Dorset Film Premiere Raises Over £8,000 For Local Sight Loss Charity On Monday 11th September the red carpet was rolled out at The Regent Centre in Christchurch for the Dorset Premiere of the film Victoria and Abdul. This exclusive event was in aid of Dorset Blind Association and was kindly sponsored by Blue Sky Financial Planning. It welcomed a sell out audience of over 300 people and raised a staggering £8,336.00! The film, starring Dame Judi Dench, is directed by the charitys patron and BAFTA award winner, Stephen Frears. Frears kindly supports the sight loss charity as his son and blind actor, Sam Frears, has benefited from the charitys services for many years attending their social clubs and activities. On release of his last film in 2016, Florence Foster Jenkins, he gave Dorset Blind Association the opportunity to also host their first Dorset Premiere in Bournemouth at The ABC Odeon. Victoria and Abdul follows the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her Indian servant Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal). As their friendship deepens, the queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. The film also
stars Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith and Adeel Akhtar. Helena Sinclair, Events fundraiser from Dorset Blind Association said, ‘We are incredibly overwhelmed by the support we received at our Dorset Film Premiere of Victoria and Abdul. The funds raised for Dorset Blind Association are just phenomenal and will have such a huge impact to our services in the local community. Talking about Wildlife...
Every Child Wild It’s a common topic of conversation: are we spending too much time inside with technology, rather than getting out into our natural environment? Young or old, we all spend time in front of screens, for work and pleasure, but many of us do remember playing outside when we were young. However, there are some statistics that suggest children aren’t spending as much time with nature as perhaps their parents did. In a recent survey by England’s largest outdoor learning project, Natural Connections, it was found that only 8% of school age children in England get out of their classrooms and into green spaces. 92% of schools said spending time with nature improves pupils’ health and wellbeing, and engages them with learning. In a You Gov study it was found that 78% of parents are concerned that children don’t spend though time interacting with nature and wildlife. So, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has decided to do something to address this disconnection with nature. We want to give thousands of children in Dorset a safe place to learn, laugh, watch or simply relax, surrounded by nature – all the things that many of us took for granted when we were young. It’s called the WildHub, at DWT’s Kingcombe Centre in West Dorset, surrounded with 180 hectares of the Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. The WildHub will have three main elements. An innovative outdoor classroom, complete with benches and a wooden chest full of wild activities such as books and activity sheets, a new wildlife exploration zone and play area for families, and a new pavilion
boardwalk that runs down to the river Hooke – the perfect way to explore this wonderful place. All of these elements to ‘wild play’ will provide a safe, immersive environment to give children the confidence to explore the countryside and wildlife around them. Technology is a wonderful thing, and can support a child’s understanding of the world, but we want them to experience wildlife and nature in real life, rather than just watching it on TV. Christchurch care home celebrates Summer Fayre success Care South’s Queensmead care home in Christchurch is celebrating after its Summer Fayre proved a huge hit with the local community and raised an impressive £1,150. Residents and staff at Queensmead were joined by the Mayor of Christchurch, Councillor Nick Geary, for an afternoon of traditional games, stalls and entertainment. Music was provided courtesy of local disco, ‘Just Add Music’, who had everyone at the home up and dancing. In spite of the rain, the Fayre was well attended, with giant inflatable dinosaur, ‘Denis’, who was stationed at the front of the home, attracting the attention of passers-by and drawing in the crowds.
Emma Cotton, Home Manager at Care South’s Queensmead care home, said: “We were overwhelmed by the support shown to us by friends, family members and the local community, who helped make our Summer Fayre such a resounding success. “We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Christchurch, who took time out of his busy schedule to spend time chatting with our residents, staff and visitors. Councillor Geary said he enjoyed himself so much, he hoped to return again soon for a cup of tea and natter with our residents. “A big thank you to our wonderful team at Queensmead, who work tirelessly throughout the year to raise much-needed funds for our amenity fund, which we use to support trips out and entertainment at the home, as well as making sure our residents are spoiled on their birthdays and at Christmas. The fantastic sum raised at the fayre will certainly make a big difference to the lives of the residents at our home.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie has had the time of life recently travelling all over England, quite literally. In the last two months she has taken us camping at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle with my parents, then she took us to Cornwall, Holywell Bay to be precise, for a surf life-saving competition, then to Hull for a family wedding and finally to the Centenary Caravan and Camping Club in the New Forest with Stephen’s Dad and sister! Nellie with her new pal Movelite the glistening blue depths, knowing we can “forget all about it” for just a little while. For a whole week we can leave any troubles and worries behind. Bliss. Nellie’s engine was purring. Sometime later with singing at its height, we arrived at the Caravan and Camping Club site at Treamble Valley. Unpacking all our ‘stuff’ we realised we had made the big mistake of putting the Kombi Ex awning away while it was damp… and we hadn’t dried it out. Yes, big mistake. The awning was musty and not in good condition. Then the rains started and it just did not stop. Heavy, constant rain. I woke up wet through on the left side! Deciding the best thing was to take refuge in good old Nellie, I knew I needed to check Hayden to see if he was dry. He woke up to his ‘weird’ mother patting his sleeping bag, wondering why I was checking his legs were ok!? I had to see the funny side of that. Fortunately, Hayden was totally dry. So now we had a musty, damp awning with a week to go. Hayden had a competition coming up and there was no way that Nellie was going to chance more sleepless night as the weather forecast was not looking at all good. Off to Newquay it was then. A new ‘blow up’ awning later, another full day packing and

27 27 unpacking, and we were once again all set. A rather exhausting start to a blissful week away. Do you ever wonder why we do this to ourselves? It did remind me of “Carry on Camping” only I don’t have quite the same laugh as Barbara Windsor. I am missing a couple of other characteristics too… Holywell Bay park was fun. Nellie wanted to join in the go-karts and I am sure she would have won, but sadly she was disqualified at the starting block. The foot golf was almost impossible and we did laugh. I kept telling the boys I had won until I owned up to picking up the ball at one point and throwing it through the gap, instead of kicking it. Oh well. Nellie really liked Padstow. The quay there is atmospheric with all the little stalls, street sellers braiding girl’s hair, boats and ice creams. A real sea-side treat. The sea in Cornwall is much more active than here in Dorset and Hampshire. The waves pound onto the sand with white fighting sea horses that hurl towards you. I can see why many beaches have RNLI experts at the ready, watching you. The National Surf Life Saving Competition was held on Holywell Bay. The event is so exiting with teams from all over the country. Some of these competitors surf six days a week, including the winter months. Hayden is part of the Youth Team, Branksome Chine, and they did really well but not as well as the Branksome Masters had done the previous two days! It is no mean
Much more relaxing end to the holidays...
Battling against the ocean waves feat swimming against the tide over crashing waves on a small board around the buoys and back again to run on the beach to the finish line. I take my hat off to them, or should I say my ‘dry robe’? Nellie was suitably impressed with them all. Once this was all over Nellie had to drive us all the way to Hull to my cousin’s wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies, wet suits and surf boards, next to wedding dresses, satin shoes and a fascinator. Hilarious and only us Brits could do this. As I have said Nellie is a fun loving girl who adapts to many situations and is always ready for an adventure. Life is for living to the full and Nellie smiles her way through it. The wedding was a great success and it was wonderful to catch up with everyone. We managed to keep Nellie off the booze. After all she was doing the driving! We were home for just one week when Nellie set off again and took us to the New Forest Centenary Club to meet Stephen’s Dad and sister. This was much more relaxing with wonderful sunshine and a fantastic end to our summer exploits. The gorgeous bright yellow Jessie Phyllis (named after her two grandmothers) was there. This is Nellie’s retro style VW friend who belongs to Stephen’s sister and both she and Nellie sunbathed to their hearts content dreaming about what they would do next summer. On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.

• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Annual Honey Show – Save the Bees! Beekeeping is becoming an ever-more popular past time in the UK at the moment – but you really do need the help and support of your local British Beekeeping Association.
The Bournemouth & Dorset South Beekeepers’ Association has existed since 2008 and its members form a group of friendly people who have an interest in bees. The aim of the Association is to promote beekeeping, encourage new beekeepers and raise the awareness of the importance of bees in the natural world.
