two men on the A326 last week, and whilst we await the results of the investigation into this particular incident, it certainly highlights the importance of making sure our roads are as safe as they can be for all. “In relation to Roger Penny Way, I very much share residents’ concerns about speeding in the New Forest and animal casualties. I am pleased to support a feasibility study into the potential use of average speed cameras for Roger Penny Way. There have been a number of animal deaths on the route in recent times. This loss of life is senseless and devastating for the animal owners. “The New Forest is defined not only by the beautiful landscape, but also by the animals that roam the area and we should all work together to protect it. I would urge all drivers to drive with great care in the New Forest, especially as the nights draw in and visibility reduces.” Lord Manners, the Official Verderer said; “The Verderers are delighted to hear that the Hampshire PCC is supportive of a feasibility study into the possibility of average speed cameras on the Roger Penny Way. We believe that the installation of such cameras would achieve a significant reduction in the number of animal casualties on this road.” A report on the next steps will be brought to a future NFDC Cabinet meeting.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale As the nights have drawn in and autumn is on the cusp of being retired in favour of the winter weather, what could be better than enjoying a delve into Hampshire’s quirky facts from the comfort of your own armchair? From an interesting zoological connection to Queen Victoria herself, here’s another handful of quirky facts!

Although the notion of English sparkling wines is hardly a new one, Cottonworth Vineyard has been established since 2005, with origins on the farm dating back several generations of the Liddell family. Alongside Cottonworth Vineyard is Hattingley Valley, another well-respected English wine producer. Historically France has always had the upper hand as regards to wine production however in recent years, English wines, especially those grown in Hampshire, are not only being recognised for their taste but are also making waves to the point of being not only renowned but respected.

Originally commissioned by King Charles II Lainston House became the scene of a society scandal years later when sweethearts Elizabeth Chudleigh, a court favourite and Navy commander Augustus Hervey were married at this regal palace. Neither bride nor groom could afford to allow their secret marriage to be revealed for fear of losing PHOTO: MANGOPEAR their positions. The marriage was not a success however due to the nature of its secrecy, there seemed little point in an official annulment until such time came that Elizabeth wanted to remarry, thus bringing a charge of bigamy against herself and throwing Lainston House into scandal. Today the palace is a five star hotel and hosts many weddings, thankfully none bringing such scandal as in the past!

Welcome to the November Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the return of Mercury to our morning skies, and how to ﬁnd the farthest object visible with the naked eye. International Space Station The ISS can be spotted from the 1st - 9th early in the morning. It then moves to our evening skies from the 20th and is visible between the very respectable hours of 5.30pm – 7.30pm. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Continued... Although the Andromeda Galaxy is best viewed under a dark, moonless sky, it is still visible under moderately light polluted skies. Use the ﬁgure to help ﬁnd it with the naked eye, and if not clearly visible try with binoculars or a small telescope. (Those of you with keen eyesight and very dark skies might be able to spot the Triangulum Galaxy, which is even further away). Look to the east around 6.30pm throughout November. Find Cassiopeia and the Square of Pegasus quite high in the sky, and use these and the brighter stars in the constellation of Andromeda to locate the galaxies. They will look like small smudges against the dark sky. Try to avoid searching if a bright moon phase is present.

Mercury Mercury is visible for the ﬁrst half of November, but you’ll have to be up just before dawn and have a clear view to the east as it doesn’t venture far above the horizon. Venus Venus is still visible in our evening skies low in the southwest, but is setting around 6.30pm. Our neighbour planet appears close to a slender crescent Moon on the 7th and 8th (see ﬁgure). If you have a small telescope Venus will appear ‘half-full’ this month, and is waning to a crescent. Mars The red planet is currently very faint and only just visible before dawn. On the 11th it lies just to the right of much brighter Mercury. Jupiter & Saturn As the sun sets both gas giants are visible in the south. They have disappeared below the horizon by mid to late evening. Moon This month’s full moon occurs on the 19th November and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Beaver, Frost, Freezing, and Scratching Full Moon. The total lunar eclipse on the 19th is not visible from the UK as it begins as the Moon is setting. Object of the Month November presents a great opportunity to spot the farthest object visible to the naked eye. In fact, it’s not just one object, but several – a whole galaxy in fact! The Andromeda Galaxy is located 2.5 million light years from Earth and is our closest neighbouring major galaxy. It is larger than the Milky Way, containing twice the number of stars. Both galaxies are due to merge in about 4.5 billion years.

Tear ‘n’ Share Sweet Bread Introduction

Although not a traditional festive-themed bake, sweetbreads do tend to come into the ascendancy during the winter months, and this tear ‘n’ share loaf will not only offer a soft, lightly sweetened and buttery bread treat – delicious as toast or as a bigger accompaniment to an evening meal – it’s also sociable and fun. Top it with some butter, jam or even icing, and serve.

Ingredients

(serves four)

1 cup warm milk 2 tsp active dried yeast 3 cups all-purpose ﬂour 1/3 cup granulated sugar 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp vanilla extract 3 oz unsalted butter, softened, room temperature 1/4 tsp kosher salt Egg wash (whisk together) 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp water 3 to 4 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

Method 1. Check yeast by dissolving 2tsp of active dried yeast with 1/2 cup milk and 1tsp of sugar from the overall amount and leave in a warm location until frothy, about 10-15mins. If the mixture does not froth up and rise, discard and start again. 2. Into a bowl sift three cups of
